    0:00 2 bars of 4/4 then a bar of 3/4. The pickup is on the last sixteenth note of the 3/4 bar.
    0:08 3 full bars of 4/4 this time with the melody. Again, the pickup to the next phrase starts on the last sixteenth note.
    0:16 2 bars of 4/4 followed by an extra 1/4 leading into a new riff.
    0:22 6 full bars of the new riff in 3/4.
    0:33 Back to the original motif without melody. This time four bars of 4/4 followed by an extra 1/4.
    0:45 Everything from 0:08-0:44 repeats.
    1:22 Solo form: 5 bars of 4/4 follow by 1 bar of 3/4. Repeats twice.
    1:52-2:21 I can't decipher a time signature for this section but there is a clear repeating pattern. Here are the sixteenth note groupings the bassist and pianist follow: 9,7,7,9,9,7,9,7,7,9,9,6 (repeats twice). It would add up to 95/16 but it seems pretty far fetched that the Bad Plus would be thinking of it this way.

    The song is so intriguing because Redman is playing over multiple time signature changes and also because the band uses displacement throughout the piece. Redman's melodies fit like a glove over the intricate time changes and if you listen to Iverson you can follow the meter changes more easily than with the bass or drums (at least for me). Reid Anderson wrote this song. This band is awesome.

    I just saw them last Sunday at Berklee College of Music Performance Center in Boston (a great little auditorium!) A brilliant show. These guys really know how to play together. It brought to mind Joe Zawinul's description of Weather Report when they first started: "We never solo, and we always solo."

    Why is this so cool? Why does Redman want to play against these harmonies and melodies.
    I think the timing and changes excites him, as well as a new format.
    Redman, Potter, Garrett are my 3 fave saxophonists by far and I have learned so much joy from their albums.

    Ethan's polyrhythms at 5:09 blag my head when even thinking about attempting to play this (11/8 on the left hand, 7/8 on the right?). 10/10

      He's actually repeating the pattern they first played at 1:52. I'm not sure what time signature you would go with but the pattern follows this long series of sixteenth note groups: 9,7,7,9,9,7,9,7,7,9,9,6. They repeat it twice before moving on to the next section so it isn't random but I still can't figure out what to make of it.

  • @OBM21
    @OBM21 3 роки тому +2

    The first couple times I listened to this I spent a lot of my attention trying to figure out the time signatures. A few listens in I let go and just enjoyed the listen. A hundred or so listens in, I ignore the time signatures intellectually and bob my head and move naturally without noticing or thinking about it. The song has a sneaky way of turning on your body and brain that feels very natural.
    One of my favorite TBP tunes and this live version is F'n amazing.

    So I've been searching for a Bad Plus song that I can't seem to find....let me try to translate it into words....i think it's just all players just playing one note...over and over again. Drums plays snare and large tom-tom together while they play this one note in this almost non-rhythmic pattern. They play it for over a minute and then builds up into this loud and heavy zeppelinish jam. Anyone have a clue???
