Roy, we are still listening
Must have watched this 100 times. What I love about Roy and his solos are the melodies and the phrasing. Dude just making up amazing licks on the fly, giving notes space to breathe, not just climbing up and down scales and modes. Was fortunate enough to see him in London before he passed. You are sorely missed. RIP
Beautifully said and so true man.
He’s a lot like miles Davis in this sense!! Like don’t get me wrong people like Arturo Sandoval and Freddie Hubbard are great! But sometimes playing as many notes as possible in phrases gets uninteresting. But that’s just my preferred way of improv. Is the perfect balance of space and notes.
@@MattyLifts19exactly bro, I feel the same. There’s just a different groove to artists like Roy
Agree 💯!
If you are not a jazz fan, this will make you one......We lost a brilliant and talented artist in Roy Hargrove....RIP
AGREED!!
This video changed my life. Uploaded 10 years ago today. RIP Roy
So happy to hear you say that.
@ Jacob Mann--- How did it change your life?
Jacob Mann the MAN. Jon batiste sounds sick here, I hear alot of this in your playing
Jacob Mann love your big band
Awww wow RIH ROY!
Today is the first anniversary of Roy Hargrove's death.
I will continue to listen forever.
Me too.
Me three. So glad to have found this
No doubt man, in his music is reflected how nice person he was. Like some people say "You play and compose as you are". Here is the prove.
rip roy hargrove
Wow man! Listening on the 2nd anniversary of his death. May he rest in paradise. I didn’t even realize today was the day he passed until I read your comment. I instantly googled and realized he passed away, today Nov. 2, two years ago. I think it was meant for me to revisit this song. 🤙🏾🤙🏾
Black Black Still refuse to accept the fact that he is gone!!!!!
His dance moves in between make me so happy. Rest In Peace to a great!!
😁me too
I'm not the sentimental type, but when Roy passed it hit me hard...what an artist. Always wished I had the chance to thank him in person for inspiring me (and so many others) to play this music...
Rest in peace my soul brotha...❤
Terry I’m so done. Can’t believe we lost another one.
So sad. He was so talented. Thankful God blessed us with his presence Leslie.
Fantastic music. I can't play a lick but thank God for two ears to hear!! R.I P. Roy ❤
I for one took that news really hard.
Jon Batiste on piano! I never knew he played with Roy
Me neither. It wasn't until I looked in the description. I knew he looked familiar.
A little taste of Art Tatum&Oscar Peterson
Wow cool! It took me a minute to realize that it’s Batiste!
Neither did I 🙃 I was looking at one of Roy’s video N I saw him WHAT! 🤣
Watching Roy enjoy his band mates playing at 3:03 makes me smile. Miss you Roy.
Hearing Jon play Soulful on Jazz Night at age 33, which brought up so much emotion, I came back to this version of 21 year-old Jon with a mentor. Roy will always be praised for raising capable successors.
And we start talking about trumpet players and I told him that I was a good friend of Miles Davis and I was a trumpet player and that I like all his music and we talked about his first album Diamond in the Rough, from that day we became good friends, when ever he came to California he would always contact me and we would talk about music, but people don’t know that Roy was a very spiritual person ,when he got sick he called me and we talked about his illness, regardless how he felt he wanted to continue to perform,we talked about drugs, but we also talked about how he could better his life as a person,my brother may you RIP, you was a fantastic musician and friend.God Bless
He died of complications of diabetes; there are free screenings being held all the time so it's worth getting checked even if you think you're young and healthy.
Miles is unequivocally the greatest, but Roy is my absolute Favorite (no disrespect, Clifford)!
@@-A-W-B do you have anything to say to Hub, Woody, Booker Little, Don Cherry, Wadada, Lee Morgan, etc.? =)
@@hayrigoksinozkoray6427 I have great respect for Miles, and love his late 50's and early to mid 60's music but Lee Morgan is my favorite.
@@hayrigoksinozkoray6427 Right. They were all great--especially given that greatness is in part a matter of taste. Have you heard Roy Hargrove's rendition of "I Remember Clifford"--played in 2007 at the Internationale Jazzwoche Burghausen in Germany? If you fear ghosts, don't listen. It will haunt you.
Roy's playing is like slipping on a thing of butter, thinking you're about to fall and break ur hip, but then landing on clouds. I really hope that made sense to someone.
I think all good jazz is like that - great analogy!
yeah baby...I can dig it...buttery descent
much love! I feel you.
It not only made sense, but it also ranks as one of the best and most hilarious comments I've seen!
Yeah .... it make sense
This song is my happy space. If you are truly a lover of music, jazz especially, then you will agree that this is a masterful work of art. Pure talent. ❤
No matter how MANY times I listen to this I ALWAYS forget that the drummer doesn’t have a kick drum until his solo. Sounds so full and complete 😌
So right
So true
He doesn't need one. Montez is one of my favourite drummers of all time.
I think this tune is so heavily driven by that bass groove that a kick drum would just get in the way.
@@joeyollie123--- He died in 2022.
it gives me comfort that humans are capable of creating something as beautiful as this :’)
Man I was lucky enough to catch Roy play at Blues Alley in DC I think winter of 2016. One of the best shows I’ve ever been too and he played this joint. RIP to a legend, gone too soon.
Roy must be enjoying eternal music in his kingdom of peace now.
I miss Roy so much. 😢
"Yeah that's gonna... that's gonna work alright." I chime in everytime being like "YES IT WILL." absolutley amazing. RIP to a legendary purveyor of music
one of the most beautiful "modern" jazz tunes imo
I love watching Roy enjoying the solos. Makes me happy! We talk about this in our jazz group - listening - enjoying etc. sometimes it happens but often, in performance, everyone is focused on themselves. And yes - magic can happen with just a snare drum and couple of cymbals!
Lovely and so
Exactly enjoying the solos and the music
I've listened to this...maybe 50-75 times. Maybe more. But each time I listen, I love it more. I almost can do the whole thing note for note with my mouth.
how many drummers could make that much music, at that volume, on only a minimal drumset?.......great lesson for all drummers!
That is so true, Montez! Those were the days
I remember meeting this brother when he first came to NY, hosting me in his tiny apartment downtown. He was so sweet and kind; full of talent, hope and promise. I pray he is now in peace and where he wants to be. Love, love, love. There will always be new talent but none like his.
Roy was SO HAPPY, and PROUD of His Band......!!!!!!
Roy... y'all Sounded Beautiful.
Roy was the real deal. He really was. Immense and so much soul. Jeez.
Just got the word Roy is gone. So very very sad to hear this news a great loss. Rest In Peace brother.
Big loss for us Jazz lovers. He contributed so much and his musicality made my head work better. Everyone who played with him had a great experience! I saw him, live, several times and he was ALWAYS great. i think his influence will live on in those who worked for him. So sorry this happened.
@@jimjennings7623 Miles Davis made me a jazz junkie when I was 13. Now I'm 82. Listened to over 10,000 albums since then. That and abstract expressionist art have been my religion. An atheist has to have something to believe in. Something to make you feel that life is worthwhile (in addition to sex). Three axes beauty --- art, women and jazz!
His staccato trumpet playing - so very poetic.
When I first listened to this a long time ago, I was new to jazz and just wanted to hear the some crazy lines and stuff like that. So. I couldn’t grasp how beautiful this vid session is. Listening now with more understanding it’s like I’m hearing for the first time and it’s amazing. RIP Roy
piano solo is the BEST THING MY EARS HEARD
Excellent sound, love how Roy enjoyed the music as much as anyone in the room. Such a cool dude, he is missed.
What kind of mind creates this....Wow😮
Ameen Saleem is the truth on bass.
Kras 4 he is a phenom!!!
Awe yea!
RIP King Hargrove! I love your music.
Didn't even realize the drummer didn't have a kick till the camera showed his solo break. Dope
sooooooo freakin beautiful ,like wtf, it brings tears to my goddamn eyes man... fuck.
RIP brother ROY... What a priviledge to have seen you on stage in London. Missed always.
Batiste's piano solo is what's up!
Listened to this at least 30 times yesterday. Rest Easy Brother Roy.
Roy Hargrove has such a big sound and a commanding presence. But if you ever see him sit in at the jam sessions in NY, the dude's like 5'2! It's crazy!
Roy Hargrove was a genius and had something that doesn't come very frequently, he had an ear for what sounds really good and reaches the mind, soul and body.
👍what he said
Great comment
These cats are WORLD CLASS and Roy is a genius. Range, intonation, articulations. Julliard can only teach so much... dude is on a whole different level. Glad I found this clip.
"Julliard can only teach so much..." >>>> really !!!
@@franckfranck5880 The pianist studied at juilliard
True. The greatest jazz architects never set foot in or even heard of Julliard. And judging by the photos from most academic jazz programs, their great-grandchildren won't be invited to them either. Fortunately, true genius does not require a validation stamp; it just needs a chance.
@@emilerose1424 Not true. Juilliard taught these great architects ofJazz who represent the past, present and future.
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Luther Henderson, Hazel Scott, Ray Santos, Teo Macero, Tito Puente, Eddie Gomez, Henry Grimes Phil Woods, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jon Batiste, Aaron Diehl, Immanuel Wilkins, Olivia Chindamo, Alex Tarantino and others
Also, you should check out the range diversity welcomed as part Juilliard Jazz. The grandchildren of our ancestors are represented.
One of the greatest!! Gone to soon. RIP Roy. You'll be deeply missed ❤🖤💚🙏🏾
Happy Birthday Roy, hope u r well wherever you are
Now this is jazz.
Absolute genius work truly magical performance, finest version ever. Baptiste piano is so good it makes you cry. Everyone on this cut slays it!
Thanks for watching!
I miss Roy Hargrove’s music and performance so much. I remember when this video was uploaded and I still listen to it often. I was just starting to get in to Jon Batiste at the time too and was stoked to hear him play with Roy Hargrove. This recording makes me happy no matter what is going on, I usually pick up my horn and play along.
The 'duet' between the pianist and bassist is a thing of beauty. It sounded so I don't know a word to describe it but it conjures feelings of breezy chilled air in the atmosphere, Christmas decorations everywhere punctuated with a nice chestnut permeating the air, oh it's Christmas time already.
I was just listening to Roy playing another song and wanted to tell him the people of this world needs him to live a long life his music brings forth inner healing and then I noticed someone's comment saying, rip.
So much joy & life while he`s playing . Can`t believe he was taken from us so early but he left us so much. We will always miss you Roy.
I loved seeing the personality in this video. Sheer genius! RIP Roy Hargrove.
Still listening to this years later. Miss you Roy.
Roy would swing through Boston every year and I was always there digging his stuff. I will miss him greatly.
Scullers!
RIP Mr.Hargrove, you will always be a legend
Truly one the finest artists to see live. Rest in peace Roy Hargrove, you will be missed. ;(
What a beautiful composition and what a towering musical loss. Thank you Roy for the GREAT music and for sharing your gifts with so many of us. RIP.
The Supreme Roy Hargrove!!! May your spirit forever reign throughout the portals of Time. 🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺R.I.P
When u r truly happy with ur life’s work.🎺💪🏾✊🏾
Roy Hargrove was one of the best trumpet players to come along in the last thirty years. You can hear a bit of blue Mitchell and lee morgan in his playing, but his style and sound are all his own. I was fortunate to see him perform with johnny Griffin at the blue note. Yet another outstanding musician taken way before his time.
...utterly enchanting. What a huge loss. Continue to RIP, Roy Hargrove.
Thank you Roy. You took me to a place I wanted to go. Paradise 🖤
A master and classic player.Never forgotten..Take your RESt well in peace.Eternally immortalised .Great personality.
Beautifully brilliant.
Thanks for listening
I come up short finding words to describe how much I LOVE Roy Hargrove music! I just end up shaking my head at his greatness. Amazing.
My goodness he was so full of life and joy. Rest in love Roy.
How in the world... can 76 people not Love this!?!?! That's crazy......
It's up to 92....sad😢
Damn Roy. We miss you brother.
I cry like a baby when his 🎺 creates subtle magic in my psyche .. boy, I wonder how deep this guy is to produce such profound tunes
this is one of the most beautiful pieces of art of the century
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Roy was such a wonderful trumpet talent, with shades of Miles, Wynton, Chet and Dizzy, plus his own unique take on jazz. It is so sad he left us too soon. You are certainly missed!
He also had the spirit & style of Clifford. Search for his rendition of I Remember Clifford (live) with the DizzyG Big Band in concert......mesmerizing. My take is he was the "free spirit" of Clifford Brown. Eh?

WOW.Rest in Peace,Roy Hargrove. its sad to know everytime i heard and saw many good musicians at young ages.your compositions and songs r so good.
RIP Mr. Hargrove. Thank you for giving us this wonderful music. You live on in all of us that appreciate your contribution to the arts.
Happy 52nd birthday Roy, Oct 16. Gone but well-remembered and forever appreciated.
RIP Roy, Thanks for all the great music you put out over the years. You were my favorite bro. I remembered where I was when Miles died and when you did. I was in a funk for awhile. This video makes me smile. God bless you Roy!
Great jazz piece, Thanks...
RIP Roy
Much love to you for sharing your gift which created a place of refuge for many from the harshness this life can sometimes inflict...Forever grateful...Rest In Power young King
What a wonderful jam!!!!!!!!!
Mesmerizing. Mind=Blown Day = Made Wish he was still here.
really breaks my heart. what a beautiful man. also, did not know John Batiste played with him!
roy hargrove is certainly among today's elite artists
that saxaphonist is rlly good also he plays outside the changes
Nick Blanchette totally
I wake up to Hubbard's First Light and Hargrove's Soulful EVERYDAY!!!!
I JUST put together Jon Baptiste and the Late Show :). When I saw him (I don't usually watch the Late Show) I said, where have I seen him before? HERE!
Love you Roy immensely, thank you for being such an inspiration. You're still among us through your music
Roy Hardgrove for ever ❤❤❤
man he's gone, Jazz Giant, RIP bro
Roy Hargrove used to come to Chicago on Thanksgiving weekend every year (2006-2008 roughly), in 2009 he came on New Year's weekend. I saw him at the Jazz Showcase the night after NYE, and they played an amazing set. They got an enthusiastic standing ovation that didn't stop. When they took the bandstand again for the encore, "Soulful" is what they played and it was simply the best thing I've ever heard. He dedicated it to Chicago..."...this is what I think of you, Chicago...Soulful."
He is still my favorite. I always loved his ability to channel a warm, milky tone and then step on the gas for a brighter edge when he wanted it.
Roy Hargrove was God himself on the horn.
I don't know of any artist, dead or alive, in any genre of music, conveyed such energy, spirit, and professionalism like Roy Hargrove.
Roy was such a wonderful musician! I miss his music so much. Continue to rest in peace my brother!
I gotta come back for a dose of this clip every now and then. It's like topping up my heart with a tank full of musical joy. This is where it's at..!
Right right!
I was moving to this too....Hargrove is a true jazzer!!!
Wow. Can't even explain how much I LOVE this!!!! I absolutely understand why Roy keeps movin' & smiling! Love the ending, as well, b/c you can tell that he enjoyed it just as much -- "YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!" LOL! I feel ya all the way, Roy.
breakpoint4match he’s also high af 😂
This has made it to my jazz playlist.
Heard this groove live, 8 bars in, and actually thought it was a recorded piece....blown away !! RIP Roy
Warmest condolences go out to the Hargrove family. He will ever be my shining Prince. A Diamond in the Rough. RIP Roy. I love you brother.
Man, I am only just realizing until now! When I first heard of Jon Batiste, I was so ecstatic when he played Soulful during his Jazz Night in America performance.
It is a revelation for me to see that all this time, the pianist playing in here was him!
The pure joy of his "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" at the end. So great! RIP Roy!
Roy was one of the best!
Rest in Power to Brother Roy Hargrove and Montez Coleman!!
Still can’t believe he’s gone
Not only was he the hippest of my generation..but he always knew the difference concerning the tradition.
..and that is why I loved him
God Bless You Hardgroove
I'm still in denial myself. I absolutely loved his music and was an ardent listener!
Damn. We're gonna miss you Roy. Thanks for the music. RIP our brother.
