Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah is a treasure in the jazz world. This performance was pure fire, every musician brilliant here. This concert will always hold a special place in my heart.
Christian writes and plays with the emotions from the heart like Coltrane and Miles. It's great to hear young musicians playing with such soul. Continue on your path.
I'm a 66-year-young and it's a great pleasure to see these young people, young but so mature.... A reminder: “Jazz? a music for young people who want to stay old”. Reproducing the same energy and commitment as their bebop ancestors did. I don't think they're too aware of it, either. But it's wonderful to hear them.... Scott presents his Indian-Black (or Black-Indian) roots, i.e. Afro-American Indian, I get lost in it, but without insisting too much on the injustices his community endures. This is a good thing. Or not. Maybe he doesn't want to use his music as a weapon of protest. Just listening to it is enough to make certain things clear. Bravo, Scott, to you, to your companions, to your superb music!
Bravo! An excellent band! Wish you a big success!!! I am 80 y.o. Woman, but, I can dance with your music without getting tired!keep talking, and keep playing the beautiful sound!
+Hakan ARIK I'm from Lebanon, sitting in my room listening to this. In my closet is that same exact Joy Division shirt (but sleeves intact) which my ex-girlfriend bought me from Turkey.
The song at 9:40 "West of the West" took me back to my childhood in Nigeria, listening to Fela when my parents would play his music and let it reverberate and fill our home. The song has the Afrobeat spirit he created mixed with African American jazz of the good old days and a slight hip-hop edge, not to mention the touches of rock n roll and Caribbean music. Wow Wow Wow!!! I'm a fan. Thank you for staying true Brothas & Sista and sharing your gifts with the world. Thank you.
Seeing Christian's emotions as he wales on that trumpet during KKPD was truly incredible and inspiring. Amazing performance, I've come back to watch this dozens of times.
The depth of feeling emanating from these talented young musicians is inspiring to me. This mini concert lets me know that my eternal optimism has been rewarded by their profound dedication to their craft. Play on people, play on!!!
Tears in my eyes watching and listening to KKPD; he;s expressing this feeling he has about the incident, now this feeling, all these feelings being expressed without words, just his trumpet and composition; truly a great and extremely important piece of newer jazz. This is what Jazz is suppose to be, right? Innovative, original, speaking a voice that needs to be heard; truly wonderful-
KKPD. When my sons walk out of the house I know I've prepared them as best I can for that time when they are in that situation -- but try not to imagine the scene. The screaming anguish of the notes talking about that moment and the fight to remain alive and the mellow tones coming in speaking to the eventual rise to understanding with our hearts till in the pit of our stomachs. ...my tears flowing still and amazed at how you and each of the contributing artists put together such tactile music that told that story. You are an exciting impactful artist.
The last song expresses all the despair and impotence that you had to feel in this horrible situation of extreme racism, thanks for share your history, but you knew how to transform it into music and this is called alchemy. I wish you a lot of succes in your life.
Fantastic. Met Christian Scott a few days ago before one of his concerts and had a quick chat with him. Super down to earth guy, and also extremely intelligent. Really comes out in his music

KKPD brought me to tears. That is the second time in all my life a preformance has done that. The pure rage, confusion and angst in his playing is palpable to an extent i never could have expected. The way he raises and lowers his horn is reminiscent of the sound of police sirens. his lines are so purposeful and carefully crafted. that horn is an extension of his soul. I felt it. Thankyou.

Incredible performance by all, super high energy... piano man LFields' solo on second tune (around 10:30...) is so crazy good. All you guys and gal are so soulful and burnin!
KKPD was one of three songs that have sent this insane surge of emotion through me. The return of the beginning piano line near the end, that sad sounding melody returning brought me to tears. This song goes beyond a catchy rhythm or a complex melody. This song touches your soul so hard you don't need a reason why it sounds good. Amazing Christian Scott. God Bless
DeAndre, are you saying that solving an issue of justice is bad? This single issue has no political leaning. If the republican party doesn't want to support solving racial inequality issues and the democratic party does, that simply means that the issue has mainstream political support/non-support. It doesn't make the issue inherently politically biased. It didn't have a political bias to begin with. For US citizens that support the issue, they might support the democratic party only so far as that issue is concerned. It doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the ENTIRE democratic platform/agenda.
Putting the politics aside, it's not out of proportion in comparison to any one person's experience of racism, as C. Scott demonstrates, DeAndre. Politics included, it's definitely not the liberal platform as of late that has been stoking racial tension. "Rule of law" in "destroyed communities"? Stop and frisk as a national policy, despite the overwhelming evidence of racial profiling? I mean, come on, the Republican agenda is working against progressive thought solely for political/personal gain of a few rich white people.
As long as black's are killed by law enforcement in questionable circumstances that group will not be going no-where, there will be protests every time it happens, did you even listen to what the guy said, fuckers like you are apart of the problem
DeAndre Jose Mohammed seriously, you are not going to find an audience on NPR tiny desk concerts. Show Scott some respect and back down. But white guilt? Really? When a majority of Trump supporters in the primaries report being "uneasy with racial equality" (Klinker, 2016 and Pew, 2016), and they show this by attempting to put in an autocrat who wants to heavy hand inner cities with "rule of law" (read beef up the police state against African-Americans), the overwhelming problem to face is white hate and racial resentment, which is exactly the reason behind the extraordinarily high number of black youths gunned down by the police every year. Our stats there only compare to countries with the most corrupted police forces.
***** If you remember people protesting against police brutality why is it so hard to think the shit still goes on.You are talking BULLSHIT, your talking out your ass there is no data to suggest that, whites dont get killed while un-armed and complying, whites dont get shot laying on the ground with their hands in the air. The police will treat blacks in the projets different to how they treat whites in the suburbs. And what links everything is the justice system handing down harsher sentences to blacks. You keep saying liberal like that is a insult take your head out of these politicians ass dumbfuck
I've listened to a bunch of live recordings of Twin on UA-cam and this one is definitely my favorite. It's SOOOO tight and bouncy with that Soca-style rhythm. The percussion (bass and drums) are so in the groove and you can tell the other musicians are right there with it. It's hard to single out any performer, because they are all great, but that flute is really something wonderful. So effortlessly expressive and cool. LOVE THIS! Thanks NPR, what a service you provide. I have NO idea how you capture these performances. It's such a weird space to hear such fantastic performances. It's almost like put these incredible artists in a professional space and they overthink it, on Tiny Desk, the pressure kind of drops off and they just play.
Thank you for being brave and sharing your story and making music of it. Any response you have is valid, and this... wow. Thank you for telling the truth that so many of us live out. You're beautiful.
A team member invited me to listen to NPR but introduced me to this YOUNG group first. OMG I was kinda over the Jazz scene but I have a NEW and HIGHLY admired group I HAVE to listen to at least twice a week now. For the last year honestly. Ase' Christian I absolutely love this talented well swirled group!!

This song goes beyond a catchy rhythm or a complex melody. This song touches your soul so hard you don't need a reason why it sounds good. Amazing Christian Scott. God Bless
Thanks for sharing that story, Christian. Hard to speak up when people want you just to be quiet.
I would love to see Scott do a Ted Talk. He's a powerful speaker and story-teller. Amazing.
These times bring me back to this video.
The last piece hit me on my chest... I felt that man.
WONDERFUL concert! Incredibly talented young musicians with such a rich flavor, texture, and influence in their music!
