+Michi Machi seems like he's a pretty darn serious guy. thats probably what makes him so funny. he's barely ever kidding around, he's very serious, and then he's also not giving a fuck and/or not taking himself seriously.

Despite the fact that this is far from a great performance of this piece, it’s really nice that someone made a good video of it. It’s a beautiful composition. The version on the record is incredible and seeing them play it live is quite moving.
    Thanks for sharing this.

What in particular about this performance diminished it for you? I prefer it to the album version...always fascinated/puzzled by the subjectivity of such things, but pleased that we share an appreciation for this group.

@@brysondockrill4378 A fair question, and it’s possible that there’s something about this performance I’m missing. I’ve been BP many many times, and three times with Joshua. Part of what’s better about the recorded version for me may be superficial: sound. I think the drums sound a bit lifeless here. But I also sense something a bit tentative in Redman here. I saw this line up in Chicago and that concert was a transcendent musical event. Really. You could tell that all of them felt like they came together is an unusually psychic way at that show. I think that rhythmically challenging compositions can be tougher to let yourself become emotionally given over to. And there something about the second section that feels that way here, whereas in other performances it’s seemed more emotional and less cerebral to me. I hope that makes some sense. There’s no accounting for taste. Cheers.

@@butuh1324 I think that angular tentative quality is what I like about it. There's a measured exasperation bordering on obnoxiousness I resonate with...especially Joshua blowing so hard he's squawking out as it climaxes and falls apart. I suppose I'm enjoying virtuosos playing badly goodly, with taste. These guys excel at putting their fingers on the sore spot. Very cheeky. The drums do sound a bit flat, but I find the album a bit dry and flat as well.

@@brysondockrill4378 It’s true his drums do sound very dry and not at all adorned by production on the record.

+Jack Mason And if purists forget that "jazz" didn't grow out of only one musical ideology but many, then they probably never knew it in the first place...

    • @dillonvado

+Jack Mason Also, even if it isn't jazz does that mean that it isn't beautiful music? I understand it's not directly bluesy in the traditional sense, doesn't "swing" necessarily, but they are a group of very aware and conscientious musicians who definitely draw their inspiration from a huge range of sources, jazz being one of them. I would agree it's maybe difficult to call this "jazz" but ultimately what the heck does it matter? that's my two cents anyway, The Bad Plus have always been one of my favorite groups.

This attitude is why jazz is dead. No one wants to listen to a stagnant genre that is stuck in the past.

Jazz is one of the most inclusive musical heritages of the world, narrowing it down can only be a practice of reductionism and pragmatism, it's not about labels, it's about the sound and the culture embracing it.
