Tommy The Hit man Hearns is my all time favorite fighter. He was a bad ass. He had fights from 130 pounds all the way up to Cruiserweight. If he was just a bit smarter as a fighter he'd have been indestructible. He was almost 6 feet 2 inches tall too. Great with both hands. R.I.P Emanuel Stewart and KRONK GYM, great trainer and human being AND Kronk was Detroit legendary gym.
Wilfredo was a hell of a fighter. I remember when he won the championship from Palomino, about halfway through the bout Wilfredo started showboating and taunting Palomino. At the time Wilfredos father was one of his cornermen. When Benitez returned to the corner, his father stepped into the ring and slapped Wilfredo in the face and said “that man is the champion. Don’t you ever disrespect the champion”. Wilfredo went on to win the fight.
That didn’t happen in the Palomino fight. You got your fights mixed up. Benitez father Gregoria slapped him lightly in the rematch with Harold Westin in March of 1979. Benitez first title defense after beating Palomino. Benitez did no show boating in the Palomino fight.

@@watchdogsthebeast3540 all these guys were amazing in my eyes. Sure, someone had to take a loss, but that’s part of boxing and it may very well be due to the saying that styles make fights. @@blankuser5943 Pertaining to the 1979 Leonard-Benitez fight,That stoppage was unnecessary/controversial. Benitez was okay to go the rest of the way. I think the promoters were behind that premature stoppage. They wanted to Really Hype up a Leonard-Duran showdown for 1980. Letting it go the distance would've made a Leonard-Benitez rematch a fan clamoring necessity/mandatory, wheras, the promoters Really just wanted the winner of Leonard-Benitez to face Duran ASAP.
Jing Qi. That "iron chin" which he relied on to go the distance in numerous fights is likely what has led to his present affliction with dementia pugilistica. We didn't see his face after Hearns beat on it for 15 rounds, but it was described as a swollen mess. Amazing that he would get hit that often given his ability to slip punches, as he did against Sugar Ray Leonard.

Everyone talks about the four horsemen being Hearns, Hagler, Sugary Ray, and the hands of stone. However, Benitez went 15 ROUNDS with the hitman, and took some of his strongest blows. Benitez deserves to be in the conversation, as he was an excellent fighter, and had one hell of a heart. Greatest decade for boxing, and I didn't even grow up in it. Legendary.
Back when boxing was the sweet science. Champion boxers trained hard and came to fight. Benitez was one of the most technically sound pugilists to ever grace the square ring. He was a short guy but so scientifically skilled that you had to respect his skills. You can't just walk in carelessly on him. He was a master at countering an opponent's weaknesses. A thinking boxer.
H Keshi Benitez was 5'10 just that Hearns was 6'1 Benitez crouching maybe made him look short to you but he was actually a good height for a welterweight jr middleweight plus Hearns reach was ridiculous
Benitez wasn't of short stature boxing wise... Hearns just happened to be quite tall (6'2") for the weight division, that's all. Benitez was about 5'10", the same as Sugar Ray Leonard.
Hearns is my favorite boxer ever with his hard punching thrown with lightning speed , probably thought he could take out Benitez in 3 rounds but as like everyone else he didn't realize that Benitez had great stamina and a was a master at defense and could take the hardest of punches -a great fight shame there had to be a loser
What a magnificent era in boxing the 1970s and 80s were. You had the likes of Tommy Hearns, Wilfred Benitez, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, Julio Cesar Chavez, Bobby Chacon, Hector Camacho, Edwin Rosario, Salvador Sanchez, Wilfredo Gomez, Ray boom boom Mancini, Alexis Arguello, Aron Pryor, the list goes on and on truly one of the greatest eras in boxing history. Benitez era increible. Gran campeon.
Hearns was awesome when we all amatur boxers on the westside of Detroit at the then Kronk recreation center off Livernois Ave. He was called the Hit Man Hearns, if he caught you right it was lights out, he was long and for him to be 6"0 posed a problem for other fights regardless who it was, you know you was in a fight with him. One of the greatest welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight and cruiserweight champions of our time.
Back where fighters didn’t dodge or duck anybody. The best fought the best and in their prime. Boxing at its best in the 80s. Best decade in boxing in my opinion!
So many great memories from this era of boxers. Like someone stated, the era when the greats would fight other greats. Sure there were moments when there was a 2-3 year wait but you knew they were going to battle at some point. Love the classic staredown. These days, fighters get that close, hard telling what is going to happen. Those were some Gladiators back then.
Great fighters. Benitez had some balls to face up with Tommy, who was a murderous fighter at this stage of his career. Wilfredo had some beautiful skills. Tommy had to respect his counter.
INdeed. Benitez had some good head movement. If I was a boxer I would be scared shitless to fight Hearns. Dude bust up eye sockets. Reach advantage is bananas. His power is at most men's arm length.

Boxing at it’s best. Do like a trip down nostalgia lane. Brilliant.
Two incredible physical specimans of Manhood. Great stuff. Hearns was still throwing bombs in the 15th. Great sportsmen.
Benitez an absolute master fighting off the ropes. One of the most naturally gifted fighters in the history of boxing.
Sometimes he even trained for fights. He trained for 2 weeks to face Leonard. He wasn't a natural, he was a Supernatural!
Nad Navlis Gomez had the same problem.... partying, sniffing coke... undiciplined.... Camacho same shit.... sorry to say... Best of the best!!!🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
who won who was
Boxcar Ent. He was known as the Bible of boxing, glad I witnessed him box
You got that right.
This was an era of "great boxing" ... elite boxers on display.
KRAS 4 brawlers
Yeah. Really great era. Haven't seen the likes of it since.
That Hearns and Benitez was freaking true to form Warriors at the highest level....
Best part was, those two went to war for 15 rounds and when the final bell sounded they hugged; warriors showing each other respect.
Benitez is a freakn warrior.. didn't know this fight existed. Tommy hearns usually dispose of his opponents in early rounds but Benitez is something else man.
Dino Tube I don't think anybody was able to slip as many of Hearns' punches as Benitez did. Not even Leonard.
Mejor no suban nada!!sólo es basura!!😫
Yup amazing
From the very start, during the face off, Benitez was not in the least bit intimidated by Hearns
@@RRRRapify Benitez was a consummate professional who gave the best fighters of his generation (Leonard and Hearns) a pretty busy night's work even if he wasn't at his particular best.
Tommy Hearns was a great fighter as was Wilfred Benitez.
Tommy was better.
@@trekranger 🤣
I just like the hitman better
@J. FILL leave Trinidad out and you are absolutely right.
Tommys long, long hands are the advantage, but great fighter Benitez. Don't forget in Hagler in this primetime of Worldboxing, he was marvelous.
great fight . you don't see fight like this ones anymore .
the hit man vs the radar .
Benitez was definitely one of my favorite fighters. Every fighter in that era knew he was good. Also,, Benitez was fast especially when he slipped and evaded punches.🥊🥊
Much respect for each other at the end of the fight. It's rare to see such class and sportsmanship in today's bouts.
THAT is real boxing and such brilliant sportsmanship and great respect. It warms the heart watching the boys embrace post fight and smile for the great fight. I love this post for all of that thanks Jimmy Pince.
Benitez's jab was glorious! They don't make fighters like these guys anymore!
Grew up in that era and Hearns was always my favorite.
Mine too
0:05 tough staredown; 14:10 friendly hug. Great warriors.
I agree
Hearns fought as fresh and ferocious in the 15th as he did in the first...amazing display of fitness and conditioning.
Legend and a good friend of mine UA-cam K9BOXING We actually Sparred b4
@@K9boxing, wow, great story. Im from Detroit & tell people when we were in our worst of times, we still had our music & Tommy Hearns. Still watch the Hagler fight hoping for a different outcome, lol. Did you work with the PAL at all ? I used to work with a couple older gentleman & bad ass boxers in their day, Bobby Evans & Frank O Neil Jr. Bobby knew Tommy pretty good.
Absolutely true!! Hearns conditioning was 2nd to none.
Muy valiente ese boricua. No cualquiera le aguantaba tantos rounds a Hearns. Mis respetos a Wilfredo Benítez
This division and the fights that came out of it during the 80's were unbelievable
These two fighters were warriors. Can’t compare.
A great fight between two all-time greats. Thanks for posting!
Yep, great fighters. The prelim was Gomez vs. Pintor. What a night for boxing.
+Kedbuka your right I saw that gomez pinter fight before the main and was better than the main event and only paid 7 bucks for auditorium pay per view that little lupe pintor is as tough as a pit bull.
Kedbuka That entire card was great but, yeah, you are right about Gomez/Pintor. They were
both relentless. What a fight that was!
matty
The fight of the year and or decade. Gomez was amazing.
Legendary.
Benetiez has to be one of the most difficult and underrated champions in history...! Great Fight!!!
Great sportsmanship...great fight.
History.
These guys really brought the best out of each other
Hearns is my favorite boxer ever with his hard punching thrown with lightning speed , probably thought he could take out Benitez in 3 rounds but as like everyone else he didn't realize that Benitez had great stamina and a was a master at defense and could take the hardest of punches -a great fight shame there had to be a loser
To all those who have left us may you all rest in peace in the presence of Almighty God in the mighty name of Jesus ✝️🙏🏻 you are sorely missed and will never be forgotten 🇺🇸🇵🇷🇲🇽🇵🇦
man i LOVE these old matches... i remember watching this one when i was fugggin TWELVE years old... this isht is GREAT!!! i just wish i could find these old fights on dvd in HD... the full fights... not just highlights
Thank you for this magnificent fight! True boxing and man I miss those days!
No olviden a carlos ortiz
Wow this makes me feel old ..i remember watching this fight
Wilfredo the Radar Benitiz was one hell of a fighter.Respect from Scotland.
That face off was intense. Worthy of s Hollywood film.
Before Roy Jones and Floyd Jr there was Wilfed the defensive guru
J. FILL true my grandpa used to fix fights but he says a few of them are real and it’s pretty obvious when they’re fake
J. FILL I don’t wanna say who he is but I’ll just say he has way too much money
@J. FILL yah that's true...
Watch from 1:11 to the end of the round.
Locche is the best defensive boxer of all time.
Gracias Titanes.
This what you call a fight boxing match none of that cute shit mayweather man to man head up
It will always amaze me how fresh they still were after 15 rounds.
Classic faceoff and greatest faceoff ever!! I miss both you legends!!
The true era of boxing 🥊 The BEST Fought the BEST
Back where fighters didn’t dodge or duck anybody. The best fought the best and in their prime. Boxing at its best in the 80s. Best decade in boxing in my opinion!
Hearns,Hopkins,Forman,Holmes and Hagler had the most intimidating stare downs in my opinion
Hacker ufff
And Trinidad!!
Sonny Liston
@@plantbased5673 That's what I was going to say!
Tyson by a LONG way
So many great memories from this era of boxers. Like someone stated, the era when the greats would fight other greats. Sure there were moments when there was a 2-3 year wait but you knew they were going to battle at some point. Love the classic staredown. These days, fighters get that close, hard telling what is going to happen. Those were some Gladiators back then.
I feel so grateful to have lived through this era. The motor city cobra, Ali, sugar ray, marvelous Marvin and so many more.
Benitez man!!! What a great boxer!! The golden era of puerto rican boxing!!
Great fight. The talent around at that time was astonishing.
Hearns beats Duran .Duran beats a men that beat Hearns .
Hearns was one of the great at-a-distance punchers. Often walked inside his best range for some reason.
My respect to Benitez who stood up fought, n earned Hearns respect. The only Latino to go 15 rounds!!! Arriba Benitez!
Benetiz had the best stare downs.
When Tommy went into "kill mode" he was scary
Couldn't be intimidated Benitez.I call him now watching this fight.Sure was in a class of his!!!
Thanks for the Memories
I love Hearns' sportsmanship, it should be taken as an example for any sport
Benítez grande entre grandes. Además humilde, callado, muy digno de alabar.👍👌💯🌎
wilfredo benitez ,the bible of boxing! Gracias campeon!
The gents embrace at the final bell. Beautiful show of respect. Love y’a lads.❤
Thanks for this post! Grateful for UA-cam!
that was great to see 2 warriors just embrace each other after 15 Rounds brilliant
Wilfredo Benitez,Wilfredo Gomez,Macho Camacho y Trinidad.Grandes del Boxeo.De PR.Para Latinoamerica.Siempre lo recordaremos
The Hitman was one of the best ever he never ran or ducted other fighters action packed with devastating knockout power he got robbed in that last fight with Leonard no draw he won
Hearns wasnt afraid to get hit or get knocked down or out....he just wanted to inflict pain on his opponent at all cost
patrick y that's right Patrick that's why back in the day when he was going to fight everybody was around the TV to watch it Tommy Hearns came to destroy
u right total b.s. Sugar lost. i also believe ray woulda got killed by tom if they fought at a higher weight. tom looked thin as a pin. also thought sugar ran and hit low against hagler then fought don lalond a 1 armed fighter at 15 pounds below his natural weight class, ray is a great but he was the original mayweather, winning fights in the negotiations. shit man, 15 ROUNDS BACK IN THE DAY?
Marc, I agree. The hitman was always my favorite fighter.
marc asger Agree. I think Hearns and duran are the only ones who were able to gave him hell in leonard's prime.
I just think it's funny that as a boy I thought Hearns was one of the meanest looking dudes around. Later, I learned that he is a calm, friendly, gentleman (outside the ring.)
Thommys a classy guy.i 've always liked him.
@bigcatfb You're on the money there my man. Tommy didn't talk about it, he just did it. I've been watching boxing for 35 years and The Hitman is the one I always come back to. My favourite by a country mile.
@Azbycxdwevfugthsirjqkplomn McPinth I've always wanted to meet Hearns and hope he's doing well today.
@@stargell777 he's a sheriff😇
@@jadelove1820 crime must be down where he's a sheriff. Imagine Hearns himself responding to a disturbance call to your pad. He wouldn't have to say a damned thing. He could just stare you down and it would all be over.
unos guerreros en el ring que buenos pugilistas THANKS FOR THOSE CLASICS
Not a single clench. Terrific stuff from both guys 🥊
