From someone who has only purchased Macintosh computers for the last 35 years, I find some of Apple’s recent interface choices to be a confusing mess. This is a good example of that. However, this channel is wonderful for explaining such things.
Yep. (30 years Mac-ista here) I groan every time Tim Cook is on stage announcing the "Amazing ALL NEW Apple keyboard" and the stupid 'caps lock' is on the screen right behind his head. The effort I have to make to disable that waste of space should be what's required to set up an All Caps Lock option for those few people who want it. And of course you can't reassign that key to anything else, like another Enter/Return button. (How many millions of dollars could Apple have made over the years if they just got rid of it? Maybe allow the people who wanted it to reasign the fn key.) This video has nothing of interest for me - none of the 'options' presented are of any value. I've never used the fn key for anything. And yes the Globe symbol is on the keyboard of my new 2021 MacBook Pro. I doubt I'll ever have a use for that either. The System menu for keyboards is part of the mess. I have no idea how to switch between the wireless keyboard I'm using or the one on my MBP. 99% of the options offered have zero value. (I also loathed the 'Feature strip' on my 2017 MBP. It never did anything useful for any application I used (I rarely do video editing), and I kept triggering things when I'd type in a number - I had no idea I was dragging my pinky across the F keys. So I turned everything off except volume and screen brightness so I could leave as much of it as blank as possible. It was a stupid idea. It could've been great if it really did valuable tasks contextually for different applications. I'm happy to see it gone. Apple: me and millions of other people told you so in 2017 and you just didn't listen.) As someone who types a lot, the punctuation keys or anything my pinkies key are a perennial problem. "1" and "` ~" are often mistyped. (I put hot glue pips on the Home Keys, and the odd numbers, and some of the punctuation - it helps. Where it's a Killer App is on the dongle Numerical keypad. I pipped the odd numbers and can touch type numbers. ) On my Apple Bluetooth keyboard I bought the big Yellow letters/numbers stickers. I touch type but they still help a lot. Of course the hot glue pips on top. Why hasn't Apple either figured out how to make a better keyboard, or come up with some tutorials and practice for these common mistakes? On the problematic 2017 keyboard however I did like the shorter key stroke distance. It almost eliminated typing transposed letters. It did hurt my fingers a little, but I quickly got used to not pressing so forcefully. The problems with dust I also had. Cleaned them a couple of times, then took it in for the replacement. (I also had a chronic problem with the track pad - every 30-40 seconds of typing it would jump the cursor back to where I'd last inserted it. Made writing almost impossible -- this is why I started using Bluetooth keyboards. I covered over the trackpad with a thin piece of Teflon -otherwise the keyboard would've been entirely useless. Apple never acknowledged this problem. I duplicated it on every MBP I tried in every Apple Store I visited in the US, the UK and Ireland. (Maybe I just have different impedance in my hands than other humans??) The replacement keyboard was the 2018 version, mostly solved the problem, not entirely, but I was able to remove the Teflon.) I've barely used the keyboard on my 2021 MBP (I'm using it now) . When I do so far no cursor jumping, same short snappy keystroke as the 2017-18 so no transposed letters. My 2011 also never cursor jumped, not once. (I tested it against the 2017.) If anyone remembers some of the ergonomic keyboards from the 1990s - there were a couple that were brilliant. Easy to transition to. (Microsoft made one in the 2000s that I think were only for Shaq and LeBron James - everything was so big and far apart. How do these powerful companies design junk?) I've looked at ergonomic keyboards - so far none seem as good as those 1990s ones. Chorded typing, also from the 1990s was pretty amazing. I spent about 20 minutes on one at MacWorld and picked it up quickly. They were about $500 so much too expensive at the time. And thanks to UA-cam for giving me the space to yammer on and on about my pet bugaboos. Now I won't just start blurting all this out when I go to the Apple Store later today.....

I watch close to all of the content you make, Gary, and this is one of those occasions where I'm gobsmacked: I use Japanese a lot, and short of getting a Mac with a Japanese keyboard, I have spent the last nine years or so thinking that the only way to switch between input sources was to go dragging my pointer up to the top menu bar, and switching between English and Japanese keyboards clicking around up there. (To complicate matters even further, Japanese has its own submenu of three input sources of its own!). I can't imagine the time I'm now going to be able to save. by just FNing between them all now. Amazed. I'm a very VERY happy Patreon supporter. Your content is just magnificent.
This was awesome. I am using an iPad Pro and have only used the globe key for emoji’s. By holding it down it brought up several of the options you mentioned. I really want a full computer!!🙄. Sometime soon….a MacBook Pro. 14 in…yep. Then I need to sign up for your classes. Thank you for all the tips. I really appreciate your understandable tips. Great Video ✨
I cannot believe you did not mention the most important to me at least function : FN + Backspace gives you the Delete key as known from windows. Took me some years(?) of Mac use to learn that. It just is not mentioned anywhere
Thank you! I finally have F2 back for excel, on the M1 MBA laptop keyboard!.... I'm a windows user, and have converted FN key to CMD - to mimic CNTRL+C and CNTRL+V etc.....
I always operate a Mac, Dell and HP laptop so I get what you’re saying, and it’s important for people to get to know whatever system they are using, but in my experience most people won’t ever get past browsing the web.
Also on Mac OS X 12 there are couple of other non-configurable shortcuts: Fn+m - transfer focus to the menu bar and select system menu (apple menu). Fn+h - Show/Hide Desktop. Fn+e - Show Emoji window. Fn+a - transfer focus to the action bar and select a finder icon.
I have the extended English Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. I will use the blank f keys to put äöü for German and ñ for Spanish so I don’t have to buy two additional keyboards.
Son of a gun! I bought my MacBook Pro in 2013 (and it’s still running!) and the Genius told me the fn key was to destroy the machine like that cassette from Mission Impossible. Alas, Gary set me straight. But I’ll still avoid it, just in case.
Nice video, though it would have been useful and a a bit easier to understand if you had mentioned what the "letters fn" actually mean, because I don't know if this is that obvious, especially for non-native speakers like me. It means "function", analog to the F-keys which are the Function keys
Even though I don’t yet have a Mac, this was still interesting to watch (i do plan on getting one within the next few months, although i have not yet decided if i will get an apple keyboard (if i do get one i will likely go with a touch ID model), or if i will just use the windows keyboard that i have connected to the KVM switch)
Windows user here who switched to Mac a week back. My windows keyboard does not have fn/globe key. If I substitute "caps-lock" for fn/globe key, how do I activate caps-lock ?
So you have a non-Apple keyboard? I suppose then that the Caps Lock key is a good option. You don't really need a Caps Lock key. If you want to type a capital letter, then just hold down Shift while you type.
At 0:35, you show an old extended Apple keyboard. That's what I have except the key labeled "fn" on yours is labeled "help" on mine. Keyboard Viewer shows it as "?' in a circle and highlights it when I press it. However, the key doesn't seem to have any effect. (Certainly doesn't have an effect on the function keys nor does it cause help to appear.)
Great videos one question if I have a doc that I want to copy but it’s all in caps font is there a way I can re copy into lower case. I know windows can do it. But is it available in Pages
Im confused I have a new magic keyboard and FN Keys option is not showing up in keyboard preference menu also My volume keys on the keyboard are bound to F keys and are not responding I dont have any options in keyboard preferences to turn of F Keys HELP!!
I want to customize my new Mac's fn key to function the same way the ctrl key does in Windows..for example, I want to use fn+tab for switching tabs, fn+a to select all text, fn+c to copy, fn+t to open a new tab etc..this isn't possible??
You can switch the modifier keys around by going to System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard, then click the Modifier Keys button. But I strongly recommend you do not do this but use it as intended. You'll need the FN key for certain things, and you'll need the other modifier keys for other things. Setting FN as another Command key will mean you'll have trouble doing certain things because you'll have no FN key. Plus, your example is impossible as most apps use Control+tab to switch tabs and Command+a to select all, etc. So you can switch FN to Control for the first example, but you would switch it to Command for the second example.
Dear Gary thank you so much for all your videos--I'm so glad that I found your channel! You are explaining everything so well that even a newbie like me can understand! Is there a keyboard short cut to lock or unlock the fn function so we don't have to go into the system preference every time we want to change the setting?nFor example, in Windows, if you hit fn and esc, it will turn on fn lock and if it hit that combo again, it will turn off the fn lock. If there is not such a keyboard shortcut, is there a way to program it or an app to install to set such a feature up?
You'll need to experiment with your keyboard settings and maybe contact the keyboard maker. But if the keyboard doesn't support the Mac FN key then you'll need to ditch it and get something that does.
I ‘m probably in minority but I really like the Touch Bar, lots of useful functions specific to my apps and most used programmes and I can always switch to functions by pressing fn button, I think it’s a mistake by apple to end this capability.
With the Globe key set to bring up emojis, I find it really difficult to get this to work - it seems almost unusable, needing a very precise short tap to do anything. Think I'll stick with the old version, unless anyone' has any tips? This is on the new black keyboard which goes with the Studio Display.
@@macmost Thank you so much! I have my MBA M1 in clamshell mode and my global button will not work to bring up my emojis, I have tried everything! @macmostvideo can you change this shortcut to something else? Thanks Garry!
@@macmost The “Fn key” is a button that doesn’t show a character when pressed so pretty you have to press the “Fn key” and only the “Fn key”. In other words the “Fn key” needs to be physically pressed itself for the actions to take place, you can not use a placebo or macro bc the button isn’t being pressed on the keyboard
@@kidhuddy101 Right. It is a modifier key, like Command, Control, Option and Shift. I'm not familiar with icue or razer. What is it you are trying to do, exactly?
@@macmost Exactly what I'm looking for, however icue and razer are made for PC. I dont think they were expecting Mac users to need fn key macro shortcut. I have a 2016 imac pro with 2018 keyboard. Its impossible use the Fn key as mouse button, I guess. might switch to PC
@@macmost Except there is no touchbar when the MBP is closed. I should have mentioned I am using a wireless keyboard with finger print sensor. Thank you for your great videos.
@@AnilCoumar Oh, you didn't mention an external keyboard, just an external screen. In that case it probably depends on the keyboard. Is it Apple's? If so, it should work the same.
Great video….99% of the time I am using the icon on the F keys, not a different function of the F keys. I have mine set to open emojis, and I actually find it annoying that it exists in the first place…..but its here.
Sadly didn't help me... Trying to figure out what the Hell key acts as the "Fn" key when using a WINDOWS usb keyboard connected to a Macbook smh. I guess nobody knows.
Probably depends on your keyboard. Did you go to System Preferences/Settings, Keyboard and look there? Maybe there is a separate panel in System Preferences/Settings for your keyboard that was added by software drivers you installed for the keyboard? Have you checked the manufacturer's site for support on this? Also, in System Settings, Keyboard Shortcuts, look for Modifier Keys and maybe you'll get some clue there. Hard to say without having your particular keyboard to test.

Does not address the issue of Not being able to remap the GLOBE key on the native keyboard, to the Fn key that is present on so many external keyboards. I have no idea why Mac thinks this is an advancement; makes the "Fn+Esc" quick-toggle between the F1 keys as normal vs. Brightness, etc. an Impossibility on Native Mac Keyboards. Which, DEFEATS THE VERSATILITY OF SUCH A HOTKEY! If I have my MX Keys 3, I don't really NEED such functionality. How do you map the GLOBE Key on a native M1 Keyboard, to act as the Fn key? It cannot be done. Bogus. Trash.
If you have a third-party keyboard like that, it is up to the manufacturer to add that sort of functionality to the software that comes with it. Apple isn't going to build in customizations for third-party hardware like that.
A Touch Bar is a narrow touch screen that Apple used to put as the top row on many MacBook models for years. The current 13-inch MacBook Pro still has one.
@@macmost thank you very much. I am a brand new iMac user after (30 years of PC) and watch a LOT of the Mac tutorials as I find the use of jargon and many of the different functions on the Mac are not intuitive. When you try to use the help function, unless you get the wording in your query or question accurate (difficult when you don’t know the key words) then the help option, is often no “help” at all! Very frustrating, and a L O N G learning process, much longer than I had expected. One tiny example, … on the PC keyboard there is the option of a “delete” key that allows the user to site the cursor and delete the characters AFTER that location. To date I have not figured out how to find/use that option, in spite of extensive investigation! Any suggestions? Any assistance you can offer will help reduce my pulse rate exponentially! 🤓 Kind regards and thank you, from Auckland, New Zealand 🇳🇿
@@rogerhawkins6433 That's called "forward delete" and you can do it on your Mac with FN+Delete. But I honestly can say that in 40 years of using computers I have never used the forward delete function, just the regular delete (AKA "backspace").

In my experience, learning (and thereby teaching) is a two way street. However, a disengaged pupil will have a much greater negative impact on the process than a disengaged teacher. Gary, consider making a “just try it” vid. Tell people how they can protect their data and their machines so they can literally just check any box and evaluate the effect. I just got a new MBP with Ventura. It doesn't have "Use F1..Keys" as an option. Is the function gone in Ventura?
System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Function Keys.
@@macmost Thank you!!!
Not sure what you mean by "fn lock." What is it you are trying to accomplish? What's your end goal?
Hi You likely can help me. I inadvertently deleted my Safari History 2 days ago. How can I recover my history? Thanks
There's no backup for that.
I just turned the globe key into another command key... No regrets
What if I don't have the option of the "Use f1, f2" checkbox? It is an apple keyboard so I don't understand
Which keyboard do you have? Maybe you have a MacBook with a Touch Bar instead.
@@macmost it’s an apple keyboard and I have a Mac
@@usctrojanfreak So no Touch Bar? If there is no Touch Bar, then you should see this checkbox as long as you are looking in the right place.
@@macmost no Touch Bar. It’s very frustrating. Brand new keyboard from Best Buy
@@usctrojanfreak Are you sure it is an Apple keyboard then? Does it have an FN key?
FN from a connected windows keyboard does not work. Any workarounds?
You'll need to experiment with your keyboard settings and maybe contact the keyboard maker. But if the keyboard doesn't support the Mac FN key then you'll need to ditch it and get something that does.
@@macmost Hello. I think fn/Globe key is something new, and macOS key mapping is limited. A new mac keyboard is the best solution I guess.
@@macmostThank you ...
I ‘m probably in minority but I really like the Touch Bar, lots of useful functions specific to my apps and most used programmes and I can always switch to functions by pressing fn button, I think it’s a mistake by apple to end this capability.
I liked it too, but didn't use it much because I switch between desktop and laptop so only have it some of the time.
I will definitely turn this on and try the emoji bring up option
With the Globe key set to bring up emojis, I find it really difficult to get this to work - it seems almost unusable, needing a very precise short tap to do anything. Think I'll stick with the old version, unless anyone' has any tips? This is on the new black keyboard which goes with the Studio Display.
I still use Control+Command+Space since my extended keyboard has the FN key all the way to the top right.
@@macmost Thank you so much! I have my MBA M1 in clamshell mode and my global button will not work to bring up my emojis, I have tried everything! @macmostvideo can you change this shortcut to something else? Thanks Garry!
@@liamsplace6702 Check in System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard and you should see the setting there.
@@macmost thank you, I will try that. Thanks for answering my question, I love your videos! Take care Liam
how can I copy/paste the "fn key" for macro or shortcuts for apps like icue and razer synapse? plz help
Not sure as I don't use those. I'm sure if you check their documentation/support you'll find an answer there.
Wonder how the globe key would work with a M1 MBP connected to an external monitor?
I don’t think it would make any difference which screen you were using.
@@macmost Thank you. Yes, it is an Apple keyboard.
@@AnilCoumar So why not just try it?
Great video….99% of the time I am using the icon on the F keys, not a different function of the F keys. I have mine set to open emojis, and I actually find it annoying that it exists in the first place…..but its here.
Something I find useful, is the ability to press FN+ENTER for instances that the the ENTER won’t work on its own
(Like in Shortcuts).
Hard to say without having your particular keyboard to test.
how to use on os Ventura?
pls help guys
Use in what way? What are you trying to do, exactly?
i dont have those option on my mac (1:13) 😮💨
Which Mac (exactly do you have), which keyboard (if separate) and which version of macOS?

Not sure what question you are asking here.
What is a “Touch Bar”? FGS!
Kind regards and thank you, from Auckland, New Zealand 🇳🇿
@@rogerhawkins6433 That's called "forward delete" and you can do it on your Mac with FN+Delete. But I honestly can say that in 40 years of using computers I have never used the forward delete function, just the regular delete (AKA "backspace").
@@macmost thanks so much… I’ve been wading through “the help manual” … but not knowing what the process is called was messing with my head!
Thank you very much - I should have gone to the global body of knowledge earlier rather than waiting until now 🤓👍😄
I hate that fn key
EACH and EVERY time you mention something physical, like a specific button somewhere, PLEASE SHOW IT. SHOW IT WELL.
Should have SHOWN US the new keyboard earlier on, when you first mentioned it.
Maybe radio is where you will shine.
You're not talking to ALL Mac experts. Some of us are BEGINNERS.
You did, later, show us the new keyboard, but late.
Which do you think we'd rather look at, the new keyboard or your face?
But I show it right at the beginning of the video. Several different keyboard variations too. Right at 0:28.
Loving the Mac toolbox by the way ;)
