  • A short video on the variable drive of a bandsaw
    I picked this Black & Decker DN339 up at an auction, it had a problem with the variable speed drive, this turned out to be simply because it had been standing for some time and needed lubricating.
    But I thought it might be worth showing how this variable drive works, it’s simply a sprung loaded v pulley that opens/closes with tension resulting in a smaller/larger diameter of the drive.
    This is the mechanism, it’s simply sprung loaded with a thin v belt, It will cut metal (although I’d not use it for much more than brass) but I have found it excellent on aluminium, plastics & of course wood.
    I know it’s a bit of an odd video for me but I had not seen a drive like this before on this scale.
    Anyway, hope you find it as interesting as I did!!!

    Thats great
    I've just bought one of these in an auction, the speed controller is just like the CVT transmission you get in a modern scooter, very clever on a black and decker machine :-)

    I guess seeing it had a problem you got it cheap - well done. I always say that the best tool I ever bought was my little bandsaw - so much easier to de-gate castings with than a hacksaw! I suspect that soon you will be agreeing with me 😊… Martin

      HI,
      I am sorry to say I have long parted with this tool.
      However from what I remember, there is a blade tension screw on the top. deadjust so the blade becomes slack and remove the blade.

    What's the thickest depth of wood this bandsaw is comfortable cutting?

      Hi Jeremy.
      I no longer have this unit as I have a larger saw now.
      The largest I used it for while I had it was about 2" round & I took it gently.

    Hello which part required luberecaiting please

    • @WarGrade
      @WarGrade  4 роки тому

      The only part I lubricated David was the spring variator that is mounted on the end of the motor shaft (seen 3:06 in the video).
      Other than that, just a wee bit of grease on threads.

    I was given one of these bandsaws sometime ago. I have just ordered a new blade for it. I have stripped it down as the vaiable speed rod is hard to operate. I have a question, is the drive belt suppose to move over onto the other pulley when you torn the rod?

    • @WarGrade
      @WarGrade  3 роки тому

      I think the other pully is for the non variable speed model (you change speeds much like you do on a pillar drill).
      On the variable speed version only the motor pulley changes .

    What happened to the dulcet tones of your normal narration. Text was good but reading moving text is a pain compared with just having a listen. Looks like a nice unit to have in the shop.
