@libertinarey thrawn is all about the art of war. He says this on several occasions. From understanding his enemies so he can find the best way to defeat them or finding the imperfections in his troops to make them better fighters. If there's one thing about him in the books that is also made clear is that he doesn't understand people very well. Societies, groups, individual motivation if it helps him beat them, but he has no comprehension why Sabine - even though yes, he knows she and Ezra are close - would justify helping to locate an adversary (Thrawn) that almost dismantled the rebellion she fought so hard for single-handedly on that connection alone. The calculus of maybe saving one person in exchange for putting everything she fought for in the balance doesn't make sense to him.

"...you risked the fate of the Galaxy on that belief?
    -You wouldn't understand.
    -...perhaps not."
    THIS!!!
    THIS is perfect Thrawn!!
To those who are not familiar to the character, let me explain: Thrawn indeed is an admiral, but first and foremost, is a researcher, a historian. His greatest redeeming quality is the respect he has for the cultures and histories of those he conquers. Thrawn does not seek power. First and foremost, he seeks knowledge.
As such, Thrawn is not an arrogant, condescending jerk. As a man of knowledge, he cannot afford to be condescending. He knows that there are things he still does not know, and most importantly, things that he, despite his vast intellect, cannot comprehend.
THAT is what we see in this short exchange, and what Dave Filoni perfectly understands about Thrawn: he's humble. He knows his own strenghts, but he also knows that a man of his stature and intellect HAS to acknowledge his own weaknesses.

Before disney his whole gimmick is how well he was able to understand other peoples motivations and thought processes, this is what made him so dangerous and an effective strategist rather then simply bruteforcing through higher IQ and outsmarting everyone in the classical sense. Hell i’m not even sure og thrawn has even been portrayed in this humble manner you are so enthused about, been a while since read heir to the empire, but i feel that description actually applies more to pelleaon who in his pov chapters certainly does frequently lament over his shortcomings.

Yeah Filoni is a bit of a hack but he does understand why people loved Thrawn. That scene in Rebels where he says he cannot truly understand the power of the Force to Ezra, but says he can take him to someone who does (i.e. the Emperor) really makes clear that he gets the character, that he is meticulous and reliant on empirical fact, which blinds him to things outside of his control. Ironically this is what led to his downfall in the original books.

@@islandmaster5064 Truth boe told, what Thrawn said is very true. We have the audience have the same question, though Thrawn seems to question not how, but why and he quickly she woun't admit, not to even to herself. Considering she has people to go back to, even though Clan Wren is dead, yet her determination to find Ezra seems to be more than just pure Mandalorian responsiblity. She's in love with the guy, yet is too afraid to admit, even to herself. Yes Ezra said or I theorize claim he saw her as a "sister", yet not even Sabine seems convinced that could true, if you watch Rebels, Ezra was been eying her from day 1, it's just now she' startintg to feel the way for him. That's the only explananation that seems to make the most sense if you look closey at the show. It's a like a painting with a meaning and message hidden deep within it, only discovering it's true meaning when examined and analyzed. Ahsoka as a show is no different, even the ending where Ahsoka tells Sabine that "it's time to move" almost as if we're supposed to be told that a romance is not on the table, yet if you look closer when Sabine looks at the sky where she starts to sense the Ghost of Anakin Skywalker, we hear a subtle musical reference to John Williams’ “Across the Stars,” the love theme for Anakin and Padme’ followed by her own theme (look up Epilogue Part I - Kevin Kiner, then listen to the part 2:34-2:39, then you hear it), meaning that Sabine's relationship with Ezra Bridger going forward could imply to eventaully become romantic. We don't why it was put there, but I did a little digging to make sense of her motivatations.

This is what makes Thrawn such an amazing villain. Any other "bad guy" just kills or tries to kill Sabine right there. But Thrawn, hes looking to kill 3 birds with 1 stone, already forseeing the trouble 2 steps ahead. If he kills Sabine, Ezra will sense it and make himself a problem. He also knows Baylon and his apprentice are a liability as much as they are an asset. So, keep your promise to Sabine, let her hunt down Bridger for you before he can be a problem. Then have Baylon go hunt down Sabine and Ezra, either all killing each other or delaying each other to be left behind. And once Ahsoka knows her friends are dead, she will be off balance and easier to kill. 3 birds, one stone with this act.

I also think, he intends to use her as a scapegoat for the galaxy to blame for his return. If anything, it is an easy, yet perfectly timed opportunity that he could easily exploit. Knowing Sabine could be a well respected war hero, it’s the perfect opportunity to divide the Republic by using this well respected hero being looked as a traitor. Considering Senator Xiano’s antagonism to Hera, Sabine’s a actions could also effect her if Senator Xiano we’re get suspicious of Thrawn came back and would investigate this to salvage his political reputation, needless to say, it is very likely he will. If Sabine ends up being looked as a traitor, especially in the eyes of the people of Lothal, it could cause a massive crack in trust with the Ghost Crew as well cause division in the New Republic. No doubt, this would the opportunity Thrawn needs to win, by weakening the spirit and morale of his enemy, making reclaiming what’s left of the Empire even more easier.

No doubt, Xiano would be a little curious about the whole situation, wondering how Thrawn came back and no doubt want to investigate this, while trying to regain his political credibility and no doubt if he finds out that it was Sabine that was responsible, he could use as a way to smear and Hera and the Ghost Crew, due to Sabine’s actions basically being high treason. Instead of the crazy dark Jedi from the old Thrawn trilogy, Ben Solo would have helped Thrawn conquer the galaxy. No Rey, no Finn and no Poe. No First Order and no General Hux and no Snoke and definitely no Palpatine. Instead, just Luke, Han and Leia against Thrawn and Kylo Ren. In the new canon you could have simply said that the Chiss could have been around 150 years old and Thrawn could also have been played by Lars Mikkelsen.

Some people seem to think Thrawn is stupid in this series. How he let's Sabine go, as if his honoring of Baylan's deal with Sabine trumps the strategic soundness of something like keeping Sabine a prisoner. But no, Thrawn is MUCH more intelligent than it seem, and this decision to honor Baylan's agreement with Sabine proofs it.
Thrawn has stated that he knows Rebels, and knows how they have friends always rushing to the rescue. Thrawn's main and most important objective is to load up the Chimera with the sarcophaguses (Sarcophagi?) and return to the Star Wars galaxy. If he keeps Sabine locked in a cell, guess what might happen? Whoever is looking for Sabine, whoever might come to rescue her, will go straight for where Thrawn is, and delay if not entirely thwart his efforts in escaping from Peridea. The decision to send Sabine away to look for Ezra is not ONLY honorable and respectful towards his enemies, it's a tactically ingenious decision as well, as it GUARANTEES that if Sabine gets backup, they WILL go to HER position, and if she is FAR away from Thrawn, that buys Thrawn time. Which is exactly what he needs.

It's because they are in a galaxy far far away. Hence that hyperspace ring needed seven SSD drives. Star Wars hyperdrive tech is interstellar, not intergalactic.
A Star destroyer has enough supplies to last two years. If the galaxy that he's in is beyond that reach then it means he's stuck there.
