Gilding is a decorative technique which consists of applying a very thin sheet of gold or other metal leaf to a surface. I thought that because we were starting a new series on designs of a long-lost era - Flemish, Edwardian & Victorian - it would be a great time to share how to apply gold leaf to surfaces - namely urns & vases.
Gliding can be applied to most surfaces and it's not difficult, just a bit fiddly and time consuming but the end results give any object a lush opulence. My thoughts are that because it was such a rich opulent time, then the container should reflect this time.
    Things to gather:
    - Container or surface to be dusted or highlighted with gold, silver, or bronze leaf
    - Gold, silver, bronze leaf
    - You will need gold leaf size - this is a special almost tacky glue that has been developed specifically to aid the leaf adhering to the surface being gilded.
    - Bristle brushes
The secret to success is to ensure that the surface being gilded is clean!

Thank you for teaching us how to apply gold leaf! I have always wanted to try it and now I feel confident I can. The urn looks beautiful where you applied the gold leaf!

Hello Converse - gold leafing is a messy business or should I say ONE NEEDS TO BE NEAT TIDY & PATIENT. I far prefer gold waxes but the gold is never as vibrant. My tip - go slow and the end result is magnificent. Warm regards Astar

Love it! Oh... this is going to be so much fun! I've always wanted to try leafing. I think this summer will be the time. I'm so excited for your up-date to the Flemish Fruit and Flower Arrangement - one of my favorites of yours, Astar!

Thank you for this video. I'm looking forward to seeing your video on gold wax. I never heard of gold wax before, so I'm very curious 🤔

Hi Lizard, all I can say about gold leaf is that I use it for high days and special days - or the project screams for it. It's fiddly diddly and my hands, are not built for applied gentleness! However, gold wax is right up alley. Slap it on followed by a quick buff and the jobs done. Perfect for a girl in a hurry. Very warm regards Astar

It really is so fun, and not at all expensive! However... you're so right, so Fiddly! There's nothing like this finish, but the gold (or other metallic) waxes are just so easy and quick - that said, I still have a few packets of metallic leaf somewhere just waiting for the perfect project as well :)

Hi Justin, after saying 'that is the end for life'!!! My eyes fell on a birds nest which had me think - why not put the nest onto a gold leafed dish??? So that will be tomorrow's job. AND that will be the last gilding EVER. Warm regards Astar

@@AstarsPlace I don't believe you :) I'm sure we all have more Gilding in our futures - some way some how xoxo (or at least I have to use up the three packets of the stuff I have on Something!).

Hi there Astar, I'm about to start a project using gold leaf but what I've noticed in every tutorial are the lines or seams between the sheets when theyr'e laid down. Is there a way to blend the squares together so the seams are invisible?

Hi there, well it's a bit of a bother trying to achieve such such a task tbh. However, what I do is very carefully do little patch up layering to try and cover over the unsightly gaps or spaces. Honestly, gold leafing is like working with butterfly wings. It's fiddly but the end result is amazing. Good luck and enjoy, Astar

Hi was thinking of covering my kitchen benches with bronze leaf and finishing with varnish? Good or bad idea?

Hi Berni, I'm having a heart in mouth moment! If sealed properly all might be well but first I'd do a test. Secondly, I'm equally not sure what to suggest to seal it with. I'll do a bit of research and see what discover. Surely the 'all knowing Google' will have an idea. Warm regards Astar

@@AstarsPlace thanks for replying 💛 I seen it done on an interior design programme on a bar and it was sealed with epoxy resin - I’ll def do a patch test first though x

Hi Jesse, many a frock has been ruined, but not through crafting - we blame the garden for those incidents. Kind regards Astar
