    I want to thank you for all your excellent detailed steps for the gold leafing. I’ve watched several videos and not one of them gave the drying time for the different stages. Thank you so much for making this video tutorial. I never would have thought of using Mod Podge as an adhesive for gold leaf, because I didn't think it was sticky or tacky enough, but this piece you did here turned out beautifully. And the Mod Podge is so much cheaper than the Speedball adhesive. This was very helpful. Love from Amanda Jones in Australia

    Your video was extremely informative. I'm hand making a wooden box for my an engagement ring, and I want to apply some gilding techniques to it. I think that the speedball adhesive will probably suit my needs the most, and I really love how well it appears to apply. I may even use painters tape to mask off sections of the box to ensure glue only makes it onto areas I want.

    This is a really good video. I have a few questions if you don’t mind.
    1) should the brush that is taking off the extra be a certain stiffness?
    2) I am working with an epoxy table…I was wondering if you know if I should still put the poly coating on it?

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  Рік тому

      Hi Amy! Great questions! I like to use brushes that course but not too dense. Fan brushes are great or small chip brushes. You need it soft enough to not scratch the leaf but course enough to pull it up and away.
      If you're laying the gold leaf into the epoxy, then you wouldn't need to seal it with poly top coat since the epoxy would technically be over it. The poly or any other top coat is just for added protection and to fully seal it onto a surface. All the gold leafing I see in Epoxy looks so pretty! I'm sure your project will turn out AMAZING! Thanks for watching ❤️

    Thank you for the video. I am trying to use Foil flakes in a frame that I am going to paint in white. I am new with this, so I am kind of lost. I wanted to asked you if there is a glue pen you can use in wood that foil flakes will attach to? I just want to do small details and my second question is if you can put the link of the top coat you used. I mean where to buy it. I will really appreciate your answer. Very good video.

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  Рік тому

      Thank you so much for watching! To answer your questions, you should be able to use a glue pen without any problems. Aleenes tacky glue and scotch scrapbook pens work great. Just keep the same principle with acquiring the "tacky" texture so your flakes can stick on properly. Let it dry and swipe off anything that didn't stick before applying your top coat. Home Depot sells Behr products. So that's where I get the furniture wax. However, if you don't have a Home Depot close by, you can purchase any clear furniture top coat wax on Amazon and it'll work the same! Jolie's is a great brand and I believe country chic products are on Amazon as well! Another great brand 😊 Since it's your first time, try to have fun with it!! If your flakes get a little too saturated, just let it dry and you'll see the gold come through. Also, if you have a little extra, I like to test out on another scrap surface before going into the actual project. You'll do great!

    How about using the modge podge on a coloring book page ? How long would u leave the gold leaf sheet,I have flakes,on the page before removing? I got my gold flakes at the thrift store and wanted to give it a go on something simple,but I never used this before,any ideas ? Love 💕 your video

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  Рік тому +1

      Hi Emily! I've honestly never tried on a coloring book page or construction paper before. But if I were to give it a go, I'd use the same principle. Wait until tacky, lay gold leaf down and let dry. I'd use a softer brush to swipe off what didn't stick because paper can be more vulnerable than wood or other hard surfaces. And I'd lightly spray with a top coat or just immediately frame it. The best way to learn is trial and error lol! But hopefully you don't have too much error. I'd lay the mod podge on a test paper first to see how it lays down and how fast it dries so you can have in mind the time frame you're working with. If it dries out I just usually put more over what I've already layed down and wait for the tackiness to set in. Try not to stress too much and just have fun with it! ❤️ Thanks for your question and watching the video! Have a great day!

      Hi there, If it's the spray lustre, I'm not 100% sure how that would work for applying the gold leaf. Sealing it with a spray mod podge is what I've tried in the past and can confirm it works. I'd test a small area out with the product and see how it works. In theory, it should. Spray, wait for it to get tacky and then lay the gold leaf on. Hope this helps!

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  7 місяців тому

      @@user-cq2jk8hv2p oh ok! So if it's the glue, then yes you're right on track! You can hold or tape your stencil in place, apply the mod podge, (it can dry pretty fast depending on how much you put on) wait for the tacky texture and then you can apply the gold leaf. If it's a big stencil I'd use a foam wedge or circle to get the mod podge on quick and even. Smaller stencils, a brush should work just fine.
      Any touch ups, you can put the stencil back over and fill in the blanks. The gold leaf will blend and it'll look great! I hope this helps! Have fun with it 😁 Thank you for watching my videos ❤ Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm here to help!

    can you still use the gold leaf if you already put a clear coat on? I decided after I painted the piece that I wanted gold leaf. They are all Dixie Belle chalk paint products. Hope to see an answer, very informative video- thank you

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  Рік тому +1

      Hi Renee! Thank you for reaching out!
      If it were my piece, I would use a very fine sand paper to lightly open the surface up where I want my gold leaf. Nothing too corse to where you would see the scuffs, just something to give myself a new base. And you'll need to apply another top coat over the gold leaf once you're done. So, if you used wax or polyurethane, you'll want to use the same product again as a top coat. Hope that helps! ❤ Have fun with it!! 🙌

    Hi Heather, I just tried the Modpodge on masonite, but couldn't determine how 'tacky' it should be. The masonite seemed to absorb the Modpodge very quickly, so I applied a second layer, but it dried very quickly and seemed to not get tacky. This was done in a 70 degree garage. Any tips?

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Robert! Temperature can play a role for sure. Mod podge tends to dry out pretty quick when it's in a thin layer. I'd make sure to lay it on as thin and even as possible and you'll apply it when it's almost translucent. Leave the gold leaf on until the rest of the mod podge dries and then go in and knock it back or wipe it. Hope this helps!

      @@roshnibarik386 I may not have been so clear in my video, I apologize Roshni 😞 the antiqing wax is ment to go over the clear wax and then be wiped off. So it turns the gold leaf amber. Ontop of crystals, the metallic would most likely cover up your gold leaf.
      Your jewelry sounds so pretty! 😍 Have you thought about resin? I have some friends that use that product over gold leaf with their smaller projects. Maybe a thin layer? I can look into other products too 😊

      I would recommend matching whatever base you're using as an adhesive. So if you are using a water-based adhesive match with water-based sealant. • @Happyspacediys

      I've herd similar results as well. I've kept all of my gold leafing projects and haven't noticed any tarnish over the years. And they are all sealed differently. I disagree with the outlook of the mod podge vs gr8 leaf paste...According to the video ..irs the way you placed the gold leaf onto the mod podge that gave it more of a crinkle look. If you look at the video you had folds in the original gold leaf as you placed it down on the mod podge,which help create more crinkle to begin with.
    Just my observation.

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  3 роки тому

      So sorry, not understanding fully what you mean with mod podge and the crinkle.. That was the issue at hand and why it was different was the placement. Because the other product was so runny I couldn't do the crinkle to match how I applied the mod podge with the first application on the front. So second try on the sides, I had to learn to match the mod podge to how the other product applied. So yes, if that's what you're pointing out, I'm right on board with ya! That's exactly the point of the video! Thank you for watching 😊💕💕

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! It's been my experience that gold leaf can be added to pretty much any surface. You just have to get the prep and adhesive right. Just to save any problems, I'd also use a spray sealant/ topcoat. Mdf has a special way of not accepting many layers. So the spray at the end vs a painted on top coat would be better. Make sure to let it fully dry and you'll be golden! 😊

    I am assuming that you used this cabinet and the color, just to demonstrate your style of gold leafing. Aesthetically, gold leaf is inappropriate for this style of American furniture as well as the base color. IMHO, gold leafing should be done on a different base color and there are always lines and crackling to the leaf, and they are expected and desired. But hey if you like it, then definitely do it.
    You presented well, with clarity in your voice, and spoke at a pace, which allowed me to follow your method.
    So many young people who produce and star in these videos which are more DIYs do not realize that one’s hearing does degrade, and the ability to take in the words and comprehend a faster pace speaker, also slows down. And although I have done all sorts of leafing and years before products such as Mod Podge, arrived in stores. I’m fact there’s were no stores for hobbyists, crafters and other artisans!! Thanks so much 👍💕

    • @Happyspacediys
      @Happyspacediys  Рік тому

      It's a general rule to match water based products. Oil can cause some separation as it dries. It also can change the color of your gl to a more amber/aged hue. I've herd you can combine water based products with oil top coat after a 24/48 hr duration. I try to give the best advice for least problems and back tracks. That's why I suggest it. If you feel good about it, go for it. The video is a general guide.
