I asked my Chinese mom about this and she says yeah it was really that hard, and that it legitimately affects your entire life. She didn’t get that good of a score on it and because of that she didn’t get into a good college and that changed the rest of her life... She always says students are really lucky in America, because we can retake the SAT/ACT as many times as we need to while they only got one chance...
Ruimin Cui you have to be in grade 12 to take gao kao. Which means you literally have to fail to retake. So it’s not the same as oh I have time next year I’ll retake the exam. No
you mother must be mistaken. Everyone had more than one chance to take that exam, even if you in the general college, you still able to improve yourself to top university by taking other exam. So, the chance are over there, but journey was quite hard tho. But, I don't think American student could go to university that easy, especially when they are come from the poor household and public school, the resource was quite limited, plus the tuition fee was quite high in USA, many student will take student loan and pay it for years.
We literally talked about that today in class. A Chinese student with me said that you can retake the test but they have that test once a year. But she said that the test costs so much and not many students afford to retake it. May god be with all of the students who's taking that exam and I hope the system improves.
Before some of you get stressed out about these questions, there are tips to kill all kinds of hard tests like these ones. Look for key words in multiple choices and essay prompt questions are meant to see HOW you see and think of the question in a creative way. Let me give you examples: 1:58 Notice that materialism = "people's lives". 2 and 3 are wrong because they talk about thinking and not concrete materials 2:41 Asking "Do butterfly wings have colors?" is like asking you *Do you believe in ABSOLUTE OR SUBJECTIVE reality in colours and why do you strongly believe in that reality? Use famous literary and philosphical texts to support your points* 2:59 Think of this: Biotechnology researcher = philosphical and abstract learner, Engineering technician = Hands-on learner, Photographer = visual learner. Another way to ask this question is this: *Which of the three types learning styles do you believe that can lead to a successful life: Abstract, Hands-On, or Visual learning. Use famous historical, political, and economical events to illustrate your points. And also, what defines success from the ACCEPTED CHINESE SOCIETIAL viewpoint? You may also use famous Chinese literary and philosophical texts to back up your points* 3:50 This is somewhat like asking *Have you heard of the idiom "Square Peg in a Round Hole?". Define what that idiom means while also using the SYMBOLISM of milk, mineral water, and wine bottles and the shapes round and square in representing everyday lives* This is a creative thinking question Have I at least cleared some things up a bit? On the other hand, I do have sympathy for those Mainland Chinese teens who *need to have at least that level of thinking in their young age* to get into prestigous Chinese universities like Tsinghua and Peking University.
@@debmalyachatterjee22 No, when I first saw this test, the things that I just said already came to me in the first place. I never actually have taken the test before
@N .M Yeah obviously, this is like saying many world elites claim that *colleges and universities are not teaching people the right ways* to be successful in life
The butterfly question is a neat one . All butteflies have colour pigments except from the blue color on most of the butterflies . The blue pigment is so hard to produce that butterflies have developed structures on their wings that bounce the light in a way that only the blue spectrum of light bounces . You can tell this is true because if you see the wing from a different perspective the color will change .
yeah I saw a youtube video on that, explaining why is blue such a rare colour in the animal kingdom. However I highly doubt anyone short of an expert could write a full essay on that
I went to a physics lecture about the color blue and the professor was saying that blue doesn’t exist in nature and it’s really just a trick of the light. I was thinking of that while watching this and your comment makes me feel like it really is true.
@@AlexandrBorschchev Well to be fair, it's quite hard to get into Yale - and he did, so... genius is subjective, but he's definitely academically clever!
The round and square question is an old Chinese philosophy question: People needs to be round on the outside and keep it square inside. It means when we are parts of the society and dealing relationships with others, don't be stubborn and we should learn to compromise, cooperate -- like a round. However, when it comes to people's inner minds, it's important to keep something square -- i.e. stick with dreams, moral standard etc. I think most of the Chinese are aware of this question, so actually, it's not that hard. Besides this essay can be written in any other aspects as long as the writer can persuade the graders. Gaokao is absolutely strict and hard, which needs to be improved in many ways. However, the American way is not perfect as well, especially considering the poor quality of American primary education among the world. Both countries need to learn from each other. And my point is just showing off that I got through this horrible exam and got the chance to learn worldwide :)
dang it. I was thinking that the philosophy of round and square has to do with maturity and the effects of growing up. Babies drink milk, milk comes in square cartons, therefore, life is more clear cut: squares are 90 degrees on a corners, 4 equal sides, etc. As we grow, we drink more water than milk. Life starts to get complicated just like circles aren't as clear. Once we get to adulthood (when we're able to drink), our lives are so complicated that we yearn to put them together back to squares.
at least some of these essay questions rely on students natural intelligence and creativity rather than in the uk and america where most exams just require you to memorise entire textbooks
thatasiangirl 0_0 i know and i would obviously never want to sit their exam but i mean i wish more western exams allowed room for interpretation and creativity
The point of the tests is to give everyone an equal opportunity in a country with drastic wealth inequalities. If you add too much emphasis on things like extra curricular or recommendations, it’s easy for rich kids to get ahead since they can afford fancy extracurriculars and famous connections. This system isn’t perfect, but it is the most egalitarian method.
Here's one: Water is one of the essential needs of a human being, in that case we need water whenever and wherever we go. It is contained in a circular or cylindrical container because that shape is easier to store and is more portable, with it not having corners. It can also cause less damage to whatever you put it in, in example your bag. It wouldn't cause tears becuase it doesnt have any sharp edges. Milk on the other hand is not as important of an essential as water. We often store it in the refrigerator. Cylindrical containers are narrow and with that, length is compromised. The more water it needs to contain, the longer it needs to be since its narrow, which is not ideal in storing inside the refrigerator. Now square containers tend to be wider but shorter, which would be the preferrable shape in refrigerator storage. Finally, circular containers tend to look more sophisticated than box containers thus using it for wines. It is then contained in a box container for protection. Having sharp edges would give more strength and stability compared to the circular ones thus providing additional protection to the cylindrical/circular containers of wine.
Hmm... Actually... square containers can store more for the same space because they can be piled up without lost of space. With round containers you are bound to always have some kind of holes in between that isn‘t used effectively. But great essay
I "survived" Gaokao 5 years ago, as much as I hate the tests, I still found some of the facts in the video extremely shocking... Drones and 7 years in Prison???... Out of curiosity I looked up the punishment for cheating in Gaokao and find a news title stating "Up to 7 years in Prison for cheating in Gaokao" (click baits?). Then I read the whole article realizing that specific case involved a group of people who provide cheating devices and bribery...overall much more complicated than simply "cheating and go to jail"... ( I also found that common punishment for cheating in Gaokao is banning the person from taking GaoKao for up to 3 years.) It's easy to go overboard while depicting a foreign system... And bad news travels fast... I'm by no means a fan of Gaokao, but I just want to clarify some facts and hope it doesn't add to the stereotypical westerner's "China" image.
Thank you for saying this. I knew something was off with that 7 year thing. americans love to spread a fake image or facts about other people/countries/races but their own. very annoying
Yeah well it’s western media what do you expect. China=communist dystopia. Capitalist=rainbows and butterflies and everyone hugging each other on the street. Why people still lap it up is beyond me.
I am Chinese, and let me just tell you that as an 25 year old adult, in occasions I still get nightmares about the stress and critiques I had 8 years ago when I was in high school.
China has a massive population and they need to narrow down the few best. Of course their education system and exams are hard. It's the same in India. People in these countries study really hard. There's a reason for the "smart", "nerd" stereotypes.
I’m sorry but chinese people arent intelligent. I live in china and their intelligence are all school based. When it comes to having actual deep conversations and critical thinking, they lack it severely. They’re brainwashed a lot of the time. They’re intelligent in a sort of encyclopaedic type of way, but they aren’t raised to think outside the box or have deep critical thinking
Wolfferoni You do realize that this test holds a lot more weight than most tests admitted in the US? If your cheating to go to a better class, that's fine. If you cheat so that you could get a bigger salary, that isn't fine
We have it in my country as well (Morocco) and its the same stuff, an exam that decides your life passed by highschool seniors and if caught cheating unlike chine we have a 2 year sentence in jail
How did religion even come into this, and no, that isn't how it goes in Muslim countries. I have family in Bangladesh, and lived there until grade 2 and no one is getting beheaded. What're you talking about?
The "square and round/circle" (fang-yuan) is a common term implying the outcomes of rules and disciplines from a socio-political perspective, or it can also represent the heaven and the earth from a historical and spiritual perspective. If you are familiar with Chinese culture and philosophy, there are actually a lot to write on that particular question. I think the translator did a decent job in translating the questions, because I can figure out what the original questions in Chinese were. However, inevitably, a lot of cultural references are lost among translation so the questions don't really make sense to the American audiences. The questions are hard though, they like to trick you and set a lot of traps for failures.
I would just have gone for my knowledge in legends and mythology were circles often represent eternity or unlimited potential while the Square has the limits of it's four walls. But I'm from sweden and has nearly no knowledge of chinese philosophy other than they have pondered questions for over a thousend year so I imagine that there are several answers depending on whose philosophy you want to use. Most of these question doesn't seem to have an correct answer since they come from philosophy and the base of philosophy is that there is no established answer.
Senefer that's what my mother also told me^ she's chinese and she always refers to the circle/ square philosophy and applies them to different areas of life for ex. It's better to be a circle because circles are continuous and they flow and have no edges and clash with no one whereas squares has ridged edges and its 4 edges limits a person and you will clash with other squares... Its a universal philosophy that all cultures developed and understand
That's interesting. I didn't know that the chinese philosophy was similar though when you ponder about it there seems to be some similarities among most cultures. For example, the home of the divine is almost always the sky, We like to build architecture that mirrors the Mountains (pyramid like Buildings), snakes are very often depicted as evil or at least chaotic in some form and goddesses are often connected to fertility and birth in some way. Trees seem to be sacred in most religions like Hinduism, Chinese, Ancient egypt, Jewish and our own vikings with their Yggdrasil and so on.
Senefer most religions roots stem from the study of nature and the physical world which the person can observe except might be the abrahamic religions like Christianity or Islam but earlier pagan or current non abrahamic religions roots are still present in the study or the reverence of nature so that's why most religions had a deity like mother earth or the fire God or God of thunder but the abrahamic religions believe in the concept of 1 God I think.
This is actually the most interesting comment section i have read in awhile , its so amazing to see how different cultures and societies interpret common shapes and items differently.
Tests from around the world: "Who is the first man to step on the moon?" Gaokao: "If Neil Armstrong is the first man to step on the moon, find the probability of you stepping on the moon."
Total no of people gone to space are only 565 and the probability of becoming a astronaut is about 1 in 600-800 So probability of you becoming an astronaut then going to space is close to 4% or 1 in 400 astronaut. 😀
I think the 'philosophy of round and square' question is actually very interesting. I'd conclude round items are considered made so for ergonomics or as a sign of luxury, versus more practical square items which exist solely for utility.
That's exactly what I thought. The round is used to show high class, smooth lines, ergonomics are involved etc. The square is utility, requires less skill. The round bottle of wine is a sign of luxury, but placed in a square box in order to convey how it is a drink of the people, which has been enjoyed for thousands of years.
If you go through any Asian entrance exams, the question pattern are all the same (may be almost same). It's not something so crazy. But what is crazy that every year, each students dedicate their entire life in qualifying such exams, as if that is what they are programmed to do. It's more like a rat race, you don't know who are you're racing or competing against. You're just born and told to race. I just don't like the fact that the entire future of a student depends on this piece of papers.
I am a Chinese student, you are right, we also hate this system, including our teachers. But we have to use this system in the face of such a large population. This system is cruel to students, but that's the reality
As a materials engineer in training, I appreciate the symmetric ergonomic beauty of a cylinder but also like the sturdiness and utility of the box. Wine, being often a gift item, thus has a combination of these forms: the delicate organic curve of the glass bottle encased in strong protection, truly matching the value of the item.
Why can an essay not include questions that require a basic understanding of physics? It shows how you can connect two topics. Or several in this case, including history, how bottles are made, why good wine can not be stored in a plastic container etc. I believe I'd have the time of my life with these questions as they ask you to think instead of asking exactly what you might have learnt by heart.
what a missleading video...u can say what ever you want but at least tell a whole and true story. even the essay question is incomplete. the question is from gaokao of jiangsu province essay writing. the original story is something like this:during a research students find that under the electron microscope, the colorful butterfly wings are no longer colorful but with numerous microstructure and uneven surfaces. you can write an essay about this from your understanding.
Who do you admire the most? A biotechnology researcher, a welding engineering technician or a photographer? Answer: Biotechnology Researcher Why? Because it's the only one my Asian parents will approve of. Evidence? Statistics show that this job earns the most cash.
Yoshikuni Michiyo hmm believe or not, all the English fancy words are like the elementary school level vocab in Chinese. So instead of trying to add high level vocabs, u might wanna focus on the number of the words
Assumed that it was a trick question. All of them is the correct one. All professions deserve admiration and respect . Not to mention that they are all most likely older since they have studied and asian culture pretty much demand respect for elders so... Which is why most people probably got that one wrong since they most likely chose one person
I went to high school in China and I was trained for about three years to prepare for this exam. In my last year of high school I said “f**k it I’m not gonna bet my whole life on this” and I took SAT, got admitted by PSU. But still I took Gaokao after SAT because I just don’t want to waste my three years training. Eventually I ranked ~3500 out of more than 400,000 participants. This is a unforgettable experience in my whole life.
China is such a large country so it is not possible for exams there to be easy. They need to narrow down the best of the best from over a billion people, so of course the exams have to be extremely hard. If exams in China were as easy as exams in the USA, most people would do well so therefore there is no point.
But it's so stressful for students I'm half Chinese and I have Chinese friends and all they do is study even in summer and they sleep for only 5 hours and the rest of the time they are studying it makes them mentally and physically exhausted
not only that. asian countries have more philosophical questions on exams because of the values their country sets forward but the united states values practicality over anything. the questions are straightforward because of this. our college entrance relies on long term gpa and college essays showing the work ethic and character of a student, which is much more practical than an exam that sees no more into a person than their number.
The square and circle question was a mistranslation though, it is missing half of the question, and it is mainly a discussion about a taoist philosophy. Here is the entire text, "装鲜牛奶的容器一般是方盒子,装矿泉水的容器一般是圆瓶子,装酒的圆瓶子又一般放在方盒子里,方圆之间,各得其妙,古诗云:方圆虽异器,功用信具呈。人生也是如此,所谓:上善若水任方圆。以方圆为话题,根据此材料,题目自拟写作文。"
I think your wrong. Circle usage pertains to the most amount of volumn you can get in a particular shape. The square is the least amount of product needed to protect a circle without massive amounts of waste. Look it up.
@@notblondeswede but when using multiple amounts of packaging that holds a circle. Square alllows for the most volumn for the circle. A hexigon cannot be used for packaging purposes. Square and circles maintains the best combinations for volumn and waste. Why soda bottles and most consumer bottles are circle and square
That Jinping question is jusy a typical Gmat critical reasoning section question. But, it's fucked up if this exam is so important that people have their whole life dependent on it.
The education resources, especially the higher education resources that are both superior in quality and reputation (the top universities), are pretty limited when it comes to nearly 10 million students every year competing for those spots. So until there's a better solution, China will have to stick with this system that's pretty fucked up.
The questions in themselves are pretty interesting, yeah. Having these extremely obtuse philosophical questions as part of a standardised test that will determine your whole life is terrifying though.
The questions trigger you to use critical thinking skills and use your creativity. This skills are important in the real world whether you are an engineer solving a problem or a business owner trying to come up with an innovative product and how it will help your company succeed and satisfy the stock holders. My thoughts? Questions? Every country needs to implement them to develop the skills I mentioned. Exams? Too much stress for teens to carry and terrifying to know that it defines your life.
These tests are more than what you see. Part culture, part history, part humanity, part politics. The world is an unfair place, and on this one test you have the opportunity to prove yourself. Even though it may not be completely fair. The content of the exam might never even apply to your future job. This exam exists not to test your mathematical ability or memorization skills, rather its there to provide ample stability and competition for the nation. It makes everyone think that they have a chance, no matter how slims the chances are. It weeds out those who will crack under the pressure. This exam ultimately tests discipline, to apply what you have prepared, to be able to think collectively even under tremendous pressure. Those who come out on top will not doubt lead the world one day. After all, the burden of leading a society is no less challenging. This exam is a way for China to pick out those who have the right psychology guide its future, and places trust in those who will not crack.
Not when there's approx. 10 million teens trying to get the best opportunities they could by this exam, and there are the cheaters who just unfairly got the advantage.
This exam is normally the only way students from poor families/towns can have a future and chance at post secondary studies so for people to unfairly get that privilege by cheating isn't fair for those that depend on this test in order to guarantee a good future. China's fair with its people if you cheat on an exam this important you deserve that punishment
Or how about not making an exam that essentially determines your entire life for you? Like they said in the video, no matter what you think, that's an asinine amount of pressure to put on ANY person. No wonder why suicide outbreaks happen after exam season. The test can make your life better or ruin in..all in the amount of time it takes for you to sit down, take out your utensils, start the exam, finish, and hand it into the test proctor (which im going to assume is about maybe 9-10 hours over the course of 3 days?)
After such LONG questions and they ask do the wings of butterfly have colours 🤔I'm like WHAT ARE BUTTERFLIES ITS THE INSECT OR A BUTTER HAVING FLIES and answering wrong may become irrelevant.🤔🤔🤔
it's an essay question, it's a part of the literary exam. You can write whatever you want as long as you can back it up. Write a short story abut a butter having flies and you can still get high points as long as it's good.
Well, The butterfly doesn't have colors if you are color blind, just plain blind or something other than a human. The butterfly doesn't Believe it has colored wings, because it cannot see the colors (I think so at least, I do not know anything about butterflies)
I'm chinese and the question in the video is not the whole part of it. i think the original questions is like under the electronic microscope the butterfly wings have no color but in child's eyes it is colorful. students can write an essay about the relationship between science disillusion and children's imagination or something. the question in the video is absurd.
I'm a grade 3 of senior high school from China, I will take the Gaokao(college entrance examination) this year. My examination performance is poor in usual, but I will try my best to face it.
we have to study eight subject(math,Chinese,English, geography, political, physical, history, biology),and I am only high school ,thepressure was huge And after having the test ,everyone of us will know the rank of everyone ,and also we only have less then thirty minutes to play ,its stressful ,and boring ofcourese
Anna M No comments in this comment I’ll leave a comment for comments that has no reason to comment You see I have said too much the word “Comment” Now it’s again.
+arseniy12304/IIworldieII & More! (ArseniyTheGamer) you're suggesting that a comment is sentient enough to leave a comment of its own? Sounds like another question that fits well in the Chinese gaokao philosophy essay prompt
Am i the only one who legit finds this interesting... like i feel like the questions are good ones. And in such a huge place like china, ofc they have to narrow down the few best
I just had the exams. I’m a Chinese student. Actually, we learned lots of things in high school , not only sth on books, but also sth in our mind. We learned what we want really ,and how to get it by ourselves . At least the time before the test, we were happy, we hard working for ourselves but not for anybody else.
Am I the only one who didn't really think it was *that* hard? Yes its hard and confusing but its not impossible like what these Buzzfeed people made it out to be. The MCQ one you can ignore everything else except 'best way', 'trace back to the people's daily lives' and 'materialistic point of view', so 1 is definitely correct. Between 2 and 4, 4 explains why tracing back is the most important so its 1 and 4. For the essay prompts, I don't know what the standard for essay writing is in China and what they learn in school so I can't really comment on that but from my point of view and knowledge, 2 and 3 is doable. Wtf is 1 though
I dont know why they pick those two questions in the video, but there are 4 subjects in the exam. They just picked 2 easiest ones. The most difficult subjects are Math, Science (physics chemistry and biology combined), and maybe English (to some students). You can go Google Chinese Gaokao Math, and you will find out how disturbingly difficult they are.
xfroz they didn’t mention the essays usually requires 500-800 characters in chinese. A topic like “do butterfly wings have colour” is a lot more difficult when you have to write 800 words not 100
@@forlornpreponderance2299 That is not an essay, the only essay required is the Chinese test which has nothing to do with butterfly's color. Also, just like SAT, the essay is more focus on your Chinese express skill not your philosophical skill. Don't judge it if you don't know it.
Kevin Pie If I may offer my answer: single/multiple-choice questions are graded by machines. And subjective questions, such as Mandarin/English essay, will be handed to selected professors from qualifying universities. All staff are bound by NDA and are required to deliver the result in a few days.
Mainly the public high school teachers and some professors from the university. They are kept in school all day, while communication methods(such as cell phone) are prohibited to bring with them, also the name of the students is covered with paper, so they have no idea who they are grading in order to show equality in the exam grading process. Also, they are not going to get paid extra cash, but probably proud shall stay with them. I don't even know what I am talking about in the half way of this.
Each country has their own education system, i do miss the days when prepared Gaokao, it was a special and treasure time, the time you spent days with your classmates studying hard together, the days your family prepare Gaokao nutrition dishes, it is an important exam, but isn't good to study hard to fight for a better future if you are from a regular family.
lol I live in China (not from china) and I've never heard of this exam. It's probably cuz I go to an international school but still they make it seem like the whole country shuts down for it when it's just another test like the SAT or ACT
Wow.. You live in China and you haven't heard about this test? Do you watch the news? Every year, Gaokao news is broadcast on television, radio when the testing period comes around. My friends started studying for Gaokao in MIDDLE SCHOOL. And my school wasn't even a top school, just average. During exam periods, it's literally different in China. People aren't allowed to honk horns near school, there are free rides for students to get to exam locations on time (if you're late by a minute, too bad, take it next year), it's literally embedded in the fabric of society. SERIOUSLY HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE HEARD OF THIS EXAM?? I seriously amazed.
It's not just China, it's the whole Asia, Middle East jncluded! And they are lucky in China the police patrols to keep it quiet. In here we have to prepare for the worst case:noisy streets, the officials supervising the exams talking and eating loudly, the person next to you having a nervous breakdown and puking all over the place, and many other bizarre situations. And the number of students they get is SOOOOOOO low and everyone wants to be a doctor! It's a freaking mental/educational hunger games here!
Their system is different, they are used to a certain, high, level of education. Just because their system is different, doesn't mean ours is better. Better is subjective.
Who do you mean by "ours"? Also, tests that have extreme levels of stress with questions that are irrelevant to real life aren't a high level of education.
If you think about it though, the essays probably aren't bad. The questions are probably meant to be very broad and the answers are probably meant to be opinion based. Its function is probably more to determine writing ability, how you organize your thoughts, and how insightful you can be about something so simple than whether or not you're actually answering the question right; there probably is no right answer, at least for the essays. I don't know if this is the case, but based on the questions that is what it seems like. I do agree that the multiple choice question was unnecessarily difficult, but I do see how it could be reasoned through.
That is exactly the case about the essays. writing ability\organizing thoughts\wording and phrasing etc. i am Chinese, i freaking took 2 times of these tests...
You are absolutely right on the essay questions. But the multiple choice question they selected is not difficult, though, because the question is about the relation of art and people's life, and 2&3 are not even related to the question.
Yeah the Gaokao may be a lot harder than what anyone in America does in high school but this is a bunch of exaggerated facts. 7 years in prison is the maximum punishment for cheating, the normal punishment is not being able to take the Gaokao for three years. A lot of these questions I assume would be known by Chinese people because the shown questions relate to their culture and news. A more fair judgement of this test would be to show math and science questions and explain the amount of time a person has per question.
My Mom is from China. She took the gaokao and actually did really well and got into the top university. But I can really seee why she moved here for us to have a better life and I'm really thankful.
I wonder if the essay questions are deliberately obtuse so that officials can just pick the students they want while still giving the appearance of a legitimate test in order to keep the masses hopes alive.
i wouldn't say it's obtuse. China's literary essay questions have always been open to interpretation because there are no requirements about what you write besides the character count. It's designed to give as much freedom to the student as possible. Maybe it seem obtuse because there are too many possibilities that some people get confused.
I assumed that it's more of a personality test. Your answer to these abstract question with no real answers will show how wide your mind is. It will shows how you can think about complex problems and how creative your answers is. It's not about knowledge. It's about how to use it to solve problems. It maybe a good why to give suggestions to what you are suited for but I'm not as sure about the pressure of this test.
They are not obtuse. The essay questions are meant to test your critical thinking skills and writing. The SAT has a writing section, do you call that ‘obtuse’? The Chinese language is extremely complicated, it is actually pretty difficult to possess the amount of knowledge of the language to answer these questions well. Furthermore the gaokao tests students on many subjects, the technical section of math and science is also much harder than the SAT and yes those questions have straight forward answers.
who ever cheating on this exam will be suspended from take this exam for 3 years. Not in the prison. Except who leaked those question and answer will take the legal responsibility for it.
An attempt at a "subtle" composition...square boxes are what these tests put students in, like the square containers that hold the milk mentioned in this question. More on milk: these questions are milking time and sanity from young people.. Maybe soften the circle of test abuse by watering it down, just a little, before the students turn to wine...that the institution puts into a neat little freaking box, ya square. Square pegs seldom fit into round holes, and round wine bottles don't belong in a box. There...water, milk, wine, square boxes and circles. Nailed it.
The difficulty and the pressures of the test is entirely the point. Yeah it sucks for the students who get destroyed by it but imagine how extraordinary the students with the highest scores must be. Even the one’s who manage to successfully cheat considering the consequences and anti cheating measures exhibit other extraordinary qualities that would correlate to future success. All education systems around the world essentially do the same thing, seperating students through grades and test scores, China just does so with at a much higher level of scrutiny. They probably have to given their massive population. How else would the top schools know who to pick? If their tests were easier you’re talking about selecting from potentially millions of students with perfect scores.
Being good at exams does not correlates to having a good academic achievement. You can stuff as much as you can in your head and not remembering anything after the exam is done. I've seen many cases of that. Education is about cultivating and helping you becoming a better person socially and intellectually. Putting stress on people to the point of them committing suicide is not the way to go for education. It just creates mindless machines who only know how to study and have no other knowledge about how the world works or have any life experiences.
I agree with you about education, but schools still need a way to decide which students to accept. And from what it sounds like, these exams don't just test knowledge. A lot of the prompts are abstract, making it almost impossible to study for. They are testing for problem solving ability and the ability to handle pressure, and these two traits do directly correlate to success.
bigheadrhino There are many other ways for us to test their capabilities. Namely what is used in Finland. The harder you push the students, the less likely that they'll study.
I think the focus on Finland is misleading though. Everyone just says it but how did we decide that? Based on how well the FInnish kids did on EXAMS. Not to mention Finland is gradually slipping into xenophobia etc. Is that intelligent? But it also proves your point that exams (particularly number grades) are crude at judging intellect. Ultimately, no exams can truly 'measure' intelligence cos we still struggle to define it. What impresses me with this Chinese exam is that it requires immense critical thinking pulling from art, philosophy, culture, history, logic and science simultaneously... EQ + IQ, if we want to be reductive.
What do they do in Finland? I'm curious. I heard that Finland ranks no. 1 in education while Korea ranks no.2 but their approaches are entirely different. My ex-Korean crush said Finnish students don't study or sth.
Shapes of the containers serve 2 main purposes: to safely and efficiently contain and transport the content. Wine is always fermenting so a cubic container is weak against the gas build-up, but the boxes are used so the bottles don't roll around during shipping. Milk boxes are cubic because they are easy to stack, also when ballooned up it's an easy indication of expiration.
Normally, each essay will be assessed by two teachers separately, and there's a rubric help to grade. The final grade will be the average of two grades they gave. but if two grades have more than 3 points, the essay will be passed to other teacher.
The art-related multiple-choice question is the easiest one. It doesn't require any specilized knowledge, just a simple test on students' comprehension ability. We call questions like this "送分题" (give-away questions) which require minimum efforts and aim to give a boost to students' morale. 2/3 of you got it wrong. Duhhh.
Essay prompt 3: wine is put in round bottles because there is an abiotic ingredient that accounts for a huge part in the drink, while it’s put in square boxes because there is a biotic ingredient that accounts for a major part of the drink as well.
They didn’t include the entire question of the essay. The essay context is when you use microscope to look into the butterfly wing, you find out that they don’t have color but different layers of protein to reflect light and result in different color. So when you write essay you can say things like ppl can adopt environment to be successful
I admire a photographer the most, just having that perspective to capture a single frame of life. Imagine how many pictures it would take to fully document every day of a single person's life.
This is actually so true, even though I'm not in college, my cousin took it. I was with in China during the summer for vacation, and he was doing the testing. I'm just lucky that I don't study in China!
Prompt: "Do butterfly wings have colors?" Such a simple question, yet so many different ways to explain it. To answer this question, I’ll be looking at all possible fields of study this question could be referring to. These fields of study include: entomology, philosophy, social studies, and reality as we know it. My entomologic explanation will include statistics on known butterfly species and the pigments that give such a color to butterflies. My philosophical explanation will include what “butterfly wings” and “color” really could mean to humans as a species and why it is important. My reality explanation will discuss what color is, how it operates, and what it brings to us. Do butterfly wings have colors in entomology? The short answer is yes. Butterflies could use their colorful wings for a variety of uses such as attracting a mate, camouflage, and a warning signal for predators. Butterflies have evolved to have certain colors on their wings through a process called natural selection. Natural selection allows for more able species to survive through the ages. The reason for this is that organisms with better suited traits for its environment also carries the genes for those traits which would most likely be passed onto subsequent generations. This allowed butterflies to evolve brightly colored wings, as brightly colored wings are better suited for survival in its environment. What could the essay prompt be referring to when they ask about “butterfly wings” and “colors”? There are numerous possibilities, but due to the fact that this essay is being timed, I will only include one indication of what “butterfly wings” and “colors” could be referring to. Butterfly wings could be referring to the quality of citizen life. Colors could be referring to the beauty that might or might not be contained in daily citizen life. So the question rephrased is: “Does daily citizen life have beauty in it?”. The answer to this question subjectively is simply in the perspective of the audience. Beauty, by definition, is something pleasing to the senses. Being anybody living a life will be nearly always guaranteed some sort of pleasing sensory stimulation at some point in their life. So the answer to the question would be that citizens life nearly always has beauty in it. The reason why this is important is simply because humans generally find beauty important naturally. The origin of the universe derives from nothing. We don’t exist, and we never existed ever. In a standard atom in the periodic table, the charge of it is always zero. This is due to the protons positive charge canceling out the neutrons negative charge. The same goes for the existence of the universe. Our universe exists, because there is an anti-universe that exists that is able to cancel out our existence and equate to nothing. This is explained and proven through quantum mechanics. I will interpret the question of the essay prompt as: “Does our reality contain anything true and real?”. The answer is no, according to the explanation above. Butterfly wings might or might not have colors. The question can be answered in many different ways. What matters is what context the question is put in, and how one might interpret the question. Such a vague question might never be able to be truly and completely answered. This is unless the question is asked and interpreted in a literal sense.
I love the abstractness of these questions. One thing to note is that the essay questions are about writing essays, not necessarily about any measure of accuracy, as long as you address the topic. Questions that evoke imagination are perfect for writing essays about. The multiple choice question seems like it would be easy if you went through it methodically, but it's quite a lot of information to keep in mind at once.
Ah, so it's kind of like the JEE Advance counterpart (An Indian entrance exam) of China. Man I can really relate to their struggle, as both of these exams have a very low passing rate, and have high stakes...the entrance exams really are a problem for students in overpopulated developing nations.
As a 15-year-old brazilian student, I think the first question was not that difficult, actually most of the questions in our national avaliation system (ENEM) are at the same difficulty level, some are even more difficult. I totally understood the essay instructions, because they don't just provide you a sentence and order you to write, there's a text behind it, and the essay prompts in Brazil are kinda like that, the only exception is that we have a standard of how to plan and write a text that the student should learn to apply in any essay prompt.
lel are you trying to show off that your country's education system is better? boi back in the soviet days you werent even allowed to be homeless that is why they had a 99 percent literacy rate.
3:57 The last writing question in the video actually need to be write like that in Chinese test: First, write your personal experiences, Then make it metaphor such as: after these experiences, I feel I shouldn't change myself in any time, in any situation. The container of the milk box is always square, just like I'm always myself. I should be me like that milk container, hold my own perspective, and just be me. (Mine just an example, students in Gao Kao did it way better than what I wrote.)

Also they don't have actual color because the butterfly reflects certain colors of lights that make it seem like that color
I asked my Chinese mom about this and she says yeah it was really that hard, and that it legitimately affects your entire life. She didn’t get that good of a score on it and because of that she didn’t get into a good college and that changed the rest of her life...
She always says students are really lucky in America, because we can retake the SAT/ACT as many times as we need to while they only got one chance...
tawnyflower678 9 ...no.I confirmed that Gaokao can be taken once a year.
But, I don't think American student could go to university that easy, especially when they are come from the poor household and public school, the resource was quite limited, plus the tuition fee was quite high in USA, many student will take student loan and pay it for years.
you can take the exam every year if you want to until you are something like 50 years old or something.
Let me give you examples:
1:58 Notice that materialism = "people's lives". 2 and 3 are wrong because they talk about thinking and not concrete materials
2:41 Asking "Do butterfly wings have colors?" is like asking you *Do you believe in ABSOLUTE OR SUBJECTIVE reality in colours and why do you strongly believe in that reality? Use famous literary and philosphical texts to support your points*
2:59 Think of this: Biotechnology researcher = philosphical and abstract learner, Engineering technician = Hands-on learner, Photographer = visual learner. You may also use famous Chinese literary and philosophical texts to back up your points*
3:50 This is somewhat like asking *Have you heard of the idiom "Square Peg in a Round Hole?". Define what that idiom means while also using the SYMBOLISM of milk, mineral water, and wine bottles and the shapes round and square in representing everyday lives* This is a creative thinking question
Have I at least cleared some things up a bit? On the other hand, I do have sympathy for those Mainland Chinese teens who *need to have at least that level of thinking in their young age* to get into prestigous Chinese universities like Tsinghua and Peking University.
You have definitely been of great help, thank you.Did you appear for gaukau test?

The butterfly question is a neat one . All butteflies have colour pigments except from the blue color on most of the butterflies . The blue pigment is so hard to produce that butterflies have developed structures on their wings that bounce the light in a way that only the blue spectrum of light bounces . You can tell this is true because if you see the wing from a different perspective the color will change .
You learn something everyday
yeah I saw a youtube video on that, explaining why is blue such a rare colour in the animal kingdom. However I highly doubt anyone short of an expert could write a full essay on that
It's Okay to be Smart.
I went to a physics lecture about the color blue and the professor was saying that blue doesn’t exist in nature and it’s really just a trick of the light. I was thinking of that while watching this and your comment makes me feel like it really is true.

In Lebanon we learned that in school during arabic class this question is not difficult at all.
And my point is just showing off that I got through this horrible exam and got the chance to learn worldwide :)
kudos to you for passing that exam. i'd probably be one of the suicidal teens tbh haha.
Yuming Deng thanks for the imsight. I would have discussed logistics.
Can you elaborate on that? How does compromise have anything to do with round bottle of mineral water?
Lyza Srey Maybe it goes with the thing that since it’s round, it doesn’t have edges and so it’s not so difficult to go with the flow

Here's one:
Water is one of the essential needs of a human being, in that case we need water whenever and wherever we go.
This is a time to shine, go go future Supply Chain managers!
Hmm... Actually... square containers can store more for the same space because they can be piled up without lost of space. With round containers you are bound to always have some kind of holes in between that isn‘t used effectively. But great essay

I got the question right but those essay questions not going to even try.
( I also found that common punishment for cheating in Gaokao is banning the person from taking GaoKao for up to 3 years.)
It's easy to go overboard while depicting a foreign system...

They’re intelligent in a sort of encyclopaedic type of way, but they aren’t raised to think outside the box or have deep critical thinking
They all focused on the drones but like, is no one questioning the 7 year prison sentence? For cheating in an exam? What the heck.
With the weight of that exam, I can see why. Heck. People will cheat for 10%, nevermind their entire life.
It is for the organizer of massive grouping cheating. Like stealing the paper before exam or having someone else taking exam for a person.
Wolfferoni You do realize that this test holds a lot more weight than most tests admitted in the US? If your cheating to go to a better class, that's fine. If you cheat so that you could get a bigger salary, that isn't fine

Tests from around the world:
"Who is the first man to step on the moon?"
Gaokao:
"If Neil Armstrong is the first man to step on the moon, find the probability of you stepping on the moon."
Total no of people gone to space are only 565 and the probability of becoming a astronaut is about 1 in 600-800
So probability of you becoming an astronaut then going to space is close to 4% or 1 in 400 astronaut.

I think the 'philosophy of round and square' question is actually very interesting. I'd conclude round items are considered made so for ergonomics or as a sign of luxury, versus more practical square items which exist solely for utility.
Suggestions no the box is rectangular for practicality and the wine bottle is spherical for luxuriousness

Everybody has their own opinion...but wait till you have to write an entire essay about it lmao

China is such a large country so it is not possible for exams there to be easy. They need to narrow down the best of the best from over a billion people, so of course the exams have to be extremely hard. If exams in China were as easy as exams in the USA, most people would do well so therefore there is no point.
Finally seeing a guy with clear mind on this, thanks dude, for explaining
Exactly
But it's so stressful for students I'm half Chinese and I have Chinese friends and all they do is study even in summer and they sleep for only 5 hours and the rest of the time they are studying it makes them mentally and physically exhausted
not only that. asian countries have more philosophical questions on exams because of the values their country sets forward but the united states values practicality over anything. the questions are straightforward because of this. our college entrance relies on long term gpa and college essays showing the work ethic and character of a student, which is much more practical than an exam that sees no more into a person than their number.
“If everyone has a college degree, then no one has a college degree.”
The square and circle question was a mistranslation though, it is missing half of the question, and it is mainly a discussion about a taoist philosophy. Here is the entire text,
"装鲜牛奶的容器一般是方盒子,装矿泉水的容器一般是圆瓶子,装酒的圆瓶子又一般放在方盒子里,方圆之间,各得其妙,古诗云:方圆虽异器,功用信具呈。人生也是如此,所谓:上善若水任方圆。以方圆为话题,根据此材料,题目自拟写作文。"
I think your wrong. Circle usage pertains to the most amount of volumn you can get in a particular shape. The square is the least amount of product needed to protect a circle without massive amounts of waste. Look it up.

It's basically like the sat but more hard core
The A..B...C reminds me of the logic portion of the LSAT...*cringes* 😬
They can also retake the exam but it only happens once a year
......why f up... huge amount of population. What other strategy can u plan on? Stop using ur country’s situation to complain about other countries.
Am I the only one who thinks these questions are great?
The questions in themselves are pretty interesting, yeah. Having these extremely obtuse philosophical questions as part of a standardised test that will determine your whole life is terrifying though.
The questions are great yeah the exam not really in my opinion its just a great price to pay jajaja
Dylan Turner questions are hella good ones. As in difficult to answer and stimulates the brain. Maybe too much though...
They are connected Chinese art, culture, philosophy, history and politics directly. And I think they are good.
Sometimes, test is insufficient. You need to place them under different circumstances and temptations to test their morality and character.
Underrated comment
A 7-year prison term for cheating on an exam? Seems juuuust a bit steep :/
The test can make your life better or ruin in..all in the amount of time it takes for you to sit down, take out your utensils, start the exam, finish, and hand it into the test proctor (which im going to assume is about maybe 9-10 hours over the course of 3 days?)
in times of china's empire, it would be beheading.
7 years of prison is a bit too much in my opinion. Should be around 2-3 years.
Honestly I could have responded to the butterfly question pretty easily, but that’s just me.
Ry 729 same. I think it's easy. Just mix facts and metaphors to make it as long as an essay. Lol 😂

@@forlornpreponderance2299 That is not an essay, the only essay required is the Chinese test which has nothing to do with butterfly's color. Also, just like SAT, the essay is more focus on your Chinese express skill not your philosophical skill. Don't judge it if you don't know it.
I wanna know who grades these exams and how much do they make lol.
Kevin Pie If I may offer my answer: single/multiple-choice questions are graded by machines. And subjective questions, such as Mandarin/English essay, will be handed to selected professors from qualifying universities. All staff are bound by NDA and are required to deliver the result in a few days.
Choice questions are graded by computer.
Others are graded mostly by public high school teachers. They earn their regular salary.

Ben you didn’t catch the keyword, “subjective”
But the multiple choice question they selected is not difficult, though, because the question is about the relation of art and people's life, and 2&3 are not even related to the question.
no there’s a specific answer for each lmao
Yeah the Gaokao may be a lot harder than what anyone in America does in high school but this is a bunch of exaggerated facts. 7 years in prison is the maximum punishment for cheating, the normal punishment is not being able to take the Gaokao for three years. A lot of these questions I assume would be known by Chinese people because the shown questions relate to their culture and news. A more fair judgement of this test would be to show math and science questions and explain the amount of time a person has per question.
But where's the creative thinking in that.
Going to prison for cheating is pretty fucked up in the first place
My Mom is from China. She took the gaokao and actually did really well and got into the top university. But I can really seee why she moved here for us to have a better life and I'm really thankful.
In my opinion, the one with multiple choice was pretty easy because of process of elemination.
I love those essay questions

Nailed it.
the only problem is.. milk isn't really used in the word "milking" when you speak chinese.. XD

"Do butterfly wings have colors?"
HOW DO I ANSWER THIS OTHER THAN THAT THEY DO?!
How many ways can you say yes?
They didn’t include the entire question of the essay. The essay context is when you use microscope to look into the butterfly wing, you find out that they don’t have color but different layers of protein to reflect light and result in different color. So when you write essay you can say things like ppl can adopt environment to be successful
The essays aren't as hard as it seems. They are designed to be broad and vague to allow for any legitimate potential point of view.
Prompt: "Do butterfly wings have colors?"
Such a simple question, yet so many different ways to explain it.
A butterfly's wings are red, orange, yellow, green, blu, and purrple. Also, pink. And grey, and brown
This is beautiful
Your essay can score really high in the exam!
I got the question right time to reward myself
I mean what do you expect for their scores...we're talking about Buzzfeed here.
Ah, so it's kind of like the JEE Advance counterpart (An Indian entrance exam) of China. Man I can really relate to their struggle, as both of these exams have a very low passing rate, and have high stakes...the entrance exams really are a problem for students in overpopulated developing nations.

I totally understood the essay instructions, because they don't just provide you a sentence and order you to write, there's a text behind it, and the essay prompts in Brazil are kinda like that, the only exception is that we have a standard of how to plan and write a text that the student should learn to apply in any essay prompt.
