Most of the Chinese high school students that are extreme natural short sleepers (4-6 hr sleep) can do very well on gaokao and get into one of the top Chinese universities
not necessarily. It's just if you are not the brightest, working hard and doing as many practice tests as possible may close the gap.
To compete with smart students who also have best tutors, working harder is the only way to go for those are not that lucky.

Seems GaoKao is fair, just like Indian IIT JEE. Compare this against elite universities of West, where children from elite background have to be just above average to be a shoo-in in top corporate jobs, with little to no standardised meritocratic comparison.

It is NOT fair. Family with more resource can hire 1:1, take after school classes and etc. Those who lack resources, cannot.
Lastly, academic score isn't everything, can it test personality, critical thinking, soft skills and etc

In China, most parents think so, their child don't but culture is King. Parents win until the child commits suicide, then the parents lose
Well their population is huge. I'm not Chinese but I can understand that providing jobs to such a huge amount of people is too difficult
It's a rat race. If you are in the top 1% of all graduates, you can still have great jobs no matter how bad the economy is.
@@Obanai_Iguro720 is right. When you live in a country with one of the largest populations in the world, finding and providing jobs for the people is one of the most difficult tasks the government and small & large companies/businesses can do. Even joining the military in China is difficult too, since the military has already enough service men in it and can't afford to recruit more due to limited budgets. My family even had this same struggle when they were growing up in China, which is why my great grand parents decided to send my parents over to the US, because it was just too competitive to find work and almost no opportunities, especially for them, since they struggle to afford school, coming from a poor rural village.
That's literally happening on a global scale. American CS students struggle to find jobs despite over 1000 applications submitted.

That’s because China has a larger population and the education principle is designed around that.
There’s just not enough space for everybody to go to university unlike Western country… Plus there won’t be enough job anyways if everybody went to university..
There’s a reason why Chinese education system is structured with stuff like high school entrance exam or once to describe in the video for college.
