  • I hope that his video helps you decide on 4Runner vs Tacoma. I wanted to make this video after I had a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro in lunar rock for about a week as a press vehicle. I've wanted to make this video for a long time, but had never spent enough time inside of a Tacoma, to truly and fairly compare it to my 4Runner. Here are my 5 things to consider when you are shopping for a Tacoma or a 4Runner.
I get this question all of the time and I divided this video into 5 separate points that I feel you really should consider.

Great Video. Agreed with everything you reviewed. One thing I would like to touch upon is towing. I had to trade my new 17 Tacoma TRD Sport because it was absolutely horrible towing my 4K pound camper. Could not maintain highway speeds without constantly downshifting/up shifting/downshifting...I couldn’t believe how terrible of a tow rig it was. I even tried placing transmission in 4 sport but at highway speeds I was nearly at 4K rpm. I was very disappointed. And I live in flat Illinois. Traded it in on a used 17 limited 4 runner, night and day difference. 4Runner pulls my trailer no problem at highway speeds. Yes it occasionally downshifts, but not nearly as much as the Tacoma did. Couldn’t be happier with my 4Runner. I hope Toyota can figure out Tacoma’s transmission programming because besides the towing, I loved the Tacoma.

I wanted a bed to put in mountain bikes, camping gear and coolers plus I tow a pop up. I did get a Double cab even though I'm a single guy. Which led me to looking into Toyota’s. I also work with vehicles, so I’ve seen that Toyota’s have truly been one of the vehicles I see with much less problems . I went back and forth between Tacoma’s and 4runners from 2000-2008 . All this time later I’ve got a 2018 Tacoma . 4runner every day!! Simply because it’s built at the legendary Tahara plant in Japan.. build quality is second to none and cannot be matched by manufacturing here in the US. I’m not frowning upon Tacos, I love them.. but the 4runner is just better in all aspects

Got my 2021 4runner 4runner trd off road premium over the weekend. So far, I really enjoyed it. Didn't do anything crazy yet cause I want to break it in first. But been driving the '04 tacoma for almost 17 and it still runs great. And yeah, it's a little cramped in back cmdue to the fact that it's an extra cab. The taco serves me well through this years and I want to get something with a little more room in the back for passengers when the time comes.

I think everyone that either bought the 4 runner or Tacoma went through that which one should I really get phase between these two. Lol I got the 4runner and my deciding factor was the back space where I can put my dogs when traveling. I thought about a camper shell for the tacoma but I needed AC for my dogs and that wouldn’t work with the camper shell. Also, I can always get a utility trailer and pull that whenever I need it than having a bed all the time.

In terms of off roading the Tacoma trd off road is unbeatable but I will say the trd controls I hardly touched the 4Lo is what I used mainly and with 4Runner you get Atrac and DAC so helpful it did just fine I went through the Rockies off road trails in stock sr5 with bfg tires 32.5 inch you’ll be fine

Vehicles assembled in Japan are very rare thing in the U.S.A...I think it does make a difference in respect to longevity. With that, I have to go 4Runner. I also like the engine and interior better. But there are several times this year when I definitely could've used a truck bed and my 4Runner wouldn't quite have enough space. I will say that I'm a little disappointed in the softness of the paint and the interior plastics used on the 5th Gens. My 4th Gen was better in regards to that.

  • @gwot

FYI the "proper" distance from the steering wheel is having your wrist rest on the top of the steering wheel. You are nowhere near that, and your arms are straight in the 4runner when you held the 3 and 9. So if you move your seat forward in the Tacoma, you can sit in the back with a lot more knee space. But Tacoma is the only option for me, manual transmission.

My new 4WD Tacoma had frame perforation corrosion at 91K miles, Toyota screwed me and didn't cover their manufacturing defect. I've continued driving it but was unable to use it for "truck things", and now the frame has completely rusted in half at 138,000 miles. I'm shopping for a 2008-ish 4Runner with little frame corrosion. I'm going to cold pressure wash the undercarriage, let it dry for a few days, then apply Fluid Film, including inside the frame, and reapply it annually.

      From Toyota website:
      4Runner - 5,000 lbs
      Tacoma - 6,400 lbs
So yes, Tacoma can tow more - but I suspect for most people the 4Runner can also handle what they are towing.

I have both current models & for my applications I say the Tacoma with a slight edge. More useful mods IMO, better MPGs (not that i care), more HP & torque with OV Tune (no tune for the 4Runner), i can throw wet surf gear or anything wet in the back of the Tacoma without worry or cleaning up (I actually use the bed). Don't get me wrong I really like the 4Runner. But I'd give the Tacoma a slight edge. Waiting for the new Tundra to see what Toyota brings to the table 🤙🏼
