Agree very annoying! My '08 Subaru Outback remote start made sense, doors locked on start, open get in, if you push the brake without key in ignition it turns off. This is just dumb.
It’s annoying... but I also didn’t know I could do that with my key till now! Been starting it with my Apple Watch. This is much better, the delay with the app is.... 1999 vintage
What I like about the 4runner over the Tacoma is the inside space. The 4runner have a larger interior and a better driving seating position and better head space compare to the Tacoma.
I prefer the truck style of the Tacoma because you can much more easily load up large or dirty cargo (mini bikes, kayaks, hay, rocks, etc…) much easier to clean with just the hose and easier to load in and out. Also if you need covered storage space you can easily find a new quality topper for the bed for less than $800. And don’t forget the Tacoma has the option of having a manual transmission 😛

Great review! I picked up my 2021 TRD Off Road Premium with KDSS last week and I’m in love with it! Only gripe is the sluggish pedal response. Saving up for that Pedal Commander and installing ASAP!
Glad I bought my 2016 Trail when I did for $35K. Prices on cars these days is getting ridiculous and only getting worse. I can imagine for a new model comparable to what I bought it's another 5 grand at minimum. Tis only going to get more expensive with the 6th gens.
Just got my Magnetic-Gray Metallic TRD Pro last Thursday. Loving it so far. It replaced a Subaru Crosstrek which was overall too lightweight for my needs. I needed more towing capability and more off road capability. Although Lunar Rock looks great, I like the way the Gray Metallic goes with the wheels. I enjoy your reviews. I added a Pedal Commander and for me it was worth the cost. Nice to have a livelier throttle response.

I would pick a 2007 4runner over the new one, 4th gen was the best year IMO, just enough electronics and there built tuff, but the new ones are tuff as well. I hope toyota sends more trucks your way! Can't wait to see that tundra
@@trailrunnah8886 It’s not garbage as the 4Runner isn’t meant to be a performance vehicle. If you want performance, buy a Highlander! The 4Runner is meant for off road and super dependable. The 4.0 excels at both.
Yeah I agree, they need to update the light headliner color, I wish they added BSM detectors in the side mirrors, and the new head unit, along with the updated dash cluster, with TPMS are awesome! But still happy with my 2018. Great review as always Jon!
Spot on Jon! The exact thoughts that I’ve been having since my wife got hers. One other thing I love that I love on the 4Runner verses the Tacoma. The seats and overall feel of the 4Runner is far superior to my Tacoma. I really can’t wait to get in mine! Keep up the excellent content! 👍🏼
yeah, sold my 18 pro, and just picked up my 21 pro for all the reasons you mentioned. even with the headlight improvement, still might upgrade those, once a 21 version is available. Must replace all interior lights, I did that the day I took it home.
Good summary Jon. I got this exact vehicle up in Canada in Lunar Rock. The headlights must be different up here... The high beams are not in the low beam projector, but they are a) the same bulb as the daytime running lights (required up here due to 9 months of winter :) and b) are halogen!!! I swapped out these for the Extreme LED Depot with daytime running light driver and now they work really well and compliment the LED low beams. Pedal Commander on its way - I can't deal with the throttle response!
Nice review. I agree with your assessment and that’s why I purchased a 2021 Venture edition. I think it’s a good combo of the different features of the other 4Runners.
Jon - awesome channel you have here. It’d be awesome for someone with your 4R experience to compare 2021 TRD Pro with the re-tuned Fox shocks to 2021 TRD Off Road with KDSS.
Great review on an awesome truck! I’ve been looking to get into a TRD Pro for a couple months now and impossible to get. Local Toyota dealer said maybe 4 enroute this August but none will be in Lunar Rock…might have to settle for a grey metallic one which is still awesome I think!
I have two friends who both lost high end 4x4's to thieves while they were running unattended, I think this new kill engine feature when door opens is great.
Another great video and good to know what to expect with these newer 4Runners from your personal experience! I have a 2006 4Runner and have been going back and forth about upgrading but hate to spend $50,000 and downgrading from my V8 to a V6. I am going to wait and see what Toyota puts out in 2023 for the 6th Gen 4Runner.
I expect the easier things ie. blind spot monitor and the cruise control to be in 2022. Toyota is weird how they do things sometimes. Carries over to Lexus too.
Thank you, Toyota, for sending Jon a vehicle to review. Thanks, Jon. I like your feedback on all the items listed. I think the remote start needs to be updated. Press unlock button for 1-2-3-Hold for 3secs - that's a lot more involved than I think should be the case. Probably should be something like: Press unlock button 1-2-3(locks), vehicle starts up with doors locked, come up to the vehicle to unlock at the door touch sensor or press unlock on the remote, enter the vehicle and proximity sensor detects you have the key and off you go - foot on brake, release the e-brake and shift to D or R.
For the price toyota wants for the 2021 4runner trd pro, they should make it at least as equally "modern" as the premium highlander or rav4. However, they knew the demand would always be there, so they decided to milk a cow till its dry on the 4runner.
Hey Jon, you are always the first to know so I have a question. Rumors are swirling from several youtube channels about a 2022 4runner refresh. I am curious what you have heard. This would be 1 year earlier than we thought. Its it possible for Toyota to have kept this secret for so long?
yes, remote start is stupid as hell. My pathfinder procedure is push close button and then hold remote start button. doors are still locked, if you push anything before pressing break pedal and start button, it shuts down....easy, simple, works. safety my ass
Awesome vid and super sexy color. So far I’ve only seen one of these beast out in the wild on the freeway and it broke my neck. One thing I hate about my 2020 TRD Off Road are the cup holders. Have almost thrown them out in accident about a million times already since they don’t sit nicely. Velcro them down and eventually with the heat it wore off. 😞
I have remote start on my '16 and have a '21 Pro on the way .... and I can count on one hand how many times I have used the remote start, but get for some it may be useful. Agree it's dumb to shut the truck off when you open the door. That is something I noticed the first time I tried it.
The remote start on my Limited has not bothered me a bit. My wife's remote start on her RX350 does the same. It only requires pushing the start button when you want to go somewhere with the car. You CAN BYPASS THE PRESSING OF THE BRAKE PEDAL with the park release switch located by the shifter. Once in gear, for safety, the car will not turn off if the brake pedal is pressed if no key is detected. So, you can steal a Toyota once the engine is running and put in gear. This is why it turns off when you open the door. It is the most likely step to take when stealing a Toyota.
The 5 dislikes about the legendary 4runner are almost no one's concern. Who cares about the dark roof or the remote starter, sound system and high beam etc buy Porsche CayenneS that comes with built in Bose sounds system.. there are other SUVs with cool sound system and gadgets but shity overall. 4runners are not supposed to be a luxury SUV..it's rugged, simple and solid AF. I drive SR5 premium and I absolutely love it, I spent 10g converted it to TRD instead of paying 20g extra to the dealership..I also have JK Rubicon 4dr..I like it but the fact that my 4runner gives me 7 seats and the reliability is unbeatable in the market, right? You compared Silverado with 4runner..that was hilarious 🤣. 5/5 to your 👍👍👍👍👍. Good video!
This. I wanted something reliable with the intentions of having it for a while. With the weather we have had so far it's been well worth the investment. Get a luxury vehicle if you want the bells and whistles.
I'm looking to get at the end of this year. Either the TRD PRO TUNDRA OR TRD PRO 4 RUNNER. Which one would your suggest. Both would be an 2019 model year.
Hey Jon great review! My 2021 4Runner Premium with LED headlights, I don’t know what to call it. A ghost line at the top of the low beam. Not sure if it’s the lenses or bulb. I don’t really see it on the high beam. Have you heard of anything like that?? Thanks
@@TRDJon All 3 with-in 2 months. It was crazy timing that I needed 3 vehicles in 2 months for my family. It was towards the end of the 2019 model year so I could have gotten 2020's but choose to go with the 2019's as I didn't want the new tech packages. I've done a couple of mods in each of the trucks and I am fairly active on the 4Runner forums.
I love my 2020 ORP. I just ordered the interior 2nd row doors, back and hatch interior cover's. The only thing I think they should change is the rear ac vents. When seats down, they block them. Should be up by top of windows in the ceiling, like the Sienna.
Personally i wish they would get rid of the adaptive cruise control, lane departure system and all that garbage. Blind spot monitoring is great but that’s it
The remote start problem is silliness. Not only does it shutoff, but no lights are on to co firm it’s running! Toyota electronics are poorly laid out. Even the radio controls. Volume is not Up and Down, it’s Left and Right! The station controls are Up and Down, but they’re backwards! Up is down and Down is up when scanning stations. In addition, the controls don’t have lights. The sunroof, traction controls, and auto headlight switches are all dark. WTF Toyota? On one hand a new design is coming. On the other hand this design hasn’t evolved. How many years have they had to make improvements? What would it cost to include LED lights inside and out? I came to Toyota from a Chevrolet Equinox that was 5 years older and $15k cheaper and it had way more electronic upgrades.
I appreciate leaving the request for likes and channel subscription to the end of the video. Typically, when youtubers open with that, I'm out. Good job on the review.
My 2021 4runner TRD Pro exhaust makes so much noise the rear seat passengers can't hear the front seat passengers when accelerating. Anyone else experienced this? Wondering if I need to get it checked out?
I love T4R but they are very lacking in modern tech. The remote start is a BS excuse. All the vehicles I've had with remote start the system starts and thats it. No audio, no functioning actions other than the seats heating and heater running.
The cruise control sucks. If your on a slight incline it’ll revs up and stops and revs up and stops until you get on flatter ground like it can’t figure out your going up hill
why does toytota only offer BLACK for interior choices on 98% of their vehicles?!?!?! Would love a TRD Pro (any vehicle) to come with the beige interior option.
Almost all push to start cars/trucks will shut off when you open the door with remote start, no? I know the Toyota Factory remote has always done that.
I think this is true on remote start with push to start. The best remote I ever had was an aftermarket on a 2008 Tacoma. It had great range and did not shut off but it was not push to start.
you be lucky to get it for 50,000 msrp ... i shopped around and got mine for nearly 70 out the door. some wanted 12k premium...the best I could find was 5.
i have the viper 1 touch installed on my limited when purchased, much quicker than this, but toyota installed it in a way where i need to unlock the vehicle first, which to me ISNT safe, because intruders can sneak in your truck, get you once your in and youre screwed, so stupid, so i had a shop actually change it and make it so the 4runner stays locked until i open the door.
That remote start is a bone head move, does not make sense, A good remote system only allows the engine to run, no accessories will operate so kids, animals, etc can't interact with the vehicle, it's an old system that needs to be re-thinking. I hope the new 4Runner stays true to a classic 4x4, one with a V6 and V8 engine option (but that will be a long shot) good review, love the walkthrough
I had it on my 2006 Impala and it did the same as your Silverado. Now have it on my Fusion, and it stays running whether you hit the break or not. I haven't tried the gear shift yet as it's the knob and I don't want to mess anything up.
Just bought a 21 blizzard limited and the remote start was a bummer for me. It just doesn’t make sense. And I did t get a “premium” feel for the sound system. My favorite feature of my 4Runner is the back window rolling down!
No compass? And the in-dash cubby on the driver's side like the FJ would be nice. For 50k it should have a blindspot monitor. Love the Lunar Rock color and the wheels.

Like at once or just not satisfied till you got a limited?
@@TRDJon All 3 with-in 2 months. It was crazy timing that I needed 3 vehicles in 2 months for my family. It was towards the end of the 2019 model year so I could have gotten 2020's but choose to go with the 2019's as I didn't want the new tech packages. I've done a couple of mods in each of the trucks and I am fairly active on the 4Runner forums.
Joseph Pickel - Can you please adopt me? I’ll bring a very nice 2018 TRD Off-Road Premium to the family 👍🏼
I love my 2020 ORP. I just ordered the interior 2nd row doors, back and hatch interior cover's.
The only thing I think they should change is the rear ac vents. When seats down, they block them. Should be up by top of windows in the ceiling, like the Sienna.
my 2007 Xterra Offroad has the exact same 2 tone intetior...2007! ..I agree one continuous colour would be better.
Personally i wish they would get rid of the adaptive cruise control, lane departure system and all that garbage. Blind spot monitoring is great but that’s it
Lunar rock color is beautiful
I'm probably fighting so people to buy one of this next week
BEST OF LUCK!
I plan to purchase a 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro but hope it has BSM and front/rear parking sonar.
Limited will have the rear parking but that’s about it
I appreciate leaving the request for likes and channel subscription to the end of the video.
Typically, when youtubers open with that, I'm out.
Good job on the review.
Great point on the sound system. Why spend the extra money on "premium" OEM sound systems when there is a world of aftermarket hi-end options?
Excellent review. Thank you for this video!
I hate that auto start stop feature on mine too. Pisses me off everytime
Yea such a lame feature
The cruise control sucks. If your on a slight incline it’ll revs up and stops and revs up and stops until you get on flatter ground like it can’t figure out your going up hill
I love this color… May be my next vehicle.
why does toytota only offer BLACK for interior choices on 98% of their vehicles?!?!?! Would love a TRD Pro (any vehicle) to come with the beige interior option.
hey Jon love the channel I just bought a 2021 trd off road venture for the high beam what led bulbs would u recommend ? thx again .
I had auxbeam in mine. Cheap $ and worked great
Saw a lunar rock taco today. Sick! Great review: tough to find dislikes about things you love. Haha.
Thanks man!
Great info bro! I always love to have one of these.
Crazy the msrp went up like 5k in 6 months
People wanted the features, now they gotta pay for them .
Love it, an awesome video Jon thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
70K????? oh wow...
Dude you’re so helpful...much thanks 🙏
Happy to help!
I have an sr5 and a limited. I can adjust my sr5 to sound much better than the limited jbl.
I do like the refreshed wheels because I saw one the other day and that's really the only way to tell a 2021 from a 2020.
i have the viper 1 touch installed on my limited when purchased, much quicker than this, but toyota installed it in a way where i need to unlock the vehicle first, which to me ISNT safe, because intruders can sneak in your truck, get you once your in and youre screwed, so stupid, so i had a shop actually change it and make it so the 4runner stays locked until i open the door.
Thank you man!! Hope you are staying warm!!
@@TRDJon yes, finally warmed up so things are melting, although I think your definition of warm and mine are quite different ;)
I heard a TRD Pro drive by when on a walk. I love the look. But, the exhaust note was horrible. I would rather it just be quiet instead of annoying.
I agree all accept bright interior color 👍
Saw that Toyota is coming out with a TRD branded 2/1 lift kit.. you heard any news? Saw a tweet about it from PN..
Yep! I post on my IG about it. I can make a video if you like
@@TRDJon that would be great. Would love to see how it stacks up against the competition..
I love my 2015 4Runner TRD Pro. My only dislike is the gas mileage. It sucks!!
I love the headlights in mine. The remote start is picky as hell.
That it is
Minty green more than Cement
Jon, what are your thoughts on the roof rack ? Baja insert would finish it off , I’m on the fence on what to do LFD,Gobi,Baja
It’s decent. Not crazy functional.
If the accessory meter brings back, I may trade my tank for a new tank.
That's why I own a GX
