Hey Jon I have a question. Do you know how to fix the wobble you where talking about?. I have a 22 4Runner 4X4 and that wobble bothers me a lot. I’m thinking to trade mine for a 4x2 to solve the issue. Is that the only solution ? I already replaced de needle bearing for the bushing on the differential axle on drivers side. I saw some improvement but it still wobbles.
Have them both. The 4runner has way more versatility. You can sleep in the 4runner and if you have kids, access to a food cooler in the rear cargo area saves you from stopping to access the back. If I were single, I would take the Taco just cause I like trucks better.
@@PS987654321PS true and most people will drop $4k+ on a topper while still having a payoff balance of over 70-80% of the value of the car. But i’m with you. I will get that topper once the taco is paid off.
I'm single and carry passengers sometimes with the Tacoma double cab. I daily drive it. I've gotten in to a lot of DIY home improvement so I prefer the truck bed with a tonneau cover over they jeep suv I had before or a 4runner though either for camping trips would work fine.
I had both vehicles as well. For me, it came down to the rear suspension and the superiority of coil springs over leaves. The other major difference was the weight distribution in the forerunner making it a much better performer in the snow.
I test drove both and I can’t get over the small size of the the cab in the Tacoma. I honestly still want one with a stick someday but I was trading in my F-150 and needed a main vehicle and to me at 6’3, the 4runner is way more comfortable to drive. Now that I’ve had my 4runner a few months, I definitely made the right decision.
Good call! I am 5' 11" and bought a Tacoma many years ago in 2006 and found out within a few weeks (first trip longer than 25 miles) that the seating position was pure torture. I bought the truck for great reliability of course but it soured me on Toyotas for many years. I am, however, taking a very hard look at the 4 runner based on more interior room and the fact that it is still made entirely in Japan.
Great comparison. Of all the brands and models on the market the choice between a Tacoma or a 4Runner seems the most prevalent and sometimes difficult for folk to decide. We had a 2020 SR5 which was wonderful. We needed a pickup to haul stuff around, fill the back with mulch for the garden, haul lumber, etc. Recreationally as sea kayakers, campers, hikers, outdoor activities it’s perfect with a wealth of options to configure the bed for your needs. Just so much more practical. Rear passenger leg room is subjective and we would never make a decision for occasional passengers to feel more comfortable. If you have kids the room is fine. Utility, flexibility is the key. We didn’t want to deal with another large SUV for long trips or even around town. The Tacoma stayed planted, is more nimble, and was a comfortable long-distance driver. Otherwise we would have gone with a Subaru Outback instead. A natural selection and was perfect for our needs. Three (3) years later we traded it in recently for a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road with Predator package, right at the peak of used car prices. Even with the TRD upgrade from the SR5 we almost broke even, less than a $500 difference. Here's a tip on reducing the cost of a “higher model”. Don’t buy off the lot and pay for stuff you will never use or compromise on the color. Instead, sit down with your sales rep and order your Tacoma or 4Runner off of Toyota’s National Inventory. It arrived in 3 weeks. Why? Because the sales rep can sit down with you and DELETE packages or items you do not want and add others you want. The result is that you get a vehicle configured to your specific needs without unnecessary overhead. It brought the cost down to an equally equipped SR5 even including the Predator package which was discounted by Toyota at the time. We also got an additional $x thousand's discount from the dealership (largest sales volume in the SE region) and a couple freebies like hats and free break-in oil change, checkup at 750 miles independent of the regular free schedule. Timing and patience is everything, besides having a great dealership that is responsible, welcoming and knows you as a customer by name when you drop by is important to us. There is never any reason to pay retail or above for a 4Runner or Tacoma. Aside. For the 2022 we added a Pedal Commander. We had reservations, but my wife who always complained about the “sluggishness” loves it and drives faster than ever! With a pickup we added a gun rack for our hiking poles. BTW, if you have a 3D Printer there are hundreds of Tacoma designed parts and accessories for all generations to print for free and you can design your own using a free “maker” license from AutoDesk Fusion 360 CAD program. I recently designed a console insert for my handgun as an example. Search: www.stlfinder.com and www.thingiverse.com . There are many other sites to search.
4 runner all day man the cab space in the Tacoma was just entirely too small especially if your planning on or have a family. That’s one reason. Toyota dealership near me had my taco order in I sat for 7 months no answer with the wrong trans package installed. No remorse or even tried to come to an agreement with pricing once I went to another dealership and started looking at runners. They don’t care they just want your money. Then Aprs are through the roof right now I remember getting 2%s back in the day. Any ways buying the runner was a nightmare they went friendly and they weren’t knowledgeable about the runner with all questions I was asking. Just another job for the girl I was working with. Finally came to terms with them with what I WANTED out of the deal and we made a deal cut 5 k off the msrp of the pre installed packages which to be fair weren’t too bad, 3 things I would have had them taken off but I didn’t want to wait any longer I had already been waiting 7 months for a taco and they could have came back and said they cancelled it. Hedged my bets. But I did get the car at msrp and no mark ups except for the packages with 5k off for Toyota thon. The 4 runner is smoother, bigger, has more room for cargo and I feel the suspension is better. Yes it’s slower but you have to drive the speed limit in CO or they will screw u bad cops don’t play out here. The 3d print option is great I want to have my co worker make me a couple inserts for those weird cubbies that runner has
I’ve got a 2019 cavalry blue TRD OR DCLB, ~80,000 miles and no issues, it’s been a great truck, super solid, no shifting issues either and lived at altitude/mountains. just drove it ~3,500mi from CO to AK and it had no problems.
I’ve had 3 tacomas in the past and my wife has a 4Runner. We recently had twins and found it difficult to put them in the back seats because of the lack of space. So I purchased a ford raptor….at first I loved it, but now I find myself wanting to go back too a Tacoma. To me, there is just no comparison too Toyota vehicles!
@@josevazquez1042 the raptor is very bulky, very hard into parking spaces, and drive thrus. I just know that I won’t get the longevity as a Toyota. I purchased the raptor new 3 months ago, and I’ve already taken it to shop twice. The hinge on back door snapped, and the heating coil to the drivers seat already malfunctioned. I would totally go back to a Tacoma or 4Runner if I didn’t have a Brady bunch family lol. I would opt for a new sequoia but they are impossible to find and the wait list in my area is 2 years out.
There are so many advantages with the 4runner. I had a road trip 2 years ago to yellowstone, 4 people. I have an enclosed carrier on my hitch for other stuff. Used a 12v fridge and another battery and kept all our food fresh even during a night rest. All our stuff are safe inside even on rainy days and accesible. If i had the tacoma, it will be a hassle for sure and the kids uncomfortable and will forever hate road trips that long. :)
I shopped the TRD PRO Tacoma vs 4Runner. I went with the Voodoo 4Runner. I love the space and comfort of the interior. Rear window for the dog, definitely a game changer. Peace of mind I have with bullet proof reliability is also a bonus. Overall I’m very happy with the 4Runner, it has exceeded my expectations.
I have a 19 TRD PRO 4runner and a 21 TRD off-road Tacoma and I definitely like the 4runner better. Looks better drives better. Haven't gotten a chance to test the Tacoma off-road as much as I have the 4runner. Overall both are great vehicles. I just prefer the 4runner if I had to choose one.
The Tacoma definitely looks better. 4Runner kinda looks like an insect from the front. And the overall stance on pick up trucks ALWAYS looks more rugged and muscular than suvs.
Only reason I initally considered the Tacoma TRD Pro over the 4runner TRD Pro was the chance to get it in manual. Ultimately, the 4.0L, better build quality, and space in the back/rear window for the dog outweighed my desire for a 6spd manual.
Yes, that’s the exact dilemma I’m going through.. I REALLY, REALLY want the manual tranny but it’s really hard to not want to get the 4 Runner since it’s such an excellent vehicle.. How do I make this decision? Any thoughts?
@@juliekavanaugh4993 honestly, even not needing the truck bed, I was pretty dead set on the manual Tacoma TRD PRO......but just driving the 4runner and comparing interiors sealed the latter as the better option. I HIGHLY recommend driving both. I'm a manual junkie (my other car is a Type R) and still picked the 4runner, it's just a much better vehicle. Honestly, if you can live without the cool colors and fancy off roady bits, a GX460 is probably the best option overall and a base model can be had for roughly what 4runner TRD PROs are going for......I just like juvenile looking bright colored cars 😂
@@GreekCarFreak Thanks for the reply.. I too am a manual junkie and really want to get another vehicle with a manual.. But we have a 2004 4Runner with nearly 200,00 miles that we bought new then and it’s been great, hence why we’re considering buying another one.. I’ve looked at the GX 460 and really like it, but the base model doesn’t come with a locking rear diff and to get that means even more money on a higher up trim and we are not exactly over flowing with money, so money is a consideration.. But if I had the money, I’d get the GX 460 no questions asked.. Their great vehicles that will last a really long time.. If only I had more money.. 🥲 But maybe I could look at a used one that’s a couple of years old with low miles that would maybe save us some money.. Thank you so much for your reply and you have a great Christmas tomorrow and a happy New Year! 😊
I have both and haul a lot inside both, the went with the 4 runner for comfort modularity and made in japan, there’s a huge quality difference from the domestic NAFTA made vs quality Japanese craftsmanship.
I have the best of both Worlds. A Tacoma for work and anything else I want to do. A 4Runner for anything else I want to do. 👍 I remember watching that 1st video you did - that's how I found your channel
@@anthonygiordano3991 in the SR5 yes. But it's quite a bit of body roll. I have the off-road premium with the KDSS system, the body roll doesn't exist and nosedive. Handles 50 times better
I’ve owned both and ultimately have kept and owned my 2012 TE 4runner with KDSS for 10 solid years now. For room, comfort, and solid build quality you can not go wrong with 4runner. If you need a truck buy a Tundra!
I agree totally. In the end the Tac was too small for our needs. So, we traded it in for an Ford F-450, and added a 4R. Now the wife can pack as much stuff as she wants into the big dually and I only have to go to Costco once every other month! And, we have the 4R for off-roading! Win win. 😃
I can only afford one. So I choose the tacoma for multipurpose. Easy to carry some oversized things like furniture etc. Easy to get things out when I go camping with kids and I don’t have to unload everything from the top or back just to get something from the bottom. SUV is just pain in the buttt when you have so much stuff to bring and you have to unload everything.
I have a 2012 Trail 4Runner and I love that thing so much. I've test driven Tacoma's in the past, thinking if I had a truck I could do more hauling, but impo the 4Runner is the smoother ride and more spacious. I like the idea of a Tacoma, but I prefer the application of the 4Runner. Thank you for your video!
I've owned a 2007 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport with a 6spd manual for the last 11 years. I have 240,000 miles on it. It burns more gas than a f150 (15 city 18 highway) but it is extremely reliable. In it's life I have had to replace the wheel bearings, the clutch, rebuild the universal joint, and do the ball joints. It definitely doesn't have the amenities of a modern truck but if you need something to get you to wherever you need to go and back again it's perfect So far it's been a great investment.
Short story... I own 2010 4runner and 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. I prefer 4runner . I use the tacoma for truck stuff but use the 4runner more often because larger interior and much more comfortable to drive. Also when off roading the 4runner has larger wheels/tires and really enjoys the rough terrain with coil rear shocks. Either way cant go wrong
I had both, sold my tacoma for a 4runner. i liked my tacoma so much more. more tech and the utility of having a bed is unbeatable. especially for people like me who go camping alot and use the bed for hauling wood and what not. 4 runner has a bit more cab room but its not enough to justify the switch. i now have a silverado but thats just my 2 cents. if torn between the two, Go tacoma.
The seating issue of the Taco is resolved if you purchase the Frontier PRO-4X. Better mileage, better power, better interior, and have a better bed. Love the colors of your vehicles.
I feel the 4Runner would be better off road due to less wheelbase and tighter turn radius. Also, the Tacoma has rear c-channel frame for better off road articulation while 4Runner has fully boxed frame for more rigidity. Though KDSS is available in 4Runner. Great video and thank you for saying that Tacoma has leather seats while 4Runner has softex. Not many people know that.
I got a 23 Tacoma SR5 in silver. Double cab and 6 ft bed. I use the bed all the time for tools and water containers. I can dirty it up and then its easy to just spray out at the car wash. I have already moved cabinets, furniture, and other junk with it and towed a double axle cargo trailer. Great daily driver/Work truck. Truck makes more sense for me.
The Tacoma is the favorite in Hawaii! I’ve had 2 Tacoma’s, 2003 and a 2010. Sold both of them and got a nautical blue 2019 4runner. Rides better than the Tacoma for sure!! I also had 2, 87 Toyota’s pickups back in the day. Kinda miss the Tacoma for hauling to be honest.
I have a 2014 FJ TTUE which has the blue paint. Absolutely love it. Gonna replace my antique Jeep '54 CJ-3B with either a Taco or 4Runner. I'm thinking 4Runner but still on the fence. Great video. Thanks for sharing this review.
Own both, love ❤️ them. Got the 4 Runner before the Taco. The husband wanted a new truck, so he got the Taco. What man doesn't like tacos, lol. Plus, he lifted it and added all the extra big truck look, it looks awesome.
Been shopping for a 4Runner the last 1.5 years, and until those prices come back down I am not the guy at MSRP + or close to MSRP used. That Luna color is my current fave.
Same thing here except I wanted new. I want dual climate control and you have to pay $50k for the limited in the 4Runner. My Tacoma cost $34k and has that much used feature. I have a topper coming in for it next week hopefully. Still cost less than a 4Runner with that add on
You could make like an HD 4Runner with the Taco. If you get the large cab and get a topper on the bed, you have the same or more cargo room as a 4Runner BUT without the dirtiness inside the vehicle.
I also have both. I prefer my 4runner over the Tacoma. For me, it's the comfort in the 4runner, the rear coils over leaf springs, the seating position, and more room, and my number one for why I would pick my 4runner over my Tacoma is the J-shift. I don't care for the Toyota electronic transfer case selector in the Tacoma vs the old school shifter for the 4-wheel drive in my 4runner.
2015 4Runner, LTD, 180k miles. Only gripe is the doorlock actuators do not last long, on my third driver side and second passenger side, and neither currently work. One of the parking sonar nodules does not work. I have a bearing that needs to be replaced as well. However it pretty much drives exactly the same way as when I drove it off the lot.
great video! Thank you! I have had my 4Runner for 4 years, and I love it more and more each year. Badassssss. Also, I am a musician so that baby can store my entire drum kit (7 piece) PLUS 2 people and speakers for my electonics.
Proud owner of both. 2018 aces cab trd off-road and 2024 4Runner pro. I can’t compare them. I got the 4Runner a few weeks ago and I parked it in my garage. It does not even have 30 kms on it. lol Iove my truck and don’t want to change.
I have a 4Runner and came out of a Sequoia. I am entering my third year with the 4Runner and it keeps growing on me. It is just a rock solid vehicle. I considered getting a Tacoma, but I can carry pretty much carry any cargo I need in the 4Runner. The only thing I wish I had a truck for would be when mulching the gardens, trash runs, yard cleanup, etc.
The way, I always thought it was is that the Takoma was for people with an active lifestyle, and the forerunner is for people who have an active lifestyle who has now gotten married, and had kids and can’t do what they used to do, but still like to do a little something now and then.
Had a Tacoma sold it and later bought a 4Runner. Miss my 2005 Tundra acces cab with the 4.7L engine and Solo Motorsports prerunner long travel suspension set up.
I would have to go with the 4runner for the simple reason that I like to travel in remote areas and I have had to sleep in my current SUV on several occassions. Oh, and for the additional reason you mentioned - taking the dogs places is a lot easier in an SUV.
I'm 6'5" and own a 4Runner and love the seating position. I couldn't even get into my brother in laws Tacoma without whacking my knee and getting cramped to the point of I'm not sure if I could safely drive it. I did know immediately that I was scratching it off my list for potential new vehicle.
Being a Toyota master technician, I’d say 4runner hands down. I hardly ever see an issue with the 4runner. I’ve seen Tacoma’s throw rods through the block at 4000 miles. Any time a friend asks my opinion I suggest the 4runner but encourage them to drive both to see what suits their needs better
4Runner or Tundra? Sounds like the Tacoma isn’t tops on your list. I’m currently shopping and I’d love your opinion. The advice from someone like you is invaluable to me.
@@anthonygiordano3991 Very tough, I love the room the Tundra offers and would want a long bed but don't like the gas mileage. 4runner is more practical for me as I want to adventure with it, smaller to fit in tight spaces and better mpg and should be large enough for my needs but honestly I wouldn't mind either for the right price!
@@TyrantTiger85 - Sounds like you’re definitely leaning towards the 4Runner. But, I’m in the same boat as you. Can’t do much about the MPG’s, unfortunately. But, I’m looking out for a great deal on either one.. which is not easy to find! I’m even looking out of state. Dealers don’t want to budge.
I have owned them both and loved them both. Great vehicles. I’ve owned the TRD 4Runner for a year and that would be my choice mainly because I don’t have many truck uses that I need a flatbed for. And I put a cap on the Tacoma so I could use it as a 4Runner. So, eventually I came to my senses and got the vehicle that is designed for the purposes that I use it for. Go figure, but the 4Runner is a better SUV than the Tacoma. Who would have thought. I wish I was independently wealthy as you are, then I’d have them both. 😢
I'll say this, I currently have a 4runner, and I had a 2014 Tacoma, and I don't know what it is, but the Tacoma feels way more rugged and powerful as a factory 4x4 off-road vehicle by far.
OUTSTANDING REVIEW. Spot on! I own both as well. 2017 Tacoma and 2024 4Runner. LOVING the 4Runner but my Tacoma is a BEAST for wheelin. 4Runner for my long trips. Need a suspension on the 4Runner.
Steering dampers help with that wobble you mentioned Jon, I don't' know if the newer Toyota's have it or they aren't robust enough. I thought Tacoma at first, then after a good hard look, I would pick the 4runner because of the more security it offers. Thanks for the update. :)
Bought my 4Runner in 2021 and so glad I chose it over the Tacoma. Had a Tacoma TRDOR rental the last two times I was in Colorado and really found it uncomfortable compared to my 4Runner. Tacome impressions: The driving position wasn't great. Felt like I was sitting on the floor. Visibility wasn't great and everything felt cramped. Biggest annoyance: the transmission! It felt like it was searching for a gear on the highway all the time. Constant upshifting to just maintain 70+ mph. The 4Runner engine/trans is so much smoother and more sure of itself. While I did think the Taco was well built and solid feeling I did miss my 4R!
Driving position wise I found the exact opposite to be true. I could never get comfortable in my 4R whereas the Taco is one of the more comfortable vehicles I've driven. In fact I just completed a 1000mil in 3day trip and there was zero fatigue. OTOH I have experienced a bit of gear hunting but only in the mountains of NH, never anywhere else. I don't buy vehicles for their power so that wasn't an issue for either the 4R or Tacoma. Zero issues for either, as compared to the two Jeeps I've had which were both disasters reliability wise, which in fact pushed me towards Toyota. I had a Blazer as well but that was a huge POS.
@@-insert- - You say you were comfortable in the Taco.. how tall are you? Im 6’ and currently shopping and doing my research here. Trying to decide between Taco, 4Runner or Tundra. Taco seems more nimble, 4Runner seems too heavy and Tundra seems too cumbersome.
@@anthonygiordano3991 I'm 5'10". I sit so my eyes are just above the midpoint of the windshield. Fairly upright, virtually no lumbar. Seat is tilted similarly to the passenger seat. As for how nimble it is that's heavily influenced by which version. I had the 4R Limited which shook my fillings loose every time I hit a bump but it was relatively nimble. I have the Off-Road Taco which I wouldn't say is all that nimble but it does feel well planted to the road. The suspension setup, weight distribution, etc., is different between the various versions for both. I picked the OR not because I do a lot of off-roading but because I liked the way it felt when compared to the other trims.
@@-insert- - Thanks for the feedback. I’m going more on feeling myself. I tend to like a sportier feel and the Taco seems like you can maneuver it a little easier than the others. I’ve just never heard anyone say they felt comfortable in a Taco. Everyone always complains about that seating position.
@@anthonygiordano3991 The Taco does have a lighter feel to it. I recall driving to DC in my 4R once (500mi) and my hands were aching due to the steering effort whereas that doesn't exist at all in my Tacoma. And comfort is very subjective. If I can drive several hundred miles with zero fatigue then I couldn't care less about the driving position (as long as it's a safe position). And I'm very picky, I've traded cars just after a few months because I couldn't get comfortable. It took about a month to find my current position. And to ensure that it doesn't ever change, except for back and forth I've actually disconnected the motors under the seat. Regardless I get your concern. I too read all the same comments regarding seating position but in the end a) you tend to hear about the bad experiences vs the good ones and b) it really does come down to how your body is constructed. Toyota continues to sell around 250k per year so conclude from that what you will.
Basically same truck just depending what you want. I wanted to TRD 4Runner but that thing was crazy expensive!! I have a Tacoma I just did the upgrades myself slowly!
Jon, great job on this video review of these two superb Toyota vehicles! I love them both, but if I went with a Tacoma I'd get an ARB camper top. The 4 RNR is just so comfortable I'm sure, and your nearly 5-year-old TRD Pro is in such great shape! I might have to start looking in the south for one without any frame rust! FYI, you should know that some creep is putting out notices that your viewers have won a prize so do let your viewers know.
Had 4 tacomas and a first gen Tundra, my fave truck, have a new 4RL as the change is coming. I love this vehicle. I live above 7000feet in The Rockies.
You are exactly right on the 4runner steering wheel. Just bought mine over two weeks ago, and noticed some vibration going betwen 60-65, but then it gets better at 70 miles plus. Brought back to dealer, they did the tires rotation even though I asked for road force balance since some people recommend it, they said the vibration no long there, however im driving back home and notice its shaking a little bit again. I figured out its just the 4runner problem overall with bigger tires.
On Tacoma seating position "Desert Does It" makes a seat lift (Front Seat Jackers) for the driver's side which vastly improves the seating comfort/height. I'm 6'1" and it made a huge difference. You Tube videos on this product.
I so wish I could. We just paid off our RX but I need to save up for the downpayment of my next vehicle. Otherwise, I’d be buying a 2024 4Runner. I don’t like where Toyota and Lexus are heading with these new engines and powertrains.
Great video - I have an older Tacoma (2008 TRD Off road w/ JBL) that I will keep, I love it. (my son will inherit it.) So I am right now looking at the 4Runner. I'm older, will do less off roading, and wanted something different, maybe a little more comfortable to drive... So I decided Ill be putting a 2023 Off Road Premium on order Monday. Just bummed of all things, why doesn't Toyota offer the JBL system in the off Road Premium!!?? (rhetorical) dumbest thing ever to only offer it in the TRD Pro and Limited!?. (ridiculous really..) Ok with that off my chest, I have one question for you, I saw you had a sort of (Canvas - looking) set of covers in the back of your 4runner. It seemed to be custom fit covering the rear seat backs and sliding rear deck. What kit is that? Id like something similar for my 4 runner, but all the weathertec - style rubber mats just dont do it for me in this area.. Can you please let us know? Thanks!..
As a Tacoma owner, I can say I LOVE my truck, but I wouldn't mind getting a 4Runner for my next vehicle, IF I ever buy anything else. I just retired and only have 32 thousand on my 2018, and literally only drive maybe seventy to eighty miles a week, so I plan on dying with the truck. Still, I would like one but the prices are a bit out there ....... as usual Jon, GREAT video.
My buddy has a Tacoma and it seemed pretty small inside. I also didn’t think I needed a bed since I didn’t haul much so I took the 4Runner. I do like how you can toss anything in the bed of the Tacoma and you can put an rtt in the back instead of the roof.
I have both (v6 versions) along with a fj cruiser (all 4x4). I prefer the build quality of the fj and 4 runner over the tacoma. Not surprising the 2 I prefer are both built in japan and the tacoma in Mexico. Do with this info as you wish. As far as real worl everyday usefulness, the tacoma hands down. I can throw things in the bed and haul appliances and stuff from home depot without a worry. For offroading, it's fj all day. The 4runner has been hijacked by my wife and is officially a pavement princess. My son drives the tacoma and we swap when I need to make weekend hardware store runs.
4runner SR5 w/3rd row bc I have a family. This way I have an off-road capable family vehicle (& it’s not a minivan) glad I have the cloth seats as well.
Tacoma: workman trades and motorcycle friendly; 4Runner: family and dog oriented. I've got a shell on my Tacoma, so best of both. I like being able to thow muddy shovels, rags, paint cans, sand/gravel, gas cans, odd size stuff in the truck bed, then being able to hose out.
I just traded in my charger rt that had lifter issues at 148,000 miles for a 2019 Tacoma sr5 xp and I honestly couldn’t be happier to be back with Toyota, I look forward to having a vehicle that I know will always turn on lol
I went with the 4runner. My dad's got a tacoma that I used a few times. The tacoma drives nicer. The 4runner is an old pig of a vehicle. The tacoma stops nicer, accelerates nicer, and just drives nicer in general. BUT, the 4runner is made better. The materials on the insider are nicer. My dad's interior feels much cheaper. The door panel is already starting to come off since there isn't a bolt behind the handle on the door interior, and its only 4 years old. The sound system on the base models are also WAY nicer on the 4runner. The tacoma also hasn't had the V6 engine and transmission that long, so it's not proven near as well as the 4runner. The engine and transmission have been the same since around 2006 I think. The 4.0 V6 is a million mile engine. That doesn't mean the tacoma is unreliable or not tough, its still a toyota, but the 4runner is a tad bit tougher, and mine tanked a 160 lbs deer straight on and still drove home with no issues. But it also depends on what you're going to use it for, and the difference in quality is minimal. Just make sure with the 4runner the tires are balanced by a good shop. If it isn't balanced, the steering wheel will wobble at higher speeds. If a shop balances it correctly, it won't happen
I worked as a stamping operator and leadman at TABC,in Long Beach, CA. making Tacoma truck beds for 16yrs. And bought my 4runner in 1999 . I've had it since. Their both great vehicles for the buck. My choice of course the 4Runner.
Hey Jon! I am definitely on the fence between a 4th Gen Tacoma TRD Sport or a 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium. Both the SUV or and Pick-Up fit my lifestyle - these would both be a daily driver/weekend adventurer (nothing crazy at all). I value the simplicity of the 5th gen Runner, but I do love the newer interior and tech in the 4th gen Tacoma. I think I'd be happy with either one, but I'm curious to see your thoughts as you've owned both at the same time! Thanks!
The "do you do truck stuff" is such a good question lol. I have an older Tundra looking to get a new vehicle. I rarely use the bed. Looks like 4runner it is for me.
I have a 2019 Tundra TRD Pro in Voo Doo Blue so I’ll take the 4Runner as a perfect garage mate. Several Years ago I had a 1993 4Runner with a manual transmission. Kept it for five years and sold it to a friend. It’s still on the road with nearly 1/2 a million miles.
@@anthonygiordano3991 - From the moment I saw my 2019 Tundra I have loved the Voo Doo Blue. It’s not flashy at all and you will love it in person. Get yourself one. Good luck.
I bought a 2016 almost 7 years ago TRD OFF ROAD. I kept the truck for one year and traded it for a 2500HD(towing reasons) I liked the truck in almost every aspect except for the transmission, that was the thorn in my side, grinding noises, erratic gear changes very annoying issue! If I hadn't needed to tow higher weights I would have kept it. Nice Blue on the TACO
Owned 2 Tacoma's myself and I just got a new 2023 4runner. I'm too lazy to setup a tent so the 4runner was a win and it performs off road better than my 2020 Taco
The 4Runner looks very cool! After two 4runners five Toyota trucks and two FJ‘s. The Tacoma‘s is my most favorite looking vehicle in history. That cavalry blue Toyota 4Runner is beautiful.
The 4runner is great off road if you're just going out on weekends or doing short trips. They can definitely off road, and they come stock with much bigger tires, and are easier to fit bigger tires. But they are SUPER top heavy. So they can't really be a serious off roader like a mid-size truck or Jeep
Thanks for this video. I am retired and living in Northern VA. where we get some snow but not usually huge amounts. I own a 2015 Taco Limited and a 2017 Prius 4. Love them both but as a now single guy I really don't need both, especially since car insurance and personal property taxes keep going up. I like the truck to take to the landfill and carrying other large items and the Prius hatchback for everyday convenience. Here is my idea and I would like some feedback should anyone read this. I am thinking of selling both vehicles and using the cash to buy a new 4Runner while they still have the 4.0L V6 like in my Taco. I don't drive as much as when I was working so gas milage doesn't matter quite so much. I love the mpg the Prius gets but I think I don't drive enough to take full advantage of its gas savings. My Taco doesn't have the safety technology like the Prius or newer 4Runner have. As an older driver (72) I want all the safety tech I can afford. I like the 4Runner as it gives me the convenience of covered cargo space as in the Prius and it gives me most of the truck bed capabilities of the Taco. Any thoughts? Is this a crazy idea? I would love your feedback.
I made my choice..so ordered my 4Runner and it should be in within the next month. Was going to get a Tacoma, then realized I need the internal space much more than external. Getting it undercoated within weeks after delivery.
Bought the wife a used Ram 1500. That thing is nickle and diming us with small issues. I'm saving for a next gen 4Runner, whenever they come out. Had so much better luck with Toyota's.

It's like comparing Toyota to a supermarket cart. Especially chevy.
ZERO comparison.
I’d take the 4Runner. And that color is gorgeous.
@@keith2076 Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but the most practical is white.
Have them both. The 4runner has way more versatility. You can sleep in the 4runner and if you have kids, access to a food cooler in the rear cargo area saves you from stopping to access the back. If I were single, I would take the Taco just cause I like trucks better.
Perfectly said
The Tacoma is way more versatile once you put a topper, cap, camper in the back.
@@PS987654321PS true and most people will drop $4k+ on a topper while still having a payoff balance of over 70-80% of the value of the car. But i’m with you. I will get that topper once the taco is paid off.
No vehicle made in Mexico when others are available. 4Runner is what I chose.

Thought the same thing about Tacomas. Won't need to look at them again. Thanks!
Good call! I am 5' 11" and bought a Tacoma many years ago in 2006 and found out within a few weeks (first trip longer than 25 miles) that the seating position was pure torture. I bought the truck for great reliability of course but it soured me on Toyotas for many years. I am, however, taking a very hard look at the 4 runner based on more interior room and the fact that it is still made entirely in Japan.
damn i really wanted a tacoma but im 6'5 and were basically the same height so seeing what you said might make me choose a 4runner
Same issue. Traded in my Tacoma just due to the back seat size.
@@pennwfangod what about tundra?

Oh heck ya!!! That’s awesome! TBH idk what it is about the long beds, maybe they don’t shift around as much?
I’ve had 3 tacomas in the past and my wife has a 4Runner. We recently had twins and found it difficult to put them in the back seats because of the lack of space. So I purchased a ford raptor….at first I loved it, but now I find myself wanting to go back too a Tacoma. To me, there is just no comparison too Toyota vehicles!
Why don’t house like your raptor anymore? Just curious. I’m a previous taco owner now tundra
@@josevazquez1042 the raptor is very bulky, very hard into parking spaces, and drive thrus. I just know that I won’t get the longevity as a Toyota. I've had my 2023 Off Road TRD Tacoma for about 3 months now and I love everything about it.
It works for a family. But for singles like me, truck all the way.

Both such good colors.

Yea and the 5 speed auto isn't horrible in the 4R
What do you mean better build quality?
the few things that i regret about buying a 4runner are not having it lifted and on 33s yet
I'm right there with you, I got a Tacoma and I also have not had any problems or issues with it.
I have both. 4Runner is shorter (easier to park) and back seat is wayyyy better than taco.
But I hear 4Runner is too heavy (body roll, dip and dive issues).. true?
I've had both as well..4runner all day. Just feels more solid/better built
Taco flat great but 4R is a TANK
But isn’t it true that there’s too much dip and dive when you brake? I heard it seems too heavy.. body roll issues. True?
@@anthonygiordano3991 in the SR5 yes. But it's quite a bit of body roll. I have the off-road premium with the KDSS system, the body roll doesn't exist and nosedive. Handles 50 times better
@@terrynichol577 - True, I bet that makes a huge difference. You’d definitely have to go that route with a 4Runner.
@@anthonygiordano3991 well for sure. I couldn't stand the body roll in the SR5. I mean you can fix that with the new suspension but yeah
I had a choice between 4Runner and Taco I went 4Runner don’t regret it!
4R is OG!!! Can’t beat it!
4Runner. Due to it being made in Tahara factory where LC/LX are being made.
Hey thanks!!
It is better, he's wrong
Those have to be the two coolest colors I’ve ever seen. I wish I could get my Tacoma in that electric blue, wow
Own both, love ❤️ them. Got the 4 Runner before the Taco. The husband wanted a new truck, so he got the Taco. What man doesn't like tacos, lol. Plus, he lifted it and added all the extra big truck look, it looks awesome.
Right on!
I bet he goes for the fish taco’s hey? 😉 😂
Still cost less than a 4Runner with that add on
I just got a 23 Tacoma SR double cab with 4x4 and v6 for 34k out the door. It’s a solid 10-15k cheaper than 4Runners. That’s my main difference.
FGT is the best. Taco size bit interior space and a V8
I would have to go with the 4runner for the simple reason that I like to travel in remote areas and I have had to sleep in my current SUV on several occassions. Oh, and for the additional reason you mentioned - taking the dogs places is a lot easier in an SUV.
Good choice!
I'm 6'5" and own a 4Runner and love the seating position. I couldn't even get into my brother in laws Tacoma without whacking my knee and getting cramped to the point of I'm not sure if I could safely drive it. I did know immediately that I was scratching it off my list for potential new vehicle.
Great video. Intelligent speaker. Nice trucks. Nice HOUSE!

I have owned them both and loved them both. Great vehicles. I’ve owned the TRD 4Runner for a year and that would be my choice mainly because I don’t have many truck uses that I need a flatbed for.
Most people have been able to successfully solve the wobble problem by installing the ECGS bushing
My choice is the Tacoma. Still love mine after 4 years.
I am starting getting same here from other videos and other topics I am watching.
Had 4 tacomas and a first gen Tundra, my fave truck, have a new 4RL as the change is coming. I love this vehicle. I live above 7000feet in The Rockies.
Thanks for sharing!
The cabin space is a huge selling point for me. Especially since I have a kid, it’s very important she’s safe and comfortable.
On Tacoma seating position "Desert Does It" makes a seat lift (Front Seat Jackers) for the driver's side which vastly improves the seating comfort/height. I'm 6'1" and it made a huge difference. You Tube videos on this product.
Nice, great info. I'll keep my 3rd gen runner all day. But definitely entertaining a new 24 tacoma.
Nice breakdown dude! I have loved my Tacoma for over 10 years!
Buy Both !........before the V6 is replaced .
I so wish I could. We just paid off our RX but I need to save up for the downpayment of my next vehicle. Otherwise, I’d be buying a 2024 4Runner. I don’t like where Toyota and Lexus are heading with these new engines and powertrains.
Bought my 4Runner in 2014, no problem till now, love it!
Can't go wrong with either one. All comes down to what do you need more? A truck or suv?
Exactly
Great info. Thanks. I am looking for new vehicle and lean towards 4Runner.
Good choice!
Thanks alot for this video! I've been looking at these two and couldn't decide. This helped a ton :)
(ridiculous really..)
Ok with that off my chest, I have one question for you, I saw you had a sort of (Canvas - looking) set of covers in the back of your 4runner.
4runner for me built like tank no rattles off roading in the interior as well solid all the way round
Super tanky for sure
4Runner to infinity and beyond. But if you guys are planning on upgrading to a full size truck or suv. 2nd gen Tundra and Sequoia for life.
The passenger seat in my Tacoma does the same thing. I haven’t found a solution for it yet. Other than that it’s actually really quiet and comfortable
Wow! The video I could only dream of. How did you know I was cross shopping these 2.
I’m considering the voodoo blue at the moment but does it ever seem too flashy? You ever regret getting that color? Just wondering.
@@anthonygiordano3991 - From the moment I saw my 2019 Tundra I have loved the Voo Doo Blue. It’s not flashy at all and you will love it in person. Get yourself one. Good luck.
@@roccogerard2837 - Thanks man. I’m going to get a chance to see one up close this weekend (Tacoma). The Tundra looks amazing in that color though!
If you're a serious buyer then I would wait for the new models to come out
I bought a 2016 almost 7 years ago TRD OFF ROAD.
I have both and would not drive anything but Toyota!!! You need both honestly!!
The 4Runner looks very cool! After two 4runners five Toyota trucks and two FJ‘s. The Tacoma‘s is my most favorite looking vehicle in history. That cavalry blue Toyota 4Runner is beautiful.
Good choice!
I have both and they are great ! I agree with this review after 3 years of ownership !
bought a 2024 4 runner several months ago. LOVE IT
Nice! Congrats
My personal auto is the 4runner. Tacoma doesn’t cut if for me as I do haul around my 750 Kawasaki ATV need more bed space.
Bought the wife a used Ram 1500. That thing is nickle and diming us with small issues.
I'm saving for a next gen 4Runner, whenever they come out. Had so much better luck with Toyota's.
