Hello, I purchased a 2022 TRD pro and I am having issues with sluggish when driving this truck and I was wondering if there are any issues if I was to utilize ECT when driving the truck to rectify the sluggishness?
Can’t get any 4RUNNERS in manual. Ridiculous. I also drive a manual Tacoma and love it. You lose a part of your soul when you go to automatic transmission...
A new 4Runner doesn't come in a manual transmission, but the third generation and older does. That is if you don't mind driving an older vehicle. I have just over 330,000 mi on mine
For anyone on the fence... I just got my new 2021 TRD off-road 4x4 a couple days ago, and it is insane. Its so much fun to drive, no gear hunting like described on previous years, absolutely awesome ride, and a beast off road. I got it at $600 less than MSRP (they added a $5k markup on all Tacomas models like 2 weeks after I secured mine lol). I can't speak highly enough about it. I am beyond happy.
Started watching this series right after replacing my single cab 2002 Tacoma 2wd. I am extremely pleased with my new 2021 Tacoma SR, especially because I have 4x4 now.
2nd and 3rd gen tacomas all suck!! I had 2 of them, poor quality, frame and metal rusting issues, even when new frames etc, crummy interior and too much plastic. no manual transfer cases?? these trucks are really for on road driving and towing, thats it
Keep it, I don't think these will be as long term reliable with all the tech and plastic. I'm sure they will go 10-15 years but not 20-40 like the originals
@@dundeeecroc Problem is the Tacomas are made all over the place, including Mexico while the 4 Runners are only made in Japan. The NUMMI made trucks were pretty good.

I own a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport, loaded. I live deep in a metropolitan city. The parking sensors and radar-controlled cruise make this thing as easy to drive as a sedan. Sure it doesn't have the fancy birds eye view but what it does have is just enough to allow for quick maneuvering in tight spaces! And the bigger wheels and suspension take all road deteriation like a champ! I personally prefer the pickup configuration because of my lifestyle. Hauling inconvenient things that would damage the interior is something I do on a weekly basis. I love it. I am very happy I replaced my sedan with such a EFFECTIVE and USEFUL truck! I bought it without knowing the history of this truck, and this channel has been stepping me through every detail! Thank you Car Care Nut!
just got a 22' Tacoma off road. Never owned a Toyota before and never planned on owning one either. But it was the only truck available to buy in my area and we bought it for are concrete business bidding rig. Glad we did. The old school feel gos along way, feels very American
Great vid as usual! I have owned several Tacoma's (latest is 2015 4D long bed). My wife has owned several 4Runner's (latest is 2016 Trail). So I am in a unique position to share an opinion. It is this: as admirable as the Tacoma is, I feel that the 4Runner is the better vehicle to drive. IF I was forced to choose, it would be the 4R every time. My only quibble with the 4R is the seat cushioning is lacking (Taco is better), and the vehicle does not do well in a strong crosswind. That is it. But the Tacoma has its value in being able to haul large bulky items. Otherwise, we would be a two 4Runner couple. You are never going to go wrong buying a Tacoma, but the overall quality (fit/finish) is not quite the same. The 4R is a more versatile as well. Unlike the Taco, you can fit 5 adults comfortably in a 4R. You can fold the back seats down and fit a fair amount of cargo in the back of a 4R. Where the Taco shines is hauling 4X8 sheet goods. Most dimensional lumber can fit in either. Being a Toyota junkie, I love having both vehicles.
I rented a Tacoma TRD off road when I was on vacation this winter in the desert sw. fell in love with the truck My tundra is great at towing and hauling and a great vehicle. But since I’m in the short side, I was able to more easily load mountain bikes and other supplies in and out if the vehicle and bed. Put 2k mikes on it and, while the seat wasn’t plush and the ride wasn’t floaty, I really loved the truck Bless ya AMD! Great series
That power driver seat is what brought me back to the Tacoma. I used to have a 2015, but I sold it after a year due to the poor seating position. When I went to test drive a 2021 (which I ended up buying), that seat made all the difference.
I brought a 2021 model SR5 and I just love it I never thought I would ever get a mid size pick up truck but it’s been great. The seats are not too bad because I have power seats but overall love it. It has a bit of tech but no overkill.
Love my 4Runner. I guess that Tacoma’s power train is the best option for the 4Runner’s next gen….. I just can’t imagine a 4cyl turbo with miles of plastic pipes in the next gen 4Runner 😬 GREAT VIDEO AGAIN!!! 🤘🏽
This series answered so many questions. I am looking at buying a 17 Tacoma sport double cab long bed and this series just answered every question about everything I've been hearing going on under the hood minus the serpentine belt problem but that's kind of normal when I've been told by many people the direct injection the mode kicking on and off on and off now I understand wonderful video. Definitely solidified my purchase in a Tacoma
You sir really nailed it on your take on the Tacoma. I’ve owned numerous Toyota’s from 3 Tundras to 2 Tacoma’s. I love Toyota you done great as you are down to earth knowing your stuff.
Thanks for another great series. I have been trying to decide between the 4Runner off-road and the Tacoma off-road for a while. I drove the Tacoma, when pulling out of a road and accelerating I found the body roll excessive. I drove the 4Runner with KDSS and was amazed at the difference. The backseat room in the Tacoma is very small. Just watch TRD Jon’s video comparing the two. His legs are straddling the front seat while in back. The Tacoma was a bit of a dog with its 5th to 6th gear shifting back and forth on the highway at 60mph. I believe the best scenario is a 4Runner with a good 10-12’ utility trailer. The proven 4.0 and 5 spd transmission with all of the technology the 4Runner has now might be the perfect combination for a 20-30 year ownership with very few problems. The new tundra does interest me though but i can’t see the reliability being great for the first few years. The 4Runner off-road premium with KDSS in lunar rock with TRD Pro rims is most likely what I’m ordering. Thanks again for all the information.
have a 5th gen TRD 4Runner with KDSS. was a toss up for my wife and I too. preferred the 4Runner and decided to put a full length roof rack on the top. we use it often and carry all kinds of stuff with a set of ratchet straps! since the back seats fold down and go flat, we can store even more crap inside too! we've stuffed a freezer inside, a 5 1/2 foot table and many other large items that are too heavy to lift onto the roof rack. it's been great for us! my friend bought a the latest tundra, after 3 months of ownership, he keeps talking about getting a 4runner instead. We bought it used with about 80,000 miles on it. it's been SOLID. we go off-roading and rock crawling here on the west coast almost every weekend. all we do is maintain all the fluids and away we go. been on group runs with several jeeps... they had to pull over and let their engines cool down, don't have to worry about that with Toyotas. my wife and I are beyond happy with our 4runner, 2 years in and the novelty still hasn't worn off. you'll love your 4runner!
I have 2 children so I have the 4Runner currently. But as soon as they get a little older where I don’t need to carry strollers and diaper bags I am going back to Tacoma where I can take bicycles and fishing poles easier.

Bought a fully loaded 21, love it. Fixed the row biggest complaints, it had powered seats plus I installed seat jackers and the newest KD MAX PRO Tune is like driving a completely different truck. No more gear hunting, it holds gears and you don’t even notice the shifting anymore. 15 k in upgrades and the truck still holds its new value. Got to love that.
AMD, my '17 V-6 Tacoma is currently getting 26.6 mpg, and I find it hard to believe too! I live in a rural area, so I can drive most of the time at a constant speed. Last year while returning from MT, this pickup was doing 80 mph and getting 23.5 mpg. The bloody transmission drives me bonkers, but I doubt a manual transmission could do much better. My pickup has the long wheel base and is an extended cab. The navigation system included with the pu is horrible, but being older, I still use maps. My wife's '16 4Runner rarely gets more than 18.5 mpg. Her rig is more comfortable to drive, but I've had a pickup most of my life and Toys have been my go to since 1997. I live in Thailand where the Tacoma and Tundra are not available but I still watched the whole series. I have a Toyota Hilux Double Cab in Thailand that is a 1 tonne truck (actually carries 1200 kgs) with a simple 2.8 diesel 4 cylinder meaning lots of torque. I am surprised that the USA does not offer this small truck because I think it would sell.
My first Tacoma was an 07 DC SB TRD OR. Loved that truck to 243,000 miles. The last drive was 565 miles to pick up my 2021 DC SB TRD OR in Voodoo Blue. Why another Tacoma? I like a midsize truck for doing my job as a real estate agent, looks good, maneuverable, signs fit in the back, etc. I love taking it off-road, I love that it tows my camper, I love that the truck is always ready for adventure or whatever I throw towards it and I like the aftermarket support. Never flinches, never backs down, comes back for more, and more and more!
This was my dilemma in 2018 when I was buying a vehicle, 4Runner or Tacoma. I like the Tacoma because of it's, as you say, blend of modern features and old school features and it's a nice looking rig, especially the TRD Pro in black. One aspect of the Tacoma that I couldn't get used to, was the "ass on the floor" seating position. The 4runner has a chair height, upright position that was much more comfortable. I easily choose the 4runner because of it's simplicity and reputation and the 4.0 V6/5-speed - old school and proven design made in Japan (big bonus). The 3.5 in the Tacoma just seemed a bit short on torque and the 6-speed at the time was still a bit quirky. Working at a Toyota/Ford dealership also gave me lots of time to see what other customers were experiencing with their Tacomas/4runners.
The 4.0 put out more torque down lower rpm range the 3.5 has to be floor boarded to feel any torque Why is toyota so reliable its because they make shure you don't have enough power to break anything
@@dudeski934 Agreed, been saying this for years. As with most Toyota engines, power is more than adequate for day-to-day use. Small displacement turbocharged engines can offer much better performance and in some cases fuel economy. While that may look good on paper, in the real world it isn't the best for long term reliability for such a small engine to be almost constantly under boost powering 4000 lbs. vehicles.
I had a 2019 Tacoma, I traded it for a ‘21 4Runner because I had grown to dislike the 3.5 where I live at 6700 ft. Always had to have the foot into it to get any torque, and always above 3500 rpm. The 4Runner just lugs around at 2k not breaking a sweat compared to the 3.5.
Thanks for the series AMD well done! I loved my brand new 1992 Toyota extra-cab V6 5spd 4X4 Truck for 14 years. And yes, with the locking gas door. I have the exact same Tacoma as in your video now except a 2020 in Super White. We love the power adjustable drivers seat. I'm 5'-11" and my wife is 5'-4". We can both comfortably find a seating position we like. Yes long box is a handful but very practical with a family. I've gotten used to the computer controlled engine/transmission. My wife and I both love the old school ride and sound of the noisy D-4S engine. Driving this Tacoma brings back so many fond memories of exploring everywhere with our 1992 Truck before kids. We are very please to be back in a Toyota Truck again. We couldn't afford a new 2006 4dr Tacoma when our first kid came along so we opted for a used 2003 Nissan Pathfiner. Served us well for 15 solid years until we wore it out and bought the Tacoma. Only concerns for me is possible Super White paint peel and the plastic used in some critical engine cooling components. Other than that I hope to keep it for a long time or we can't get gas anymore. Oh, we were just off road with the TRD Sport 4X4 last week and it was awesome. I did tear my front passenger mud flap off tho. Yes. I like the mud flaps despite being a liability off road. Thanks again for sharing your God given talent.
We have a 2021 toyota 4runner trd off road premium. It is slow it is heavy and not the most comfortable ride, its not that good on gas. However we knew all this when buying it and we do not regret our decision. It is a RELIABLE machine and im still able to do my own basic maintenance. Also its just plain cool to us!
Just purchased a 2022 Tacoma TRD Offroad. I actually kind of stumbled on the truck by sheer chance. The dealer didn't have any available, someone cancelled their order and their truck became available. So instead of waiting months, I waited 12 days! So far I really like the truck. Much better than the Hyundai I owned haha

The tie breaker for me was which one has a good transmission? The Tacoma is the only one still offering a good transmission so I bought myself a manual Tacoma and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I don’t have to deal with the annoying gear hunting and I have full control over my driving. I don’t mind the safety features. All that does is lower my insurance rates lol. Don’t even need to use them! I’ve been wanting a truck for a while and the Tacoma was the only truck out there that had what I needed!
@@KiyaWarrior they both are selectable 4wd… neither one is full time. Full time means you can’t put it into 2wd and you can only select between hi and lo
Had the 2016, the torque is awesome. Traded it for the 2020 double cap, long bed TRD. Love it. Got the KDMAX pro tune. Responce with 93 octane and ECT will make you fall in love with you Tacoma all over again. Thanks for your vids, will be referring to them in the future.
I bought my first Toyota truck in 1976. My next purchase was the first Toyota production 4x4 with a live front axel, 20R engine, and manual tranny/transfer case. My sole after market upgrade was 30” Goodyear wranglers on white spoke wheels. It was a goat! I paid $8,500 originally in 1979 and sold it in 1998 for $2,500 (it was a sad day). Twenty years later I bought my third Toyota truck, a new 2018 SR5 4x4 and I love it. Intend to drive it until I die (I’m 67 so it’s a reasonable expectation). I’m an avid fly fisherman so this truck (affectionately named “The Fish Taco”) gets me to my remote angling destinations. Thank you for your honest and insightful videos on all things Toyota/Lexis.
Bought a used 2019 Tacoma SR 4x4 Access cab with 58K. When I was considering it, I wasn't really sure it would fit in my garage. The salesman had me drive it home and check to see if it fit. It did, with just a few inches to spare. I bought it because it had high road clearance and four wheel drive so I don't have to worry about removing the snow from my driveway or getting to work in the winter. That it had a CD player and a real key (and no start/stop function) I considered quite a plus!
I just got 26.7 MPG on my 2020 Tacoma Limited on a trip from Victorville Ca to Reno Nv.and back.I've driven Toyota's since 1967 and i love them all.Great videos keep em coming.
I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport with the short bed. It fits in my garage well. I like it because it has a responsive suspension and an excellent turning radius. It has the LED light package, the technology and towing package which I find are very useful. I did install the seat jackers on the passenger front seat so it gives more thigh support. The drivers seat has good bolsters to keep you in the seat when on rough roads, I still have the factory wheels and tires so it has a nice ride. Much better than my 2009 GMC diesel with the Z71 off-road and towing package. I think people experience a rougher ride with the off road TRD package due to suspension, tire and wheel sets. My Tacoma gets 20;plus mpg in town and up to 25mpg on the highway. That is great mileage for any sizable truck. I live in Wyoming and it handles very well in the snow with the factory tires. That said though, I’m getting new snow tires for this winter to go off-roading to hunt and fish. I don’t service my own truck and I love the front grill. I don’t know what my Toyota dealer does about the awesome looking front grill when they service it but that is what I pay them for. Haha. I’m still on the 2 yr service with only 11,000 miles on my truck. I have the oil changed every 5,000 miles. Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them as much as I enjoy my Army Green w/ blackout package, Tacoma. Oh, It’s wheels are unique to the Sport edition and they are the best looking wheels that Toyota uses, in my humble opinion.
A friend has a '13 that won't quit. That got me interested in a '19. I loved it. Except for the seat. I took it in for it's 50,000 km service and the salesman offered me a chance at a '21. I didn't look back! The ONLY thing I don't like about it, is you have to be on level ground to shift into 4L. Other than that, I love this truck and it's probably my last truck. Thank you for all your videos, I've learned a tremendous amount about servicing my Tacoma!
Had a blast with the 2011 Tacoma OR, especially once I installed the TRD Pro suspension. If you can swing a TRD Pro suspension upgrade (which is probably over priced) or otherwise an adjustable suspension from Fox or King or Bilstien, you can have the best of both worlds with a plush ride for bumps and firm-enough handling for on road driving.

When I had to move on from my 2004 Tundra Double Cab LTD TRD with All Weather Package because of frame rot, that my local mechanic wouldn't put on his lift anymore because one broke in half & ruined his lift, I spent 5 weeks researching UA-cam videos convincing myself that the Tacoma SR model 7514C, 2.7L Utility Version, 6' bed, 4×4 would be the best one for me. Mostly from your educated experience & testimony, I drove mine home May 25 & have already put 1,600 miles on it with no regrets. At 73, I've gone from all the "bells & whistles" to no "bells & whistles", but I have economical & reliable transportation & with my continued attention to scheduled preventative maintenance, I'm confident that that cast iron block engine will surpass the Tundra for lifetime mileage. Keep up the great content.
Thanks again AMD for the series on informative videos. However, I respectfully disagree with your opinion about the transmission, I think the transmission works flawlessly, the problem is the gearing and the lack of engine's torque to move the truck in overdrive. I do agree in the seating position and seats not been the best. It is a very common complaint among users and in reviews. Isn't ironic that Mike Sweers was a principal engineer with a focus primarily in seats and seat belts design back in the 90's. It baffles me, how Mike Sweers can be the Chief Engineer in charge of the Tacomas and Tundras, when can't design a seat or a drive train.
Still running my 2004 TRD PreRunner Tacoma. V6 with the 4 speed automatic transmission, no problems. Has 217k miles and not no plans of getting rid of it! Love it!
Thanks for a great program. Again. I have a 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5. I love it except for the fact that the seats are horrid. Drive it for about 3 hours and you will be limping out of the truck. Getting in and getting out is also a royal pain. The seats really suck.
True, but overall the Tacoma has everything you need. I owned all 3 pros, tundra was my favorite but the Tacoma is overall the best balance between the 3 (especially in manual). It has 4Runner offroad capabilities, a bed and best MPG of all 3. I have a 16’ enclosed trailer it pulls no problem. (Looks wise it’s my least favorite though)
@@antonioreyes4322 we have Tacomas at my old job (just retired). We had 2018-2020. The seating position is the only reason I don't like them. I agree, they are amazing trucks. As far as mid-size trucks go. I don't know, it is possibly a deal-breaker for me.
I bought a 2021 TRD off road DC 4x4 in a automatic trans , with the tech and premium pkg , I absolutely love this truck out here in Az I’m averaging 24mpg highway and about 20 in the city , I do use 91 octane gas because I did see diff in fuel mileage and it livened up the truck a little more than when I was using 87 octane . My family and I have have been on a cross country trip with it and already have 9,000 miles on the clock & the more I drive it the more I like it . This will be my last truck I ever purchase .
I recently purchased a 2021 army green offroad. I like it more and more everytime i drive it. No regrets! Especially when i paid 29k for a fully loaded, salvage title though.

I love my 2020 Tacoma. It’s my second Tacoma (1st was an ‘08 X-runner). The only wish I had in my crew can long bed TRD off-road is a manual transmission.
I bought my 2016 Tacoma Limited 4x4 back in April of 2019, with just under 15K miles on it. I love it and I have put it through it's paces. In 2020/2021, my wife and I moved form SoCal to Southern Utah and we made many trips, pulling a 5x10, enclosed trailer. It really did a great job. Here it is April 2023, and it now has over 70K miles on it. This is not my first Tacoma, but my second. My first was a 2004 4dr, TRD, but not a 4x4. My wife did not like it because it was too rough of a ride for her. Where as my 2016 Limited rides just fine for her. (I call it my Old Man's truck, for the way it rides, compared to my 2004). Also, I might add, that I also had 1988 Toyota std. cab pickup and a 1993 Toyota extra cab pickup. Of course my 2016 has been my favorite. Thanks for doing this review, I can relate to it very well.
Thank you for a very informative series. I currently own a 2016 Tacoma & 2019 Tundra 1794 Edition. I am definitely keeping the Tacoma and trading in the Tundra only because of the gas mileage. I am still undecided between the 4 Runner or another Tacoma.
Thank you for the series and advice. I’m a current and new owner of a 2023 Tacoma Sport premium(Canadian version). A few gripes, there is no standardization between the American and Canadian versions, I got the premium package in Canada, hoping I’d have LED lights, parking sensors, JBL audio etc that I’ve seen on US models of similar “package.” I like the truck….yes, handles like a truck, I came from a 2012 RAM 1500 Bighorn, great handling truck, great audio etc. it might have spoiled me lol. I’m warming up to Tacoma, I wanted to down size and a “bit better” gas mileage. I noticed a jerk when partial throttle at around 60 Km/hr, could be fuelling programming, reminds me of my Ducati monster below 3000 rpm, it didn’t like it until I added some O2 emulators that added a straight 13:1 fuel ratio by fooling the ECU to add fuel. Another quick question, I switched to winter wheels and was told I need to get my TPMS reprogrammed every time I switch wheels, I’ve driven it so far and I have not gotten any warning on the dash. I did the reset on pressure reset button. Thanks again!!
Love my toyota tacoma, I had a 2020 and now a 2022. It might not be the most polished and refined truck out there, but it just works and never let me down. I also had a 2021 Ford f150 with the v6 twin turbo and 10 speed transmission which drove like butter, but I missed the smaller and more maneuverable tacoma that made offroading and overlanding a blast.
I agree about the seats and the seating position. I believe the seats are too wide for the cab. The center console lid rubs both front seats and rattles non-stop while driving. The rattle drives me crazy! I do love my truck but I am annoyed by this problem.
The locks on the gas caps rust and seize in salt states. I had to lube mine regularly to keep it free and i noticed the truck a couple years after I sold it had the entire flap removed. This of course was a proper key operated lock.

I like your review. There needs to be more honest reviews like this. I bought a 2021 Tacoma back in May and I hate it. Truly noting to be proud of owning. So many things you pointed out about that are negative I agree but I’ve noticed other things too. Going to get rid of it soon.
I have to be honest. I bought a 2021 taco limited. Just didn't do it for me. Wife demanded it in the divorce and i didn't fight too much. Now I drive a 2011 lexus es350 and will rent a truck if I need one. The taco just kind of felt anemic all the way around. Quality, sure. Just didn't feel right. The lexus, on the other hand, is outstanding. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles but man, do I like this car.
Fantastic topic and video. I initially was going to get the 4Runner but realized the truck works better for hauling what I need. I was planning to get the double cab and long bed, but based on what you mentioned, will do 5’. Wait time now is 6-8 months and it not guaranteed. Have not put deposit down. Will see if KDSS makes it to Tacoma …
I have a 2020 TRD sport 2wd. The power seat does make a big difference. It gets the best V6 gas mileage of any vehicle I’ve owned. I consistently get 22-26mpg highway mileage. I have a K&N intake and a Toyota TRD exhaust. The annoyances are minor. The engine and transmission don’t always communicate with each other well. The Atkinson cycle engine doesn’t deliver power in a linear manner. You can definitely feel a surge of power when the engine goes from Atkinson cycle to Otto cycle. It feels like a prominent turbo lag where the engine feels lazy and then gets this burst of power. The Atkinson cycle accounts for the better fuel economy. It’s a better system than variable cylinder management. In GM and Ram trucks the engines don’t like that system and destroy cams and lifters. It’s a very expensive repair. This is my third Toyota truck. My two previous trucks never required repair, only maintenance. They both went well over 100,000 miles. This truck has 62,000 miles and so far has been very reliable, only needing maintenance which I’m very compulsive about. As you say, take care of your truck and it’ll take care of you!
Since the 4runner is anticipated to be remodeled in 2023, I hope you do a video about if anyone is interested in a 4runner, buy one now or wait for the remodel. I like and prefer low technology cars so I am leaning to buy a 2022 4runner before the model change. Call me crazy?

I like Toyota. I bought my daughter a 2022 Corolla hybrid. I also own a Jeep Wrangler, which has been trouble free. What I don't understand about Toyota's pursuit of perfection though, is why can't they properly galvanize their truck's frames? I understand that the Tacoma and Tundra frames were supplied by Dana Corp that didn't properly rust treat them, but even the 5th generation 4Runners which are assembled in Japan, have frame rust issues? That's the only thing keeping me from buying a Toyota body-on-frame vehicle at the moment.
Had a '21 Tacoma in voodoo blue. It was good around town but seemed floaty on the highway at speed. Rear seats didn't hold enough for our road trips. Great trade in value though; traded it for a Ford F-450 and got nearly full value after a little more than a year and close to 20 K miles. Now the wife has all the room she needs for luggage! 😂 Love our '17 4R ORP with upgraded Bilstein 5100 shocks.
We have owned a 2003, 2013, and a 2020 Tacoma. I had no Complaint about the seats in any of them. My wife liked the seat in the 2003, instantly hated the seat in the 2013 and now likes the seat in the 2020. It’s down to the individual.
I have a 2020 4runner ORP. I love it. Been thinking about trading it in for a tacoma though. Maybe a trd sport. I dont go off road. Would like it for yard work and to either build a camper or get a popup camper. A lot of people say the 4runner is a more comfortable ride though. Also, the Tacoma is small in the cab. Put 4 people in there and your snughed. Then no room for things and have to be put in the bed.
Thanks for the video Sir. I had a 2017 TRD Off-Road Tacoma and hated the tranny settings. On any slight uphill road grade, it would drop 2 gears to make it up. I put in a ShiftSense Pro, and what a lifesaver. Made me love this Taco - except for one thing.... I'm 6' tall, and almost other every day or so, upon entering this Taco, I'd crack my head on the door frame sill. Fast forward past a bunch of headaches, I brought the Taco in for 24K miles service. I had to pee, had to walk through the salesroom, and saw a Barcelona Red SR5 "Premium" 4Runner. Peed, came back out and drove it home. Since then, I hated how hard I had to hit the accelerator to get this truck to move. If I mashed it, it would certainly go. Learned about something called "Pedal Commander", and just like Taco + ShftSense Pro, $Runner and Pedal Commander is awesome. Sir, My question is, will Pedal Commander void the warranty?
I had a 2018 TRD pro 4Runner and now own a 2021 Tacoma TRD off road 4x4 in a automatic to me Tacoma is better . 3.91 gears lower 1st gear in trans crawls better , vs the 4Runner 3.73 gears #2 the 2GR-Fks is a 6 bolt main and I do get 15mpg when towing my car behind it which is 5700#’s and 24MPG on the highway #3 the bed of the truck #4 Tacoma TRD off road comes with a 8.75inch ring gear vs 8inch ring gear in the 4Runner . Both are good machines but after owning both I would not go back to the 4Runner but that’s just me .
Your spot on, the power sliding rear window is great, I had a hell of a time getting that on my 2006 F150 back then cause you needed this package in order to get it etc. etc. but if you can have that feature it is really nice. The seats are not so good is being generous, the are out and out uncomfortable, especially compared the F150 I had. But I am getting 21 / 22 in the city and 23 / 24 MPG on the highway so I like that. Being a Toyota I expect quality and hope it will deliver. The only thing I did not like is all the plastic components under the hood but more and more car makers are doing this and it seems like it might be inescapable. The SR5 which is what I got has almost as many features as my F150 Lariat (which is one of the top trim). Thanks for the series, some of your insight in deciding to get it 2021. What an interesring series...I learned quite a bit from your professional knowledge about my TRD OR 4X4...However, listening to an end user from Chicago rave about the Tacoma's talents and abilities is like listening to a fellow co-worker at the Daily Planet rave about what great a colleague 'Clark Kent' is...despite the fact that he is awkward, shy, self-conscious, and clumsy....You see you will never know its true quality until the 'S' hits the fan and the 'S' on the chest of this rig is revealed on the trails and in the wild (it's almost as if Toyota observed the fans of this truck for decades and knew what they did with them and gave them more of what they wanted: Tacomas in California are a dime a dozen...they are basically our State Truck...just saying.) Only then does anything make any sense about this truck.... -From the Forrests, Rocky Mountains, Desert Dunes, and Urban Wastelands of California...
I don't think the Tacoma or 4runner are better than the other. I think it's what you want and need. Do you want a closed in comfortable SUV or do you need to haul things sometimes you don't want hogging up your nice interior? If so you might prefer a truck. I came from a Jeep Liberty SUV so some family and friends were surprised I wanted a Tacoma. But so far I've found many uses for it. Just today hauling trash from cleaning my mom's house. Hauling camping gear, bikes, mowers and things I'm glad were in the bed not inside. As far as comfort the 2019 Tacoma i first drove was ok. I liked the more simple dash layout and controls over the Ranger. I liked the build quality and reliability reputation more. I felt like with the SR5 more things and tech that I wanted was standard than on ranger XLT so i was getting a good value. The power seat in the 2020 I ended up in with the Android auto or apple car play feature really put it over the top. Ford sync 3 sucks and is extra money to add. It was my first new vehicle. I saved for 2 years to make to purchase with a big down payment so I researched it well. A year out I'm very happy with the truck.
I think depending on your body type, makes a big difference on comfort. I’m 5-10. 200 lbs athletic type and I’ve been in my 2016 Tacoma for almost six years and very comfortable
I have the Tacoma TRD off-road and my Son has the 4Runner TRDPro both are equally awesome. Can’t go wrong with either one just depends on your preference. You are over exaggerating how rough and old school the ride is. The new ones are greatly improved I have driven cross country several times and off-road it is awesome. But I guess you’re a sedan guy.
Complaining about the length is not valid. It is a basic characteristic of the truck or any truck with a "long bed." I'm tired of hearing people comment on the ride: it is bumpy, it is rough... I don't think that is valid either. I've owned older, full-size trucks and the Tacoma's ride is nothing like those older trucks. The Tacoma has a soft ride compared to those trucks. If you want something that does not have a stiff ride, stay away from trucks and sports cars. This is basic knowledge. Claiming people mostly buy a Tacoma because of its "old schoolness" is a silly statement. People buy Tacomas because they are the most reliable small truck on the market and have been for well over a decade, if not multiple decades. Tacomas are also great offroad. People buy Tacomas because the price, acceleration, bed size, interior room, gas mileage...are comparable to other vehicles in the segment and the Tacoma is much more reliable that those other vehicles.

Hello, I purchased a 2022 TRD pro and I am having issues with sluggish when driving this truck and I was wondering if there are any issues if I was to utilize ECT when driving the truck to rectify the sluggishness?
One thing drew me to the Tacoma , simply it is the only manual transmission truck left. Resale value was just a bonus.

A new 4Runner doesn't come in a manual transmission, but the third generation and older does. That is if you don't mind driving an older vehicle. I have just over 330,000 mi on mine
The new Tacoma only has manual transmission with the Sport package TDR.

For anyone on the fence... I just got my new 2021 TRD off-road 4x4 a couple days ago, and it is insane. Its so much fun to drive, no gear hunting like described on previous years, absolutely awesome ride, and a beast off road. I got it at $600 less than MSRP (they added a $5k markup on all Tacomas models like 2 weeks after I secured mine lol). I can't speak highly enough about it. I am beyond happy.

2nd and 3rd gen tacomas all suck!! I had 2 of them, poor quality, frame and metal rusting issues, even when new frames etc, crummy interior and too much plastic. no manual transfer cases?? these trucks are really for on road driving and towing, thats it
Keep it, I don't think these will be as long term reliable with all the tech and plastic. I'm sure they will go 10-15 years but not 20-40 like the originals

I own a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport, loaded. I live deep in a metropolitan city. The parking sensors and radar-controlled cruise make this thing as easy to drive as a sedan. Sure it doesn't have the fancy birds eye view but what it does have is just enough to allow for quick maneuvering in tight spaces! And the bigger wheels and suspension take all road deteriation like a champ!
I personally prefer the pickup configuration because of my lifestyle. Hauling inconvenient things that would damage the interior is something I do on a weekly basis. I love it. I am very happy I replaced my sedan with such a EFFECTIVE and USEFUL truck!

Great vid as usual! I have owned several Tacoma's (latest is 2015 4D long bed). My wife has owned several 4Runner's (latest is 2016 Trail). So I am in a unique position to share an opinion. It is this: as admirable as the Tacoma is, I feel that the 4Runner is the better vehicle to drive. IF I was forced to choose, it would be the 4R every time. My only quibble with the 4R is the seat cushioning is lacking (Taco is better), and the vehicle does not do well in a strong crosswind. That is it. But the Tacoma has its value in being able to haul large bulky items. Otherwise, we would be a two 4Runner couple. You are never going to go wrong buying a Tacoma, but the overall quality (fit/finish) is not quite the same. The 4R is a more versatile as well. Unlike the Taco, you can fit 5 adults comfortably in a 4R. You can fold the back seats down and fit a fair amount of cargo in the back of a 4R. Where the Taco shines is hauling 4X8 sheet goods. Most dimensional lumber can fit in either. Being a Toyota junkie, I love having both vehicles.
I rented a Tacoma TRD off road when I was on vacation this winter in the desert sw. fell in love with the truck My tundra is great at towing and hauling and a great vehicle. But since I’m in the short side, I was able to more easily load mountain bikes and other supplies in and out if the vehicle and bed. Put 2k mikes on it and, while the seat wasn’t plush and the ride wasn’t floaty, I really loved the truck

That power driver seat is what brought me back to the Tacoma. I used to have a 2015, but I sold it after a year due to the poor seating position. When I went to test drive a 2021 (which I ended up buying), that seat made all the difference.
Maybe it's my average 5'7" size, but I have no problem with my 2018 Tacoma Off Road seating position....??

I brought a 2021 model SR5 and I just love it I never thought I would ever get a mid size pick up truck but it’s been great. The seats are not too bad because I have power seats but overall love it. It has a bit of tech but no overkill.
I own a 5th Gen 4R cause of the short wheel base, & 4.0L.
Love my 4Runner. I guess that Tacoma’s power train is the best option for the 4Runner’s next gen….. I just can’t imagine a 4cyl turbo with miles of plastic pipes in the next gen 4Runner 😬

I am looking at buying a 17 Tacoma sport double cab long bed and this series just answered every question about everything I've been hearing going on under the hood minus the serpentine belt problem but that's kind of normal when I've been told by many people the direct injection the mode kicking on and off on and off now I understand wonderful video. Thanks for another great series. I have been trying to decide between the 4Runner off-road and the Tacoma off-road for a while. I drove the Tacoma, when pulling out of a road and accelerating I found the body roll excessive. I drove the 4Runner with KDSS and was amazed at the difference. The backseat room in the Tacoma is very small. Just watch TRD Jon’s video comparing the two. His legs are straddling the front seat while in back. The Tacoma was a bit of a dog with its 5th to 6th gear shifting back and forth on the highway at 60mph.
I believe the best scenario is a 4Runner with a good 10-12’ utility trailer. The proven 4.0 and 5 spd transmission with all of the technology the 4Runner has now might be the perfect combination for a 20-30 year ownership with very few problems.
The new tundra does interest me though but i can’t see the reliability being great for the first few years. The 4Runner off-road premium with KDSS in lunar rock with TRD Pro rims is most likely what I’m ordering.

have a 5th gen TRD 4Runner with KDSS. was a toss up for my wife and I too. preferred the 4Runner and decided to put a full length roof rack on the top. we use it often and carry all kinds of stuff with a set of ratchet straps! since the back seats fold down and go flat, we can store even more crap inside too! we've stuffed a freezer inside, a 5 1/2 foot table and many other large items that are too heavy to lift onto the roof rack. it's been great for us!
my friend bought a the latest tundra, after 3 months of ownership, he keeps talking about getting a 4runner instead.
We bought it used with about 80,000 miles on it. it's been SOLID. we go off-roading and rock crawling here on the west coast almost every weekend. all we do is maintain all the fluids and away we go. been on group runs with several jeeps... they had to pull over and let their engines cool down, don't have to worry about that with Toyotas.
my wife and I are beyond happy with our 4runner, 2 years in and the novelty still hasn't worn off.

I have 2 children so I have the 4Runner currently. But as soon as they get a little older where I don’t need to carry strollers and diaper bags I am going back to Tacoma where I can take bicycles and fishing poles easier.

Bought a fully loaded 21, love it. Fixed the row biggest complaints, it had powered seats plus I installed seat jackers and the newest KD MAX PRO Tune is like driving a completely different truck. No more gear hunting, it holds gears and you don’t even notice the shifting anymore. 15 k in upgrades and the truck still holds its new value. Got to love that.
AMD, my '17 V-6 Tacoma is currently getting 26.6 mpg, and I find it hard to believe too! I live in a rural area, so I can drive most of the time at a constant speed. Last year while returning from MT, this pickup was doing 80 mph and getting 23.5 mpg. The bloody transmission drives me bonkers, but I doubt a manual transmission could do much better. My pickup has the long wheel base and is an extended cab. The navigation system included with the pu is horrible, but being older, I still use maps. My wife's '16 4Runner rarely gets more than 18.5 mpg. Her rig is more comfortable to drive, but I've had a pickup most of my life and Toys have been my go to since 1997. I really enjoy your informative videos and will follow your guidance about maintenance - THANK YOU!

I have a Toyota Hilux Double Cab in Thailand that is a 1 tonne truck (actually carries 1200 kgs) with a simple 2.8 diesel 4 cylinder meaning lots of torque.
I am surprised that the USA does not offer this small truck because I think it would sell.
Possibly we don’t have it in the US if it doesn’t already have all our environmental stuff on it.
Emissions is why we don't have it. The diesel trucks we have are loaded with expensive emissions tech and not worth it for most people.

My first Tacoma was an 07 DC SB TRD OR. Loved that truck to 243,000 miles. The last drive was 565 miles to pick up my 2021 DC SB TRD OR in Voodoo Blue. Why another Tacoma? I like a midsize truck for doing my job as a real estate agent, looks good, maneuverable, signs fit in the back, etc. I love taking it off-road, I love that it tows my camper, I love that the truck is always ready for adventure or whatever I throw towards it and I like the aftermarket support. Never flinches, never backs down, comes back for more, and more and more!
My new 4Runner arrived yesterday. I am loving it. Feels solid and well made. Much quieter and more comfortable ride than my 2007. Highly recommend.
This was my dilemma in 2018 when I was buying a vehicle, 4Runner or Tacoma. I like the Tacoma because of it's, as you say, blend of modern features and old school features and it's a nice looking rig, especially the TRD Pro in black. One aspect of the Tacoma that I couldn't get used to, was the "ass on the floor" seating position. The 4runner has a chair height, upright position that was much more comfortable. I easily choose the 4runner because of it's simplicity and reputation and the 4.0 V6/5-speed - old school and proven design made in Japan (big bonus). The 3.5 in the Tacoma just seemed a bit short on torque and the 6-speed at the time was still a bit quirky. Working at a Toyota/Ford dealership also gave me lots of time to see what other customers were experiencing with their Tacomas/4runners.
@@RagingBad 4runner has slightly more at 278 vs. 265 for the Tacoma. Negligible difference, but the 4runner just seemed better in day-to-day driving.
The 4.0 put out more torque down lower rpm range the 3.5 has to be floor boarded to feel any torque

@@dudeski934 Agreed, been saying this for years. As with most Toyota engines, power is more than adequate for day-to-day use. Small displacement turbocharged engines can offer much better performance and in some cases fuel economy. While that may look good on paper, in the real world it isn't the best for long term reliability for such a small engine to be almost constantly under boost powering 4000 lbs. vehicles.
I had a 2019 Tacoma, I traded it for a ‘21 4Runner because I had grown to dislike the 3.5 where I live at 6700 ft. Always had to have the foot into it to get any torque, and always above 3500 rpm. The 4Runner just lugs around at 2k not breaking a sweat compared to the 3.5.
This right here. Made in Japan and you can get full time 4WD with the 4Runner, its the superior vehicle.

I have the exact same Tacoma as in your video now except a 2020 in Super White. We love the power adjustable drivers seat. I'm 5'-11" and my wife is 5'-4". We can both comfortably find a seating position we like. Yes long box is a handful but very practical with a family.
I've gotten used to the computer controlled engine/transmission. My wife and I both love the old school ride and sound of the noisy D-4S engine. Driving this Tacoma brings back so many fond memories of exploring everywhere with our 1992 Truck before kids. We are very please to be back in a Toyota Truck again. We couldn't afford a new 2006 4dr Tacoma when our first kid came along so we opted for a used 2003 Nissan Pathfiner. Served us well for 15 solid years until we wore it out and bought the Tacoma.
Only concerns for me is possible Super White paint peel and the plastic used in some critical engine cooling components. Other than that I hope to keep it for a long time or we can't get gas anymore.
Oh, we were just off road with the TRD Sport 4X4 last week and it was awesome. I did tear my front passenger mud flap off tho. Yes. I like the mud flaps despite being a liability off road. Thanks again for sharing your God given talent.
We have a 2021 toyota 4runner trd off road premium. It is slow it is heavy and not the most comfortable ride, its not that good on gas. However we knew all this when buying it and we do not regret our decision. It is a RELIABLE machine and im still able to do my own basic maintenance. Also its just plain cool to us!

Just purchased a 2022 Tacoma TRD Offroad. I actually kind of stumbled on the truck by sheer chance. The dealer didn't have any available, someone cancelled their order and their truck became available. So instead of waiting months, I waited 12 days! So far I really like the truck. Much better than the Hyundai I owned haha

The tie breaker for me was which one has a good transmission? The Tacoma is the only one still offering a good transmission so I bought myself a manual Tacoma and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I don’t have to deal with the annoying gear hunting and I have full control over my driving. I don’t mind the safety features. All that does is lower my insurance rates lol. Don’t even need to use them! I’ve been wanting a truck for a while and the Tacoma was the only truck out there that had what I needed!

Tacoma doesn't have full time 4WD, only part time 4WD. 4Runner is better.

Had the 2016, the torque is awesome. Traded it for the 2020 double cap, long bed TRD. Love it. Got the KDMAX pro tune. Responce with 93 octane and ECT will make you fall in love with you Tacoma all over again. Thanks for your vids, will be referring to them in the future.
I bought my first Toyota truck in 1976. My next purchase was the first Toyota production 4x4 with a live front axel, 20R engine, and manual tranny/transfer case. My sole after market upgrade was 30” Goodyear wranglers on white spoke wheels. It was a goat! I paid $8,500 originally in 1979 and sold it in 1998 for $2,500 (it was a sad day).
Twenty years later I bought my third Toyota truck, a new 2018 SR5 4x4 and I love it. Intend to drive it until I die (I’m 67 so it’s a reasonable expectation). I’m an avid fly fisherman so this truck (affectionately named “The Fish Taco”) gets me to my remote angling destinations.

Bought a used 2019 Tacoma SR 4x4 Access cab with 58K. When I was considering it, I wasn't really sure it would fit in my garage. The salesman had me drive it home and check to see if it fit. It did, with just a few inches to spare. I bought it because it had high road clearance and four wheel drive so I don't have to worry about removing the snow from my driveway or getting to work in the winter. That it had a CD player and a real key (and no start/stop function) I considered quite a plus!
I just got 26.7 MPG on my 2020 Tacoma Limited on a trip from Victorville Ca to Reno Nv.and back.I've driven Toyota's since 1967 and i love them all.Great videos keep em coming.
I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport with the short bed. It fits in my garage well. I like it because it has a responsive suspension and an excellent turning radius. It has the LED light package, the technology and towing package which I find are very useful. I did install the seat jackers on the passenger front seat so it gives more thigh support. The drivers seat has good bolsters to keep you in the seat when on rough roads, I still have the factory wheels and tires so it has a nice ride. Much better than my 2009 GMC diesel with the Z71 off-road and towing package. I think people experience a rougher ride with the off road TRD package due to suspension, tire and wheel sets. My Tacoma gets 20;plus mpg in town and up to 25mpg on the highway. That is great mileage for any sizable truck. I live in Wyoming and it handles very well in the snow with the factory tires. That said though, I’m getting new snow tires for this winter to go off-roading to hunt and fish. I don’t service my own truck and I love the front grill. I don’t know what my Toyota dealer does about the awesome looking front grill when they service it but that is what I pay them for. Haha. I’m still on the 2 yr service with only 11,000 miles on my truck. I have the oil changed every 5,000 miles. Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them as much as I enjoy my Army Green w/ blackout package, Tacoma. Oh, It’s wheels are unique to the Sport edition and they are the best looking wheels that Toyota uses, in my humble opinion.

A friend has a '13 that won't quit. That got me interested in a '19. I loved it. Except for the seat. I took it in for it's 50,000 km service and the salesman offered me a chance at a '21. I didn't look back! The ONLY thing I don't like about it, is you have to be on level ground to shift into 4L. Other than that, I love this truck and it's probably my last truck. Thank you for all your videos, I've learned a tremendous amount about servicing my Tacoma!
Had a blast with the 2011 Tacoma OR, especially once I installed the TRD Pro suspension. If you can swing a TRD Pro suspension upgrade (which is probably over priced) or otherwise an adjustable suspension from Fox or King or Bilstien, you can have the best of both worlds with a plush ride for bumps and firm-enough handling for on road driving.
Thanks again for putting in all of the time that it takes to create content. When I had to move on from my 2004 Tundra Double Cab LTD TRD with All Weather Package because of frame rot, that my local mechanic wouldn't put on his lift anymore because one broke in half & ruined his lift, I spent 5 weeks researching UA-cam videos convincing myself that the Tacoma SR model 7514C, 2.7L Utility Version, 6' bed, 4×4 would be the best one for me. Mostly from your educated experience & testimony, I drove mine home May 25 & have already put 1,600 miles on it with no regrets. At 73, I've gone from all the "bells & whistles" to no "bells & whistles", but I have economical & reliable transportation & with my continued attention to scheduled preventative maintenance, I'm confident that that cast iron block engine will surpass the Tundra for lifetime mileage. Keep up the great content.

However, I respectfully disagree with your opinion about the transmission, I think the transmission works flawlessly, the problem is the gearing and the lack of engine's torque to move the truck in overdrive. I do agree in the seating position and seats not been the best. It is a very common complaint among users and in reviews. Isn't ironic that Mike Sweers was a principal engineer with a focus primarily in seats and seat belts design back in the 90's. It baffles me, how Mike Sweers can be the Chief Engineer in charge of the Tacomas and Tundras, when can't design a seat or a drive train.
Still running my 2004 TRD PreRunner Tacoma. V6 with the 4 speed automatic transmission, no problems. Has 217k miles and not no plans of getting rid of it! Love it!
Thanks for a great program. Again. I have a 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5. I love it except for the fact that the seats are horrid. Drive it for about 3 hours and you will be limping out of the truck.
Getting in and getting out is also a royal pain. The seats really suck.

True, but overall the Tacoma has everything you need. I owned all 3 pros, tundra was my favorite but the Tacoma is overall the best balance between the 3 (especially in manual). It has 4Runner offroad capabilities, a bed and best MPG of all 3. I have a 16’ enclosed trailer it pulls no problem. (Looks wise it’s my least favorite though)

I bought a 2021 TRD off road DC 4x4 in a automatic trans , with the tech and premium pkg , I absolutely love this truck out here in Az I’m averaging 24mpg highway and about 20 in the city , I do use 91 octane gas because I did see diff in fuel mileage and it livened up the truck a little more than when I was using 87 octane . My family and I have have been on a cross country trip with it and already have 9,000 miles on the clock & the more I drive it the more I like it . This will be my last truck I ever purchase .

I recently purchased a 2021 army green offroad. I like it more and more everytime i drive it. No regrets! Especially when i paid 29k for a fully loaded, salvage title though.

I love my 2020 Tacoma. It’s my second Tacoma (1st was an ‘08 X-runner). The only wish I had in my crew can long bed TRD off-road is a manual transmission.
I bought my 2016 Tacoma Limited 4x4 back in April of 2019, with just under 15K miles on it. I love it and I have put it through it's paces. In 2020/2021, my wife and I moved form SoCal to Southern Utah and we made many trips, pulling a 5x10, enclosed trailer. It really did a great job. Here it is April 2023, and it now has over 70K miles on it. This is not my first Tacoma, but my second. My first was a 2004 4dr, TRD, but not a 4x4. My wife did not like it because it was too rough of a ride for her. Where as my 2016 Limited rides just fine for her. (I call it my Old Man's truck, for the way it rides, compared to my 2004). Also, I might add, that I also had 1988 Toyota std. cab pickup and a 1993 Toyota extra cab pickup. Of course my 2016 has been my favorite.

Thank you for a very informative series. I currently own a 2016 Tacoma & 2019 Tundra 1794 Edition. I am definitely keeping the Tacoma and trading in the Tundra only because of the gas mileage. I am still undecided between the 4 Runner or another Tacoma.

Thank you for the series and advice. I’m a current and new owner of a 2023 Tacoma Sport premium(Canadian version). A few gripes, there is no standardization between the American and Canadian versions, I got the premium package in Canada, hoping I’d have LED lights, parking sensors, JBL audio etc that I’ve seen on US models of similar “package.” I like the truck….yes, handles like a truck, I came from a 2012 RAM 1500 Bighorn, great handling truck, great audio etc. it might have spoiled me lol. I’m warming up to Tacoma, I wanted to down size and a “bit better” gas mileage. I noticed a jerk when partial throttle at around 60 Km/hr, could be fuelling programming, reminds me of my Ducati monster below 3000 rpm, it didn’t like it until I added some O2 emulators that added a straight 13:1 fuel ratio by fooling the ECU to add fuel. Another quick question, I switched to winter wheels and was told I need to get my TPMS reprogrammed every time I switch wheels, I’ve driven it so far and I have not gotten any warning on the dash. I did the reset on pressure reset button. Thanks again!!

Love my toyota tacoma, I had a 2020 and now a 2022. It might not be the most polished and refined truck out there, but it just works and never let me down. I also had a 2021 Ford f150 with the v6 twin turbo and 10 speed transmission which drove like butter, but I missed the smaller and more maneuverable tacoma that made offroading and overlanding a blast.
I just bought mine 6 mos ago ago, I can’t believe what this thing will climb, and just try to get stuck.

I agree about the seats and the seating position.
I believe the seats are too wide for the cab. The center console lid rubs both front seats and rattles non-stop while driving. The rattle drives me crazy!
I do love my truck but I am annoyed by this problem.
The locks on the gas caps rust and seize in salt states. I had to lube mine regularly to keep it free and i noticed the truck a couple years after I sold it had the entire flap removed. This of course was a proper key operated lock.
I would go with the 4runner, why? Because it’s made in Japan.
Plus You can still get The 4.0 V-6 in The 4Runner.

Also depends if you need a pickup truck for the bed…you can’t fill the Forerunner with dirt, rocks, etc.

I like your review. There needs to be more honest reviews like this. I bought a 2021 Tacoma back in May and I hate it. Truly noting to be proud of owning. So many things you pointed out about that are negative I agree but I’ve noticed other things too. Going to get rid of it soon.
I have to be honest. I bought a 2021 taco limited. Just didn't do it for me. Wife demanded it in the divorce and i didn't fight too much. Now I drive a 2011 lexus es350 and will rent a truck if I need one. The taco just kind of felt anemic all the way around. Quality, sure. Just didn't feel right. The lexus, on the other hand, is outstanding. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles but man, do I like this car.

I was planning to get the double cab and long bed, but based on what you mentioned, will do 5’. Wait time now is 6-8 months and it not guaranteed. Have not put deposit down. Will see if KDSS makes it to Tacoma …

I have a 2020 TRD sport 2wd. The power seat does make a big difference. It gets the best V6 gas mileage of any vehicle I’ve owned. I consistently get 22-26mpg highway mileage. I have a K&N intake and a Toyota TRD exhaust. The annoyances are minor. The engine and transmission don’t always communicate with each other well. The Atkinson cycle engine doesn’t deliver power in a linear manner. You can definitely feel a surge of power when the engine goes from Atkinson cycle to Otto cycle. It feels like a prominent turbo lag where the engine feels lazy and then gets this burst of power. The Atkinson cycle accounts for the better fuel economy. It’s a better system than variable cylinder management. In GM and Ram trucks the engines don’t like that system and destroy cams and lifters. It’s a very expensive repair. This is my third Toyota truck. My two previous trucks never required repair, only maintenance. They both went well over 100,000 miles. This truck has 62,000 miles and so far has been very reliable, only needing maintenance which I’m very compulsive about. As you say, take care of your truck and it’ll take care of you!
Since the 4runner is anticipated to be remodeled in 2023, I hope you do a video about if anyone is interested in a 4runner, buy one now or wait for the remodel. I like and prefer low technology cars so I am leaning to buy a 2022 4runner before the model change. Call me crazy?

I like Toyota. I bought my daughter a 2022 Corolla hybrid. I also own a Jeep Wrangler, which has been trouble free. What I don't understand about Toyota's pursuit of perfection though, is why can't they properly galvanize their truck's frames? I understand that the Tacoma and Tundra frames were supplied by Dana Corp that didn't properly rust treat them, but even the 5th generation 4Runners which are assembled in Japan, have frame rust issues? That's the only thing keeping me from buying a Toyota body-on-frame vehicle at the moment.

Had a '21 Tacoma in voodoo blue. It was good around town but seemed floaty on the highway at speed. Rear seats didn't hold enough for our road trips. Great trade in value though; traded it for a Ford F-450 and got nearly full value after a little more than a year and close to 20 K miles. Now the wife has all the room she needs for luggage! 😂 Love our '17 4R ORP with upgraded Bilstein 5100 shocks.
We have owned a 2003, 2013, and a 2020 Tacoma. I had no Complaint about the seats in any of them. My wife liked the seat in the 2003, instantly hated the seat in the 2013 and now likes the seat in the 2020. It’s down to the individual.

I love it. Been thinking about trading it in for a tacoma though. Maybe a trd sport. I dont go off road. Would like it for yard work and to either build a camper or get a popup camper. A lot of people say the 4runner is a more comfortable ride though. Also, the Tacoma is small in the cab. Put 4 people in there and your snughed. Then no room for things and have to be put in the bed.

I had a 2017 TRD Off-Road Tacoma and hated the tranny settings. On any slight uphill road grade, it would drop 2 gears to make it up.
I put in a ShiftSense Pro, and what a lifesaver. Made me love this Taco - except for one thing....
I'm 6' tall, and almost other every day or so, upon entering this Taco, I'd crack my head on the door frame sill.
Fast forward past a bunch of headaches, I brought the Taco in for 24K miles service.
I had to pee, had to walk through the salesroom, and saw a Barcelona Red SR5 "Premium" 4Runner.
Peed, came back out and drove it home.
Since then, I hated how hard I had to hit the accelerator to get this truck to move.
If I mashed it, it would certainly go.
Learned about something called "Pedal Commander", and just like Taco + ShftSense Pro, $Runner and Pedal Commander is awesome.

I had a 2018 TRD pro 4Runner and now own a 2021 Tacoma TRD off road 4x4 in a automatic to me Tacoma is better . 3.91 gears lower 1st gear in trans crawls better , vs the 4Runner 3.73 gears #2 the 2GR-Fks is a 6 bolt main and I do get 15mpg when towing my car behind it which is 5700#’s and 24MPG on the highway #3 the bed of the truck #4 Tacoma TRD off road comes with a 8.75inch ring gear vs 8inch ring gear in the 4Runner . Both are good machines but after owning both I would not go back to the 4Runner but that’s just me .

Your spot on, the power sliding rear window is great, I had a hell of a time getting that on my 2006 F150 back then cause you needed this package in order to get it etc. etc. but if you can have that feature it is really nice. The seats are not so good is being generous, the are out and out uncomfortable, especially compared the F150 I had. But I am getting 21 / 22 in the city and 23 / 24 MPG on the highway so I like that. Being a Toyota I expect quality and hope it will deliver. The only thing I did not like is all the plastic components under the hood but more and more car makers are doing this and it seems like it might be inescapable. The SR5 which is what I got has almost as many features as my F150 Lariat (which is one of the top trim). Thanks for the series, some of your insight in deciding to get it 2021. What an interesring series...I learned quite a bit from your professional knowledge about my TRD OR 4X4...However, listening to an end user from Chicago rave about the Tacoma's talents and abilities is like listening to a fellow co-worker at the Daily Planet rave about what great a colleague 'Clark Kent' is...despite the fact that he is awkward, shy, self-conscious, and clumsy....You see you will never know its true quality until the 'S' hits the fan and the 'S' on the chest of this rig is revealed on the trails and in the wild (it's almost as if Toyota observed the fans of this truck for decades and knew what they did with them and gave them more of what they wanted: Tacomas in California are a dime a dozen...they are basically our State Truck...just saying.) Only then does anything make any sense about this truck....

I don't think the Tacoma or 4runner are better than the other. I think it's what you want and need. Do you want a closed in comfortable SUV or do you need to haul things sometimes you don't want hogging up your nice interior? If so you might prefer a truck. I came from a Jeep Liberty SUV so some family and friends were surprised I wanted a Tacoma. But so far I've found many uses for it. Just today hauling trash from cleaning my mom's house. Hauling camping gear, bikes, mowers and things I'm glad were in the bed not inside.
As far as comfort the 2019 Tacoma i first drove was ok. I liked the more simple dash layout and controls over the Ranger. I liked the build quality and reliability reputation more. I felt like with the SR5 more things and tech that I wanted was standard than on ranger XLT so i was getting a good value. The power seat in the 2020 I ended up in with the Android auto or apple car play feature really put it over the top. Ford sync 3 sucks and is extra money to add. It was my first new vehicle. I saved for 2 years to make to purchase with a big down payment so I researched it well. A year out I'm very happy with the truck.
Get at OTT on your truck. You'll fall back in love with it.

I think depending on your body type, makes a big difference on comfort. I’m 5-10. 200 lbs athletic type and I’ve been in my 2016 Tacoma for almost six years and very comfortable
I have the Tacoma TRD off-road and my Son has the 4Runner TRDPro both are equally awesome. Can’t go wrong with either one just depends on your preference. You are over exaggerating how rough and old school the ride is. The new ones are greatly improved I have driven cross country several times and off-road it is awesome. But I guess you’re a sedan guy.
Complaining about the length is not valid. It is a basic characteristic of the truck or any truck with a "long bed."

I don't think that is valid either. I've owned older, full-size trucks and the Tacoma's ride is nothing like those older trucks. The Tacoma has a soft ride compared to those trucks.
If you want something that does not have a stiff ride, stay away from trucks and sports cars. This is basic knowledge.
Claiming people mostly buy a Tacoma because of its "old schoolness" is a silly statement. People buy Tacomas because they are the most reliable small truck on the market and have been for well over a decade, if not multiple decades. Tacomas are also great offroad.
People buy Tacomas because the price, acceleration, bed size, interior room, gas mileage...are comparable to other vehicles in the segment and the Tacoma is much more reliable that those other vehicles.
