Removing the whole auger assembly helps eliminate the aggravation of the hard to reach nuts, plus accesses the bearings which is also a wear item that should be inspected.

I have been using the molded urethane ones they sell on fleebay. They are red or black in color and solid one piece, not laminated. They seem to last longer and I use mine on concrete and an unpaved driveway. I also remove the center brackets from the shaft and put them back on last. It allows more freedom in getting the end bolts in place. Deep throated vise grips also come in handy. I also drill out the holes so I am not fighting that as well as trying to get a nut on the short thread length.

The silicon and needle nose vice grips were like a religious experience. I’ve fought those nuts for years until I tried your method. It’s like the heavens opened and the snow parted.

eBay offers knock-off paddle kits including the fasteners. The paddle retention fasteners are straight 1/4" shanked and do not have the stepped shank that the OEM fasteners do. They also include additional spacers to be pressed into the paddle holes and eliminate the clearance between the paddle and the fastener shank.
This maximizes the threaded protrusion with the fastener and installation is easy. I tried Dow #4 on the stepped shank and found that the fasteners kept popping out during installation. I'm going to buy the kit with the straight shanked fasteners and the additional spacers next time. The cost difference was negligible
The needle nosed vice grips, however, are a winner and make the end location installation easy.

For the hard to hold nut you mentioned look at wera wrenches. On the open end they have a small plate which holds the nut in place and makes this job 100% easier. I believe you would need the 7/16 size. Hope this helps.

Very helpful info! I tried the clip on type with the magnet that fits any brand wrench, and it wasn't really useful for me. Sounds like the Wera may be worth a look. Thanks for the contribution!

@@rebel390 The wrench is called joker by wera.

Hi will! We make these paddles, and I make our screw holes about .002 larger so they are a bit easier to install. Let me know if you ever need any for your machine! Great Video. Thank you

      Hi, Jason,
How much do you charge for a pair of paddles and where are you located? Thank you

Nice video. Those end nuts are pesky. I just put duct tape on the back end of a box end wrench. I bet your idea works better! Thanks

Try the commercial paddles, they last longer and throw better.

Not sure how these only last you a few snowfalls. I have a Toro CCR2450 with oem paddles and they're lasting forever. still even have the wear indicator..

It all depends on the surface. New concrete is the worst.

i got a couple customers with natural stone walkways and uneven pavers ect, I get 1 winter out of them! Not exactly what I'd call "commercial" quality or durability on my 821... Not at 220 bucks a set of paddles!

    • @rebel390

Ouch! $220 sounds way high. Well, I wish these things lasted like 5 years, but I dare to dream!! The previous technology that used the rubber paddles only to throw the snow and not do double duty of also propelling the frame, now those paddles lasted way longer. Harder effort while using the machine though. Well, we keep chugging along!
