I am happy you got a nice bike and are putting in the work to get it going. Be very carefull about were you leave it. My brother gave me a old 85 Honda Shadow 750 and it needed a lot of work to it. I spent over a grand to fix it up and rode it one time. The next day after I got home my bike was gone. Some one stole it and it has never been found and its been 13 years so I will never see it again. Get insurance as soon as you can because I was a day late on getting mine.
You just reminded me about an idiosyncrasy that bike had from the factory . About every 6 months I would blow a main fuse ( pushed it a long way home the first time ) Keep an eye out for that . And in regards to the old carb boots ,...you can use Vaseline on them for small cracks just to make it run without leaking and I've seen people use silicone . Neither are permanent but both will make it run correctly
First off that was a sweet deal you got on that bike $100 for it was well worth the money. So did you manage to sort it out get it running, it didn't seem to need much doing to it. Looking at your video of the carbs you probably could have gotten away without buying a servicing kit, and would have been better off fitting an inline filter checking and cleaning out the carbs plus inspecting the diaphragms. The clutch looked as though it was either fitted wrong or judging by you being able to twist the small lever that something was a miss inside perhaps the push rod was missing or something. But a sweet deal on that bike.
What's wrong with the fuse box is it's been afro engineered. You need to replace that and check to see if the front forks are bent. You need a drift punch to take the float pins out.
So..what ever happened with the bike? I had one years ago I bought off a co-worker for $50. Had been sitting in his backyard...tree growing up through it . Eventually sold it for 2k. Still kinda wish I hadn't. Great bikes.
Most expensive thing on them bikes is the CDIs and carb boots..and not sure how far along you are but buy a jet kit and rejet that bike at least one size over jetkit.com
I have some hard learned advice for you, new and NOS XJ parts are getting hard to find and the people who do have them think they are worth a fortune so if you do find a good deal on a part don't assume there will be another deal down the road because there won't be so snag it when you have the chance and for wear items like brake parts and clutch parts, starter brush plate, cables, ect. if find a good deal buy them whether you need them right then or not. there is a place in florida right now that has new XJ cables dirt cheap, i just got a clutch, speedo, and throttle for about $35 which is less then some want for a single used cable, also hopefully you got an Xj with the YICS motor, know that some of the engine parts are different from the non-YICS bikes, right now there is a flood of dirt cheap aftermarket intake boots for the YICS engine, i'm talking a full set for under $20 delivered, they work ok and the only real problem with them is the vacuum port tubes are just shoved in the hole and pull the first time you use them,. don't be afraid to buy a set, jsut if you do before you install pickup a pack of 5 min jb weld and epoxy the tubes in and a tube of Permatex 29132 fuel resistant grey RTV to seal the boots to the head. lastly if you need a copy of the repair manual let me know and i'll email you a copy so you don't have to buy one, hope this helps.....
a pdf copy of xj650 manual? if your comfortable with putting your email here in a reply i'll send it to you but i'm having trouble with youtube notifications so if i don't respond within 24 hrs send another message

This bike's are supper easy to work on.
I bet that guy that replaced the clutch cover dropped/lost the push rod or ball that are typically in there to engage the clutch arm
I'm rooting for you! Any progress since May 2018?
I moved it to a new storage unit, haha. looking to make some progress soon hopefully before May 2019 :)
