    Quick tip for all motorcycle riders.
    The first time you have to dig your battery out of the bike, take some extra time to run a couple heavy gage wires from the battery to a closed compartment, like that trunk on your bike. Terminate them with wire nuts.
    Next time your battery dies you now have a place to hook up a charger, or if you get stranded you can hook up jumper cables.

  • @lrstaf6
    @lrstaf6 6 років тому +28

    You can jump it with a car battery, but leave the car engine off. A car battery has much more endurance and will give you a much better chance of a start on a stored bike. However; a car alternator puts out too much power for the fuses in your bike, so don't have the car running. Jets are plugged in the carbs, you need to clean them for it to run right. Appreciate your sharing this video with us.

    Oooooh man !!!
    That was my first big bike back in 1985 and I didn't know what I had .
    I bought it used for $1,300 in Louisiana and in 1986 I moved to the high desert in California .
    There were weekend drags in the middle of nowhere . Here's the thing that I didn't know . That is one of the QUICKEST bikes in it's class for that period . It only tops out at 115 but it gets there quick !!!!! I blew away any takers from 500 cc too 900 ccs for the most part ( a couple special bikes got me but they had to be special like the Suzuki 305 two stroke that smoked me the worst ) . If you nail it and speed shift at redline it shifts into 6th right at 1/4 mile .
    It's a mean bike !!!
    I would ride wheelies 1st thru 4th and took it out INTO the desert and jumped it and climbed hills that I wouldn't touch on my dirt bike .
    When I sold it I sold it because it quit scaring me . The header was Smashed at the bottom , all places that could leak were leaking ( except the gas tank ) .
    I sold it for $100.00 and a year later spotted it at a swap meet and the guy who had it was trying to sell it to me for $1,500 lol .
    All of the leaks we're fixed but I knew it was my bike because an ant got trapped in the speedo glass and died in Louisiana .
    I don't know if you still have this machine yet I want you to know it's very special thanks to the 6 speed tranny .
    I've probably had 40 motorcycles since then and I honestly liked that better than my old KZ 750 , yet probably not as much as my current Shadow Aero 750 even though that bike will blow my bikes doors off .
    Thanks for the memories

    Hey mate that back wheel spinning isn't an issue. It's just the nature of multiplate clutches. You'll be able to stop the rear tire with your hand, there's no torque going through it.

    • @wirenutt57
      @wirenutt57 6 років тому +3

      No, actually, you're thinking about the situation if the bike is in gear and you release the clutch, by squeezing the clutch lever. Right now the clutch is fully engaged, and the wheel turning was just the gears in neutral spinning on their shafts with a tiny bit of friction making the output sprocket turn. And you are right about no torque going to the wheel, he stopped it with his hand with almost no effort. I am far more concerned about the clutch release lever on the case. That lever goes inside and pushes against the clutch springs to release it. Unless he gets that working properly, there will be no riding it. That cover has to come off.

    Hey, just wanted you to know, I believe your new bike has a wet clutch. The wheel turning while in neutral is normal for a wet clutch. I know because I also thought something was wrong with my bike when I first saw that. If you can stop it with your hand or foot easily, then it is normal. And you know you have oil in the motor. And since it is a motorcycle, it always needs changed!

      In this case .... yes! A motorcycle has an generator too so if it runs it will send out energy... fine you spared a few bucks for having a propper cable on hand, but some cars really didnt like these kind of inputs or the flimsy cable make nice melting marks on your paint.
      Why are you doing so complicated? To get to the fuelline, just release the tankmount and you can acess the area easily. Next time getyourself a spare car battery even a midly beaten up one will have the power to crank the bike.
      Happy working and ride safe

    I've got a GXS750F with the same cable problem, mine had been covered, but there was a hole in the cover, water had got in and ran down the inner cable and rusted. I took it off, soaked it in the old fule and pulled it through a few times. The XS in any form is an excellent bike to work on, i think you will have some fun.

    Sounds like your carbs are going need a good clean. If it won't rev then could be the main jet is plugged. If it only idles on choke then it might be that the idle jet is also plugged. Get some carb cleaner and some beer, and snake some wire through the jets until you can see light. Make sure the tank is clean. Maybe install a secondary fuel filter before the carbs to be sure. The rear wheel spin is normal on a wet clutch bike. You should replace the oil as well and might as well check the clutch plates were done correctly while you have the oil drained.

    • @joesjunkcars6328
      @joesjunkcars6328  6 років тому

      Awesome! Thanks for the advice! Your right checking the clutch is probably a good idea.

    • @mechanicalcanvas
      @mechanicalcanvas 6 років тому +4

      Avoid snaking wire through your jets. Jets are made of brass and depending on how you man-handle that process you could create scratches or gouges which will affect how that jet performs. Simply hitting them with carb cleaner and compressed air should suffice or at worst case, fill the float bowl with carb cleaner, remove the jets from the carb, and soak them in the float bowl. If nothing works to free the obstruction, jets are extremely cheap, just replace them.

      Also, the fact that the carbs were leaking when the petcock was set to "prime" indicates that you probably have a leaky float needle valve. Since you'll be cleaning/rebuilding the carbs anyway, you'll hopefully be killing two birds with one stone.

    Out in the middle of nowhere this guy was stranded with a dead battery. They had left the radio on while they fished. He asked me for a jump. I didn't have cables but I did have bailing wire. So I ran the wire to his battery from mine because he had side post and I had top post. 30 minutes later he started his car and thanked me. I could see when I went to hook them up hat he didn't think it would work but I knew it would.
    My philosophy is, I'm never stranded, just delayed. Some time you just have to work with what you got.

    When you're trying to start a bike that's been stored that long, you should do all that's necessary to get a normal start including checking the spark plugs, clean and adjust carbs, dump the old crankcase oil, etc. and DON't burn up the starter motor by continually trying to get it to start when it needs work. New starters ain't cheap.

    I would say you got one heck of a good deal, I would buy any bike that is all together running or not for 100.00 any day of the week. Easy fix on the clutch, just lube it to get it to return or get the right one that will adjust out that is the correct length, clean the carbs and check the chain tensioner and run a compression test to make sure the valves are seating and go for a ride, or just send it cross country. The first thing I would do is to drain all the old fuel out of the tank and clean the carbs. There might be an automatic vacuum switch for the gas valve as well as the pet cock that might have a fuel filter in it as well that might need cleaning. Also please watch your language so that more people will like to subscribe to your channel. You should have a reserve, on and off section for the petcock valve. The starter should not be run over four or five second intervals or you can burn it up. The original owner said he could get it to idle just would not run on all the cylinders. That thing is not running on all cylinders and carbs are not right and will not be until cleaned properly. You're wasting your time thinking it will clear itself up. Trust me if it was in gear the safety switches would not allow you to start it to begin with. Plus that rear tire would be spinning real fast.

  • @bigred8438
    @bigred8438 5 років тому

    With my years of experience, I just wanted to call out to you and say, Unbolt the tank and give your self some room, get needle nose pliers onto that fuel line, get the spark plugs out and see what they are like ...and do you have spark on spark plugs, what condition is the petrol in, put petrol down the spark plug holes to get a bite out of it etc and etc. But I can see you are starting out on that journey of discovery, and when I was young I had to muddle through to as I did not have a mechanically minded father. good luck with it.
    For what it is worth your set up with the car battery seemed ok except those wires wouldn't probably carry much current, but it did the job.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 5 років тому

      Big Red the small jumper wires kept it from carrying too much current. That saved his fuses, starter and harness. Inadvertent good thing.
      Yeah at 50+ I would walk through it piece by piece: power, spark, clean fuel, clean hoses, dump carb bowls, air. If I was 18 I'd just jump in like this, as I did at 14. Kinda nostalgic.

    Runs on choke wont run with choke off... Jets are clogged. Common issue with motorcycles that have not been used for a while. Sometimes it's as simple as blowing them out with some carb cleaner but sometimes they are too far gone and a replacement is needed. Replacing them is not too hard.

It was their way to avoid the performance difference between the idle jet and main jet before FI was a thing, but essentially giving you 1.5 carbs on one cylinder. I'm not sure if they only used it on their single cylinders (my '88 XT600 has it), or if it bled over to their others as well.
      There can be some issues with working on them due to their differences/ complexities between them and more normal carbs.

    The term “brand new” implies that it’s new straight from the brand lol, that’s a used 1982 Yamaha, it’s not brand new anymore my guy even if it is new to you.
