Use a hi-lift jack or a cable/rope around the base of them strung over an old tire on a rim or just the rim and pull slowly with tractor or vehicle. The trick is to pull them straight up. Engine hoist works too. Pulley on a tripod too.

I love doing doing diy projects, and I've been building a custom carport for a bit now, had it done, was gonna do so little things to improve it, but had a crazy storm the other night and one of the 2 sections collapsed, do you have any tips or knowledge that may help out?
I would use pressure treated wood, exterior lag structural screws, and galvanized hurricane straps. All these can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you don’t use exterior structural screws, it might hold for a while but will eventually rust and snap. Same with non treated wood, it will weather and become weak. The biggest tip might be the hurricane straps. This should reduce twisting. Also, what I don’t have on my carport are angle brackets. This might also reduce twisting. Hope this helps. Subscribe for more diy videos.
Thanks brotha! That helps tremendously and I looked at the damage from the storm, it actually snapped a single 2x4 in 3 different sections and hence why one part of the carport failed
You have my favorite Mustang model, I had a 1971 fastback non Mach 1 with 302 2 barrel which was my mom's first car and later became my first car. Yours is either 69 or 70 , can't really tell ,but I think 69 had the scoops on the side, I could be wrong.
I'm pretty sure those "lag bolts" were actually interior cabinet screws....the come in a clear container that's kind of rectangular with a slanted bottom edge and are made by GRK or something like it.....I'm curious to know how well they're holding up as of today, I've always thought they had a lot more strength than for just cabinets
At 2:26 when the camera raises up and you point at the 2x4s... At 3:05 you get a good close look at them... The ones you showed later on that have a nuts and washer on the end of them are lag bolts for sure.
@@christophermhudson09 I think you are pointing out the outdoor screws I used to hold the 2x6’s in place before I used the lag bolts. The 2x4’a also had the outdoor screws put through them, however, they are not structure screws and one did snap when I ran into it with the lawn mower.
Urgent! Hi and how are you doing today? Urgent! I need to make something like that for my big 5th wheel camper and am wondering how I make it like yours except twice as wide and three times as long and twice as tall cause my camper is 36 feet long and has two slide outs and is probably at most 13.5 feet tall but I have not measured the height yet. Any advice on what materials to buy and where to buy? I'm waiting for your reply. Thank you!
Something that tall you would need to hire a contractor or buy a 5th wheel camper metal carport. You would want 6x6x20 or 8x8x20 vertical timbers for starters. Honestly, I don’t think that’s a feasible diy project. All that weight, plus the roofing, I wouldn’t attempt that project without an engineer or contractor.

Still Iraise I perceive this to be doable only if the ground is relatively level and solid (or concrete/asphalt). If I had a concrete slab I’d definitely at least attempt this. Maybe another you tuber could. Best of luck. Subscribe for more diy videos!
Hey, the load on these lag bolts indicate they should be able to withstand the weight; however, we don’t get snow here in North Carolina very much if at all so I could not say for sure. @@kitt28 I’m not sure if your subscribed but if you do, you can see a notification if I’ve uploaded the video your interested in!!
Can we get a 1 year update on this? How is it still holding up?
Sure can. I actually just bought some tin roofing for it and should be able to update within a month or so. I have a couple projects I’m posting before the carport update. Stay tuned and consider subscribing! I just hit my 1k sub mark!!
how is the carport holding up? did those stakes ever come out?
The carport is holding strong. The tarp ripped so you should figure out metal roofing or something other than a tarp. The stakes never came out.
@@CottoDIY if you tug on the 4x4 does it move or is it strong and steady? I hope you don't mind my questions
@@kitt28 I don’t mind. The structure is solid. If you pull from the top of the post, there is some slight wiggle, but if you added a front and back brace, as the sides are braced, there would be even less wiggle. Or you could add some corner braces-also, having a roof installed would sure up the structure slot more but I haven’t gotten around to that.
@@CottoDIY if you plain on doing an update please upload a video, plus have you got a hurricane? and how did you attach the top 2x4s? Im going add concrete to my carport when i build it might be a bad idea or probably would work.
@@kitt28 We
Have had a hurricane with it, but with no roof attached, it has not been tested. I attached the 2x4’s with hurricane straps found in the building materials section of Lowe’s.
1972 mustang YES
creative is what I found it. Im like you, i will not spend thousands. How long did it last?
The wood structure is still standing. The tarp ripped in a hurricane. Planning on adding a metal roof to it. Subscribe for more diy videos!
Pretty darn cool
Thanks for subscribing!
Dude, that is sweet!!!
Thanks buddy. I do have an update video and I put a metal roof on top of it! Check it out on my channel.
Run some ratchet straps under the tarp. To keep it from sagging
I didn’t think of that. Had a hurricane rip off the tarp, trying to figure out a new roof.
@@CottoDIY local used tin
How well has it held up I’m looking into building one similar but I’m closing mine up like a actual shop kinda
It’s held up fine except the tarp ripped in a hurricane. I hope to build a roof for it eventually.
@@CottoDIY as soon as this "blizzard" to pass in Louisiana so i can get everything prepared to build
Great job bro.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing
Its absolutely horrible what is being sold by themain companies. Such overpriced junk. None of it is recommended. This is the way to go. Plus options.
Get the price now 😢
😂 Listen to those lumber prices!
I know right lol stuff is so expensive now
Great job Isaiah 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👊🏼
Zenaida Lugo 🙏🏻 thanks 😊
How long has the carport lasted you?
It’s still standing today. I installed a metal roof on it a little while ago. Check out the video I uploaded on my channel!
Is that A javelin or an AMX.?
If your referring to the red car with the black hood, it’s a 75 mustang Fastback
How long did it last?
Probably not very long, that tarp would have deteriorated in the sunlight. Not meant for a permanent install like that. Tarps are meant to be used and put away.
Hello from Germany :-)
Looks very Interesting .
Hello there, Thanks!
@@CottoDIY I'm currently restoring my 15 year old carport. Sanding and and ... my new roof cost 500 €. Hail and tornado for sure I want to hope. The Weather is Extremely here many Times.

What’s the length of the post’s?
They are 4x4x8. With these stakes, they don’t enter the ground which is why the building is taller.
First time ever, that anyone has asked me if i find their video Disturbing... LMAO 🤣
i see your mustang mach-1? Do you sell?
I actually sold that mustang already.
Can it handle hail
Thanks for watching! No it cannot handle hail. The tarp roof ripped during a hurricane last year, someone mentioned poking holes to allow rain water through. I’m looking for an alternative roof
now, maybe metal. Subscribe for updates or more diy videos.
@@CottoDIY on, thank you!! Perhaps a stronger tarp??
@@bbikermama possibly with a stronger tarp and a steeper pitch?!
How much did it run you for wverything
I put the cost breakdown In the description; however, the price has definitely fluctuated because of Covid.
How about a movable carport on wheels? There is no videos on this
Still Iraise I perceive this to be doable only if the ground is relatively level and solid (or concrete/asphalt). I can picture some all terrain tires if you were to move this across dirt; however, if there was mud, I’d imagine the sheer weight would have the tire (or all the tires), sink. If I had a concrete slab I’d definitely at least attempt this. Maybe another you tuber could. Best of luck. Subscribe for more diy videos!

will this be strong enough to hold snow?
Hey, the load on these lag bolts indicate they should be able to withstand the weight; however, we don’t get snow here in North Carolina very much if at all so I could not say for sure. Definitely not with a tarp roof, that much I do know. My tarp roof gave way through the last hurricane so now I’m looking into a metal roof.
@@CottoDIY Can you use shingles instead of metal for the roof ?.
@@72Dexter72Manley72 I do not see why not. Just make sure your structural lags are strong enough and you should be good.
@@CottoDIY I just see everyone putting metal roofs on sheds and carports and tiny homes.
I grew up in Maryland where it snows and homes and sheds had shingles. I think shingles are cheaper also. Quieter inside the structure if it's raining or limbs hit it. 👍🏽
@@72Dexter72Manley72 we used corrugated pvc roofing. They are inexpensive at least here in the UK. They’ve stood the test of time, through snow and rain. Typical British weather if you like 👍🏼
i have looked every where and i can not find those 4x4x8 post stakes
that you are using, can you help!
Try ordering them on the Lowe’s or homedepot website and shipping them to a store near you. www.lowes.com/pd/Simpson-Strong-Tie-4-in-x-4-in-Powder-Coated-Wood-to-Wood-Base/1002708416?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-hdw-_-google-_-lia-_-213-_-framinghardware-_-1002708416-_-0&placeholder=null&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxNT8BRD9ARIsAJ8S5xZ5LCBZHESrKwaYJrzBNTmWPct216pZ-PSCjSeMbvhLRSAegY5HA7oaAgbUEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
If your in the great lakes Menards has them but they are for fences, and even for that they are pretty problematic.
nice video
Thanks for subscribing!
Hey man great video! I was wondering if your carport moved or tilted in any way during the hurricane or was it not even a problem? Thanks
This structure did not have any issues with twisting or slanting after a few hurricanes. I have not added metal roofing yet. Will update when I get around to that project.
Try black mesh sunscreen, not waterproof, water passes through fabric. It will keep.mos tof the sun off.
Excuse, Can those four posts be directly inserted into the soil without a post stakes? would it be easier?
You an insert them right into the ground except you would need to set them in concrete or that expanding post foam. Otherwise, I fear it wouldn’t be stable.
What size lag bolts did you use? Roughly how many?
I used 2 for each post so that’s 8 lag bolts. If I remember correctly they were 4” or 6” lag bolts with t30 torx head. I bought them from lowes.
How much it all costs you
Check the description for the break down of cost.
The tarp is very temporary. I was wondering how 3/4 would hold up
What is 3/4?
3/4 plywood. And it's way to heavy for this build would need much more bracing
What are the dimensions of your carport??
Sergio Valdez 12’wide, 16’ long, and 8’ tall. Don’t forget to subscribe!
One year later is it still holding up? Looks not so great for longevity
Looks can be deceiving. Still standing strong. Ask again in a few years and I’ll let you know how it’s doing.
@@CottoDIY thanks man. I more meant the tarp on the roof for longevity. The rest looked solid. I’m looking to build something like this to work on my Motorcycle under
@@ablaze3717 oh, the tarp is a no go. Go with metal or plastic if you can. The tarp ripped because of water buildup and then it tore up in a hurricane.
@@CottoDIY that’s what I figured. Anytime I used tarp it was temporary cuz the water build up. But I’m gonna go with metal I can get from work for the roof…. I’ve built 3-4 quick carports and additions to sheds but they ALWAYS have roof issues. Ive used tar Paper twice over sheeting and then used rolled roofing for the last two. Thanks for the input mate
