I love how you solve problems. From working alone to the foresight of installing the conduit in the concrete slab. And then the punch line at the end with the brolly😂. A thoroughly enjoyable watch on a sunday morning. 👌🏻
Tip for working at low heights for an extended period: use a platform. You can use more than one, or use some boards to extend between two. Massive reduction in going up and down. Your knees will thank you by louvre 3.
That suits the house really well and it's a good price too. I erected a wooden 3x3m Gazeebo a couple of years ago and it cost £1500 and a lot more work. The only thing that would stop me fitting one like that would be the racket when it rains, Like a tin roof and the worry of the mechanism failing due to water ingress over time.
Interested in one of these, so can leave cushions out and have a seating space outdoors when it is raining - a very common problem in Glasgow. Anybody know how dry it stays under those louvres... the Range website says the water runs off and down the columns?!
I had to rewind a few times when you said "The Range" and "£2000"! I didn't even know they sold anything in that price range. Nearly spat my tea out, although based on some comments it seems like good value. Another great video
He was at the NEC Birmingham last weekend. He even chaired a very interesting QandA session with a group of other UA-cam makers. I will also just add. If you think he’s a nice guy with a good sense of humour in these videos, wait till you meet him IRL at one of these shows. He’s a perfect gent and the humour is totally natural. Didn’t even mind when I asked what some people might think is a personal question. Top bloke and his wife and daughter are lovely too. I now wear my PD cap with pride when I have a nice well earned (sometimes) cuppa in my PD mug.👍
Great video! For anyone reading this, remember to check local codes before you do something similar. In some areas, as soon as a "building" is technically "attached" to the house, it may suddenly require a building permit from the city.
This is spot on man, I'm pretty sure my mother ordered the same one which comes mid June which she wants me to put up. She has the heaters and all that stuff too, this vid will help alot cheers.
Came across this video by accident but what a find. Very clear, well thought through. I have a similar 3x3 pergola & put it together single handed too, had similar approach to you but some of your gadgets would have made it easier for me. I’ve not committed to bolting mine down yet but strongly recommend, these aluminium frames are so light, mine is currently held down by piles of block paving on each leg (not the best look) and I’ve never noticed before how often we have such strong winds. Plan to bolt down like yours but I would also recommend attaching to the house like you did (not possible for my situation), in high winds there is a fair bit of flex (and creaking) on the corner joints. Really useful video for anyone considering similar.
I really enjoy all of your vids Stuart, but this one was most enjoyable. Its great how you really think outside the box so to speak to achieve your goal, like the extra slabbing stones and attaching the pergola to the house. It looks great too.
Extending the patio makes it aesthetically seamless with the house, like it was meant to be there. As always, an attention to detail with no corners being cut, a great job! Just as admirable is doing the whole job by yourself, when 1 or 2 extra pairs of hands would've made life much easier!
Good addition to the property. Great vid as always. Particularly so, as you’ve answered exactly the very question I had in mind on how to secure pergola posts effectively to concrete patio for the pergola I am about to assemble. Marvellous timing.
Only recently discovered your channel, and have found it really useful! Thank you for the videos and for explaining things in plain English! Those little wheel dollies look really handy!!
Wow! You are so gifted at DIY. Love watching you. I fancy one of these myself but 3x3M and it won’t be attached to any side wall. I assume 4 bolts in each leg will keep it sturdy.
I have this pergola. I would love to know how stable yours is in the wind. Is it noisy. I haven't attached mine to the house, but looking at the way you've done yours I'm tempted to move mine closer to the house.
You might need to insulate the aluminum and galvanized bracket so so don’t get galvanic corrosion especially in high humidity. Also in England do you guys ever use some sort of flashing or waterproofing between the wood connectors and your home? Water would seem to get behind that wood and cause damage. Loved the video and I thought the pergola with opening Louvers was really neat!!
This looks absolutely amazing! I love how you always explain challenges and how to tackle them. Can I ask, is there now a gap between the patio doors and the pergola?
Hi Stuart it was good to meet ya last week at Makers Central we had a quick chat about the secure door from lathems that you fitted and you gave me one of your Ive met DP Badges enjoy your sunday and keep the videos coming.
Well done Stuart for an exceptionally creative video. Great choice of music and of course it wouldn’t be you without the humour. I guess this is what you’ve been up to for the last 2 weeks. All in all a big project. Loved it.
brilliant, loved the fabricated chock to fix to structure, i use resin anchors but will try those metal sleeved ones as looked really simple with the wrench
Just checked out the item on The Range website - it says it's not suitable for permanent installation & that the louvres drain rainwater through the legs. What did you do with regard to drainage?
Nice video Stuart. Smart addition to the property. I wonder about the oak tie-downs and if they wouldn't be better of with some sort of a pitch to shed water? Take care & stay safe.
It's a fantastic looking job there I'm thinking of changing my mind from timber pergola to aluminum one now timber in Ireland is so expensive and quality isn't in timber anymore so thanks great video
Very nice Stuart, now pour yourself a nice drink and enjoy the summer, not forgetting to make some more great videos of course ! I built a wooden one 4.8 x 2.4, about ten years ago, I still like it apart from when I need to repaint it all, which is now for the fourth time !
Excellent as always Stuart , I feel your pain as I’m a tradesman and always work alone which can be a lot harder with many jobs 👍 I used your method to revitalise my lawn, cut, scarify, re-seed and a layer of multi purpose compost the day after I saw your video. My lawn already looks far better than it has for five years, thank you. Also ridiculous as it sounds I’d already planned to build a modern pagoda ( though from scratch with timber ) I love how you put in the extra effort to improve the products you use and your forward thinking. Thank you Stuart, love your channel’s 👍👍
Fantastic job Stuart! We’re looking to extend our current patio a bit and put up a pergola, and got quoted £7k just for the patio 🤦♂️, these videos definitely help and we’re hoping to do it by ourselves! 💪
Quality video as usual. Literally just taken delivery this morning of a 3x3m titan pergola which I’m looking forward to building next weekend. Great job.
The powder coated aluminium looks great Stuart…. And zero maintenance 😃. I used a very similar system to build a 5m x 3m carport on the side of the house…. You definitely need a helper! Loving your drone videography …. adds a superb professional edge to your vid…. Brilliant 👍👍
Hi Stuart , thanks for another great video especially based around an off the shelf assembly , question does the rainwater from the closed louvres drain to a channel and then down the inside of a post leg to take the water away ?
That looks absolutely fantastic mate! Very timely too as I am thinking of buying one haha Edit: just been on the website but theres a disclaimer….”The pergola cannot be permanently staked. This is a temporary structure and not suitable for long-term or permanent use.” Really?
That looks great, I only I did notice that may be of concern was the winder arm for the roof flaps. Is there enough clearance next to the house? It looked really close
Haha brilliant. I'm looking for getting one but made of wood and those insulating plastic boards. They let trough some light and don't let trough rain so I can also use it in winter to barbeque.
Excellent work, I am drawn to this style myself but have so many questions including durability/maintenance of the mechanism over time and stability of the foot fixings if you haven't got a wall nearby to stabilise the structure. Time will tell I guess.
My wife has bought a pergola , and I said to her, is it higher than the outward opening French doors, she said WHAT no idea, so I did laugh when you mentioned that,
That's a lovely pergola , always wondered how they put those things up, well done on a brilliant job, really suits your house ,thanks for another interesting ,informative video ❤️
I once was employed by a shop that sold these. We would repeated tell customers they must be secured down very well and that we would not replace any pergola that was damaged from wind. Invariably, once or twice a season someone would show up with a pile of wreckage looking for a refund. Customers would buy them for a party, throw them together and put them in their garden, and forget about them until they flew into their neighbor's window.
This guys attention to detail is top notch h. No corners cut and pride taken in the work. Well done that man
A perfect example of how a great idea always seems to turn into a much bigger job than first anticipated. Nice one Stuart.
And the other half will always think you are dragging your feet
Forgot to mention my 2 puppy spaniels next to me as well 😂 Sunday bliss 😊
@@shadowdugify 😂Yep, & just try getter the other half to lend a hand! No chance.

Stu - I loved that transition of the drone plan view to the printed out piece of paper - superb editing!

Interesting. I'm thinking of building a pergola on my patio and thought the Aluminium one seemed expensive, but maybe not
Stuart. How and where does the rain water drain away when the Louvres are closed?
Exactly what I was thinking 🤔

@@ajdthomson7719:42 the floor is completely wet
Would you be concerned about the posts tethered to the patio slabs? Could strong winds pull them up? Love the results.
I had to rewind a few times when you said "The Range" and "£2000"! I didn't even know they sold anything in that price range. Nearly spat my tea out, although based on some comments it seems like good value. Another great video
You can’t beat sitting in the garden on a Sunday morning with a coffee and a new proper diy video. Missed you last two weeks. Holiday???

Oh Stuart! I love the efforts you go to to provide us with Sunday morning vids. Thank you!!
Did you go to the hassle of building the concrete pads in the stone only to not bother putting bolts on the back side anyway?
Absolutely superb job. You attention to detail and planning really are very impressive.

We also have the pull down blind on one side which is great for blocking sunlight out when it's needed.
Looks very neat. Great job. Brilliant snippets of advice too. Love it.
Only recently discovered your channel, and have found it really useful! Thank you for the videos and for explaining things in plain English!
Those little wheel dollies look really handy!!
Question.. when the louvres are in the closed position and when it rains does it leak if not where does the rain water go.? Thanks.
If it's the same as mine the water drains into internal gutters along the each side and then down one of the legs onto the ground.
@rumanuu thanks for that.. 👍
I’m just weighing up doing this exact job at the moment, so this guide was very helpful!
Wow! You are so gifted at DIY. Love watching you. I fancy one of these myself but 3x3M and it won’t be attached to any side wall. I assume 4 bolts in each leg will keep it sturdy.

I just love your channel which is full of helpful advice and terrific humour thrown in as well! Thank you

Just checked out the item on The Range website - it says it's not suitable for permanent installation & that the louvres drain rainwater through the legs. What did you do with regard to drainage?
Not a vast amount of water , it can just drain down the legs and into the surrounding ground ,
Hi Stuart, where did you get the pergola from? It looks good quality!
You did well doing the job on your own Stuart, looks really smart.👍👍
great video! I need to do the same in my garden but my current paving slabs are uneven as hell so Im going to build a patio first.
Nice video Stuart. Smart addition to the property. I wonder about the oak tie-downs and if they wouldn't be better of with some sort of a pitch to shed water? Take care & stay safe.

I was wondering that too

Another great job Stuart, great forward thinking with the conduit through the concrete 👏
Super tidy job. Looks great.
Really great video. Everything you do, you do so well. Very inspiring.
Nice job... just a quickie .. could you have used the brackets from square black downpipe guttering to secure to the wall !!! Just a thought.
Hi Stuart , thanks for another great video especially based around an off the shelf assembly , question does the rainwater from the closed louvres drain to a channel and then down the inside of a post leg to take the water away ?

Seems a bit of a cop out doesn’t it. Do they really expect people to take it down each season?
This channel just gets better and better 👍
Your pergola looks great; nicely done!
Where does the rainwater go from the louvres when they're closed? Is there a drainage channel down any of the supports?
Great job, considering one myself. When the louvres are closed do they shelter you from rain, or just provide shade?
Brilliant project
Love the baton attention to detail 👍
I saw this in the range and was considering the purchase too. Great video and things to consider with attaching to the house etc
I looked at the same one on the range on line?. And it says it’s not to be used as a permanent fixture🤷♂️
That looks great, I only I did notice that may be of concern was the winder arm for the roof flaps. Is there enough clearance next to the house? It looked really close
Great video and tips, I might try this myself.
i used threaded bar through fence posts to stop wobble.covered by plastic tubing.
Haha brilliant. I'm looking for getting one but made of wood and those insulating plastic boards. They let trough some light and don't let trough rain so I can also use it in winter to barbeque.
Is the pergola roof angled to allow rain water to run off?
YES he’s back. Woke up last Sunday, made my coffee, loaded up UA-cam and no video?? 😂😂😂
I love the ending with rains 🌧️!

My wife has bought a pergola , and I said to her, is it higher than the outward opening French doors, she said WHAT no idea, so I did laugh when you mentioned that,
Very good. I like the idea of the wiring conduit.
Was that gorilla glue to stick the slab to the old mortar bed?
This is fantastic. How watertight is it with the slats closed? I appreciate that might not be its intent.
I just noticed at the end of your video, does the winding handle hit against the house as you turn it 🤔
That's a lovely pergola , always wondered how they put those things up, well done on a brilliant job, really suits your house ,thanks for another interesting ,informative video ❤️
