I'm a 68 yo woman, I have built a few small things, mostly cabinets, shelves things of that sort. I'm tired of digging my truck out of the snow and am going to attempt this, by myself as I could never afford what people ask for around here. I have watched a ton of videos, this one is most like what I have in mind...wish me luck!!!!!!

@@jackdotblue thank you for the offer! I got it done with the help of another like minded person, it came out great and made it through the winter here in the western mountain area of Maine. It's not easy to find people who want to help you for the sake of helping.😊 have a great day hope you don't get too nailed in that 10 feet of snow that's about to hit your area!

Awesome job you guys did, that shed will be there longer than you will live. I built a barn the same way. Treated post in the ground rough cut lumber and tin roof, that was almost 40 yrs ago. Still standing strong, I live in WV have seen 3 ft of snow on it. Thanks for the video.

For anyone in the future heres a tip i discovered when digging your holes with an auger. The auger can spin off the desired location so its hard to get it to fit your desired layout.
After you do your 3 4 5 drive a big nail or rebar for the center of each hole, checking diagonals per usual.
Then take your shovel and dig a concave hole about 4 to 5 inches deep in the center. This will help hold the auger in place to start your hole. A lot more accurate so less hand work.

I know it's not the right way,but on small shes like that I'll frame the smaller sides on the ground and dig 2 holes and stand up one side and get it plumb. Then I'd measure off that to determine where my other 2 holes need to be. Dig those 2 and stand that wall up and get it plumb. Connect my 2 long sides boards. Like I said,I know it's not proper, just works for me. It's a shed after all, not the space shuttle.🤗

I just got done building a steel 20x10 shed from an old round tube framed canvas style car port….did a concrete slab and used some lumber I already had to reinforce and add furring strips to it….had to buy the steal and additional lumber but it wasn’t bad. Have a total of 2k Into.

Nothing wrong with this for the purpose it was built. Good idea with the tractor and putting up the steel. That’s awkward stuff to work with!!😂😂. Sometimes, if it suits ya, you can roll it so it’s in the shape of a U lengthwise. Put a long enough bungee around the middle (and each end if it is long enough) to hold it, but not crease it. Then it is rigid and easier to handle. Just a tip if any of you didn’t already know. If you can stand it. Wear gloves!! It will cut you so quick that you won’t know except for the growing pool of blood at your feet.😮 There are bracings you could add at the corners at 45 degrees, but the way you built it with the posts set in the ground, it’s not necessary and more just visual. Like you said, nice and simple.
Really nice to be able to use downed trees for the lumber as well. I just started getting into using a bandsaw mill. I just bought it and am doing slab lumber currently. Once I get ahold of some larger diameter logs, I will definitely start making some lumber, just because, I will give it to family and friends if they need. I also want to build something a little similar, but more for standing under near a fire in bad weather or on hot days. It will be cedar 8x8 poles set on top of concrete piers in the ground (18” sonotube because it’s what is kicking around for the corners and 12” for anything in between. It’s going to be a frame of 24 x 24 and 12 foot spacing between the posts with the middle wide open. The. I will build some trusses that will allow for a small double roof at top to keep the rain out, but also let the smoke out. There will be shiplap cedar finishing the roof underneath and a tin roof. Because it will be on footings I will do some carving in the 45s for bracing I will need for stability. Your way is better, but the cedar tends to rot out due to our weather, the brackets we are using are the ones that keep the post 1” off the concrete. Just another way to skin a cat,,,,. 😂😂
    Thanks for sharing!!

Nice build. Sturdy for sure. I redid a hole too. Glad you could reuse the metal roof pieces. Every little bit helps. Quick question. I know you check the level horizontally. Did you check the level of the beams vertically too? I saw the level leaning on a post elsewhere. I know putting in horse fence with posts and run in sheds, and barn build, we had to do that even with nailing the top runner pieces along the top initially, to keep it straight. Just to keep it within 1/4" from straight on corners. Didn't want it off bad from posts not close.

  • @JocularJack
    @JocularJack Рік тому +18

Tip for finding a 21*21foot square would be to lay down four of these 21" sheets in a square and then use a square to check the angles, the 4 corners where they intersect should be square and you'll know you have the right layout for a properly squared building. You could also lay them 6" into eachother if you wanted a 20*20 or 12 inches in if you wanted a 19*19, etc etc
Edit: For the auger, once you are sure that you have a good square, you can use some spraypaint in the corners so that you can find the drill location easier - If ou want to be really precise, drill a 4-6" hole in a piece of plywood or other material and lat it out before spray-painting.

This is a very cool build and excellent camera work! I am going to up my camera work. I really enjoyed this build, and hopefully, I will be building at least one like this on my homestead on the first of next year! Thanks again for making this video, and may God bless your days the way He always blesses ours!

That's along the same lines of what I want to build to park my two SUVs under, except maybe not quite as long. We had a bad hailstorm here in NC that beat the shit out of my new 4Runner......$7700 to get it fixed. Never again will I fail to have a place to keep my vehicles out of the weather. I like this slant roof style with wood posts a whole lot better than having an all metal factory built carport.

    Thats called a tractor shed.
In mine I park both my lawn tractors, my cement mixer, my rototiller, my watering wagon,
my chipper, my wheel barrow, my dethatcher, both my push mowers & bags of bark &
    soil A MOST useful structure.

Measure twice cut once was a little underrated here... But I'm glad you measured again before continuing.

Great build! Cool that you were able to use the sawmill lumber from the downed trees.
