Recognize "Republic of China"(ROC) is NOT equal to recognizing "Taiwan independence", Republic of China is a Chinese regime established in 1912 who used to legally represent entire China, not just Taiwan, Taiwan is merely an island of China and one of few lands still controll by ROC after KMT defeated by CCP in 1949, Republic of China exists long before KMT relocate to Taiwan in 1949. "Taiwan independence", AKA Taiwan separatism, is an Anti-Chinese movement aiming for creating a new country solely based on Taiwan island(such as "Republic of Taiwan") to overthrow ROC and completely detach from Chinese ethnic identity and separate from China forever.

Bhutan being a chad and never recognizing PRC or ROC despite bordering PRC.
The "The Recognition of Taiwan" title is extremely misleading:
Despite ROC's territorial shrinkage to Taiwan and nearby islands by 1950 after it lost the Chinese Civil War, *the KMT government in Taipei had been most persistently and tenaciously holding unto its claim as the sole legitimate government of all China from 1950 all the way up to Taiwan's democratization in the 1990s.* During these decades, (known in Taiwan as the "Martial Law Era"), equating ROC with "Taiwan" was considered the most grievous faux pas, as it implied that ROC was merely a "Taiwanese government" as opposed to China's legitimate central government - an attitude ROC had absolutely zero tolerance of. Such faux pas was known as "ziwo aihua" ("self-dwarfing" or "self-demeaning") - something that could cause an editor or publisher to lose his job at very least. During these years, "Taiwanese Nativism" (the ideology that perceives Taiwan as a nation of its own, separate and distinct from China) was deemed as dangerous as Communism, and was subjected to the most ruthless persecution. In fact the majority of the dissidents, who were revered today as the forefathers of Taiwan's democracy, had been jailed at some points in the 60s and 70s on "national security" related charges, the severity of which were attributable less to their alleged political seditions than their endorsement of "secession"(i.e. promoting a distinct Taiwanese Identity and calling for Taiwanese self-determination), as the latter was seen as a far worse crime than criticizing the government in the eyes of ROC.
On the diplomacy front, ROC broke off relationship with anyone who recognized the "Bandit Regime" on the mainland. It was also unrelenting in its resistance to the American proposal of "double recognition" regarding China's seat in the UN. (With more countries recognizing PRC as China's legitimate government, ROC's holding of China's seat in the UN became increasingly tenuous from 1960 onward. To avoid ROC being kicked out of UN outright, the US tried to charter a "mid-course", whereby two "Chinas" would both be recognized with China's veto power in UN security council being passed on to PRC and ROC retaining its membership). Despite the continuous lobbying from the US, ROC remained unwavering in its position that there was only one China, of which Taiwan was a province and itself the sole central government. (ROC eventually relented and begrudgingly came onboard the "double recognition" proposal in 1971. However, it was too late. In the same year the UN switched recognition to PRC and expelled ROC.)
Only with Taiwan's democratization in the 1990s, the previously whispered Taiwanese Nativism became legalized and subsequently crept into the mainstream social discourse. It finally blossomed into full-fledged Taiwanese Nationalism in 2000s. During the process ROC itself transitioned from a Chinese-Government-in-Exile into a genuine Taiwanese government, elected by local Taiwanese and embracing the locals' Taiwan-centric values, attitudes, and identities.
Notwithstanding all of these, even today, a largely "Taiwanized" ROC is still Republic of China, not Republic of Taiwan. ROC still in legal & diplomatic terms presents itself as the government of China. For example, in 2017, when Panama switched its diplomatic recognition of China from ROC to PRC, ROC's foreign ministry released a harshly worded announcement, which criticized Panama for turning its back on "108 year's relationship". The year count mentioned there was intriguing - Panama established diplomatic relation with the Empire of China under Qing dynasty in 1909, precisely 108 years before. (In 1909, Taiwan was a Japanese colony.) It's just another case-in-point of ROC's abiding diplomatic position - it sees itself as a direct successor of Imperial China, whose last emperor abdicated his sovereignty to the Republic on Feb 12th, 1912. ROC has been constitutionally taking on Qing Dynasty's mantle ever since as the latest & current China. It still remains so today in ROC's official posturing.
Therefore, even today, there isn't really a "recognition of Taiwan" anywhere on the planet - even ROC itself doesn't officially recognize a country called "Taiwan", leave alone any other countries in the world.
As for the Cold War era before Taiwan's democratization, such labeling is even more misleading - *the dispute then was 100% a dispute over "Who is the legitimate government of China".* In fact, If, during these years, someone living in Taiwan had the indiscretion of making such a video, in which ROC was presented as simply "Taiwan", he would soon have ROC's own secret police knocking at his door, interrogating his suspected involvement with "secessionism".
Had no idea of Taiwan's persistence of being the government of China, or the cold era version of the dispute. Cool.

Listing how many countries "recognize Taiwan independence" vs "recognize Taiwan as part of China" is very misleading, since both the PRC and ROC officially recognize Taiwan as part of China and not as independent. There IS a movement to revoke the ROC's claim on China, Mongolia, etc., and declare it an independant republic of Taiwan (ROT, I guess), but this is unpopular, since it wouldn't actually change anything and the PRC bizarrely enough considers this a red flag and thus might invade if such a statement was made. For some reason the PRC prefers it when the ROC claims all of the PRC's territory, apparently because they think this somehow improves the chances of the de facto separate countries reunifying.

These countries all are small countries that want to get more money from Taiwan.
They are countries that don't give a shit about China's threat and recognise which China they want.
From a philosophical standpoint, the size of partial territory or population that you are governing over doesn't decide whether you are the lawful representative.
For all intents and purposes, the ROC and the PRC have the same claim to mainland China plus Taiwan, maybe the ROC even more since they were the government that first represented China in the UN, and the PRC never legally took over China or had a real democratic mandate from the people living there.
In the end, it's all splitting hairs. China and Taiwan are nowadays de facto separate countries, and while we may never not see full mutual recognition in our lifetime, I do very much hope that they will let each other be, because that is frankly the best possible result for all Chinese people. Bhutan: I'm the real China🤪
I'm from the Philippines, Philippines is the nearest country in Taiwan except china , Taiwan and Philippines have a standoff of water territory and Taiwan have own military forces , for me Taiwan is not a country but also not controlled by mainland china . It is independent land and people and constitution
yeah, and their constitution even say Taiwan belongs to China.
Yes, I'm from Singapore, and I don't think Taiwan is a country. There are only two regimes in one country, and the civil war is not over yet. Moreover, Taiwan is not recognized by the United Nations and most countries. Although in fact it is not controlled by mainland China, Taiwan is not legally independent.
@大时代中華民國憲法僅記載中國之「固有疆域」而不是實際掌控的領土,兩者不一樣,在撰寫憲法的同時台灣還在被日本統治,但中華民國一樣把台灣納了進去
@大时代 because Taiwan is the real china , taiwanese constitution have china historical constitution, the mainland china or CCP is new country
@@edgardobaldomar8825 ROC lost the civil war so PRC is the true China
I wish Taiwan was recognised by all the countries
