Original Explorer 500 Review: ua-cam.com/video/r-6YwALMr9Q/v-deo.html
Nothing worse when there's hype for a new product and they barely have enough to support it. Thanks for looking into it. I have the 240 but mostly don't want the 20% discount to go away just because they are not available.
Nigel, imagine being part of the launch for weeks and then spending several days in 105 degree heat filming and up all night editing just to wake up to a ton of complaints. The GOOD NEWS is that they just informed me they will be back in stock this Thursday and they apologize for the mess up. The promo codes will still be in effect!
@@HOBOTECH I feel your pain man...we all do. So thank you again for all the hard work ☺️🇺🇸. It's appreciated.
Jazz Man
Hey Buddy! The Jackery pretty much threw you under the bus....er....ah VAN 💀😷😂 I'll turn on the bell. You are a terrific salesman & I hope the Jackery folks have figured out how to stay in your good graces. This is NOT it.
I'll be in touch. I got 3.5 hours of 1100 BTU AC from my Gen 1 Zero Breeze Saturday night in a Flying J's in 85* F @ 1:30 AM. I was in the back of my 2006 Toyota Four Runner with the big 6 & the terrific 4WD. When I can live out of my Tow vehicle I'll start thinking of my custom, off road, Cassita Travel Trailer for my house. So, still gonna go for the Explorer 500 & the solar panels. The build in hot South Texas continues 😵😬💀😷🎶😭😂,
Best to you & Miss Heidi, Tom,
Michael in Hel.......my bad, Houston 😭
It's not worth buying anyway. For the price you can get a larger battery and be able to do more with it. It's just a gimmick.
Excellent job. You made it easy to understand and gave a list of items it can hansle and not handle. Very important fir people who don't understand amps and watts
Thank you, HoboTech, for the information and the Promo Code! I just now ordered the Jackery 500W. I already have the 240 and the 100W Solar Saga and have been very pleased with them. The plug-and-play convenience is what I need. I'm also a Honda fan so when Honda decided Jackery was worthy of their association, that went a long way with me.
Great video! Very helpful suggestions! Thanks for sharing.
HoboTech
Thanks for the review/info on the Jackery 500. It is a great review. I pulled the trigger on the Jackery 500 a few days ago and they delivered it yesterday. In order to test the unit out I charged it completely and cooked my first meal a few minutes ago. I cook most of my meals using the 120V 60 cycle Wolf Puck 1.5 cup rice cooker. The cooker only draws about 200 watts per hour and does a great job cooking everything from soups, stews, pasta and everything else. The best thing about the cooker is 90% of my meals only take 1/2 hour to cook. So the Jackery really only consumes about 100 watts per meal. So now with my new Jackery 500 I can cook just above anything I want on road. Thanks HoboTech 👍👍👍👍👍
Wonderful video with information that is to the point. I really appreciate this!
Great video and script writing! Very informative! Great job!
That was a very informative video and I appreciate the info on what it cannot do also. Keep up the great tech vids.! Hoping I pick one up on the 25th, if they don't sell out in 29 minutes! Thanks again for all your hard work.
Thank God for you. I needed this so much. Thank for taking the time to show us.
Ok you sold me on this unit! Thank you for this video, I seriously think you did an amazing job.
Thanks for the presentation. Pretty amazing.
Wow, this video is chock-full of very useful information! What a brilliant little device 👍👌✌🏻😎
After watching this video, and a few others, I bought the Jackery 500 last week using a promo code direct from
Jackery. (I couldn't get the Hobotech code to work) After fully charging it, it ran a ResMed AirSense CPAP with a
humidifier and heated hose for 8 hours and used about 70% of the available power. I charged it up again and it ran a Transcend II travel CPAP for 8 hours, using about 20% of the available power. The Transcend does not have and LCD display, humidifier or heated hose. Both were tested using the AC output.
Bummer woke up late. Thursday it is. Informative love your content and videos.🤙
Sold out again. I got mine this morning and the promo code worked.
Good video, very informative. Thanks for the promo code.
Excellent review. I learned so much as I just purchased this. Thank U
Thank you Hobo I just ordered both the Explorer 500 and the SolarSaga 100
It’s really great to know that I can to plug my costway fridge for my camping aventures... thanks
Love the review. I have the 240 plus 2 160's so I will also order the 500 on the 25th. When running your generator (or anything else), and have solar available you should mention the fact the Jackery can be charging while charging whatever therefore extending the power time. That's the neat thing I like about them.
Thanks! I did mention that in the review video. In fact, it says it in the user manual.
Great review Tom!
Thank you for the info, I couldn’t find it anywhere else
Love it !!!
You can also run up to 3 100W regular solar panels in parallel to charge the Jackery faster. Just double check the OC voltage rating to make sure it is within tolerance with the Jackery (but it should be). Much better than waiting 10+ hours.
Great review. Thank you so much ! God Bless you. Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving day 🍂.
Very informative!
Awesome video/info
This guy is like a wizard. Only without the pointy hat. He should get a pointy hat.
That's too funny I was going to ask you if you use a flat iron. Very good video I was the one that mentioned the ice maker. I'll have to go back and watch again I believe you said 3 hours 5 or 6 dumps a hour Cool video
Omg. A hairdryer on low?? That would be a major game changer. I bought the CPAP Jackery on clearance which is about the same (if not the same) watts. I'll have to experiment! Thanks
Did it work for you all night or did it cut off?
Thanks I used your code!

Hello Tom
Thank you for the info & discount.
Great Video
I like it, How many hours will it power a C-PAP without a power humidifer? And With one?
It will definitely run it 8+ hours without the humidifier. Those heated humidifiers use electric heating coils and I'm not sure of the draw as it depends on the model but it's likely not to make it all night. There should be a watt or amp rating on it.
Just do 518 divided by the watts it says. That's how many hours minus about 20% for the inverter.
That awesome how he's off the grid, but still connected with tech no hassle
If you can drive around and starlink stays connected he will be even more connected
Just purchased a 500 with your discount code. Woo Hoo! Thanks Man!!
from amazon?? saying there are none available?
@@dkatec I purchased it on July 24th and was able to secure one. I looked the very next day and they were unavailable again. just checked again and still none available. 100 bucks off cleared their stock...I'm very glad I was able to secure one.
@@randywaychoff7805 well done! hoping I can do the same soon!
Please make one for each Jackery product. Very useful, don’t really know why should I buy one. Since I’m at home all day.
Great video
very good presentation, impressive
Hi Odin, I saw you making faces behind Hobo's back while he was recording. I heard you say the only good thing the Jackery does is run the fan . . as long as it is pointed at you. What's that you say, it is not capabe of cleaning your litter box either. Well as least you have the fan.
Great vid!
Salutations always imformative..be well
Since the Jackery1000 can also run a full-sized fridge, freezer, a small microwave, hotplate, or small room heater during a power outage, I’ll be waiting until I can spring for one of those. Might even work for our on-demand hot water heater! Running the fridge and freezer for just an hour or so a couple of times a day should be enough, since they’re pretty well insulated. We only camp once or twice a year, but we have about a dozen power outages annually, from windstorms and heavy snowfalls.
Yeah wanted 1000 watt but at £1000 is stupid overpriced so bought the 500watt to run my large freezer and Internet during a power cut for a few hours should be good enough.
Great videos , very helpful. I have a question. will your sportsman generator run an Instant Pot? thanks.
No, that was another reason I upgraded. The Sportsman never was able to handle more than about 650 watts at sea level.
I enjoyed your videos solar for me it's still fairly new. After watching your videos I realized but I don't need the traditional solar setup for my off-grid property. My question my power needs will be for a fridge, a TV and some small electronic devices what DVD players an audio systems. Maybe you can suggest a system for me to run my application thanks then again I enjoy your videos very informative and educational
My apologies for posting that your 100$ off was not valid any more. I received your message and realized I had left the “E” out of the code. I redid my order and it was accepted. Love your informative videos. Keep em coming.
Well done!
I am gonna use this for a Dometic CFX75DZ and other things.
Thanks for the review.
What part of the country 6you in the video? Weather looks very nice.
Cottonwood, AZ. It's 105-107 degrees daily. It was so hot on filming day that my gear kept overheating and I had to go inside to cool it off!
Great informative video ! Look forward to watching more ..newly subscribed! ChillC
Damn, that thing handles the pull from an ice machine! That’s really cool. Those things run a pretty heavy pump so it’s cool the Jackery can handle that kind of draw.
hillbilly tech I know that the surge is heavy to get it to start up. I’m sure once it’s running it’s mellow.
hillbilly tech Well then maybe you can help me with my situation.
hillbilly tech I’ve got a 800 watt inverter that won’t run my ice maker. I’ll get back to the boat and can run some brands and numbers at you. What ya think?
You can text me through Instagram: sailing_with_vampires
Hi there nice video what type of screen house is that
You can get the Aimtom solar panel and it's basically the same as the Jackery solar panel and was way cheaper. I can't remember exactly but I know it was at least $100 cheaper and the intake was the exact same amount of wattage and it connect to the Jackery 500 just fine!!
Just get a regular 60e or 100w panel and a mc4 to 8mm adapter
New sub. Great channel. Good vid
Here's a use you missed...When we dry camped in the AZ desert, we ran an queen size electric blanket...Only used 180 watts when heating.
I mentioned it. I use one myself. ua-cam.com/video/_2g-cklvu4g/v-deo.html
Very good vid....informative about the capabilities....one question- can the jackery or any of the other solar generators be charged via solar while simultaneously using the AC output? Thanks!!!
Yes.
An ad prior to your video for the Patriot Power Generator costs $2000 with a 100 watt solar panel. Looks like a similar item as the Jackery.
I am a Patriot without buying a Patriot Power Generator!
Great video! I have one and I can't find information on what type of connection the DC output that is next to the car plug has. Those two little round ones on the left.
someone knows?
Gotta get one
Odin gives zero Fs 😂
Perfect.
I knew it!!!!!!!!! 😀 I knew you use a straightening iron for your beard. 😁😂👍
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
I have a 3.5 cu deep freezer. Hoping this Jakery 500 will keep it going
Can you please do a video or recommend what solar power generation is good to use for 60watt lamps? I have to buy one for my 79 year old mother just incase she has a power outage in her area and I can not get to her until the morning. Thank you Mr. Hobo Tech
Mice ?... I had a mouse or Chip Monk get in my engine bay to start chewing at my hood insulation,... A Moth Ball puck that comes in in a plastic case with hanging hook for $1 from The Dollar Tree hooked under the hood & no more critters :)
Well... a very short ago it seems you discussed the 240 and the 60 watt panels. I was impressed and bought them. Now the 500 is being touted. Hmmm....could you do a compare so I can get the most out of the 240?
I did separate review videos on both the 240 and 500 but I'll consider doing a comparison video. Thanks for the idea.
Used your promo code for Solar Saga 60. Thanks, bud. 🥺
you're right they should have been more prepared when they put this on the market I'm wondering how long will promotions last before they get them on the market I'll keep trying back
What heater options would work with the 500? I have a small electric heater. I guess it's meant for a bathroom or something. But it says it's 1500 watts. Will I not be able to run this with the Jackery?
Used link below but it doesn't go to the Explorer 500 only the solar panel. Looked all over Amazon and the explorer 500 not to be found. I guess amazon doesn’t have the explorer 500 in stock as of 7-25-19. Any idea when they will be in stock?
Thanks for the great videos, you rock!
All of the links in the description go to the correct products. The Explorer 500 is out of stock. I don't know when they'll be back.
Just placed my order.
This unit seems to be 95% perfect. Finally a usable capacity. I really hope they make an extra high current charging port. 100W from solar and 50W from 12V is just not quite enough but I think I'll manage for now.
Congrats! I think you'll really enjoy it.
$400 shipped with your code pushed me over the edge LOL.
So I got it and tested it real quick.
As you state and has shown the charging from 12V with the engine on is 42W. With the engine off it is `20W.
Charging from AC is 82W. Due to that I tried charging it from a tiny old 120W inverter just to see if I could get up to 82W but it didn't work. I suspect it's because my old small inverter is most likely anything but a pure-sine.
Talking solar panels here. Is there any reason a 160W panel connected to the charging input wouldn't work? Looks like the output voltage from the panel is in range and the charging circuit will only charge at the current it is designed for. Reason for using a 160W would be to compensate for power loss due to non-optimal angle. I plan on putting it flat on the roof of my van.
I'm an EE and I see no reason at all this wouldn't work but has anyone tried yet?
@@christianholmstedt8770 Nice. The reason for the drop with the engine off is because of the lower voltage. The higher the voltage you pump into the E500 the faster it charges. You can use as much solar as you like as long as you stay under the 30v limit. I did get mine to charge on a cheap 150w modified sine inverter but it only worked when the DC supply was over 13.2v. So try running the vehicle and see if your little inverter works.
Engine was running. It's a cheapo RadioShack inverter from about 10-12 years ago. Works fine for a laptop and other small stuff.
I'll get a panel at some point. It's needed if I decide to go with a fridge.
One thing to remember is to make sure the 12V outlet used for charging is fresh and not dirty and corroded. Mine is a bit old and the contact got very hot.
It's a great unit and a no-brainer at $400.
Hobitech might as well be showing us how to maintain our spaceships.
Out of stock...Oh well I got mine and here on Monday!!!

Great video. .seem it's Russell
The biggest negative appears to be that it uses a PWM, instead of an MPPT, charge controller. So the solar charging efficiency drops as the light dims.
@@felicitycalf3479 Think of PWM as a simple dumb charger. It passes the power through to the battery with almost no changes regardless of whether or not the battery can make good use of the power in that form. MPPT is a smarter more expensive charger that adjusts the power so that the battery can absorb more of what the panels are generating. For example the poorer the light (early and late in the day) the better MPPT performs compared to PWM.
Will Prowse has a very good channel which includes a video comparing several of these generators: "Micro Solar Generator Buyer's Guide! Jackery vs Rockpals vs Expertpower"
Odin did give 1 F. Towards last of vid. 1 fart aimed your way. At least the look on your face kinda said so. LOL.. As always a great job and as always Fair Winds and smiles.
Newbie to my Jackery500 and tried to use Slime tire inflator but couldn't handle it. No info as to wattage but when talking about fuse replacement they say 15amp. So does my 12v outlet not handle 15 amps? And do I have to check wattage AND amp requirements on 12v appliances I want to use? Know nothing obviously about electricity so please give as simple an answer as you can. Thanks so much
Could I run an small heater just to warm up the camper shell on my p/u truck just so i can go to sleep on a warm toasty bed maybe 20mins or so...? ? 🤔
How would the 500 do charging a marine battery? Looking for something to recharge 1 battery while using other battery on trolling motor on boat. Very informative vid.
It could certainly do that. What kind of charge level you get will of course depend on the size of the marine battery.
What am I going to use to boil h2o for my morning coffee - most electric kettles are 1200-1500W? Boil it on propane/butane?
That beard... Awesome, just awesome.
Shoot! I missed it! When now are they available again?? Thanks!!
1st week of August.
If you use the 12 v plug in to power the BesTech 300 watt pure sine wave inverter and charge the Jackery 500 with the ac from the 300 watt pure sine wave inverter could you possibly run this thing for a longer time.? Have you tried or is it possible?
Hi, could you please tell me if I can use the Power Station to connect my Yamaha Psr-SX900 musical keyboard which power consumption is 25W?? I intend to go camping and I need a Power Station to plug my Yamaha keyboard to play outdoors for about 2 hours. Is it suitable for this task??
Yes. You can run a keyboard and a small amp at the same time.
What is the screen tent your in? Thanks.
Hubby and I bought the Jackery 500 and the Vremi ice maker for our hurricane preps. We need to keep insulin cold in the event of power outage. We hooked the ice maker to a fully-charged Jackery a/c outlet as you demonstrated. Turns out, the Jackery 500 will NOT run the ice maker. The ice maker requires too high of a draw and the machine turns off.
You should have checked the wattage draw of the ice maker
@@friedpickles342 Same exact item as demonstrated in the video. The video said it worked. It does not. Very misleading.
Hello, its a very good video, I have a question, do I can charge it with 100w solar panel while I am using the unit?
Yes, of course
You are a good salesman.. That thing should be in everybody's emergency bug out bag.. Nice video.
I really Trust your opinion, so i would like to ask you what should i buy that would run a c-pap 7hrs and a fan and still be able to charge up with solor panels all day?
If you bought the jackery 500 and the solar saga 100w solar panel. Would that be enough to power a 64 quart fridge full time on the road? Thanks!
Yes, but you'd want a backup charge plan during bad weather. You can charge it directly from your vehicle isolator or use a generator.
Update on my purchases: I bought the Explorer 500 and Solarsaga60 through your site, I hope you get the credit for the sales.
The Explorer 500 arrived ahead of the projected date by 5 days, which is awesome. Once I opened the box and read every thing, I powered it up and it is at 30%
I plugged it in to the 120 volt AC outlet in my office, it charged at 81 watts, charging sequence:
1 hour it was at 40%, 2 hours it was at 58%, 3 hours was 71%, 4 hours was 84%, 5 hours was 96%, 5 hours 16 minutes was 99%, 5 hours 48 minutes was 100%. So on average it was charging about 13% to 14% per hour.
I am anxious to get it home, drain it some, then try the Solarsaga on it.
Thanx for all of your tips!
Speaking of tips, did you know that the nurses at the circumcision ward earn $40.00 per hour + tips? :-)
Haha! Thanks for buying through my links. I'm sure you'll enjoy it and like I did find many uses for it you never thought of before.
@@HOBOTECH Update to my Explorer 500 - I have had it 4 years, I have only used it 4 or 5 times (The maximum drainage was about 20%).
This next part is all my fault (I think) - I went to use the SoGen this weekend and it was dead, D....E....D, dead! I plugged it in to my house (120V) to charge it. The blue light came on, there was nothing on the display panel. I unplugged it and plugged it in again, same results, nothing..... D.....E.....D.....dead!
I sent an email to Jackery, they explained that the battery is out of warranty. They also told me that I am supposed to use or drain/cycle the battery on a constant basis, or every so often. They said it is a bad for the battery to let it sit for long periods of time without using it.
Somewhere in the back of my memory bank, I recall that you said this. Maybe Odin told me.
Here I am, up Schitt creek without my new SoGen.
Jackery told me that they have a "Trade-in" program where they will give me a small gift card. My next questions to them are: How much of a trade-in will I get, and how do I return it? The Trade-in value needs to be worth it or I will just take this thing apart and salvage some of the guts (Innards) and to see what makes this thing tick (When it used to tick)
I know that you rep and test a lot of SoGens - If I was to buy another (500 to 800 watt), can you recommend one, or should I stick with Jackery?
By the way, I have a Jackery power bank that I use quite a bit for charging my phone when I am on the go (Probably 25 times over 2 years). A funny thing happened at the farm this week, this power bank also died less than a week before the explorer 500. The power bank is only 2 years old. Am I starting to see a pattern here? Could it be this part of the world (Northern Calif.) that I live in that is causing death to my Jackery products? Are aliens ruining my equipment? Tom, I appreciate your videos and "Hobo Tech Knows product test reviews" - I got a big kick out of the solar panel that you shot up!
Great video. How did u plug in those harbor freight lights? I hv then too. Are they 12v? They end doesn't plug into my jackery? It's diameter is too big.
I made my own adapter cable so they plug into the 12v lighter socket.
HOBOTECH thank you.
The jackery has a built in sine wave converter right? So why do you need one to charge ebike?
Its great for holding the door open
What kind of pop up shelter is that when you’re showing the ice machine? Thanks
Gazelle. hobotech.tv/amazon/#Cargo-Outdoor
I wonder if they could be combined with another jackery. Like you do the generators. It would require some sort of power combiner it would double the amperage but not the voltage
No.
