Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:
Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deck building game with a twist. Set on a train to hell, you’ll use tactical decision making to defend multiple vertical battlegrounds. With real time competitive multiplayer and endless replayability, Monster Train is always on time.
I am witnessing esport legend NL put his tank in the back line. Chat plz hold me
That hurt my heart every time he did it. Like, the minion with no attack and is meant to be healed, should be at the FRONT. Smh
considering he played last episode pretty alright, I'm kinda blown away by how he did this one....
Excuse me, his esports legend persona is called "Northern" ou "North Million"
NL logic: you want your tank to stay alive so he can do his job as a tank as long as possible
so you put them in the back where it's safer
perfect sense
@@EvanWantsSoup Hellhorned/Awoken is a lot simpler than Awoken/Hellhorned because it's harder to find reliable ways of dealing damage and hellhorned armor is antisynergistic with awoken healing, which becomes more obvious when you're leaning into healing your doods. NL still hasn't wrapped his head around all the fundamentals, but I'm not surprised this one went worse than the first.
Nl: Gets a tank as a champion that does damage when healed
Nl: Put the tank behind his damage dealers
Also NL: Puts his demon in front of the husk too...
Yeh that made me sooo mad :/
Confirmed: NL was the military advisor for the Battle of Winterfell.
If it wasn't because i too watched the video i would call you a liar, but i watched it, and i know in all my pain, that he did put the damn tank at the back.
@@1Cirmag put... put the trebuchets on the front line
NL! Imp takes only one "space" on level, you can put units up to 5 "spaces" so you can have your champion (2 spaces) + another unit (with 2 spaces) and imp on same level!!! It pains me that you didn't play imp at 18:18
if you upgrade the space enough you can have up to 7 units on 1 floor
Same... and upgrading space is so powerful. It’s the most limited resource by far. Spells vs units not even a competition.
Thank you sir that was killing me
It took me a while to realise that NL thought you could only have 2 units per floor
@@Lastielion I honestly thought the same thing
"i learned i gotta put my tank in front", first play of the game he puts the tank in the back lol
Leo Rodriguez this is so hard to watch... it made me scream at my display -.-
a part of me died everytime i saw him put that 0/20 champion in the back even tho it benefits from being healed
... But what if the enemy tried backstabbing? Kappa
EVERY* play of the game
Then go brother
Oh boy, Monster Tries, my favorite series.
Those monsters put in a lot of effort, how kind of the title to recognize that work.
I want more
EVENNNNNN MOREEEEE also great job keep it up
Is this sarcasm?
I had to rewind and make sure I heard him right XD
Not gonna lie, this game is really fun to watch while at the same time learning about the game.
Thank you!
@@Northernlion I'm interested to see the other clans and the amount of possible synergies seems really high. I'm especially excited to see how NL experiments with different clan/deck combos.
Also this year has been fire NL thank you
"This unit benefits a great deal from being healed."
"I don't want to use heals for anything other than this unit"
*consistently puts other units in front of it to protect it from taking damage*
I love you, egg, but what the hell man
This is why they gotta bump the difficulty in this game. Not fun to watch 95% suboptimal plays lol
@@abelbeans he's playing in ascension 0, which as per developers commentary, is almost like a tutorial ascension. Ascension 1 is the actual intended gameplay for general purposes, but he can't even beat 0 yet lol
@@Jonjon13Jonjon13 Well, it is only his 3rd time playing. It takes some time for an egg to go from soft boiled to hard boiled.
Thanks for the defense Gruntmaster, you're a legend
@@Jonjon13Jonjon13 ahhh that explains the low difficulty then. Hyped for this release
The day NL realizes you can play an imp along with 2 regular units I'm going to pog out.
Its gonna happen tomorrow, calling it.
Not quite tomorrow but soon
Northernlion episode 33 because of the back log
I'm literally watching this to see if I want to buy the game myself, I've never played it, and was able to figure that much out just by seeing the mechanics so far. How does this guy have almost 1,000,000 subscribers?
@@tenks360 It's pretty well known that watching a game be played and having to play a game while constantly trying to be entertaining/provide commentary are two very different things. It's obvious to us cuz we aren't having to worry about anything other than observing.
"I want a tankier unit to protect our champion"
Plz, my egg, he is very sick.
The dementia is taking root, and it's made his channel all the more popular xD
@@nomoturtle1788 big boomer energy
So, NL has internalised that one can only put up 2 units on each row, disregarding the energy each unit takes up. :b
yep and he will always take +1 energy instead because of that. the +1 capacity is so good. he could put a 3 cap 2cap and imp or 3 2cap units on it but because he thinks(for now) only 2 units can be on the same floor I dont think he can get a win yet.
TBH I can't fault him for that one, most units seem to occupy 2 spots and you have 5 per floor? The way the UI shows it, it does look like there are 2 spots for units on each floor, you know?
I didn't realize that until I saw him mouse over a floor with two units in it already and it showed a third slot open up. I thought until then that you could only have two units per floor up to their size cap.
@@umbaupause Sort of, except enemy units stack 3 to a floor all the time, so there's no excuse for thinking the physical cap is 2.
@@ThePeteyGunn I was just as confused as he was about what that reward symbol was!
I've gone from seeing this game and thinking "its just a gimmick" to wishlisting the game and sharing it with my friends all because of NLs ability to sell anything. Thanks for the great series and keep it up brother
Glad to hear it!
I remember when NL would say "hey" before "everybody"
this is just more efficient ;)
A natural progression
Bro the POGS/s in this series has reached never before seen levels.
Since everybody else covered the thing with the champion, I'll just remind you that Sting is this game's equivalent of shiv. You had some in the first episode, 0 cost, 10 damage to the front enemy. You were just extremely unfortunate to not come across any of the effects that give you stings.
15:55
NL, who uses a tank champion: "I want tankier unit to protect our champion"
Oh how like you NL 🤣
Hey NL, you can place more than two monsters on the floor. The resource above their head is how much space you use. For example, the champion takes 2 spots so you can also have a steward and an imp. The welder imp took 1 space and the steward took 2 for a total of 5. This can be increased by the choice that gives you energy, cards, or space.
Did you watch episode 1 ? He knows...
@@pigggy2313 Clearly not. He wasn't playing Welder Helper because he thought his floors could only hold 2 units max.
20:00 the welder helper costs only 1 capacity, so fits next to the two demon lords, doesn't it?
Yes but I think somewhere he just thought he could only put 2 units on each floor rather than up to capacity.
Yes. but due to starting capacity being 5 and most units costing 2, his initial observations were "two units per room", so he'll stick with that mindset for a while.
@@Orillion123456 *Ichi spam intensifies*
This is honestly my favorite series right now, I can't wait to get this game. Thanks for making me aware of it!
Thanks Matthew!
@@Northernlion ❤
even with me having knowledge of this game, this is still super enjoyable to watch. yes, NL repeatedly placed his tank in the back; so what! we're still in the beginning of the series, watching NL learn the mechanics and figure stuff out if at least half of the fun!
Appreciate it brother
I'm loving this series!
Hes the greatest salesman of all time. I have to buy this game now. Just so I can play 3 units on every floor and place my tanks in front.
Something something greatest salesmen...
But seriously ennel's fundamental misunderstanding of pretty much everything he had going for him this run made me resolve to buy this game on release.
there is a free demo of it on steam (where you can play close to the content NL has so far aka 2 factions and some events and a set amount of enemies) but if you invest time in you notice more mistakes ;_;
@@ThePeteyGunn beta closed a couple weeks ago
@@mattchamp1541 yeah beta closed. But there is a FREE DEMO on the STEAM PAGE. Seriously, the content is pretty much the same of the public beta, but it's a demo and it's on steam.
It literally tells you if a unit will die or not in the attack phase, there is no "i dont think it will live". It either will, or it wont, and it shows you so clearly.
NL...you could’ve put the imp in any floor with one capacity left. It could’ve gone with both of the demons on the same floor for example. :/ you’ll figure it out eventually.
the amount of slay the spire PTSD im getting is unreal and yet im pogged out of my mind
Late to the party, but just voicing my great pleasure at seeing this series. The dopamine hit from the pog levels in these videos is so huge that my brain is going to explode in a rain of pogs. Thank you Eggfather for the blessed Monster Train, and may the Pogs continue!
I've waited the entire day for this only to find a 31 minute episode?! Please NL, you can't make us love content so much and have us wait patiently for episodes like this!
I have been so excited for another episode! I hope this series goes on as long as Slay the Spire
Dear lord seeing old videos of people learning the game...really is just, wow, seeing the welder helper being not placed down twice on daedulus...its a one capacity, u have one spareeee..
But can’t wait to watch more
This is my favourite new series of the year! It is a great deck building roguelite! It’s absolutely encouraged me to buy this when it comes out!
First thing said: We gotta put a big damage dealer in the back, and protect it with a good tank in front.
First thing DONE: puts a 0 damage 20hp unit on the back, and a poor measly 8hp in front, to defend the obviously valuable 0 attack of the dps!
So, time for more tips!
-What you said is true! But please put it into practice! besides some chump-blocking imps or similar units from other clans, you want to have the bigger health unit on the front (generally, even if it's the one doing more damage or doing some utility, bigger health in front keeps all units alive longer.)
Take the first boss in the first battle, your train steward can only take 2 attacks of 4 damage, so it dies only having done 5 damage to the boss. If the steward were behind your champion (who contributed nothing to the fight in your case). While if he was behind the champion, the steward would have been doing 5 damage repeatedly until the Sentinel dies, many turns later, resulting in much better damage.
-Also, CAPACITY. The space your units occupy in the train is represented by "capacity", which are the little yellow buttons on top of the cards. Each floor of the train has a capacity limit (by default 5) represented on top-left of said floor. Usually units occupy 2 spaces (represented by 2 pips on top of the card) but some units are "massive" and take 3 or 4, possibly even more in extreme cases!
And also, some units (usually support-like, the imps are an example) take just 1 space and are so easy to fit... even if you already have 2 regular units!
You can upgrade capacity after the main bosses (which are always Daedalus and Fel, the ones that fly around before entering the train) instead of ember/energy or card draw, it's the third option! Also there are other options to upgrade capacity but are more centered in other clans, as I recall :)
The ultimate maximum cap is actually 7 units, no matter how little the units are, or how upgraded your capacity is... you'll never see more than 7 units on any side of the train (also true for enemies, they can't fit more than 7).
i love this game im gonna listen to every episode of this series while i play it
18:24 when he finally got welder imp and didnt play him i actually cried a little
why can he not understand that all 3 can fit on a floor this week old vid making me angy
I discovered this game from your video of it, downloaded the demo, and have already played 7 hours of the demo. Amazing game, so glad to see it as a series!
NL finding great games to go along with his great commentary. Love the series so far, even if its only 2 episodes in.
NL: "we don't have a tanky unit to protect the warrior"
ME (red in the face and yelling at the screen): "Your champion! YOUR CHAMPION!"
So glad you made this a series!!
I am really excited for this game.
Dude I friggin love this game so much, bought the game and played a bit myself and now coming back to watch all of these.
Pog rain etc etc. This game deserves a bespoke pog comment. I'm so impressed with the amount of depth and quality in this game and it really seems to live up to spire in a lot of ways which is no mean feat. Day 1 purchase all going well
Haha like the series NL. It is always fun to watch you slowly learn how to play the different styles and mechanics. Guess the length of the first episode scared you a bit because it felt like you didn't think through some of the mechanics this round (like your champion for example). Maybe if you feel the episodes are too long, split a whole round into two episode. Since the floors are quite separate I think it could work for this game until you have gotten faster with the mechanics. Two more small things;
1: Once in one of the shops you wanted to view your deck while choosing between two card, but didn't find where you could. Up to the left by your pyre's life is the deck button.
2: You are able to place more than two creatures on a floor. How many you can have on a floor depends on how much of those yellow circles they "cost".
Keep up the great content.
I have been itching for more of this. SO PUMPED! Thanks NL!
Tank in the back line, thinking he can only put 2 units per floor
It do be episode 2 of a new game
Glad to see more of this series!
This is really good. Been on a dekbuilder/roguelite hunger recently and it's nice that you're delivering!
Man, what a fascinating game. With the Lets Look At and Episode 1 I was thinking that this game's strength was mostly in it's visual aesthetic and presentation but I really think this episode demonstrates that there is a LOT of nuance as far as unit positioning, buff placement, card draw, and upgrade paths. As sad as I was to see Eden go, I really love watching and learning along as NL teases out the nuance in games like this.
The following comment is not meant as criticism for the series (which is great) or of NL as a person. It is written for other viewers to share my frustration and bond over a shared media experience.
Up until 18:20 NL's placement had been questionable, but at that point it became blatantly obvious he don't understand the mechanics.
You can have two branded demons and a wealder helper in the same rom, for maximum pog.
Loving this game! Really fun to watch. Hope this series goes on for a while
NL: “I should protect my tanky units with my attack units!”
Northerlion changing the meta of all mmorpgs puting the tank behind the dps, truly an innovator
So glad you're doing this series, man. Thanks for the sick content
i'm absolutely in love with this game and this series. keep it up brother
im loving this series!
Episode 2 and it's already my favorite thing to watch on UA-cam. Love it! Also it's really gonna pog off when NL starts putting 3 guys per floor. Also it seems like that +1 capacity per floor upgrade would be extremely useful. Can't wait to buy this!
NL! You can put any amount of units in a floor as long as there is energy. You have five energy per floor to begin with which means you could put the imp and two of those units. So don't be afraid to grab an extra energy per floor since then you can place three normal units on each floor.
Also I don't know if you noticed but spikes don't get reduced like rage and regen. They stay at the same amount through the entire fight.
I love the series by the way. I can't wait for your next episodes. Pogged up beyond belief but I want my eggy boi to clutch his first win.
Yeah, of course. Go ahead and put that 0/20 champ behind the weaker units that CAN attack. Especially after saying "I gotta put my tank in front" right beforehand.
At this point I'm not even getting frustrated by that anymore, just another "oh silly egg" moment. The payoff when he actually DOES learn is worth it, and I am proud everytime I follow one of these series and I see his progress.
Honesty kinda glad you got bodied in this episode, knowing that things can go wrong quickly is gonna make for a much better viewing experience
I love this series, but NL you gotta start thinking about unit placement, why did you keep playing attack units infront of your 0 attack hero unit? It's job is to literally soak up all damage and tank, then get healed. Anyway, love this game, keep playing it and focus a bit more on unit placement (you also couldve killed the boss earlier if you just protected your rage unit instead of the 5/8 recruit).
Also, you can have 5 units per room. The reason why you keep thinking it's 2, is because you have 2 units which are each taking up 2 spaces, meaning you have 4 used spaces out of 5. Now here's the good stuff, you can either keep playing with 2 units, and take units that consume 3 spaces, OR, keep playing the same way, BUT, know that imps take up 1 space, so they're basically a free minion with a battlecry for you :)
This series is getting me all pogged up
Keep up the good work NL, loving this series :)
Hey NL, I know it sounds reasonable to protect your champion, but for someone like the Sentient, it’s not really optimal. Considering her high HP and 0 Attack, she’s better suited to soaking damage in the front and letting other units deal damage from the back. If it helps, you can view her as a 0 Cost wall.
Also, the imps can be useful since they’re basically free spells costing only 0 to deploy. Because of their 1 Capacity, it also gives them a niche for the instances where you have 4/5 Capacity in a room. Plus, if you intentionally kill one of your imps using something like the Torch spell, it frees up capacity for another imp and its Summon effect.
Just wanted to put my two cents in. Hoping to see you improve your play!
It is fun how he looked at his "cheat sheet" in order not to forget to thank the people for support. It's the egg we all know and love putting the effort to show his appreciation for his viewers xD
10:25 Playing Branded warrior behind the Sentient would've been better. You're healing the Sentient every turn so you're missing out on free soak for enemy damage. Also, for boss fights you'd want it to die first because it has 0 atk, and it'll soak up damage for the unit behind who would still be attacking.
Yeah I was disappointed he didn’t notice that also... and upgrade capacity! He only thinks you can place two units per level, the imp can go with two warriors on one floor. Capacity is the most limited resource by far in this game. Spells bs units is no match at all, gotta go capacity every time.
yeah... I saw that early combo and thought wow those 2 work well together... and then he put the tank behind the buffer...
I’m really enjoying this series and I’m super excited to learn the series alongside NL
I was actually really impressed with NL's card game prowess yesterday, guess the lesson to be taken here is to not overclock your brain
Still a pog series don't let it get you down :)
Dude this is like my most favourite new series! I hope it lasts a while.
Finally, another series where the egg lord makes a painful amount of misplays :)
haven't left a comment here before but just want to say big fan of this game in the regular rotation and your youtube and twitch have been nice to have during quarantine, keep up the great stuff!
Really glad you made this a series! Excited to see more play styles and mechanics!
This is the most excited I've been for a new series in a long time! It's a lot of fun to watch
I'm glad this game is getting another play
This seems like a cool game and it's very entertaining to watch you play it. Thanks NL!
I’m excited for this episode every day now. Thanks for keeping playing it
Excited for the series! Even more excited for the series after we hit the point where floor capacity is recognized
Can't wait to see him completely master the game within the next 300+ episodes, I'm along for the ride!
All aboard the Train of Misplays! Where we put our tanks on the back and don't check how much space each unit actually takes!
Jokes aside love this series keep it up!
Despite all the suboptimal plays, mad respect to you for going in on the bonus objectives early. Keep up the fantastic content!
I know that deckbuilders are NLs kryptonite but the way he played this was astonishingly painful to witness.
NL, you don’t just have 2 unit slots on each floor. There is a maximum “heat” you can play on each floor so you can sometimes play 3 units on a floor. Especially the welder helper who only has 1 heat
Also you kept playing units in front of your 0 attack champion, you want high attack units in the back
Putting the monster that needs heals in the back is some serious pog
Putting the Champion from this faction in the back is totally a fine option, but only once you've upgraded her to be Explosive even more, and once you've got a better tank option. (my fav so far is her in the back, and with the dude that gets bonus Max HP, and Spikes whenever he's healed in the front, and then you heal him whenever you DON'T need to damage the enemies in the line any further as they'll die, and heal the chick whenever you need to damage the enemies)
This is going to be a great series
Love this new series NL! Keep making the pog rain from the heavens brutha!
Hey NL! Love the new series, and all the changes and positive attitude on youtube/twitch! Been watching you for ~8 years! Hoping for another great 8, cheers!
i wasn't sure if anything could fill the eden shaped void in my heart but this is doing it. hope the algorithm treats you the same !
There has never, and will never be enough deck builder rouge-likes to satiate NLs never ending hunger for them.
Floor capacity and rear tank has been covered pretty well, but the Sting/Spikes confusion also unpogged me. He had Sting in the previous run! It seems like this tank at the front buffed with spikes would be a nice combo.
This game looks friggin rad. On my wishlist, def getting on Thursday
imagine for a moment putting your tanky unit who does no damage BEHIND your squishy unit who does damage
I’ve been waiting all day for this, the nl tries and episode one had me pogged out my mind excited for more
Loving this series!
Nl, each floor has 5 slots and each unit takes up 1 2 or 3 slots, you could have 2 branded warriors and an Imp, which this was painful to see but you are new to the game. Great content even with the goofs, keep it up!
Definitely digging this game so far, NL!
Make sure you remember how those challenges work. Only Non-Boss monster's got those spikes.
Bought the game after watching episode 1 thinking I could do better. I was wrong and am constantly reminded that you are in fact a God gamer. Keep up the excellent work
this morning slot is the most pogged slot by far. banger after banger
Nl, the imps have a floor coast of one so you can place it in the last fifth room slot that you usually have not used to this point
NL, I love this series, i love seeing your misplays and when you discover your misplays
i mean he didnt really discover the misplays, for the whole 32 mins he did play tank in the back...
I think ur content is GREAT! Good stuff northernlion!
High quality video, high quality series, high quality game
There's Monster time board game.... and then there's this game. Monster Train. I can't wait for this release.
