Shy street cat learns to trust again

  • Morris had been living outside for at least a year, and could easily be mistaken for a feral cat. But after we trapped him for a TNR (trap neuter return) project, it was clear that he had lived indoors before. There are tons of shy cats like Morris hiding in the back of a shelter cage somewhere. They need to be in a calm, quiet environment with a patient caregiver to rediscover their confidence. These cats have a lot of love to give!

I almost didn't see my current kitty in the shelter I went to because she was hiding in the corner away from all the kitties and actually hissed a little when i first pet her, but once I touched the base of her tail she pushed her butt into the air.
Now Princess Kitty Katara gets tummy rubs on demand via screaming at me
You guys do good work here.

I can relate! My little tabby was hiding in her cage and didn't care for people when I went to my local rescue, I asked the volunteers to help me pick a good fit, after a few questions they sat me in a private room with her. A few minutes later, she was stuck to me like glue and hiding her face in my neck. I'm glad that I trusted their judgment and would recommend everyone does the same when picking a friend for a life!

I can relate too! My first cat I adopted privately, but I have no doubt she'd be hiding in the back of the cage. Why? Because she hid inside our couch for the first month we had her. She only came out at night. But my friend said she had a cat to give away, because the cat was always hiding, and I wanted one, so I wasn't going to give up on this kitty.
She was the sweetest little girl. She showed compassion to our other pets. When our hamster escaped, she helped find him. And when my bunny had babies, she would find the ones that escaped the nest and let me know where they were (saving their lives.) I fell asleep with her on my hip every night, and woke up with her on my hip every morning, even though I sleep like I'm fighting the devil. I would roll over and she'd get right back on. She'd sit on my belly when I was sick, and be there when I was sad. She had four tough years, but thirteen amazing ones, where she was safe, loved, and supported. She deserved every year of that thirteen, and more.

I adopted an extremely shy cat, named Frodo, without ever having seen him. He hid at the shelter, went into a covered carrier, then left that to hide in a space behind my shower. I did not see him for 5 months, then began to catch glimpses of him, then he'd watch me fill his bowls, then I'd see him bolting through my apartment, then he began to watch me from a distance, then he'd play with a wand toy, then finally began to let me touch him. He is now a love bug, who sleeps with me, gets in my lap every chance he has, follows me around, and yet who is still so shy no one else has seen him in the 5 years he's lived with me. I am so glad I was patient with him, because he is very happy now.

Thank you for explaining the difference between a true feral and a dumped stray cat. I take care of a feral cat colony and everyone always ask why I don't find them homes. Its so hard to explain to them that a true feral is a wild animal not a pet. And while I have gained their trust, that means I'm part of the pack, not that they have miraculously become a pet you would give to a child.

Well... the youtuber was wrong in the definition of a feral cat.
He said feral cats have had no interactions with humans.
That is not necesarly entirely true.
Stray cat... easy to understand... STRAY... as in cats who have either gotten lost, escaped or dumped from their human homes.
Feral cat.... basicly a cat who has been raised in the wild. Not by humans.
But a feral cat CAN be friendly.
But feral cats are much higher alert because of tge raw nature.
So a feral cat is much more likely to be sceptic of humans.
But exampke in Turkey, where humans shower feral cats with love and attention... the feral cats therefor through hundreds of years learn that humans are friendly and helpfull. Like a big brother;)

If they have weight issues in addition to food insecurity, you can try either a feeding dish or a ball that makes them work for their food. My semi-feral fortunately does not have food issues but is still very timid when encountered on foot. She loves lap time but is still learning to trust when I walk past her. She used to get out of the way out of fear. I still haven't been able to pick her up but I will when I feel the time is right. Shes been with me for a few years but helping her learn trust is a slow process.

At first he didn't purr, but now you can hear him in the next room. He mostly lays upside-down so you have easy access to his huge, white belly. This is the very reason that I have a feral Mom cat in one of my bathrooms.
Two years ago, a Tortie showed up outside the house. She was poaching birds coming to my feeder. She'd hide in the Hydrangeas below the feeders and wait until the birds would eat seed from the ground. She got 4 Cardinals in one day. Not wanting to lose any more birds, I figured I'd feed her, then trap and see how feral she was. Turns out she was feeding a few kittens. She disappeared a few days later only to be found on the side of the state road a couple hundred yards away.
When I took Mom to get tested and fixed, the vet called and informed me she was pretty sick and had just about every parasite known to cats. After a couple days stay at the vet, she came home to live with me. I didn't want her, but I don't want to find her dead on the road. She is making slow progress, but progress is progress.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, if you have a fur baby, please give them a little extra love, you never know when they'll be gone. And if you don't have a pet, then tell a beloved person you love them.
All the love you give and receive, I think that's what we carry with us throughout this life and the next.

Greetings from Sweden! Your channel gave me the knowledge and courage to help a family of cats that slept in a shed on my auntie’s property. The mother turned out to be the sweetest most trusting kitty. Her and her four kittens have all found forever homes (one kitten went to my grandparents!) after they were socialised in the nick of time. Were it not for your channel I wouldn’t’ve know that I CAN help. Your impact is worldwide. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We have had our rescue for nearly three years. She was found with her kittens under a porch just before winter set in. It was clear that she had been with humans once. She had many health problems; broken teeth and abcesses, early stage kidney disease, etc. We were able to get her the dental surgery she needed (she is now toothless and couldn't be happier to be on wet food for the rest of her life) and got her back to full health. She is the sweetest cat I have ever had and loves that we love her. She trusts us now, and knows if we have to trim her claws or give her medicine that it will be okay.
It upsets us whenever we think about what she had to go through before we came into her life. An animal is a life-long responsibility and should be treated as such.

One of our cats, Moose, showed up at our house in our old neighborhood. Either someone moved and left him, or he escaped. No one in the neighborhood knew where he belonged, so we took him with us when we moved. He became instant friends with our oldest cat Nippy. They would run though the house doing their “war whoop”. Moose warmed up to me more than my wife. I feel so happy when I see him sleeping on his back without a care in the world. My wife and I(and our group) take care of feral colonies in our town. They are all cared for and looked after. Keep up the great work!

Wonderful work resocialising Morris - he'll make someone a great companion. The only trouble when they've struggled to find enough food is stopping them getting fat - one of our rescues would just constantly eat if we let him. Fortunately he's not aggressive towards our other cats when it comes to food, but we have to make sure he doesn't hoover up their leftovers!

I miss a sweet big old cat who was a stray around the apartments. Several people were giving him food and a place to stay, but he'd always want back out when I'd let him in and try to get him to stay. He panicked and refused when I tried to get him in to the vet for a second visit, and he had fought the vet on the first visit. He was not bad, not truly aggressive, just scared and confused. He was sweet, but he wouldn't stay. I didn't know the others who were helping him, so couldn't coordinate with them. -- In April, the management staff changed, and they culled ALL the strays / feral around the complex. Only recently have I heard any cat outside again. -- I would have gladly had that old cat for a permanent friend if I could've. But also, there's a two-pet limit and at the time, I still had my senior cat plus a kitten who'd arrived and invited herself in. (She was lucky she wasn't out when they got the strays: She was inside recovering after getting spayed and her shots.) -- So the big old lummox, only a few years old, a shy but friendly and loving tomcat...was taken (-don't-know-where, and I hope he got adopted rather than killed. And I miss him. -- My senior cat lost his battle with old age and illness in May, so I have just the kitten now, almost a year old. Always before, a cat has arrived on my doorstep to be taken in, or else friends have had one, but this time, it looks like I will have the very tough choice of picking one cat from a shelter, when they all need someone. So, well, I've always felt they choose who they want to be with and we bond. So I hope when the time comes that there will be that right cat and I'm the right person for them. Meanwhile, I hope the old lovable stray got a home, plus the others I saw around, including a kitten. They can't help how they ended up homeless. I think it's true for many humans too, homeless or not.

Even though I can’t donate, This makes me glad that my family has helped one feral cat. Where we live, I don’t see a lot of feral cats, only a few outdoor cats that we know the owners of. But this feral cat, (who already had a notch in his ear) was suffering from a terrible injury on the back of his neck (probably from a mean dog or more likely a mountain lion,(we live in Utah)). We didn’t have the funds or resources to bring him into the vet but gave him food regularly, and a safe shelter. We worried that he would have trouble through the winter so my dad put a heating pad inside his shelter with a camera to monitor him. When he discovered the heating pad he would curl up and sleep so soundly. His wound is looking much better now after a couple months (fur grown back and just a small spot left to heal). Even though he’s feral, I think he likes sticking around us.
