I foster cats and it drives me nuts when people say they couldn't do it, they'd be too sad to give them up. Fosters aren't cold-hearted. We've changed our mindset from me-oriented to animal-in-need oriented.

    • @bkitteh6295
      @bkitteh6295 Місяць тому

I'm sure it does drive you nuts, but you know deep down that we're talking about OUR weakness in the face of YOUR strength, right?
I do know what you mean though. In fact, on 1 level I just did it above . It's the same " You're so strong! I could NEVER do that!" that one gets from folks when diagnosed w/ a serious illness or experiencing the death of a loved one. I know these folks care about me as I shrug and think to myself, "Yeah, you could. What else are you gonna do?"
Loss is so scary to most of us that having some kind of incantantation: "I could never _______ .like you have/do." really = "I am not superhuman, so _________ can never happen to me. It would be unbearable."
However, folks like you and the Flatbush people have wisely worked to do is, as you said, change your mindset. Otherwise, what else are you gonna do, really? What I wonder is, what process do upu all ho through to reach that new mindset? And do most have fairly similar mindsets eventually reached, or is there a lot of wild variation in the answers most fosters eventually give to "How can you give them up? I could never do that! "

I concur wholeheartedly, I never use the possessive "my" when referring to the cat I co exist with. I suppose under human laws I own her and am certainly responsible for her.
However she is her own person, with a unique personality, even is she isn't human. If nothing else I could say that I am her human, this would be a more accurate way of putting it.

    • @gordontheengineswifedr.nirmal

Cats are superior tbh, it is our human egos that cannot grapple with this. That is why for all the many strengths we have - the things we can create and innovate - we are extremely faulty. Cats faults, if any, are more of miscommunications between the species. There r hideous, fake, cruel, and morally corrupt people - a good amount of society can induce a cringe. However, cats are perfect. Even ones with birth defects are still lovable and adorable. They don’t have the ego hang ups we humans do. They only attack us in defense, as they were taught - yet they are capable of the love most humans cannot comprehend - a non romantic love that is so good, so pure, the poets may cry and artists scream in an attempt to capture its representation. The cat - a soft, plushy creature with a face that stares straight into ur soul as a portal to heaven should. They deserve respect and love for this, and we should be honoured to have them in our lives.

@@gordontheengineswifedr.nirmal I'm inclined to agree, humans only disappoint, a cat has never let me down! That comment was well put I have to say, it encapsulates my feelings on the matter.
It's a symbiotic relationship we have whereas we tend to their physical requirements (Food, shelter) while showering them with love they are just themselves and when we receive the love back it is so life enhancing.
Their love is evidenced in a myriad of ways, from the way they claim us by rubbing against our legs to make us art of their lives to the anxiety they suffer when we are out for extended periods of time.

The adoption fee is there for two reasons: to cover the costs of medical, food, etc, and also to discourage any old rando from walking in and getting an animal. If it were that easy, abusers and dog fighters would come in droves to get animals they intended to dump or kill. By charging, it helps to make sure that only the people who are serious about wanting a pet come to get one.

    Okay.

    • @tommypetraglia4688
      @tommypetraglia4688 4 роки тому +15

I'm crying cuz when I was made homeless I made sure my sweet little floofy princess ChikP was placed in the bestest home.
She got a mossy slate roof cape in the woods with an older couple living among trees, stonewalls and wooded paths besides a brook with the bonus of little tigercat brother, Skittles, I rescued from the city, behind the shelter I was living.
Meanwhile I got 6 years homeless the last 3 of which living in my car.
And tho now I am housed, my greatest lament being unable to have a cat... prbly ever again.
This after a life of having cats since I was 10.
I had a long-haired MaineCoon mutt I rescued from a feral litter when I waz young so many years ago and first got to living alone.
I called him Tsunami cuz of the regal way he held himself with a color and a coat so soft and floofy, unmistakable like no other there ever was and knew darn well he was esp pretty ...
      - and what a friendly kiiity he grew up to be... would flop on the sidewalk to let passers-by rub his belly whenever we were out front and sidle-up swishy-tail to anyone, even the mailman, imagine that.
Then around age 3 he went missing and I called and whistled and hung up signs, combing through backyards empty sheds and old garages, shining a light under decks and porches and knocking on every door that would answer... but no Tsunami.
My search was so tenacious i was certain if he got hit I'd at least find a trace or word of his death ... but no Tsunami
Nearly 3 months had gone by and my hope was waning but still I'd make my regular loop, if only to delude myself for one more day.
It was a Saturday after half day of work, I parked my truck at my home and set out on my route, when 2 blocks down and around 2 corners I came upon that old woman's house the one with the front yard flower-filled just as she was tending her garden.
We talked about her flowers and plants and what a lovely day while she clipped buds and pulled weeds when suddenly looking about, I could not believe my eyes... there thru the picture window was Tsunami sprawled across the back of her couch, asleep in the sun.
I'd recognize him anywhere by the face and that coat
My heart skipped a beat but I held back saying only, That's a real nice looking kitty you have there... what's his name?
She said, Oh yes that's Jasper, my husband's name, we were together nearly 50 years, and he showed up a month to the day since Jasper died. He's my husband come back to me... I kno because he never leaves the sight of me. I'm so lucky he came.
I was so terribly lonely before then. He gives me everything to live for, I didn't know what to do with the rest of my life before he came to me.
With that I gave her a hug and said, I'm so sorry about your loss but I kno Jasper is lucky to have found his way to you. It's clear you are both well-loved and meant for each other
God bless you and have a wonderful day.
As I walked away I turned to look in time to see her inside stroking Tsunami's fur, she lovingly smiling at him... he pushing against her hand, his eyes squinted shut
They do not belong to us. The Animal Spirits know which go to who, and I was just fostering him, allowing him to bloom until his determined place was ready for him.
I envision the call he received telling him it was time to leave and always wondered if, at the end of the path, he paused to give a look back - one final time
To this day my heart aches and is lifted all in one.

Letting them go is bittersweet, but it does get easier. As Kitten Lady says, the goal is goodbye. I think of fostering as a safe place to land before they go to their forever homes. My job is to give them love and socializing and a few house rules.
I give them pep talks when it's time for them to go: "I've raised you up and it's time for you to find your forever home now. You're going to have a whole new family who will love you forever, and I want you to be the amazing kitty I raised you up to be, okay? You're not just a pet; you have a mission: to go out in the world and be an ambassador for all the animals still looking for their families."

This video has a very important message about fostering cats, or any animal really. Fostering isn't about the person, it's about caring for an animal until they can be given a home where they're loved. There's nothing wrong with feeling sad about having to let the animal go. Something like that is going to be difficult but you're giving that animal a forever home where they'll be loved to the fullest. Where they can be given full attention and love. Letting go of a foster animal will be hard, but at the very least you'll know that because of you, you gave that animal a completely new life.

SImiliar to how my cat "Random" aquired me. I drive truck for a living. I had parked at a truck stop to use the bathroom. When I came back to my truck there was a torn up white and grey adult cat sitting on my fuel tank step screaming at me, as if how dare I not leave the open for him to let himself in.
That was two years ago, he's been with me in the truck since. He's by far the most vocal and affectionate cat I've ever had and is incredibly attached to me. To this day I have no idea why he was outside, and I don't want to know. He's in bed when I sleep, on the floor beside me while I drive, and always lays where he can open his eyes and see me.
When I get fuel or have to go in to a customer he hops up on the front seat or dash and watches me either thru the windshield or in the side mirrors as I walk towards the back of the truck. He's a very good boy. He was just some random cat a truck stop. I didnt intent on keeping him, now I cant imagine not having him.

Wish I had the strenght to do the same. When I tried in about 5 years I fostered 4 cats and then adopted all of them. Still love them like the first day we met. Totally admire what you are doing !

I swear these aren't tears. They're such beautiful kitties!
The ear thing reminds me of my Amber for the first few weeks after she came to me. She'd give me ear baths, always tickled. She still gets all the love I can give her because she's my best little buddy :)

If there’s one thing I love, it’s people who help homeless kitties, all over the world. 💖💖💖

On god, thank you for humanizing these cats. The more people that see these are living, thinking, and feeling creatures the less likely they'll be to abandon them when they're too loud or too playful or just too hairy or big to be convenient.

Another beautiful story. I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. If I lived in Brooklyn, it would be my honour to foster these beautiful kittens. So I do the next best thing. I'm a monthly donor.
Thank you and God bless you for the work that you do. ❤❤❤

Daw, Sonny when Sal came back: Why you so scared bro? These creatures are chill, and they have the best food! Now lets play! I missed you!

Love cats who have a weird thing for ears. When our Hobbes was a kitten, I used to wake up at 3am to him licking directly into my ear. Multiple nights in a row. What fantastic little weirdos.

There is nothing, NOTHING like being climbed on by a bunch 'o kittens. To see their loving llittle faces looking up at ya as they try to get to your face. Its worth every little prickly pinch n tiny claws."mew mew mew" lil angels.🥳🥳❤❤🥰🥰😇😇🙏🙏🔥🔥
