In Germanic mythology, Thor (Old Norse: Þórr) is a hammer-wielding god associated with lightning, thunder, storms, sacred groves and trees, strength, the protection of mankind and also hallowing and fertility. Besides Old Norse Þórr, the deity occurs in Old English as Þunor, in Old Frisian as Thuner, in Old Saxon as Thunar, and in Old High German as Donar, all ultimately stemming from the Proto-Germanic theonym *Þun(a)raz, meaning 'Thunder'.
Thor is a prominently mentioned god throughout the recorded history of the Germanic peoples, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania, to the Germanic expansions of the Migration Period, to his high popularity during the Viking Age, when, in the face of the process of the Christianization of Scandinavia, emblems of his hammer, Mjölnir, were worn and Norse pagan personal names containing the name of the god bear witness to his popularity.
Due to the nature of the Germanic corpus, narratives featuring Thor are only attested in Old Norse, where Thor appears throughout Norse mythology. Norse mythology, largely recorded in Iceland from traditional material stemming from Scandinavia, provides numerous tales featuring the god. In these sources, Thor bears at least fifteen names, is the husband of the golden-haired goddess Sif, is the lover of the jötunn Járnsaxa, and is generally described as fierce eyed, with red hair and red beard. With Sif, Thor fathered the goddess (and possible valkyrie) Þrúðr; with Járnsaxa, he fathered Magni; with a mother whose name is not recorded, he fathered Móði, and he is the stepfather of the god Ullr. By way of Odin, Thor has numerous brothers, including Baldr. Thor has two servants, Þjálfi and Röskva, rides in a cart or chariot pulled by two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr (that he eats and resurrects), and is ascribed three dwellings (Bilskirnir, Þrúðheimr, and Þrúðvangr). Thor wields the hammer Mjölnir, wears the belt Megingjörð and the iron gloves Járngreipr, and owns the staff Gríðarvölr. Thor's exploits, including his relentless slaughter of his foes and fierce battles with the monstrous serpent Jörmungandr-and their foretold mutual deaths during the events of Ragnarök-are recorded throughout sources for Norse mythology.
Into the modern period, Thor continued to be acknowledged in rural folklore throughout Germanic-speaking Europe. Thor is frequently referred to in place names, the day of the week Thursday bears his name (modern English Thursday derives from Old English þunresdæġ, 'Þunor's day'), and names stemming from the pagan period containing his own continue to be used today, particularly in Scandinavia. Thor has inspired numerous works of art and references to Thor appear in modern popular culture. Like other Germanic deities, veneration of Thor is revived in the modern period in Heathenry.

The resurgence of this culture and belief system (or however you like to name it) is incredibly fascinating. I didn't get a chance to watch Vikings or many shows until the pandemic hit and I had more free time at home. So, I'm a bit late in catching up.
I also had time this winter to do more research on my ancestry, thankfully. My grandfather 3X's back was part of the 15th regiment in the Union Army in the American Civil War. He was new in the country and was already 28 years old with a few children when he volunteered. It's a great and tragic story about this unit of entirely (but for a few exceptions) Norwegians. They were known for their incredible bravery and skill and quiet often were put on the frontline of battles or in impossible positions. They had terrible losses but it was more from disease than deaths in fighting. They often had little-no food, and had to sleep in the freezing rain with no cover or fire, while marching 10-20 miles a day at times.
I hope to do more research on this and maybe some formal writing. There are a few published books that have the men's letters compiled. It was interesting that even though most were Lutheran they still wrote/spoke about Thor and other Norse beliefs. They spoke about having thousands of years of fighting in their veins and fought like they couldn't die. In observations from non-Norwegians, it was said many times that they fought as if they enjoyed it and had a deep sense of duty to what was their new country as they had a real moral outrage over slavery. Anyways, I could go on but it is such a terrific segment of history swept under the rug. Still, in a time of such deep divide it was inspiring to read about people who were willing to fight and die so bravely and honorably for the freedom of another.

A lot of new and awesome concepts here! To speak to the warrior class worshiping Thor. Mjölnir pendants became common in the late Viking Age for warriors to wear. Just as Roman warriors wore Hercules’ club pendants. Just one of many similarities between the two. Great stuff as always.

I will add: Tor/Thor is also representing bravery. "Du har Tor" is a saying in Norway. Same with his sons Magni (Might/Strength) and Modi (Bravery). Tor is also representing the workers with his strength and hammer/Axe. Blacksmiths, carpenters, woodworkers, etc. Also, the hammer is a metaphor for penis. Hammertime

Been waiting for this video since you posted your video about Mjölnir.
I can't thank you enough for your content and videos you put out.
I was interested in Norse paganism a couple years back but couldn't grasp the myths for what they were and tried to interpret them literally and turned away very quickly as I was atheist and turned away from Christianity for the same reason not being able to take it literally.
I had another experience and pull to the old ways recently and came across your channel as i started reading our sources and other books. The first video I watched of yours was the Mjölnir video and it was the same day my Mjölnir arrived in the mail and I have watched all of your content since then and gone back to the Playlist and videos again and again learning something new each time.

Something that is rarely mentioned is that Tor used "protective equipment". Tor was very strong, but to cope with Mjølner he used Iarngreiper, a type of iron gloves, to hold it, and he often had to use the belt Megingjord to be able to lift it. It was said of Megingjord that the more you tightened it, the stronger you became. In addition, it was so that Mjølner could be as big or as small as the holder wanted.

I think of Thor as the out-of-control teenager in the pantheon. In a way, he represents raw emotion. He often wants to attack first. He is quick to anger. His hammer is a way to control and project his emotions, otherwise lightning might strike everywhere. This, in some ways, reflects the idea of electromagnetism. How do I focus and control my energies? How do I invoke Thor as a form of increasing and projecting my energy with focused force? If we think of Gods as myths about aspects of our own nature, then Thor reminds me that my prefrontal cortex always needs to be focused else my amygdala runs away with emotion.

Another reason why the gods are depicted as looking like people is when we see them either in deep meditation, riturals or in outer-body experiences; our conciousness percieves them and their attributes in a human form for us to understand or they themselves chose these forms so that we can better understand

Thor is the calm in the eye of the storm. All of our ancestors paid attention to patterns in nature, no matter where it is we are from. Compare the pattern of the images you depict in this video with the Lorenz attractor: compare to Claire R Ferrer's "Chisma" in her book "Living Life's Circle: A Mescalero Apache Cosmovision."
Ratatosk is the three roosters and Thor is Odin Villi and Ve. The Triad, tripod, is stability; stability is Stillness, calm, balance, inertia.
Look to the Stars. What we call the Big Dipper is part of the constellation Mjolnir; half of the Hammerhead is the two stars opposite of the cup being the other half of the hammerhead. The handle stretching from Polaris, which is at once the eagle who sits atop yggdrasil and Asgard. The Little Dipper is the hawk that sits between the Eagle's eyes. Mjolnir spins throughout the year. Thor is at the center guarding Asgard, his hammer spins with the Whirlwind, the Stars, but he ever stays in the center of all things, the epitome of Dynamics without emotion, perfect balance. The three stars which make the handle the Big Dipper being lightning coming out of mjolnir, the three stars representing Odin vili and Ve. Thunder rides a black horse, or as the Mongolian band the Hu put it in Hutinese "Sugaan Essena"; The true Secret the Berserker's supposed rage and the secret of life itself: compare to Shaska of the Cossacks. A Berserker, a master of martial arts who can move with such Dynamics while conserving energy; opponents seeing the rage of the storm while missing the calm within the eye of the storm. The discipline of the berserk tragically forgotten during the Viking age, because people were more interested in carousing then having a sincere relationship with the ancestors. It seems to me to be related to the mental discipline of the yogi found in India, as many of our Traditions are evidently Vedic in essence. Look at the amazing things that yogis do and understand.
The axe is the masculine, the distaff the feminine, the hammer is as yin and yang. The marriage of sky and Earth, masculine and feminine. Again a Triad masculine feminine Egre.
My eyes awaken the well disappears. I can say no more at this time: from the Seidr I speak these things. This has not come from books but from what I see in the well of mimir.
The riddle is spoken, the puzzle is yours to solve.

I have a small statue of Thor in my kitchen- to remind me to be strong and have courage in an everyday way-
The connection between all things is so important but humans don’t always see it and we all suffer for it, just my thoughts, thank you for giving us scholarly references to check out❗️✌🏼

Good video. I don’t think medieval or ancient people would have conceived of things like the “electromagnetic field of the Earth” as such. However, they may well have had ideas of things like a life force of the Earth, and seen that as where lightening strikes come from, and ideas of every living thing having a similar life force, etc. Which may amount to the same sort of thing, but I feel a bit uneasy about using precise modern scientific language for it, because they almost certainly weren’t defining it with the same parameters and concepts. But still, it makes sense at a spiritual level.

Not meaning to criticise but only to observe, I can see Thor being the representative of a number of different forces/qualities with the singular exception of the Earth's magnetic field. That instance of electromagnetic force is a relatively modern discovery and even if you'd given an ancient person a compass and showed them how to use it, if left to their own devices, who knows what kind of theory they would have come up with to explain HOW it worked.
Btw, you run an excellent channel and I look forward to every episode!

Yeah but the aura or individual energy field is also connected to a greater field called the aether. This is why when someone dies or suffering greatly over 5000 miles away, you might feel it even though you know nothing actually of it at the time.
We're all connected. Even to those who have already passed.

It's about time someone else on the internet also related Thor to the magnetosphere. I thought I was the only one. I'll have to read her book now. Did she also relate ice giants to comets? I don't know how the ancients would know that comets contain ice though, but it's a fun idea to think about. My major is geography and I wanted to write an honors paper about geography and storm gods, but the religion professors thought I needed their coursework before doing such interdisciplinary work. Norse mythology's parallels with nature is really interesting the more you compare the two. I've been wondering if there could be a connection between Mjölnir and the Ankh as well, but my knowledge of Egypt still needs improving.

Interesting thing that is always mentioned but I only recently looked into was the connection between thor and indra in the rig veda, indra is the thunderer in the oldest texts of india who was described as a god of the people much like thor, fort destroyer and dragon slayer (sigmund paralllel). also they keep referring to a sweet soma drink in the rig veda which no one knows is but it's probably a mead analogue given that the main feature of soma is that it's sweet and alcoholic. Also on the rituals between the sky god and earth mother in europe we still have the festivals of may day and mid summer where people elect a may queen and king basic like old beauty pagent there is no real marriage or stuff like that but it's the symbolism that counts.

I´ve heard that Japanese farmers would pray to storms so mushrooms would grow. Recently, scientists managed to simulate lightning and where the false lightning hit the ground, mushrooms would spring up. Just a snippet of thought.
How did Norse people view mushrooms? Are there any legends or mentions about them? Hello from Slovakia

Thunder, of course, can rattle our spine and instantly have an effect on us especially as our ancestors huddled scared in their huts. But thunder is caused by lightning, and the electrical discharge of lightning converts nitrogen in the air to solid form and fertilizes the soil. So I view the concept of Thor as more of a lightning power than one of thunder (which is a by product.)

A way to connect the theory of Þór being lifeforce with him being the electromagnetic field and the storm is that lightning is involved in it all. In abiogenesis labs have determined that the start of life was likely the raw materials taking a sudden infusion of high energy to kickstart the self replication process in proto-life.
