Loki is a god in Norse mythology. According to some sources, Loki is the son of Fárbauti (a jötunn) and Laufey (mentioned as a goddess), and the brother of Helblindi and Býleistr. Loki is married to Sigyn and they have two sons, Narfi or Nari and Váli. By the jötunn Angrboða, Loki is the father of Hel, the wolf Fenrir, and the world serpent Jörmungandr. In the form of a mare, Loki was impregnated by the stallion Svaðilfari and gave birth to the eight-legged horse Sleipnir. Loki's relation with the gods varies by source; he sometimes assists the gods and sometimes behaves maliciously towards them. Loki is a shape shifter and in separate incidents appears in the form of a salmon, a mare, a fly, and possibly an elderly woman named Þökk (Old Norse 'thanks'). Loki's positive relations with the gods end with his role in engineering the death of the god Baldr, and eventually, Odin's specially engendered son Váli binds Loki with the entrails of one of his sons; in the Prose Edda, this son, Nari or Narfi, is killed by another son of Loki who is also called Váli.

He certainly had an effect on more people wanting to think highly of Loki. But most of where Loki worship came from was via Wicca and variants of satanism.
The whole Loki thing has been around and an annoyance within the pagan world since before Disney did their work on the Thor comics and it mostly came out of the “I want to be different” and “wahh rules bad” pagans that would gravitate to anything that would take them in and permit poor behavior and degeneracy.
In the world today people feel disconnected or shunned more than ever. Loki represents this to some, like myself. An outcast from the beginning.
There is a lot of antihero themes as of late, and maybe this has an effect.
I for one can separate movie and the world we live in. But for some, they get a feeling or perspective from the depiction I.e. Marvel that attracts them to Loki.
With Loki being a catalyst for change, as we get older, most changes are negative. Thor and Mjolnir are the things that keep negative change from taking root in us and keep the final change at bay.

He is fluid whilst it is steadfast, hard and solid.
The changing is opposite to the unchangeable.

I'm an American and as confused as you about this fixation on loki. I choose to simply keep a respectful distance from him. I think it's part of the "Look at me, I'm doing something shocking" vibe that goes on.

This is not new and it's not from the U.S.
I think it's a lot of the things the video brings up, plus Loki is one of the few things Americans know about the Norse myths. I think some of it stems from a comparison to Christianity also. Like entering Thor into a religious debate seems more ridiculous somehow than Loki. Growing up I heard someone joke about how a Greek classmate loved Zeus and it was a decent jab because Zeus seemed more like a cartoon than Jesus. Probably grows out of something like that. Also maybe some of it comes from a bit of a Christian perspective also. Like Thor is more of a pacifist Jesus type in America, probably in part because Marvel heroes are all pacifist Jesus types, that is the most dignified behavior in American culture and because the writers probably subscribe to the pacifist ideology. And Loki is the antithesis of being dignified, so he would be a more fitting representation as an alternative religious perspective. Plus he fucked a horse and that's funny.

I can't speak for others, but Loki came to me in physical form, saved me from suicide. We joke that he is Ash and his followers are his pokemon, bc he's gotta catch 'em all. Most of my friends who work with or worship him say the same things as me: he shows unconditional love for the outcasts and the abused. I personally feel it has to do with the fear based ostracization of his own children by the other gods. Loki is the reason I'm still here to type this. His good chaos has kept me sane and brought my kids and I joy. His "bad" chaos has been brought against my enemies without me seeking it. I have strong emotional connection to him. When he appears for us, it's a very tall and lean muscled man with a somewhat androgynous face, wild curly red hair, a shit-eating grin, and flaming eyes. This is my personal experience. My "worship" of him is more of a personal relationship. I speak with him rather than pray, and his altar is a loving gift between friends rather than a requirement.

Loki isn't neccassarily the change, but he's the spark, the trigger.
I don't see him as good or evil, I see him as neutral. The neutral force that causes changes.
He is the spark that triggers the creation of the heartbeat (=Mjölnir) for life (=Thor), but also the one that triggers the death of summer/light (=Balder).
And, that my friend is why I carry Mjolnir in my left as a Lothbrok descendant😂

This single video has brought more clarity to what Loki is than any other video I have seen to date. Thank you, and the word "catalyst" is the easiest way to recognize what Loki is.
Hypothesis: Loki as a personification of (the Instigation of) Change is afraid and beatable by Thor as a Personification of Life Force because Life can adapt and eventually thrive in the changed circumstances. And even Thor's death during Ragnarök is not the end of Life, but yet another beginning, however much Loki would like to end it all as the little Spark fighting alongside Surtr, the Very Big All Engulfing Fire.
My theory about why so many of my fellow Americans venerate Loki is that there's this weird mindset throughout many American subcultures of people seeing themselves as the loaner, outsider, "no one understands me" & "I'm chaos" kind of person.
I blame the fear/paranoia tactics of many politicians + the lack of good & easily affordable mental health care.
American culture, unlike many other cultures, promotes and encourages folk to be their authentic self. Community is not something everyone loves or even has a fancy for. American culture leaves those people be. Its a live and let live type of culture. Now, of course, other ideals/cultures have (recently) been polluting the American way, good news is we are slowly working our way back.
I took a trip to Ireland in 2014 with my Rugby team. Ollie Campbell was the Irish rugby legend who helped found my RC. What I found, in Irish culture, is that theres a general dislike for those who are less social, however they typically let people be.
So its not a "subculture." It is THE culture. Fear and paranoia created by politicians is unlikely to have any real effect

Some sort of obsession with Loki’s connection with chaos. I think it is a form of rebellion against the social norms. Most of the people that claim to honor Loki I noticed are members of the LBGTQ group too.
It's all because the Marvel Loki actor is so handsome. People worship him, rather than the real one.

The reason for the sudden popularity of Loki is the Marvel movies, don't look any further. To me, Loki's energy in the world is similar to the energy of Lila in Hinduism and in Tantra Yoga, which symbolises the "Divine play", the dance between Shiva and Shakti (the Male and Female elements) and the impredictability of Life. Loki is supposedly male AND female, a playful trickster and forever changing his bodily shape to affect his environment, so perhaps there's a link there.
I think the reason loki fears Thor is because of the life force given to man who are the only creatures who actively devise methods to slow or stop change.
And can be change itself by inventing. Life can live through change, can be change itself and will still be after the last change, cause it ever has. Life ist going on, no matter what. Even if some places of the nature were dead (after a vulcanic eruption in iceland f.e.) the life itself will come back. At first plants and then animals and humans will return. But life will always be. And Thor and Mjölnir represant the force of life of the humans and animals. Because of our believe in spirits and souls, which resemble this force, these two and them can last after death itself (and maybe after ragnarök) Even after we are dead (our final change, our personal ragnarök) we can cross the bridge and get to odin or to hel.

To try to answer your question about US folks following Loki: I think you pretty much touched on all the reasons Loki became popular in the US. Marvel did bring him more into the spotlight. Focusing on him as a catalyst of change, he is seen as a trickster spirit/God (in modern pagan circles here). We're (US folks) going through not only a lot of changes but the desire for change as well. Many millenials do feel stuck (can't speak for Gen Z) and having a spirit/God that can create a catalyst of change in our life is very desirable. I myself had an intense moment of change in my life and all evidence pointed to the...I guess energies is the best word (forces?)...at work bing very in line with Loki. It was stressful, it was terrifying to go through the uncertainties, but in the end I ended up with tools to make a better life for myself. This resonates with many of the stories involving Loki which result in the treasured items of the Gods like Mjolnir, Draupnir, etc. I've listened to many US pagans who follow Loki telling very similar stories with that same motif. Interestingly, though many of these experiences can be frightening to downright traumatic, those who follow Loki see it as a gift because of the lessons they learned and the "tools" (tangible or intangible) they ended up gaining which helped improve their life situation. It's a love of what we often see as chaos, seeing it as not inherintly evil (and not inherintly good either), but seeing what chaos can offer should we be vigilant enough to grasp an opportunity we otherwise would not have had should that force not have entered our lives. Generally he is experienced as a very close friend. I think also the suffering Loki goes through is something that resonates deep down. The way he is written and portrayed gives the feeling that if we were to speak directly to him about one's "darker" side or "shadow" side he would hold little or no judgment because of his own actions portrayed in the stories. He is very human. That said, I doubt he would be so popular if it weren't for the social upheavals we're experiencing. Things feel chaotic and uncertain, so a chaotic entity who is not wholly evil (but instead well rounded and very human-like) would be one to go to for guidance. He's not my main diety but I have a special place in my heart and in my practice for him. I tend to hold that he is more of a helper "shamanic" (for lack of better words) spirit than what most people define as a "God". Though to be fair, to me those terms can be very fuzzy. I hope that helped. :)

Self proclaimed "Avatars of Loki", are just another way for less than spectacular sociopaths to feel good about themselves.
I started worshiping Loki before I ever heard of MCU Loki. I worship him because he understands and doesn't deny misery and pain. He calls it what it is and doesn't try to feign happiness unlike Odin and the others. He puts up with discomfort for the sake of getting shit done and I can relate since doing basic tasks like cleaning my room causes me extreme bodily pain in my legs. He also calls out the bullshit of the other gods and I've had the misfortune of growing up with addicts and having to call them out for stealing money, irreplaceable heirlooms. And jewelry I got when I was a baby as part of a 100 years old or more family tradition. I also had an online friend who was obsessed with happiness, psychology, and atheism {anti-theism} to the point I had to tell him off for trying to make me leave Norse-Kemetic Paganism among other things. Loki also helps to protect Asgard and by extension Midgard in both Þrymskviða and Fjölsvinnsmál if I remember correctly. Nevermind that a lot of us Loki worshipers also take into account later folklore like Loka Táttur. I don't take the myths literally because if I did that would mean most of the gods are dead not just Loki. Loki doesn't really have a habit of harming humans in the myths anyways, so I don't see why I should fear him when both Thor and Odin are more likely to harm humans than he is as per the myths. I'm not saying he's harmless since no being is truly harmless and I probably wouldn't worship if he couldn't kick ass and take names. I worship Set and Anubis as well who some Kemetics don't like because of the stuff they do in the myths, so I honestly don't care about what Loki does in the myths, which includes the Baldr myth{who I don't care about at all}.

@AsatruWoman I actually have a foot that's twisted outward and so all of my weight actually gets put on my right leg for your information. Corrective surgery would leave me with the inability to walk for at least a year. Never mind happening to learn how to walk again as my doctor has told me at least fifteen times. Life long stroke survivor here. I literally couldn't stand for very long even when I was super skinny from not being able to swallow for 3 years. I spent eight years of my life in physical f****** therapy b****. Give me a break. Not everyone can just exercise all day without passing the f*** out and going to the hospital.. I actually almost broke my leg twice working out because I cannot put weight on my left leg moron.
The Trickster archetype is the one that "reverses the flow". It seems to me that's in the ballpark of "catalyst", and Loki certainly does reverse things, and it should be noted that sometimes they need to be reversed (Thor needs a hammer to turn the tide against the Jotuns, Odin needs a steed that can "slip" out of ordinary states of consciousness, etc). So I don't say why Loki wouldn't be considered a sort of trickster.
I also don't see why such a being would not be invoked at times, in times when a change is clearly needed--just as he might have been invoked, via sympathetic magic, in his chained aspect to keep the forces of chaos down. Loki doesn't ONLY bring about Ragnarok, and perhaps we can even wonder if Ragnarok itself is needed in some way, but in any case change--a reversal, a catalyst--is often very much in need.
One way Loki is certainly "invoked," in a way, is to tell the stories & myths, in many of which he figures prominently. THAT we are certainly called upon to do (it's not enough simply to READ the stories; you have to TELL them!), though whether this constitutes an indirect form of "worship" might be debated. But telling a story with Loki in it, whether he works for good or for ill, is a sort of invocation either of Loki himself (should he make some mischief that ends up benefiting the Gods), or of the forces that hold him down (if he should be primed to bring on Ragnarok)...Yes, I get that new-agers can run with a ball way past the endzone, and crash into the stands--it just seems there's a line to be drawn between leaving the Loki archetype too inert and unattended, and taking him to ridiculous levels of excess.
I get that there is not much attestation of invocation of Loki per se, I'm just making the point that invoking an agent of change makes sense sometimes, if the status quo is falling short. I might also point out that the attestations are by definition scarce, because Norse lore itself is quite scarce. There are gaping holes in the lore--for instance very few tales featuring goddesses, which might simply have been the way of Norse myth, or it may be that the bulk of the goddess-featuring stories was been pruned away by the Christian transcribers of Norse myth, or by the general, patriarchal process of christianization. How do we deal with these gaps? Are we stuck reciting a very pruned-down version of any certain mythical scripture forever--or do the gods inspire us to somehow fill in those gaps the way they were meant to be filled?

You do know that LOKE is also a verb in Norwegian? It is translated to "drifting around aimlessly" in my dictionary (and, I would add, in a messy way that could easily lead to unwanted incidents). And LÅKE is an adjective, translated to "bad, evil, sick, lousy".

When I first met my bf, he was a hardcore christian and then became atheistic, but a few years ago he started taking an interest in norse paganism and the first deity he felt connected to was Loki. In my research about Loki, it just makes so much sense 😂 Signs from Loki have popped up in his life since childhood. Between the outcasting, the anger of Loki and his children from the trauma they went through at the hands of the Aesir, humor and sarcasm, and connection to fire, it just makes sense with the things my bf went through and is still healing from. I firmly believe that Loki helped raise him, which is why he's so different from everyone around him and it's one of a million reasons why I love him so much. Loki is seen and believed to be a humorous trauma healer via unconventional methods and helping people live their most authentic lives to the point where their very existence is rebellion. 😈 I've seen how Loki has helped him face his fears and be more comfortable in himself while shedding the skin of what once was, learning to take life a little less seriously and rolling with the punches.
I really enjoy the content of these videos because they are well researched and sensible. None of this new age crap. The truth and deep meaning I realise, comes from the etymology which for those of us who don't speak Old Norse is enlightening. As I understand it, Loki appears for the first time in the medieval Icelandic sagas, but Loki's appearance is completely absent from the older texts such as the Viking runes, and therefore scholars don't agree on whether Loki was a real deity or a figment of the saga writers' imaginations.

If you look at it from a linguistic perspective, Loki being the deep power behind everything does make some sense. In ancient greek, λέγω does not only mean 'I speak' or 'I say' but has a noumerous amount of meanings all directed at thinking, meaning or reckoning in ones thoughts.
The Romans used the same word root in lex or legere, but with them, it hast lost that part of its meaning.
In German, we have the verb legen that is connected to that root and in English to lay.
But - and here is my conclusion: If you 'lay' rune sticks and try to read them, you are doing several things at once. You are litteraly 'laying' those sticks on the floor and arrange them, hence the modern meaning in German and English. But you are also trying to understand their meaning - German still has the verb auslegen, meaning to interpret - English uses to lay out in a similar way.

Catalyst is not the best word for this concept. Something like an ignitor would be better, because a catalyst does not initiate change. It reduces the amount of energy necessary for a change to take place. Something else has to be the initiating force when using a catalyst, because the catalyst does nothing without some start up energy. Then it becomes useful by reducing the amount of energy needed to effect some change, beneath the usual amount of energy it would take. Gasoline is a catalyst for starting fires, but it does not start fires itself. A spark does that. Loki is the spark; the ignitor.

You mentioned on why a spark would be scared of a life force. I thought that change is the only constant in life and without life there would be no change but then you reiterated that the spark doesn’t always mean change so that is definitely perplexing. If Loki is the Germanic Agni, then it makes sense that he drinks when Odin drinks, because all sacrifices go to the gods through Agni. Loki's fire can be mischievous, but he cooks the food, makes weapons (Mjolnir), etc. Logi eats the bones and plates also because he's the wildfire, rather than the controlled sacrifice/hearth/forge fire. He gets worse as the myths go on, because there are more and more Christians in Germanic lands as time goes on. There wasn't a clean one year transition of "we were all pagan last year but now none of us are so our stories about Loki being full on evil were when we were pagan too". Other fire/trickster or Odin type deities from other cultures also got more evil in their stories as time went on after those cultures came into contact with Christianity or Islam, ie Gwyn ap Nudd, etc. The Snaptun stone is a perfect example of apotropaic magic to invoke the controlled fire (Loki) to protect from the wildfire. As for the Lancashire rhythm, there's also a 7th century Alamanic fibula with an inscription to "Wodan, Wigiþonar and "Logaþore".
It almost sounds like Loki could be a metaphorical manifestation of impermanence itself. The raw nature of the universe.

The reason for worshipping Loki varies from person to person, some view him as the opposer(The Satan, the Opposing Angel, Opposing force etc.) to Odin, and/or Thor, given his place in the legends. There are those who worship him because, as you said, they feel like outcasts, some because they look specifically at Loki's shapechanging abilities in the story of The Builder, and look at him as a figure of fluidity of gender and form. Some just read Riordan's trilogy Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard, and apply that to their practice. As I said a lot of reasons, each as varied as those that worship him.

Three thoughts:
One; perhaps Loki is related to the Roman god Janus. Janus is said to be a god with two faces who represents beginnings and endings. Even other gods had to call upon his name to begin and end something. Sounds a lot like they needed that spark of change.
Second, it seems that Loki is worshipped largely by people who are outcasts from society, those that don’t belong. In other words those that want change. Anyone who is unhappy with the status quo probably wants change more than anything.
Finally, number three, Life Force. Thor (the life force) is the only god who scares Loki. “Life force” can be interpreted as a lot of things and likely means many of them. One interpretation is that it’s a mindset. A force of will. A will to live one might say. A force of will might indeed lock down change. It might not kill change but it can certainly slow it down or even hold it still for time. A force of will can also force change into action like when Thor makes Loki replace Sif’s hair. So Thor can actually threaten Loki and perhaps the other Gods rely on him too much. Odin as the frenzy seems to only matter in a state of change for why else would you need a frenzy? Freyr and Freya need change as fertility gods. However, if the life force is satisfied it doesn’t want change at all and if it is unsatisfied it can will change into being. Thus why I think the life force scares the spark and the other gods don’t.

Loki fears Thor because Loki is change Thor is the heart one with the life force. The changeless one, the I am, the true knowing of one's self. humans fear change if the don't know they self. Great video this got my life force flowing thank you for your work.
I think Loki and Thor are constantly in a balanced conflict. Loki represents death and change and Thor represents life force. Loki always wins in that we will all die but Thor in turn triumphs because we are again reborn.

I once read, somewhere, that obviously these all predate writing of any kind and as you have mentioned passed down from song and poetry. Same book I read talked about how Loki is not, in fact bound, ever. But he must wait to set his spark alight until the time is right amongst man. And that this in-between time is heartbreaking for all the gods. And many seek to intervene wherever they can and get away with it because they care to break the cycle more than man does because they know things man cannot. This theme may be older than we think because it is found in different ways and words the world over. Same book says Giants are Eaters of the Dead, eaters and destroyers of the spark that makes life.. preventing relife and or the expansion of life and thus are an eternal enemy to be conquered to break a cycle seen by some. The book also says, though this may go with and against many known or believed things- that Loki hides himself in many ways to fool the Giants because they are few but vigilant and determined and smarter than they should be and he has come about at times being known as "Lokka".... have zero idea if any of this aligns with what is or isn't known or surmised, just found it fascinating at the time I read it. Have read too many things over too many years to recall name or when, but will remember one of these days.

Zarko, I too read the Eddas where the brother Fafnir kills the father for the treasure, and brother Regin is the blacksmith who trains Siegfried and encourages him to kill Fafnir. But even knowledgeable people can make mistakes, I guess.

Loki makes the spark the fire burns the forest but life comes back. Maybe that’s why Loki fears Thor.
Also the earthquakes that Loki makes when he screams is similar to Typhon who rages in Tartarus after Zeus binds him under a volcano.

Etymology is interesting. I believe Finnish is one of the original languages in the world. Here the word "Lokikirja" means "log book", diary that is kept on ships. "Lukki" is the spider with long legs, harvestman / daddy long legs. "Laki" is the "law", or top of a mountain / high point of something.
Also the word "Loka" means sewer waste.
Thor is most likely Toth. "Totuus" = truth. Odin is something new. "Uutinen" = the son of news. "Posti" is post, something that comes from / after annotation.

I follow Loki and have before Disney, not the biggest fan of the hiddleston lovers. I read the Eddas and immediately felt a connection to his character, he feels like a trickster archetype which I consider myself, he is an outcast and is frequently punished and pushed out which resonated with my own story.
I believe he represents the chaos in order, the necessary change to prevent stagnation.
I believe he also represents ugly truths, speaking and showing things no one wants to say though they all know.
I believe he represents pushing through, breaking through; not fate itself but the inevitability of fate and its destructive end.
Obviously some of this can be intuited from the stories, but some is also UPG I don't deny this as we are missing alot of stories. I have a big thought on his integral role in the Eddas as well as Ragnarok, he is one of the most important characters in the story and holds deep connection to me.

Often when people describe a stressful or choatic situation they use fire or heat to express it. In order for us to get angry or furious or in a trance, things often (here it comes again) have to get heated.
Wen thrives on the chaos sewn by Loki. When the wildfire spreads around us, it is Wen who possesses us and gets us through and then out of the situation.
I think I'm now convinced Loki does indeed resemble fire. ;)

I think Loki is hearth fire, his father and mother is like man made fire since the stone age, a hearth fire catalyzes everything in a household, but it could never eat as much as a full blaze, only bound and controlled it's good, unchecked it's destructive, this is why Heimdallur only could have killed him, the home valley who brings back control to an unchecked fire
