Yggdrasil is an immense and central sacred tree in Norse cosmology. Around it exists all else, including the Nine Worlds.

Yggdrasil is attested in the Poetic Edda compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and in the Prose Edda compiled in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both sources, Yggdrasil is an immense ash tree that is central to the cosmos and considered very holy. The gods go to Yggdrasil daily to assemble at their traditional governing assemblies. The branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away into other locations; one to the well Urðarbrunnr in the heavens, one to the spring Hvergelmir, and another to the well Mímisbrunnr. Creatures live within Yggdrasil, including the dragon Níðhöggr, an unnamed eagle, and the stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór. In astronomy, axis mundi is the Latin term for the axis of Earth between the celestial poles. In a geocentric coordinate system, this is the axis of rotation of the celestial sphere. Consequently, in ancient Greco-Roman astronomy, the axis mundi is the axis of rotation of the planetary spheres within the classical geocentric model of the cosmos. In 20th-century comparative mythology, the term axis mundi - also called the cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar, center of the world, or world tree - has been greatly extended to refer to any mythological concept representing "the connection between Heaven and Earth" or the "higher and lower realms"

A lot of people seemed disappointed in your delving into the Hellenistic similarities to the Germanic traditions. I would disagree with those critics being that there is a wealth of information to be discovered by seeking out the nuances. Anyone seriously seeking as much objective truth about our ancestral spiritual practices should keep a patient and open mind.

The hanging from the tree reminds me of a scene in a 70s movie called “A man called horse”. The ritual I do believe is the historical ritual called The Sun Dance which Native Americans did. A wooden pole was placed and the participants who was seeking spiritual enlightenment would be pierced and tied to this pole where they basically hung for several days or so with no food or water.

    • @nnonotnow

The Sun Dance - Wiwáŋyaŋg Wačípi, was the most important ceremony practiced by the Lakota (Sioux) and nearly all Plains Indians. It was a time of renewal for the tribe, people and earth. The village was large, as many bands came together for this annual rite.
Today The Sun Dance is a ceremony observed by the Native Americans of modern-day Canada and the United States to awaken the earth, give thanks, offer up prayers, and sacrifice for the greater good. It was, and is, among the most important rituals of the Plains Indians

I once took some psilocybe with some friends and we sat around a fire can which was ornated with runes
The longer I looked at these runes the better I understood their magic.
Since then I have started using rune oracles to find spiritual guidance throughout my life
The beauty of shamanism or spirituality is the fact that you're never "done" learning. Life's a process and we're its students.

This reminds me of when I was walking through two different groves of the giant sequoias in California.
I’m pretty spiritual but I wouldn’t say I’m Christian, I do follow teachings of Jesus, but I’m not seeking or into any “magic”.
I remain open to many things since wisdom can be found in any belief, and it all ties together into a large tapestry of life, or a world tree.
As I was walking through the groves, I could feel the trees talking. Yeah I know how it sounds, but I was able to tune in and listen, asking permission first of course.
They had so much ancient knowing from those trees.
What was more interesting was how one grove was very gentle, stoic and welcoming, while another grove about 5 miles away was very critical, abrupt and indifferent.
Both groves allowed me some very old earthly wisdom.
I was amazed that I was able to understand them, and wondered how I can relay the wisdom without sounding like a crazy person.
So yes, Trees, particularly older ones, are very powerful and very chatty if you can hear them. ❤️

Hands down all your theories are correct in my opinion! I think you’re on the right track especially with the similarities between Yggdrasil and the chakra. We discussed this previously and I remember in a previous comment to your previous video on the topic I also mentioned a constellation that was linked to Yggdrasil and Ashvatta. I think that was also a very plausible theory. Anyhow, yes Gram Hancock's theories might face some backlash but I’m glad someone else finds it fascinating and linked to Ragnarock 🤝🤝🤝 keep up with the comparative mythology streak because it's an amazing source of education for the masses. Keep on spreading the word. Thank you 😊

I really appreciate your explanation, I once saw Yggdrasil, or the "World Tree" in a dream, at its roots were these sort of gnome spirits taking care of it as nutrients moved up from, and connected our world into the high realms, the branches of the tree were made of lifeforms from all over the galaxy and they were all glowing green, and where they ended was the greater cosmos. It had the intensity of a mushroom trip and I soon made a symbolic representation of it capturing its essence, and had it tattooed in the center of my chest

Very refreshing to hear about your research and knowledge about these subjects. I've been on a very connected spiritual path informed by nature since I was a child. When I first read about Yggdrasil it was exciting to me the deep connection between worlds that was revealed. It reminded me of the climbing tree in my parents yard that I spent a lot of time in when I was young. That tree was not a yew or ash but it was the tree that brought calm and a place to contemplate my connection to the planet and dreamworlds. I've been very drawn to archeological studies, fossils and geographical phenomena and love hearing about how our ancestors connected to the sacred life forces. For years I let that guide me. It is interesting know a little more about where my family is from and how we integrated those traditions into our American life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and bringing people in this world a bit closer together.

an interesting explanation i have seen for the wetting of the tree or daubing it with white loam is symbolic of the liquid of sacrifice being spread on an idol or holy pillar. erick dodge wrote a thesis connecting the waters of the river gjoll with the three wells and the perennial "water of life" symbolized in ritual by various substances that could used for libation, such as milk, blood, semen, honey, or alcohol. this connects with some of the libation practices in the indo-iranian world as well as historical descriptions of liquid offerings to the gods. in the same way that the norns keep the tree alive, man keeps the idol, the community, and the world alive by splattering libations on it. if ever the libation were to stop, the tree would begin to rot.
the dew of the tree reminds me of the alchemical flos coeli, the flux of the sky, which is the dew, and especially powerful after the spring equinox (could the four deer represent the two equinoxes and two solstices?), said to be liquified sunlight. if this same connection were present in the myth, it might connect the dew to the light of the celestial bodies, perhaps moonlight, the stars, or the sun, and thus connect honey and mead with these things. in the east as well, libations are often said to have celestial associations.

I've always believed Yggdrasil to be a fourth dimensional octahedron, with the plutonic solid at the center and each of the face being octahedron themselves representing the 9 realms.
As a tesseract is to a cube, Yggdrasil is to an octahedron.
Visually it would resemble branches on one side and roots on the opposite.
Further evidenced by Sleipnir (Odin's horse/yggr drasil) having eight legs, each leg representing a octahedron face of the solid's body.

Thank you for this video content.
Trees, Pillars, Wheels, Mounds, Mountains, Rivers, Wells, Springs, and Serpents are all very important cosmological symbolisms in all cultural Stories of Creation, and in what other languages but the human inspired from the Earth could our ancestors depict and describe everything they observed on and above the Earth days and nights in and out for generations?
If taking a direct modern cosmological approach to the ancient creation stories and its symbols, we have a terrestrial Pillar to point out the Earth´s celestial rotation axis and we have a nocturnal Wheel on the night sky to describe this rotation and location.
We also have a Wheel of star constellations to mark the Earth´s orbital annual motion around the Sun, which itself is a center point for life on Earth and for everything else in the Solar System.
I have this explanation to be depicted and explained by the Norse (and other) Ask Yggdrasil Tree.
All together this is logically depicted and described as The Tree of Life connecting to the Milky Way (The mythical Milky Way River) around which the Solar System orbits once every 220 mill. Years.
So, we also have a central marking for and connection to the Milky Way Center and its bulged central Mound of Creation, (Mound Meru in Hindu mythology, for instants) providing the knowledge of our origin and cycle of life in the Milky Way - and really beyond too.
    Regarding the mythical “Irminsûl”:
“The Old Saxon word compound Irminsûl means 'great pillar'. The first element, Irmin- ('great') is cognate with terms with some significance elsewhere in Germanic mythology. Among the North Germanic peoples, the Old Norse form of Irmin is Jörmunr, which just like Yggr is one of the names of Odin. Yggdrasil (Old Norse 'Yggr's horse') is a cosmic tree from which Odin sacrificed himself, and which connects the Nine worlds. 19th century scholar Jakob Grimm connects the name Irmin with Old Norse terms like iörmungrund ("great ground", i.e. the Earth) or iörmungandr ("great snake", i.e. the Midgard serpent”). (Me: This “great ground” isn´t the Earth).
The Great Snake or Midgaard Serpent is encircling Midgaard, the Earth and home for humans. Folkloristic this can be interpreted “horizontally” as a fairy tale, but it is in fact a vertical scenario as this Serpent symbolizes the Milky Way. As does Odins Wisdom, “Yggs Horse”, and Odins Horse, Sleipnir.
I have especially this “Irminsûl Pillar” to represent the Milky Way as the “Tree of Knowledge” since it specifically refer to Odin and his cosmological wisdom et large.
When Odin is hanging “9 days and nights in this tree”, it is a misinterpretation IMO. It really should be “9 months in the darker seasons”, as the Milky Way scenario is invisible in the rest 3 lighter months of the year.
In Scandinavian Rock Art, one can see a minor and major tree carved side by side and I have the minor one to describe and represent the Solar System and Yggdrasil, and the major one to describe and represent Irminsûl and the Milky Way.
    - But that´s just my opinion from studying Comparative Mythology and the modern cosmological story too.
    Thanks again and Best Wishes.

Looking at the The Great Pillar, I'm reminded of a tau cross, which is indicative, (to me,) of the Age of Taurus. Also, looking at Mjolnir (or any hammer, really) I've got the same tug of thought. When it is worn as an accessory, it gives me the impression of "As above, so below," as it kind of mirrors a tau cross. I'm pretty fresh to this material, (specifically Norse mythos,) but I have a bit of familiarity with astro-theology, and it feels related. Just something that stood out to me. Was just wondering if any others have given thought to this.

I'm sure that a lot of Odin related stuff is about a science of inner evolution as is the Buddhist or Yogic paths(path could be horse in the Yggdrasil translation).
Yggdrasil can be seen as your personality whits can become a more true individual as your evolution progresses in(a personal) Ragnarok, the elves as ancestors, Hell as narcissistic traits, most gods damned and so forth(goddamned😉).

Astrologers equate Yggdrasil with the North and South Node. Midpoints between the moons actual position and center points of a perfect circular orbit. These two lunar points become symbolically a snake or dragon running through the center of the earth.

Bock Saga is a story that was created by one eccentric man. He places him and his family at the center everything and mixes in some finnish mythology. I would not call Bock Saga "finnish folklore" as it's not from finnish tradition but just from the mind of one finnish man.

So, a man born in Finland, to finno swedish parents, who has Finnish roots going back at least hundreds and hundreds of years, is not Finnish just because he's a Swedish speaking finn? 😂
You do know that tons of Swedish speaking finns have majority Finnish dna, right?
My own finno-swedish grandfather from Ostrobothnia, partly of roots from the same areas Bock's ancestors were from, had like 70% Finnish dna.
Ethnic finns and non-finns have mixed through history. And people have changed languages. All finno-swedes have Finnish dna.
But I guess you're only a fan of "pure bloods".
Ior Bock was a Swedish speaking finn. Deal with it or keep crying, racist 😂

This was good.. I gotta tell u, i had a magic mushroom once. (And once was ALL it took for me to never do that agn) But, in my trip, everything in my room turned into eyes ofcourse, and then i fell through a blue- glowing 6 sided gateway.. When i got to the other side, i was floating in space facing a GIANT tree (like the 1 in that Avatar film) Every time i breathed in, the tree would glow brighter.. It went on until we synchronized.. Next thing i knew, i was hanging from the tree like a fruit, it still glowed, brighter with every breath i took... I was 1 with this tree... It went on for i dunno how long, i was completely absorbed in this vision.. Then suddenly, i detached like a heavy ripe old apple . I wasn't quite on the ground. Kind of floating near the tree. When to my shock i began to hear what i can only describe as Vadic chanting from India.. Like how the sing the Puranas in a large group.. I looked, and saw a ghostly reddish geometric shape gliding around from behind the tree with THAT mantra sound coming from it... Then the ship thing stopped and turned twards me.. Came at me real slow like it was lining up to hit or eat me.. The tree and i were now OUT of sync at this point. And, i thought i might die. Then, i was inside this red crystal ship, and it was taking me around the tree with it. Chanting continues un interrupted...... I was in a meditative state, sitting in a crystal ship, flying around a giant glowing tree with Mantra chanting in full stereo.... I dont know what happened after that.. Since then though, i get things most people dont. Symbols, hidden meanings, that kind of thing... Had to share that..

Yaaaaaaaaaaaa, woo hoo. Thanks Micheal!!!! Frey, freyja, tyre, Eire, baldor. Please also talk about how and if plant and trees as well as animals have spirits and since are alive are possibly all going to the gods as well as the gods to them, since we basically worship nature and the earth that produces life. Unless I have this terribly wrong. Thank you bröder!!!! And unless someone can enlighten me on a better salutation to use, since I don’t know very much even though I’ve been Norse/Germanic pagan for two years, I will end with Skál to everyone, to your good health!!!!

Various interpretations can be right, it's like the blind men feeling the elephant, there is a Truth and absolute reality, God, but it's not directly obtainable by the senses, you see His reflections in everything and that's how you learn.

Maybe cutting the head off a giant and preserving it in order to consult the spirit of the giant, means cutting the fruiting body of a mushroom - mushrooms really being giants living in the underworld, their great mycelial networks forming something of an underground neural network. I have had this thought about giants being mushrooms and a great way to preserve it in the old days would be in honey. And honey becomes mead, and maybe magical mushroom infused mead is the real 'mead of poetry'.
