  • Here is a Simple and effective way to stop that loud noise you're probably hearing coming from your exhaust vent by the oven.

    Every house with a stove or even microwave oven usually has an exhaust vent that leads to the outside and at the end of this vent is usually where we find our problem.
    With a simple application of this thicker and stronger weather stripping in just the right places we can eliminate or at least drastically reduce that noise. Below are some of the items I used to fix this problem... FYI I used the 3/4" wide and 3/16" thick foam weather tape. This provided the best results from my experience.
    Foam Tape | Frost King V449BH Vinyl Foam Tape, 3/4" x 3/16"-

    Alcohol Wipes | Individually Wrapped Alcohol Prep Pads w/ 70% Isopropyl Alcohol-

    This video was really helpful and such a simple idea. Question: what did you put on the outside in the two corners along top edge? In the video you said you would be putting more foam tape but when you showed finished project it looked like some kind of making tape?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  Рік тому +4

      I just used more of the same foam tape. I placed a few small pieces on the outside over the hinge to damper the movement and help with the rattling between the two pieces of metal touching. The hinge seems to be half the problem with the noise. It metal on metal with a lot of movement. So by placing a few pieces of the foam there it gives it some resistance and keeps it in a constant contact state for the most part.

    Your video was very helpful. I look forward to trying this on our new exhaust vent. Could you recommend where I can get a critter grill for a new 8" stove exhaust. It's just wide open at this point and flaps all day with the wind. It is brand new but was obviously just cheap and available. Thank you!

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  7 місяців тому

      Aww man that’s no good if they didn’t have some type of grill in that. 8” is a good sized vent opening. They do sell some small mesh panels at Home Depot and Lowe’s that you could cut slightly bigger than the 8” opening, cut slits or tabs around the outer perimeter And bend them enough to wedge and slide into the opening down into the tube.
      Those meshes are usually found in the air ducting or roofing areas or the metal mesh will be in another area where they sell pieces of angle iron and metal mats and tubing. not listed as air duct mesh obviously but can be repurposed for it.

    The funny thing I’ve noticed is that in roof vents with dampers they aren’t as loud as wall vents when the wind is blowing. However a lot of bathroom fans have a damper inside at the fan that can be quite noisy especially if the wind is strong. Some people are more annoyed with the sound of flaps closing in vents but I don’t mind it. But good to know these tips for anyone who might be annoyed with their noisy vent flap endeavors.

    The racket we have is coming from the butterfly damper just above the range hood. The wind blows across the roof vent, and creates a vacuum, which flaps the damper. It's in a round pipe, within a square stack, and I can't get at it.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  5 місяців тому +1

      I get what you’re saying. That is a hard location to get to without being pretty invasive. Is there anything you can do to the vent extinguisher on the roof that can slow down or dampen the air flow? Maybe adjusting the type of cover over the vent or angle of the cover? I know some vents have a makeshift hood/roof rap over the opening and it almost catches the wind. Maybe there’s something there you can add or adjust to stop the vacuum effect it’s having

      The flat should still close and sit on the foam you install. You wouldn’t want to put too thick of foam to cause the flap to stand off. But also as far as critters, there’s usually a screen either at the entry point or somewhere down the line to prevent this.

    Any ideas how to fix this outside my condo on the 12th floor?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  5 місяців тому +1

      You’ll need to look around the building, possibly around the outside wall, look in the area near you laundry or stove cuz they could have made a short run up an exterior wall to vent it. If your the top floor it could be vented on the roof.
      But a lot of condo/apartment buildings vent all around the exterior wall. You’ll see an angled hood vent. If it is up on the 12th floor you may not be able to mess with the exterior vent. But may be so to bring up to the building maintenance. Point it out to them and help them diagnose and suggest the solutions. They may try and fix it.

    The microwave clanging problem is in a condo where I have no access to the outside of the vent. I don't use the fan but was told to reverse the fan itself directly to vent inside rather than out. What do you think?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  Рік тому

      I would not recommend that. That could be a safety hazard for sure if you ever need to vent out the space and have an exit point for smoke or fumes. Not that it will happen, but just in case it ever does, that would not be a good thing to have that fan keeping all the air in.
      If you don’t have access to where the fan exits your building, and you cannot see it anywhere on the outside of your building, or might have to get to it with a ladder, I would try reaching out to the maintenance or whoever your management system is and see if they can get to the Exit point of your vent and do the same process of dampening the flap because it’s making excessive noise. It should be somewhere on that building where it exits and there’s a flap that controls the airflow. So it’s just a matter of getting to it yourself or whoever has permission to.

      You should be able to do the same thing, but I think this would obviously involve a ladder now. As long as you can get to wear that vent is whether it is on the wall or sometimes on a roof vent. You can apply the same technique of dampening the metal on metal contact to reduce the noise greatly.

  • @msromike123
    @msromike123 6 місяців тому +2

    No metal contact, and it doesn';t seall any more, so dust and cold air will come in

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  6 місяців тому +1

      You want to make sure is still sits down flat, so not using too big of a gasket will help. Or adjusting the door/hinge if you can to allow it to sit flat. The main goal is to just not have the metal on metal contact. Some nicer designed flaps have a little more weight to them and they sit with some slight pressure to help create the seal when the vent fan isn’t in use.

      There is sometimes a flap just inside of the exhaust vent above your stove, usually a one way type of opening to allow air out but not back in. That sometimes can be flapping around. Depending on how far you pipe goes from inside to outside there may be another flap that you need to dampen

    • @charlesrodriguez7984
      @charlesrodriguez7984 7 днів тому

      Like bathroom fans, there’s usually two dampers in a hood vent system because the roof and wall cap flaps aren’t perfect seals and often and very easily lift up in strong winds. You may want to dampen that as well.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  Рік тому

      @@MaryOKC okay yeah. Usually there’s something, if it’s a upgraded type of product, that gives it some down pressure to keep closed when not in use. Most are just a flap on a hinge. That’s why the wind grabs it so easily. But in our case I put some foam tape on the outside over the hinge area in a few spots to give it some resistance and give that down pressure to stay closed. You might try that and see if it helps push on it to stay closed but not too much to not let it open when you run your exhaust fan.
