Based on This Old House's video. The range hood came with flexible piping but my local city's code calls for straight and smooth ducting to prevent grease build up.

Excellent! Getting ready to do mine this weekend. Loved seeing the tube roll off the roof and bending the nail! That’s the real stuff right there! And we’ve all been there.
Looks good, but the vent flashing should have went under the second row of shingles as well. Better to have more covered and less exposed.
I am loving this video. The fact that there no dialog but rather just showing how it's done... But when that tube of sealant feel out and rolled off was the point I decided to subscribe. That was hilarious!
THANK YOU! Just did mine for a microwave exhaust. Watched your video a few times and did it in about 30 minutes. I was lucky mine was close enough to the edge of the roof that I was able to do it standing on my ladder. For anyone reading this and thinking about tackling this project, I used all rigid 6" ductwork. No flexible stuff. It's not only highly recommended to only use rigid, but also code in most states. Do it during warm weather. If it's cold out, you're gonna have a hard time with the shingles. Also, when choosing between 6" and 4" ductwork, check your fan exhaust capacity. So best to just go 6" and not worry about if it'll be enough?
@@Victor-hc8xx If you're going through the trouble of ducting it 6" should be the minimum. 6" is good for 600 cfm and lots of range hoods these days do more than that.
Just finished my hood range install and this video encouraged me to diy saved bunch of money and it was simple’ no talking just showing i like that not like other vid they get you bired before explaining how to ! Very nice!!!!!

Roofers use a large piece of foam to kneel on and to keep tools/materials from sliding down the roof. Usually it’s old couch cushion foam, try it out
Literally just watched this again and I finally installed mine on my roof for my hood range. It went great and just waiting for a rain to check for leaks, lol. Thx a bunch!!

You forgot to nail the pipe onto the roof, it supposed to stick out and then make two cuts on it and nail to the roof then put the vent cover over it

I like the video and work you did. Im buying an over range microwave and want vented out like that too. So many steps and alot of work! Im first getting an electrician to hook up a seperate outlet in cabinet and its own breaker for the fan. Do I then hire an HVAC or Roofer or both to do rest?

What part do you need if your roof jack doesn't have a collar? You just have a 6" coming out of the roof for example.
Could you use the same vent cap on a tiled roof? My roof is sloped but it’s flat tiles instead of shingles

Used a roofing harness! Wonderful!! First time I have seen it in hundreds of roof videos. Most common roof fall is forgetting where the edge is and simply walking off the roof. $100 harness kit saves $KK of med bills and pain. Seen it. Ugly.

I like the use of the safety harness also but that rope looks awfully long.
@@mikeslater6246, the rope is long so you can walk across the entire roof without the need for additional anchor straps at the ridge. It doesn't mean that's how far you would fall if you did fall. I don't know what the proper word is but the line has a brake device on it that you can adjust to limit how far you would fall.
Did you leave the red anchor installed on your roof for future use?
What's your range hood CFM? Mines 700 and I'm seeing 7" minimum diameter duct

sorry did not show much footage of that but in the beginning of the video you see some of it. It's all straight 6in pipe from the ceiling drywall then have a slight elbow (theyre adjustable) then another straight section going directly to the vent. Just used flashing/roofing tape to attach everything together.
A friend of ours fell off the roof and died. A harness would have changed history. We used to run hexagonal head sheet metal screws into the lugs on our boots. I know, hard on shingles, but be careful on them, and save your life and/or wellbeing.

I missed the part where the roof vent attaches to the ductwork. Do you go down to the attic or kitchen and feed it up to the vent? Did you even connect it?

Oh my just so you know the sealant you used it will give up in couple of months and then you will get water in the house just because you cut 2 rows and you stuck the vent under just one row. Both rows should've go over the vent for better weather proofing and Always when you install a vent take your time pull out the shingles and use ice and water to seal around not caulking because its kinda useless. Appreciate your time posting this but i fix them everyday!

@@johnhammond2155 yes search on google for ice and water shield. Get an idea how to cover a vent with this ice and water shield and instead of using the caulking sealant which is a mess its easier to use the ice and water, plus it will last as long as the roof life. Caulking tends to give up especially getting hit by the sun everyday it will sooner or later give up and wake up with water in your house. So always take couple shingles or rows out to expose the area you have to work on. Lets say for the vent you have you need to take out at least 3 rows. Then cut your vent hole and remember your bottom shingle has to be covered a bit by the bottom of your vent that you are installing. So once the vent hole is cut and vent placed on his spot you nail the 4 corners and after you come and cover it around with ice and water shield. Obviously you have to trim it around. Then once this step is done you have to place the 3 rows you took off back on and again trim them around. And now you dont have any nails exposed and no caulking needed and you can sleep good at night by knowing you dont have to worry until the next roof change. I hope you understand my story if not i will post a video and probably tag you somehow if not keep an eye on my chanel i will post a video how its done.

Hi! When didn’t you put any waterproofing sealer on the bottom of the cap? I saw you on my did the L,R and top.
I didn't put sealant on the bottom to prevent trapping excess moisture/water that might come from the duct. It's explained better in the "How to Vent a Bath Fan Through the Roof" by This Old House's video

Where did you get the vent? Does it have a backflow valve in it?
Yes overall it has 2 backflow flaps, one from the actual unit and one from the roof vent. I got the vent and ducts from home depot. They are 6 inches

Should have used a couple of pitch hoppers, One for you to rest on and work and the other to hold your tools. Look into them.
How did you know where to drill the pilot hole (from inside the attic) so that the vent's top edge would line up perfectly with the upper course of shingles?
Was just a coincident. It shouldn't matter much as long as you have at least two layers of shingles on top of the vent

If you need to be precise, you can use a plumb bob.
For me I had the new range hood in place. Had to stand on either side of range hood and attach a felt to the end of a stick for center. Then crawl in attic drill felt mark.
So everyone is aware, what this guy did is not totally correct. I'm not putting him down or criticizing just pointing a few critical flaws. The pipe should be fastened inside the attic due to potential fire. When the vent needs to be cleaned the pipe could come loose letting the smoke vent inside the attic. The pipe should be directly connected to the vent then all seams should have foil tape around them. The pipe should have gone directly through the roof about an inch, 2 tab cuts made on opposite sides of the pipe then nail down the tabs to ensure the pipe is stable at the top or wrap a band around the pipe and nail the ban down, then crimp the pipe or the vent wont fit over the band. The vent should have ice shield underneath the vent 6"-1foot all the way around. If the pipe is secured to the vent caulk underneath the vent is unnecessary because he stuck the vent to paper. You should use roofing tar at room temperature, if the tar is too hot a big mess will be made. The tar goes on top of the vent but under the shingles. If you put a nail through metal 100% guaranteed that nail will leak. By using the roofing tar you create a very good seal with the nail and the metal and at the same time the shingles will have a very good seal to each other and the vent. Any nails that will be exposed should have a rubber washer then caulked over with culk that suits your area.

A good rule of thumb on roofs (or attempting to shed water anywhere outdoors) --- NEVER use caulks or sealants --- Shed water mechanically with flashings !!!

Was it really necessary to use the rope on that roof? You were not even working close to the edge, and it looks like only two stories
I didn't want to take the risk. $100 reusable harness was worth the peace of mind. Also I got used to fall protection from work where anywhere 6ft and above we were required to use fall protection. One slip could lead to a major injury or death, near the edge or not. It's not necessary but I chose to use it and it's also up to you.
@@danielangeles86 OK fair. I did not know you were trained for that. Most people with no training would possibly put themselves in trouble. Let me explain: I have mountaineering and antenna tower climbing experience going back several decades. What I have observed is that people with no training 1) use harnesses as an excuse to be less vigilant to the point of putting themselves more in danger than necessary 2) they in fact stumble over the ropes and fall often, sometimes due to fatigue due to having to constantly relocating it. This roof looks easy enough that either one is unlikely.
Just one more question, won't the screws used to fix the attachment create water entry points on a roof like this?
@@AlessioSangalli Perfectly understood. The screws were placed below shingles where the truss is so I removed existing before attaching the brackets then you nail them back on. Of course there's a chance of leaking but it depends on how careful you take off the shingles.

That was the worst roof vent job I've ever seen., but I'm glad it popped up because I now use it to train guys what not to do.

you're dumping the greasy exhaust right onto the roof.
Never use Flex Duct !! Venting is reduced by over 50% just by using Flex Duct. Use rigid vent
