Good idea. My 24 year old fan needed a cleaning and replace the motor & fan blades. Because, after 22 years, I'm tired of listening to this thing tap, tap tap all night long, I removed the flapper and added two 3/8" foam pads to the ends of the flapper (similar to what you did). I had a difficult time re-installing the flapper and eventually disconnected the plastic flapper housing from the metal housing. Then I had to get in the attic and re-attach it. At 5:12 in the video you can see the small black plastic tab on the right side of the opening where the flapper housing snaps into the metal housing. There's another on the left side. If you man-handle it too much it will disconnect itself and the you'll have to make a trip to the attic. To avoid my mistake, I suggest attaching adhesive backed foam to the bottom of the plastic housing rather than the flapper. That way you don't have to remove the flapper. You're less likely to get in a fight with it the way I did. Thanks for the idea and the video.
Ya I might go this route as its a bit safer, one less thing to break.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I've had this issue for 6+ years on a new build. The installer said my Broan model has a flapper defect and this is a very common issue.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! This sound drove me nuts for almost a year, but your video helped me fix it in less than an hour.
This solved a three year mystery noise in my house. Thank you!!
I freaking love you bro. Literally fixed this tonight after 3 years of dealing with this stupid clacking.
Glad I was able to help :) Drove me nuts too!
Omg three years?? You have the patience of a god. I couldn’t take it for a week
Spot on! Exactly the issue. Tapping sound is so anannoying!! Thanks!
THIS HELPED!!!! Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for posting this video now I know exactly what’s going on with mine. I just got to get my husband up there to fix it.😊
Thank you this helped me do a similar job ❤
Hey thank you for posting! This helps a lot!
I am going to try this tomorrow to silence the ghost in my kid's bathroom!!!!!! Hopefully this resolves their fears of using the bathroom especially at night ❤ it legit sounds like knocking.
Big thumbs up! I got the same one, thank you!
Moved into my house 2 years ago and have been dealing with this since then but took care of it today after finding this video! Such a simple fix too
Good video and I hope it elimin ates the noise for my vents.
I think I might turn the power back on for a minute to test the fan and make sure it still works before reinstalling the light. Nice video.
You can.... it's such a slight modification.... you can test the flapper by flicking it with your hand once it's re-installed. It should move VERY easily and lightly...... no effort at all.
thanks
Welcome! Did it help? I no longer hear the clacking noise after this fix :)
weather stripping..great idea! Would like to know though why it just started clicking after years of being quiet. Any ideas??
Thank you. Does the flapper seal well and keep the cold air from coming in? - My issue is the cold air. Cheers.
Doesn’t this leave the door open all the time vs just when the wind blows? I love in the south. Wondering if you’ve had any issues with humidity since this fix.
You may have just saved my sanity...
Worth a shot at least! It was driving me nuts every time the wind blew outside..... I don't notice it anymore after doing this :)
@@ShowPhil Sanity restored! 👍
I have two identical Broan-Nutone fans in my two bathrooms. In one install, the flapper is horizontal (like in your video), and in the other it is vertical. The vertical one flaps open and closed when I turn on the fan, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the fan. The horizontal flapper doesn't have this symptom. Can one rotate the flapper so that it is horizontal?
thanks my fan is making the same noise. I have a project now.
Did it help? I no longer notice the clacking noise after this fix :)
@@ShowPhil isn’t there a flapper on the outside of the house too? That also could have been the source of the noise.
@@charlesrodriguez7984 Not on my house.....
omg!! This is the exact problem i have in my apartment!! I just texted the landlord about it! why dont they MAKE the flapper with the foam on it? so weird!
I would have put the sticky side (Where you peeled off the white tape)
towards the Superglue edge
The white tape I peeled off wasn't the sticky side..... it was the soft cushion side...... I had already peeled off the other sticky side, which is the side I stuck to the super glue.
I also put wd40 on the hinges so it doesn’t get caught open. Mine had a wasp nest jamming it lmao.
Clack clack clack clack
Since 2005 exhaust fans have Alerted us of high winds. Such a clicky Clacky song they sing🤣
hope broan figures this one out
How did you get the flapper out?
Just pops out…
I pulled mine off when inspecting it and broke it..problem solved lol
That works too :)
I’d like to know if you had a problem with it later?
What does the flap do?
Broan = epic fail. This is an easy mod at the factory vs. forcing consumers to take the fan apart for the mod.
I fully agree... I have another Broan fan in my bathroom thatvis"quieter" both in sones and I don't hear it flapping... I wonder if they tweaked that more expensive fan to prevent the issue.
Mine is a different brand and it’s an epic fail as well. ☹️
@@chrism9294 What brand? Let's shame them too.
@@chrism9294 if you fixed the issue in the fan it could be the outside flap too. My dryer vent also makes the same noise. It’s hard to tell which one it is by sound alone because they sound similar.
Why are you playing music and allowing a drum beat to interfere with the presentation?
Sorry.... I don't think I had my headphones on when editing this video.
