As a human to fellow human. I admire that you are not scared of things and you gave it your best shot. You made sure it was water proofed, you cut the flashing into the roof. And gosh darn, Kudos for having a video people actually watched….
As a professional Sheetmetal worker, this was rough in the sense that thousands of people saw this video as a “How to install range” … ideally you would want rigid pipe. If you notice that you have an obstruction you can take (2) Adjustable 90°s and make an offset by setting them to 45°, that gives you distance from the 2x4… OR consult a professional before making a video or hire a guy (you can find professionals inside most HVAC companies. I genuinely mean this most people don’t know where to go for “Ventilation” issues) That would increase the quality of information that you put out.
I read some comments and people were rude. I hope I wasn’t, you seem like a nice guy and people like you, I thought so enough to write this comment… best of LUCK.

Hello, as you a professional, I hope you don’t mind me asking how you feel about elbows, as my new range hood advises against it. Hence why I came to learn how to install a new roof vent. We have moved our stove to a new location in the kitchen by about 7 ft. My husband would like to just use coiled ducting and I think we should go with metal ducting using elbows, but after reading our vent hood manual further, I’m now thinking we need go strait up, single story. With my configuration using the old vent would require - 2 elbows. Vent Model: IKTCH KB01 - 30”. Appreciate you taking the time as well as your very thoughtful & helpful comment to the creator.

@@KristiSage so the rule of thumb with hoods are in a “if you can avoid”.
      So …
      (1) ideal world: 6-7” metal duct straight up to roof flashing not exceeding the height of your hood.
      (2) will work great:6-7” metal duct offset using ‘less than’ 90° elbows to avoid grease settlement in ductwork, by letting duct flow downhill towards kitchen exhaust.
      (3) still works a 10x3 square to round with 6-7” 90° elbow directly through exterior wall, maybe through soffit (pitched towards exhaust) to wall eyebrow with backdraft damper (10x3 duct can be used aswell if you don’t have the ceiling, wall eyebrow must match duct.)
      (4) if you have too you have too: 6-7” Rigid Aluminum flexible duct to a metal sleeved collar at your exhaust and roof or wall flashings. Staying to “downhill” rule and avoiding 90°. (Never use FOIL duct, it’s larger more flexible coils allow grease settling and its weaker body will easily be torn by rodents in attic spaces. It’s a nightmare for people later down the road, ironically most hoods have this in the box don’t use it)

Flex duct does not meet code because it has the ability to store grease inside the edges creating a fire hazard. Rigid pipe is to be used to eliminate the possibility of fire penetrating the duct wall.

Thanks for sharing. One thing comes to mind after watching the video. If you used flex duct like you did, you could have used the already cut out area on your right that was patched up. That way, you do not have to squeeze it by the joist. Some areas require galvanized or solid metal ducts which make it hard to do but still doable with lots of work. Thanks again. I am not a venting expert, just a plumber with some venting experience. When I bought my 20-year old house, the range hood was not connected to any venting whatsoever, a code violation in BC. The top of the cupboards was lined with uncleanable grease which I paved over with plywood.
I ended up venting it with ABS pipe directly through the roof. I terminated it with a hardware store low-profile aluminum vent that covers it to keep the rain and snow meltwater out of the kitchen.
The key here, for the uninitiated, is to get advice on how to integrate and overlay your current roofing material with the vent cover. Caulking alone will not suffice, but you will need tar-style caulking additionally. Ask a roofer friend to demo the method for you.
Otherwise, its a doable DIY project. A last thought is safety. I had a friend both hold the ladder and be ready with a cellphone should I fall off ! A fall might incapacitate your ability to phone for help.

Flex duct has ribs in it for greasse to collect ( equals a fire hazard) , by not having a correct seal at the rigid duct will allow grease vapors and condensation to collect in your ceiling. That alone creats a health hazard for mold to grow & fire hazard for greaase landing on the insulation and wood products.
