Start Your Car With a Rope (Dead Battery Life Hack)

  • In this video, I demonstrate a way to start your car (when the battery is dead) without pushing it or using jumper cables.
    That's why you should always keep a rope in the car.
    This will work the best on petrol cars. I did try it on diesel, but it did not work.
    Your car needs to have a manual transmission.
    My brother told me that he saw my dad doing it, so I decided to try it out.
    You are suppose to jack up the front wheel (on a front wheel drive car) and put the car in the 3rd gear.
    Wrap the rope around the wheel and pull it.
    If you're lucky (and strong), the car will start.
    ------------------
    ☠Warning:☠
    As mentioned in the video, It will NOT work on any car.
    Trying to start the car this way can be Dangerous.
    Use this video content at your own risk

      And without Anti-slip regulation, otherwise it can start to brake the wheel in air and the car can fall down from the jack.

      James Gu jeep had an lsd from 99 to 2004 that was an open did with an oil pump. when a wheel would spin the pump would lock the diff.
      chevy also has their g80 locker that is open until a wheel spins faster then it mechanically locks.
      there are also viscous differentials that jeep and Subaru have used which are extremely slow in transferring torque.

    Cool video, but you'd better hope you don't have traction control... If you have traction control, the car will pulse the brake on the wheel that's "spinning" (in this case the wheel jacked up) and when it hits the brake on the spinning wheel, it'll force the non-spinning wheel (the one on the ground) to spin, which will likely make the car jerk forward, fall off the jack and drive down the street. Still cool though if you know what you're doing

    Winding the rope around your palm/wrist is extremely dangerous. The rope can wind back onto the tyre in the other direction, pulling you towards it, winding your hand or even your entire body on it. You have to hold the rope in such a way that you can easily let go in case it winds back.

    Lets not forget in your case it also needs to be front wheel drive. Also what happens if you have a wheel power transfer system that when one wheel free spins it transfers power to the other on the ground and well the car comes off the jack and runs you over?

    • @bojank.9384
      @bojank.9384 8 років тому +4

    • @MuhammadFarzanHussain
      @MuhammadFarzanHussain 8 років тому +13

      That won't happen as the e-brake is already applied. And as a precautionary step, I will suggest to put heavy/large rock on the both ends of each tyre that are on the ground to stop them from moving.
      The reason why the car won't run you over?
      Firstly, I believe the engine would simply stall if you try to start driving it on a 3rd gear. And that too, without any acceleration.
      Secondly, even if the powers got transferred to other wheels then the engine would stall within a matter of seconds because of these 2 factors:
      1. Rocks placed on the front and back of all three tyres that are on the ground,
      2. E-brake is applied.
      So, it will not run you over.
      I hope this helps. :)

    • @bojank.9384
      @bojank.9384 8 років тому +1

      +Mohammad Farzan Hussain Yes, this helps, however i would still be kinda afraid cause its hard to know which wheels are pulling the cars, because if back wheels are pulling, by simple logic i think spinning front wheel won t have any effect, dont u think?

    • @MuhammadFarzanHussain
      @MuhammadFarzanHussain 8 років тому +1

      Precisely. Depends on the drivetrain. If you have a rear wheel drive car then you need to do this on the rear tyre.
      This is kinda risky but helpful in many cases, like when there's no one around to help you push-start the car.
      I believe it is always better to be knowledgeable about the possibilities. :)

    • @rodrigonh
      @rodrigonh 8 років тому +3

      Hey dofishbuster. It will never happen (at least not in condition show in the video). All normal city (passenger) cars are differential driven: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_(mechanical_device) One wheel is strongly "fixed" at ground the other is totally free on the air, all the work will be transferred to the free wheel. As analogy, think of a 10ohm resistor wired in parallel with a 100000000ohm resistor, electrons will just prefer the 10ohm path :)

    Aaaand, pertinent details omitted... The key must be turned to the FULL on position, also the vehicle must be in gear, 1st gear would be best. If you lack the strength 2nd gear may also work. It would not be helpful to try this with the key in the off position, or if the vehicle is not in 1st or 2nd gear. Also, take the vehicle out of gear before lowering the jack. If you think that this is all common sense, remember there have been people whom have set their new RV on cruise control and proceeded to head to the back to make a sandwich.

      @Navneet Gautam BBA Regular It won't spin freely, it will require effort to rotate the tire by pulling the rope because the engine will be engaged and causing resistance. It may, in fact, require much effort. As the wheel begins to rotate you will also hear the engine begin to slowly turn over. The resistance is being caused by the compression of the pistons moving up and down inside the cylinders compressing the fuel as each piston reaches its top position. When the piston is almost at the top "fuel is compressed within the cylinder" the spark occurs causing the fuel to be ignited. If done with enough force "quickly enough" the engine will start. It may take a few repeat attempts before it fully starts and begins a stable idle.

    Another twist is starting with the rope on a pulley on the engine. Can be done on older tractors with big pulley for flat belts. Get a rope around that, be in neutral, and pull away. The pulley is connected to the engine. The gearbox being in neutral will not turn the wheels.
    Same thing can be done on PTO - but you need an attachment on that PTO to provide you a large diameter pulley to wrap the rope around, and even so the PTO have massive gearing needing a really big lever to turn the engine from the PTO (but theoretically is possible to start from PTO)

    Wont work, the compression of a engine is too great. If you actually push start a car you use the momentum before you drop the clutch to engage the engine and let the compression fire. Often even going 20mph the cdar will still stall out to a stop.
    Further you can park a car in on a hill using only its first gear to hold it. A higher gear will allow the car to move all be it slowly, you yourself are not going to derive that much energy to move it.
    Please do not try it, I am turning this guy in for promoting a very dangerous ignorant IDea.

    I would highly advise no one actually try this. A lot of front wheel drive cars transfer power back and forth between both front wheels (typically only one wheel has power at any given moment not both) and there is a chance that something can go wrong and the car could take off if the wrong wheel were to suddenly get power.

    • @craigsundberg1443
      @craigsundberg1443 8 років тому +1

      No, provided it worked, which it would not the limited slip works in a manner to ALWAYS provide power to the tire with the least amount of traction.
      If you jack up a car and put it into gear while running while leaving one tire down, the other tire will simply spin.
      This from someone who has done a great deal of wrenching.

      Craig Sundberg then you either didn't have a limited slip or it wasn't functional.
      a limited slip puts a percentage of the traction from the spinning wheel to the stationary side. if a limited slip was tight and operation correctly, it would still power the stationary wheel, or burn up the clutch in the limited slip.

    Kudos for thinking outside the box, however cars that are AWD or have a proper LSD diff in them will not work and if it does the car would probably drive off. (particularly if its a diesel which has enough torque most of the time to do so.) a petrol will just stall when it hits the ground most of the time, however there are some that have enough torque to body weight where they will recover and just keep going particular if its in first gear (my 1.5 liter Dihatsu charade for example will recover because it has a bigger engine than most in it.) Also what wasn't mentioned was if it is rear or front wheel drive. so many things could go wrong with this that it would just be safer to get some stranger to hep push.

Also you had the car in neutral, which means turning the wheel would do nothing to the engine. When someone "pops" the clutch to start a car, the car is moving and you need to "pop" the clutch. For what you did, you would still need to pop the clutch.

      The car was in the 3rd gear not neutral.
      I even show it in the video - top right corner:

      OK, can't really tell from the camera view. I'm guessing the clutch safety switch disables the starter, but you didn't use the starter so pressing down on the clutch is not needed.

    And i have a solution for those with rear differential wheel drive it' VERY easy!! All you need is a wrench set, pliers, penetrating oil, a 1/2" ratchet, a set of 1/2" sockets, a car jack AND a rope!
    Here what you do: You lift the car then you unscrew the bolts that connect the drive shaft with the differential and put the rope around the shaft, then with one leg hold the shaft axle and pull like crazy the robe, voila!! your car runs again, and it's VERY easy.!! AWESOME?? lol

  • @soulassassin0g

    Or you could just pop the clutch assuming you drive a manual transmission car. You're pretty much screwed if you drive an automatic. Maybe next time make sure your car isn't wasting any valuable energy after you turn it off and walk away.

    • @sissonsk

      Power is applied to one tire only by the engine. That is how this works. The drive tire is the one off the ground and is used to turn the engine over.

      The diferential will apply the power to the wheel with the least resistance (the one in the air, atleast thats how i think it works, correct me if im wrong)

    Don't do this thing with car that have ASP, AESP, SPS or similar tracking control system, don't do that with BMW or Mercedes back wheel drivers, you might damage your car badly, otherwise it's ok on 2000.year or older cars.

    can work in some cases,,, tho 9 times out of 10 you would just push the car fast, jump in and drop the clutch in gear, (try 2nd).
    interesting. I'll toss a long rope in the boot just in case I would have to try this ^.^

    Maybe with warm engine, which was just turned off. And the battery can't be completely dead. IMHO when you want to do this in cold morning you are chanceless. Much easier is just push car, jump in and then engage gear and start it (tested many times :))

    I don't think it would work on any car from this century though, the moment car's ESP detected one wheel slipping (= the in the air) it would engage breaks on that wheel to direct torque to the one on the ground and there it goes, jack leaving a nice dent on the doorstep and car stalling. But I might be wrong ......

    Really good way to destroy your jack. Axel isnt lubed enough, youll pull your car right off the jack, screw up the jack, probably put a hole in the floorboard of your car, and possibly get run over by a car.

    Firstly the differential transfers energy to the wheel that has the less friction,that means if you jack the car with both wheels into the air you can stop either wheel with your hands as it transfers no torque if both don't have friction!
    If it has a locking differential or anything else the worst case scenario is that the car will fall down,in such case the engine will stall immediately!
    The most important thing that no ignorant alarmistic douchebag mentioned is DON'T wrap the rope around your hand!!!

  • @benturner4774
    @benturner4774 6 років тому

    You all say the car will run you over, the car is in 3 rd gear if the car falls off the jack the engine will stall out as the gear ratio is too high to pull at stand still. What happens when you drop the clutch in 1st with no throttle it stalls the same will happen if the car falls off the jack

  • @HillBilly-1

    this is very unsafe, and not to mention newer cars need enough battery power for the computers for it to start. If I leave the lights on and run the battery down i can't pop the clutch to start it, I've tried may times. When I had a bad starter wire I could pop the clutch but not with a dead battery. Computers need power, no distributor means electronic spark, no power, no spark, no start.

  • @robertcromwell9736
    @robertcromwell9736 7 років тому

    Will not work with a dead battery. May work with a low battery but not a dead one.
    Why? A couple of reasons.
    You need a battery to make spark and run the electric fuel pump.
    The alternator will not make any output voltage with some battery current to get it all excited and putting out.

    This will not work with out a battery with at least some voltage. Alternators do not work, unless there is a little current to create a field in the alternator. A generator would work as it has residual magnetism. And like he said, only manual transmissions. But who has that anymore?

  • @Slave10110
    @Slave10110 8 років тому

    This is just clutch starting a manual. You don't need a rope or a jack to do this, and it's much safer to do it without them. A good push in neutral, and then you pop it in first and drop the clutch.

  • @upsidedown4155

    yeah may not be safe but when your stuck in a forest and no one knows your there and its the only choice i'd rather chance hurting myself then starve or freeze to death,
    if you break down at a supermarket you would be a fool to try it,
    if the tranverse engine layout is the cam pulleys to the left and gearbox to the right as you look at the engine such as a golf mk4
    go for the wheel nearest to the gearbox as often its a shorter driveshaft which means more torque is outputted to the engine by the manual spin,
    again with the same layout jack the front up with the engine idle and not in gear you find one wheel starts to spin, you stop it spinning then the wheel on the other side starts to spin, this drive layout also explains why fwd cars tend to spin on one wheel when doing a burnout,
    as the driveshaft is shorter so less twist to it and so transfers a higher level of torque to the drive wheel
    when in gear with one wheel on the ground and the other in the air the power will only go to the free wheel so the car wont move but the wheel in the air will spin at speed

    this method is ridiculous it would take so much less time to just push hop in the driver seat and pop the clutch in second opposed to taking time putting the vehicle on a jack jacking it up wrapping a rope around and yanking for dear life not to mention a second person needs to be there to release the clutch to start the motor this method takes longer and is much more difficult
