My first car a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass (gutless) wouldn't crank when turning the key. I hooked a wire straight to the starter terminal and left it under the hood. To start the car I would have to put the key in the ignition, turn it to ON and pop the hood. Then I would touch my custom starter wire to the positive battery terminal and sparks would fly every where and the car would crank and start. I gotta a lot of funny looks while doing that.
Norm T: I tried swapping the relay with another one and it didn't fix it. I think it was the neutral switch that was the problem. It miraculously started working properly on it's own after a month or so.
Klingensmith AutoTech A short in the ignition switch would cause the starter to crank continously, or if it was a short to ground it would blow the ignition fuse, cause a fire, drain the battery etc etc. Didn't have any of those problems, like I said it was most likely a faulty neutral switch.

wont work on most cars worth stealing, actually pretty much all cars wroth stealing this wont work on, even so, if its an automatic transmission, the wheel will lock when you try to turn. Also, most people dont leave their hood open when they park somwhere, making this a really piss poor way to hotwire a car.

People seemed entirely too confused by this video and the fact that he had a key. This presumes there is a starting problem to diagnose, not that you lack a key and need to use JUST a paper clip. One would first replace the key by going to the dealer or would replace the lock cylinder and get a new key that way. Then you can at least start the car without hot-wiring (which he mentioned) if everything else is good. The point is that if you do NOT have a key, and think you have starting issues, you probably need to get a key first as lacking one IS a starting issue.

My 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager Van has a no crank no start condition or a "Open" condition. I used a remote switch to test the starter to the solenoid which deemed the starter as good. With the key in the Run position and the remote starter switch utilized the van will not run. Cranks only. I am leaning towards an issue at the key lock switch. Watching your video gave me the insight to try the jump at the relay as that will test the wiring from the power distribution center to the solenoid and eliminate that side of circuit as an "Open" however will need to also confirm the signal at the Engine Control Module. More troubleshooting to continue for my (No crank no start Van) What is so weird about all this as I drive it daily with over 300k miles on it. This last Wednesday I parked it for about an hour and went to get in it and go and nothing. So it has been a mystery to me as why that happened after driving it under a shade tree to park. Guess that is why I am a shade tree mechanic. Got lucky about that parking as it is now hot here.
Jimmy Yes. If a diesel engine is running, the only option to turn it off is to choke it. There is a valve in the intake System that closes when the key is turned.
Jimmy disconnecting the battery won't kill the car as long as the alternator is good, like if you have a junk battery that needs a jump all the time its literally just as good as no battery, so disconnecting a battery won't kill the car unless that alternator is bad, a way to kill it is to cut off the spark to the engine, or to cut the fuel off
Mr, you have taught me many things. Maybe the most important lesson I am learning from you is to think and diagnose first until the solution is narrowed down.
My car doesn't get enough power through the key to start the car so There's a switch that's connected directly to the starter relay. It only starts with the key on the 3rd Position so if the car gets stolen it won't go nowhere and besides the fact people that steal Cars don't know how to drive stick.... lololololol
you are obviously not from Ireland, joyriders only steal manual gearbox cars, but nowadays cars can't be stolen. I'm talking about the 70's 80's and 90's.
My 99 Ram 1500 was stolen, They used a screwdriver, in the door lock to get in, then also used it in the ignition. Went out last December to go to work, and my truck was gone. At least the RCMP got the crack heads, later that evening. '60's Mopars, run a jumper cable from the battery terminal, to the coil positive, no steering column lock. I don't know how far you'd get before the electronic ignition module would get fried. Because you are bypassing the ballast resistor, and that ignition system can't handle 12 volts to the coil
Have you heard of late 90s mustang with starting problems. I could spray starting fluid in the intake and it would start but after a few days it wouldn't start again unless I repeated the same process. Changed pumps, filter relays , and fuel rail and it still does the same.
Nice, well actually I thought it was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT??,cos IT’S BEAUTIFULLY SLOWLY, STEADILY AND VERY CLEARLY EXPLAINED???. GOOD ON YA MATE AND KEEP THE GOOD WORK UP👍👍👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.
I am badly confused, why would anyone want to use a paperclip to start a car, especially when you also need a key in the ignition, so why not make it even simpler, if you turn your key one step further it will start your car, and no need for a paperclip or removing any relay.
true, if you can bridge ignition circuit and then use paperclip, you can, but you won't drive very far as the steering won't turn, secondly if your car has an immobiliser, it won't fire up either.
if you add a power line to a ACC line in the fuse box you don't need a key (unless you have a chip or VATS) so bridge a always hot line to acc then use the paper clip to start the car then your golden. this is obviously bad for the electrical system and should never be done but criminals do it.
there was a time when I had to start my 91 samurai from the electric starter motor, i liked doing that with unnecessarily big stuff, like a crowbar or an axe, since i did have a shitload of tools in there, and that was a fun show for whoever was around. I replaced the ignition switch with some buttons since then. But this wouldn't work on modern cars with chip keys.
joe asbury so you know how to adjust valves but didn't know you could bump the starter? bumping starter wouldn't be precise enough. turning the crank by hand is the only way when adjusting valve lash.
Great info. Going to do this next time i'm troubleshooting NCNS. Also gives me an idea on how to do this with no jumper! If it works, will make a video for it :)
I would have to say that a good 75% or more of the vehicles on the road nowadays are protected by an immobilizer controlled by a chip in the key. This is good info though and well presented. Great job
Ok,great it worked!!!! Now I just have to find the problem. I had already switched the relay with another relay and that didnt work......Unless both relays are bad. Thanks for all your help though...it is so nice hearing the car running again!!! Our battery kept dying, but took a boost very well. We decided to go ahead and have a new battery installed. All was good for 2 weeks and then she would not start. Two days before the left turn indicator light was beeping fast and the high beam lighr on dash was flickering. So then, like I was saying, she would not start at all, completely dead. no:)
It's almost as if he used a ruler
Gambino That's what I was going for.
Hoping someday soon you have your own TV show. We need more of you. I have learned SO MUCH from you. Tankew.
Damn, dude, I thought that was pretty impressive.
Very good informative of the ignition system function with good circuit diagram and explanation. thanks for your video and continue the same
can u do this on a fuel pump circuit
Aaron Frazier yes
Aaron Frazier
I was going to ask that. Thanks
My 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager Van has a no crank no start condition or a "Open" condition. I used a remote switch
to test the starter to the solenoid which deemed the starter as good. With the key in the Run position and the remote
starter switch utilized the van will not run. More troubleshooting to continue for my (No crank no start Van) What is
so weird about all this as I drive it daily with over 300k miles on it. This last Wednesday I parked it for about an
hour and went to get in it and go and nothing. So it has been a mystery to me as why that happened after driving it
under a shade tree to park. Guess that is why I am a shade tree mechanic. Got lucky about that parking as it is now hot here.
So wait.. if you used the paper clip to turn the car on... how do you turn it off?
Jimmy unless you're working on a diesel engine. They will keep running untill you stall it.
Jimmy Yes. If a diesel engine is running, the only option to turn it off is to choke it. There is a valve in the intake System that closes when the key is turned.
Jimmy disconnecting the battery won't kill the car as long as the alternator is good, like if you have a junk battery that needs a jump all the time its literally just as good as no battery, so disconnecting a battery won't kill the car unless that alternator is bad, a way to kill it is to cut off the spark to the engine, or to cut the fuel off
Horse McHorseMan
Horse McHorseMan the key back to off.
Mr, you have taught me many things. Maybe the most important lesson I am learning from you is to think and diagnose first until the solution is narrowed down.
that does not apply to every car
What kinda car do u have
Your presentation was excellent.
I'm talking about the 70's 80's and 90's.
sounds like you have a kill switch ,maybe the previous owner put it in, and somehow was engaged or you have a serious shorted circuit
You obviously never met any real thugs or gangstas, just a buch of kids playing with their parents guns.
its a race car back off m8 everyone knows that race cars have main ignition switches....
Very 👍. Thank u. Dealing with 2010 traverse....turned out wiring harness bad
well for a manual u have to press on the clutch to start ur car
RebelDipper 21 noob
Not if it’s in neutral
@@assembledsugar6587 I don't have to. 🤷 As long as my car is in neutral, it will start without pushing in the clutch.
Amy Ladwig oh cool
My new youtube car guy nice job 👍
Car + Paperclip = Mustang
0:30
Bruhhhhhhhh
AMAZING EXPLANATION and theme of troubleshooting
Great Job.
clean the battery please
Lawn tractor won't start. Why?
Have you heard of late 90s mustang with starting problems. I could spray starting fluid in the intake and it would start but after a few days it wouldn't start again unless I repeated the same process. Changed pumps, filter relays , and fuel rail and it still does the same.
"entertainment only" on a how to video
Nice, well actually I thought it was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT??,cos IT’S BEAUTIFULLY SLOWLY, STEADILY AND VERY CLEARLY EXPLAINED???. GOOD ON YA MATE AND KEEP THE GOOD WORK UP👍👍👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.
I am badly confused, why would anyone want to use a paperclip to start a car, especially when you also need a key in the ignition, so why not make it even simpler, if you turn your key one step further it will start your car, and no need for a paperclip or removing any relay.
you dont need the key watch the entire video or my video on whether you can hotwire a car.
true, if you can bridge ignition circuit and then use paperclip, you can, but you won't drive very far as the steering won't turn, secondly if your car has an immobiliser, it won't fire up either.
It's a way to tell if your key ignition is bad or if you have a wiring problem.
if you add a power line to a ACC line in the fuse box you don't need a key (unless you have a chip or VATS) so bridge a always hot line to acc then use the paper clip to start the car then your golden. this is obviously bad for the electrical system and should never be done but criminals do it.
samdomding cause you not interesting in intelligent stuff.
there was a time when I had to start my 91 samurai from the electric starter motor, i liked doing that with unnecessarily big stuff, like a crowbar or an axe, since i did have a shitload of tools in there, and that was a fun show for whoever was around. I replaced the ignition switch with some buttons since then. But this wouldn't work on modern cars with chip keys.
Screw this too much work
thats too much work. OMG.
Wow! Now I know how to start a car with just a paper clip and a key!. This would be useful in adjusting valves on some cars
joe asbury so you know how to adjust valves but didn't know you could bump the starter? bumping starter wouldn't be precise enough. turning the crank by hand is the only way when adjusting valve lash.
joe asbury how do you turn your car off?
As always the man myth and legend
Thanks for the video it really came in handy for me it really works.
Thanx again....
Great info. Going to do this next time i'm troubleshooting NCNS. Also gives me an idea on how to do this with no jumper! If it works, will make a video for it :)
Sweet, sounds good. cheers
lol
So I guess it didn’t work?! Lol
I just wish I knew more about cars!!and i wonder if its safe to trust a wire clip to keep starting it until i figure out the problem.I know the battery is good, its new. 😊 UPDATE-OMG I DID have 2 bad relays,i tried a different relay and the car started!! 👍
I wish I could like this a thousand times!!!
I really enjoyed and learned from your explanation of the Starting System and relays !!
IhaveA2000Mercury Grand Marquis I need ur help desperately I was changing out TheFlyWheelon the car ,Well I needed a tool air I popped the trunk to get the tool well here is the part that makes me learn from dumb mistakes...I forgot that the starter wire s were hanging is they touched hthe cross support bar at the bottom of the car So new the car smoking bad well uyank the battery checked for turned wures none were found but the smoked only came from the driver side fiewalp and on rage inside of the car please gel me fix what ever the problem may be I kniw that the oroblem had or come that dumb mistake that I made please help me out ...ScottLJohnsonSr
You saved me . Thank you 🙏🏾
I just love your hood prop!!!
Great video, well done! I appreciate the help!
Thanks for your valuable info❤ I have a Mercedes clk320 and I need to know if there’s a difference using copper wire vs paper clip? Your response is appreciated. Tks
Man!! That was soo Sweet!!! Thanks A lot and keep up the Good Work!!!
No lights on the dash, no power in the door locks or radio....nothing.
