The shooter texted and wrote in his journal about wanting help so badly, but when he had the counselor's undivided attention he denied everything he was feeling. He could have jumped at the chance to tell another adult he was suffering and wanted serious help asap.

I do agree with you there but I think the counselor was being very naive when a teacher sends you a student with drawing such as that on it his locker and his book bag should have been searched. And when the gun was found authorities called.

Kid was a manipulative, lying mess, the counselor was a joke (and should be held accountable) and the parents were too inconvenienced by the kid to actually parent him. Who in their right mind would provide a socially isolated, loner kid access to a gun? I am NOT against guns.

@@susanbrooks9317 it would not be uncommon for a young person to draw something they liked. If he'd drawn a female student would you have assumed he intended to rape her? And if he'd used the weapon to delete himself would his parents have been charged? I think not!

To answer Peter’s question, I think the parents are equally culpable. For me it’s about the inaction of both parents when they saw the drawing that day knowing he had access to the gun he drew and begged for, along with alarming statements written on the drawing.

As a long-time educator, the drawing on the Math paper was a major red flag. I would definitely feel like pretty thorough questioning of the student should happen. Checking back pack, probably even calling authorities, student definitely going home that day. Because NOTHING was done, I feel that mom, dad, AND school officials were negligent. Even in elementary school, if a child talks/draws about shooting someone, the child is questioned to see if there is suspicion of danger.

Exactly and I'm not a teacher but I would have done the exact same thing because it's a cry. I read my kids' journal and papers... There are things I know, that they don't know I know 😅 I try to give them some privacy, but I still "check in" just to make sure there isn't something big in their lives that I need to know! The boys I have to break into social media... mostly girl stuff, but some stuff gets deleted and they can't figure out how it happened... lol. Last kiddo is almost 18 ( we have 4 boys, 1 girl) so this mom is exhausted. It is work to make sure the kids stay out of trouble or not find themselves in normal teen situations BUT dealing with a kid with mental issues was very stressful and I would never allow him to have a gun. Even when we were getting him help, I hid everything and slept with one eye open... if these parents would have done 20% of what most parents do, they would have been more aware, and this could have possibly been prevented. Maybe it is just me and being in the Healthcare system, my red flags were flying and I am just left with why in the world didn't they listen to this kid and then get him a gun of all things while he was dealing with the stuff they already knew about?! Just blows my mind.

This is a very interesting case! In South Africa, our laws on gun ownership seem to be much stricter than the USA. It’s much more difficult in South Africa to get a gun licence to be able to legally own a gun. Like the USA, we have the right to have arms, but we cannot just walk into a gun shop and buy a gun. Yes we do have a lot of crime but not school shootings like in the USA. We had a recent case where a child tried to shoot the teachers at his school and it was big news as it is so rare here. We are waiting to see if his father will be held accountable because the law requires the owner to have the gun secured at all times. So it must either be in the safe locked away (and the only person with the key or combination must be the gun owner), or physically on the person.
My personal opinion is the child would have potentially tried to get a kitchen knife to harm the teachers had he not managed to get the gun. I don’t know anyone on this earth who secures kitchen knives. Same as Ethan, what would have stopped Ethan getting a kitchen knife if he could not get the gun? Would they still have gone after his parents had it been a knife?!
Ethan’s parents were negligent but I’m just not sure if I agree that they are guilty on involuntary manslaughter.

I feel that Jennifer sealed her own fate. To use a word I don't like using...it was absolutely stupid when she was asked if she could go back, would she change anything. She said NO. WHAT???? 4 young people lost their lives, several others were shot & everyone connected to those families or anyone in the school will be changed forever. Even in her own life, she will be in prison. How on earth could she say no? I was utterly shocked when I heard her say that! I would imagine James was smart enough to know how Jennifer's mouth did her in making him decide not to testify.
I agree with what I have seen several people here say. I am from Michigan and have had hunters around me all my life, including my husband. But this gun he used is not a gun for hunting.

IMO, the counselor wasn't doing much to address the teachers' emails/concerns, or taking them very seriously either, until maybe that fateful last day, & even then idk why he couldn't have consulted with school security or kept EC in his office til school was out, and he's a trained professional! So idk why the parents are being held responsible for the way things happened after leaving the school, because I believe the Mom agreed to call someone to get him help the following day, once the school informed her that there was a concern. Why didn't the counselor ask her to get help for EC after the first email about looking at bullets? Yes they were busy, maybe not great parents, but I think the school holds much more blame in ignoring concerned teachers & not doing more leading up to the shooting.

It’s impossible to know everything your child is doing/ thinking/ feeling but there are a lot of parents who don’t try or pay attention. There are many situations where there is serious calls for helping, behaviour changes/ issues, and mood changes that a lot of parents ignore because they can’t be bothered and that needs to change. Maybe potential repercussions like this may open some parent’s eyes and encourage them to actually try. During the moms trial there were texts to dad expressing concern and freaking out because Ethan wasn’t home from school yet and dad didn’t pick him up- obviously she was concerned about something so why didn’t she try to get help and support for him to figure out what was going on. Bottom line is this is extremely devastating and heartbreaking.

I think the witnesses from the school staff are more interested in evading accountability rather than testifying honestly.
They claim the drawing did not give them reasonable suspicion to do a bag search, but then try to infer the exact same drawing should have prompted the parents to immediately take him home.
Not sure where I stand on the dad buying him a gun. I’m from Australia (a country with very strict gun control) so to me it feels very uncomfortable that the dad bought him a gun, especially considering his mental and emotional issues. But, where they live it seems culturally normal as a leisure activity and obviously legal. So the mindset it making that decision would be different.

    Ethan was neglected.
I do believe the parents are guilty of that.
I think Ethan would have done something like this at some point. Even without the purchase of a gun. He wanted to see people suffer.
Them buying him the gun enabled him to do this. Just truly sad.

I was also thinking about the way I do my parenting... It may also be because i've done half of what they are already trying to plan to do, and I catch them before they can do it. 😂 I've never done anything really bad, (just normal not thinking ahead, kid stuff), but I don't trust any teenagers... Not even my own a hundred percent, it's like a 70/30 situation until they prove me wrong.

I had a HS student turn in a paper titled “My Day of Hell”. It was an assignment about their school day. I took paper to the principal; mom called; had meeting w mom and all teachers. This boy had serious mental issues the school DID NOT KNOW about. The mother told us about him; took him out of school and he went to in-patient treatment center. The mother accepted responsibility and got help for her child.

I think they are equally culpable…he begged for therapy, the gun was bought physically by dad, but I think Mom bought the bullets, and neither of them made sure the gun was secured.

I didn’t listen to the whole trial. Were there the crazy text messages from dad to son like there was with mom? And the whole testimony about hearing voices had to be a joke hurt Jennifer. The testimony I watched James sounded more caring. I do think that if jurors know mom was guilty then it would sway the verdict. Jennifer for all her crying in court came across as a very uncaring parent. I still get fired up about letting Ethan know that he was a mistake or however she put it.

As part of health instruction, schools should instruct children about mental illness. My parents used to argue about what caused my mother’s mental illness. My father said, “It’s your mother’s fault!” My mother said, “It’s your fault! You drove me crazy!” Students should be taught: mental illness is nobody’s fault; it’s an illness some people have. Students should learn: symptoms, treatment, what symptoms should be reported to a teacher or counselor.
