The great Roberto Duran was outboxed by the great Wilfredo Benitez. Some people think that Duran was just a ferocious brawler with hands of stone, but Duran was also a great boxer with excellent defense. Benitez was a master of defense, and he proved it against Duran. Watch the whole fight, not just these highlights, and you will see how frustrated Duran became trying to hit Benitez. Even when Benitez was on the ropes, Duran could not rough Benitez up or land any clean shots. Benitez fought in the same era as "The Four Kings" - Duran, Hagler, Leonard, and Hearns. In my opinion, there should be "Five Kings" from that era, and Benitez is the fifth.
The late '70s and the 80's were the years of some of the greatest light to middleweights that I've ever seen. Some of the most fantastic rivalries in boxing history, too. Leonard, Duran Benitez, Haggler and so many more. That was some time to see greatness. Thanks to UA-cam we can remember those men and their wars.
l agree 100% also the feather weights like Gomez, Camacho, Sanchez, Chavez, Arguello also Aron Pryor, Chapo Rosario, Mancini wow that era was truly loaded with so much talent and rivalries Thank You warriors for the wars and memories, God Bless you all!!! Also Hector Camacho, Salvador Sanchez, Aron Pryor, Alexis Arguello and Chapo Rosario may you rest in peace in the presence of almighty God!!!
Wildred Benitez MUST be included in the conversation when you speak of Duran, Leonard and Hearns - Benitez is terribly underrated. The only reason I didn't include Marvin Hagler is that he came on a bit later - Early on it was Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Benitez just fighting each other for the Welterweight crown(s) at that time - All (except Benitez) fought Hagler when they all decided to move up to Middleweight.
No doubt Glenn, but I feel The Marvelous One should stand at the top of the heap Just a relentless WARRIOR who was ALL business and ALWAYS showed class. Just can't say that about the others sadly. Loved them All but just a tad biased towards Marvin.
@@keithlauderjr1691 I get that, I love Hagler, but Duran really should be Top Of The Heap among these names. He was a natural-135-pounder, 12 lbs below the weights of SRL and Hearns, 25 pounds less than Hagler. I know that Duran is considered part of “The Four Kings” (maybe Benitez would’ve been a better ‘fourth’?), but the VERY BEST Roberto Duran was sorta left behind when he moved up to Welter. He took one single, solitary loss at 135, a non-title bout loss to Esteban De Jesus, which Duran proceeded to avenge, twice, by the time he moved up. And he only moved up because there was more money fighting these guys who were now HUGE STARS in the US, SRL especially, than he could earn at 135. Duran, really, wasn’t the “4th king”, he was his own thing entirely. If he was American, he’d be considered the greatest boxer since Sugar Ray Robinson.

This is why I call them the Fabulous FIVE. You cant forget about Benitez, he had this masterful performance against Duran, and incredible fight with Leonard, and challenged the way larger and stronger man in Hearns. Such a savage, and one of the best defensive boxers ever slips punches like the matrix, but wasnt afraid to trade shots either. Love this man
Benitez's best victory in my opinion. He owned Duran that night. His body attack was terrific, and as always, his defense was superb. Wilfred Benitez was a wonderful fighter. He was a world champ at age 17, winning the Jr. Welterweight championship by split decision. An amazing accomplishment.
Durán was a old veteran fighter thirty something fighting a young blood prospect whit only 21 year old more bigger in weight classes but its true he won if has to be so I tell you a secret if he fights Duran on is prime he well get a ko believe it.
Durán fights 5 eras of boxing the better one was in is 135 pounds, wen Durán move to 147 he has 73 fights, that Duran was past is prime and also he was not training well like before he was drinking partying and whit women's. Ray Arcel tould him only Duran wins Duran for one reason he's indiscipline and that indiscipline make him pay a big price lossing some fights that he don't have to lose. Also he damage he's record of fights whit a bunch of soft fighter to try to pay all is debt, being an old man. But the people who knows about boxing there are clear enough. that Duran well train for a combat will eat you alive.
It really should have been the Fab 3. If it had to be a Fab 4, Benitez should've replaced the classless Duran. Both combined for 6 losses in 7 fights against the top 3 (only Duran's decision in the first fight with Leornard). Benitez fared better than Duran (knocking down Hearns the weakest of the big 3), but he never faught Hagler. Duran showed no class in the Leonard fight as he did here in the Benitez fight. He lost 5 out of 6 to the other 4. I was a Duran fan, but he had no class lost respect, thus he got his ass kicked. So my Mt. Rushmore would include Benitez over Duran.
Johnny Rutz Yeah, the loser always wants a rematch, basketball, football, checkers, Leornard gave rematches. Plus I said If there was a Fab 4 it would be Benitez, not Duran, so I gave him props so what's your point?
Benitez was a great champion. My heart goes out to him and his family. He's really in bad shape now. I wish some of the ex Fighters that are financially able would send some money to his family in Puerto Rico. God bless him and his family

Q va compa Benítez esta como un Zombie en la actualidad es como estar en una muerte en vida y Leonarth, Hearns , Palomino , y Duran gozando de la vida ...
I remember the fight, nice win for Benítez. Durán started fighting in 1968, this was his 77th fight in 1982. Arguably the greatest lightweight ever, he started losing when he got older and moved up weight classes. After his first fight with Sugar Ray he was 72-1. He gets remembered too much for the more famous fights as a veteran past his prime. Before that he dominated a weight division for years.
Average fight fan is oblivious to what Duran accomplished at lightweight! Everything after lightweight is unimaginable.Truly one of the greatest of all time.
2 of the 4 greatest to ever step into the ring! Leonard and Hearns were naturally bigger and got the best of them but Benitez and Duran were equal any day of the week..... Agree 100%. Leonard hearns Duran and Benitez were all magnificent fighters that fought successfully in different weights. They all adapted to being comfortable in uncomfortable weights. No doubt the great Wilfred benitez had Duran's number. Duran was great and still in his stride. Wilted took care of business. Truely a great. Not many could do that to Duran. Peace n smoke
I remember Duran was angrier than usual for this fight. He really wanted to knock out Wilfredo. He fought angry and got schooled. No shame in loosing to El Radar.
People need to realize that Duran actually came into this fight in good shape. Thing is that the weight required for this fight was perfect for Benitez' frame. I'm Mexican but Benitez is my favorite.
Duran was slow and sluggish in this fight. Sugar Ray Leonard at ringside said "I can see that Duran is weak in this fight. When I fought Duran in Montreal he was very strong, but when I fought him in New Orleans he was very weak." Duran at the time was in a bad mental state due to the all flack he took after New Orleans.
No, creo que Durán haya llegado en su mejor forma. Luego de su triunfo con Leonard en welter, su conducta hacia el entrenamiento riguroso se desplomó. Una lástima, porque podría haber sido más grande de lo que fué.
Brilliant performance from Benitez. He easily outboxed the GOAT. Duran looked over the hill in this fight, but was still very dangerous. I'm from Panama and we thought this was the end for Duran (boy were we wrong!) but Benitez earned our respect this night. God bless both of these legendary warriors.
String Theory Guitars It's so sad that Benitez has such effects from his boxing days that he can't enjoy his fame or remember his glories& depends on others for his care.
Benitez was old too in this fight. Plus don't forget Esteban De Jesus was the first fighter to Duran when Duran was at his prime. But Duran came back and beat Esteban twice, and in a bad way too.
...and Duran coming back and beating Barkley was epic!! One of the greatest sports feats I ever witnessed. It ranks neck and neck with George Foreman winning the heavyweight title at 45.

One of Benitez's greatest victories right here. He was absolute prime-time for this one. Duran was alot stronger in this fight than he was in his horribly abused weight-drained emaciated physical bodied self from the 2nd Leonard fight. Benitez rocked Duran numerous times in this but Duran had no quit in him in this fight because like i previously stated,he was alot stronger and more properly prepared going into this than he was in the 2nd Leonard fight. I think though that Duran should've tried getting Benitez in the corner more often, and maybe then he would've laned more and been more effective overall but still,a very game and courageous effort by Duran. I think he rightfully redeemed his dignity in this fight. Going into the 2nd Leonard fight Duran had weight-drained himself in a very radically unhealthy way(230 lbs to 147 within 10 weeks) which causes great amounts of inner energy expenditure which is why he looked so nonchalant and casual in his obvious lack of fighting spirit right from the get-go in the 2nd Leonard fight. Also, draining massive amounts of weight so rapidly causes a tremendous drain on you're stamina and recovery abilities,as well as you're punch-resistance. In this fight though,Duran was a bit outclassed, but nevertheless,he was obviously alot stronger than he was in the 2nd Leonard fight. Thus why he was able to keep coming forward with constant energy and valiant effort, even though Benitez had his number.

That fight taught Duran the difference between boxing and slugging. Another was Alfredo escalera. Duran visited benitez in his final days. Gave his family money. Cried the day he died. That was back in the dayz.
Fue buen boxeador pero si era un radar parece que los golpes surtieron efecto en su salud.
Benitez was Awesome!

SRL said the same thing. TH struggled with Benitez so did Hagler and sugar ray
Benitez was washed up by the time he was 27. Duran was winning Championships against big middleweights at age 37.
Marston Davis too me that was the Golden Age of boxing from Featherweight to Middleweight
You forgot Hearns

Also Hector Camacho, Salvador Sanchez, Aron Pryor, Alexis Arguello and Chapo Rosario may you rest in peace in the presence of almighty God!!!
Amen. Welterweight alone was loaded with Duran, Leonard, Cuevas, Hearns, Palamino.
Тои думан
Wildred Benitez MUST be included in the conversation when you speak of Duran, Leonard and Hearns - Benitez is terribly underrated. The only reason I didn't include Marvin Hagler is that he came on a bit later - Early on it was Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Benitez just fighting each other for the Welterweight crown(s) at that time - All (except Benitez) fought Hagler when they all decided to move up to Middleweight.
And hagler to
@kevindlinc I agree great fighter
No doubt Glenn, but I feel The Marvelous One should stand at the top of the heap Just a relentless WARRIOR who was ALL business and ALWAYS showed class. Just can't say that about the others sadly. Loved them All but just a tad biased towards Marvin.
I disagree not after seeing him against Moore

Such a savage, and one of the best defensive boxers ever slips punches like the matrix, but wasnt afraid to trade shots either. Love this man
Agreed 100% Benitez, De Jesus..wow so many great great fighters
Benitez's best victory in my opinion. He owned Duran that night. His body attack was terrific, and as always, his defense was superb. Wilfred Benitez was a wonderful fighter. He was a world champ at age 17, winning the Jr. Welterweight championship by split decision. An amazing accomplishment.
Durán was a old veteran fighter thirty something fighting a young blood prospect whit only 21 year old more bigger in weight classes but its true he won if has to be so I tell you a secret if he fights Duran on is prime he well get a ko believe it.
@@ricardocambell4065 BS! Cuz a few fights later Duran beat a 24 year old Davey Moore, fact is Benitez schooled Duran that night ...bottomline.
They always take about the fab 4 and forget about benitez he belongs in that group a great champion
Thomas Russo. I agree.

I remember the fight, nice win for Benítez. Durán started fighting in 1968, this was his 77th fight in 1982. Benitez was special. I feel so bad that things ended the way they did for him. I won't get into the Floyd hater discussions, as it seems pointless. He hit Benitez with it cleanly a bunch of times and Benitez was a master at making guys miss. That punch ended guys at 135 pounds... Benitez was just too big. But man, how did he disguise it standing right in the pocket? Duran always amazed me because he was always right in the pocket. Benitez's best victory. He was masterful in this fight. At this point in his career, Duran didn't have any legs. It would have been interesting to have seen them match up at welterweight. Benitez is very underrated, he was an all-time great. Incredible how most of Duran's career was remembered for what he did from the first Leonard fight, which happened 12 pounds over the weight that he fought at for 12 years. He fought for 33 years, but most fight fans think of him when he fought at heavier weights and was slow-footed during the last 20 years. His longevity competing at the high level that he did, coupled with the long dominance at his natural weight is what puts him near the top of the all-time great fighters list.
Claramente gano wilfredo benitez...saludos desde México!!
Rarely have we seen this much mastery in the ring at the same time. Wow.
I would have said that Duran is washed up here, but he went on the beat Moore and Barkley.

Benitez was truly amazing. A true work of art. had it all---speed, power, and defensive ability like almost no one else. Shame his career was over when he was about 25, and that today he is in bad shape.
loyaldude10 His career was over when he was 25 because he had been fighting since he was a kid. No wonder he became the youngest champion ever at 17 and will remain the youngest ever because boxing no longer permits boxers to fight at that young age anymore. By the time he was 25 he had aged way beyond his natural years because although he was winning, the grind for such a young kid who wasn't fully developed yet was too much. Benitez is one of the greatest champions ever.
He did not have much power. Just good enough.
31 KO's out of 53 wins. Almost 60% KO rate is good power.
Ah Benitez, his dad had to drag him out of club to get him ready for a fight. I don't know anybody who slips punches better than him, too bad he liked to party too much.
bflo1000 that's what man him so great
and he can slip without squatting down he could block body shots while seeing the heads shots coming and move his head just enough to avoid while countering with his own shots wilfredo benitez the greatest defensive fighter ever along with many other but no one avoided punches in the fashion in which he did he had a smooth rhytm
Everybody making the dough is going to party. Benitez turned pro at 17. Sure he partied. He was living his age. They all party, some just know when to go home and get ready for work. They're no different than the rest of us
Tracy Davis That’s why he was called ‘The Radar’. He had a gift. So special boxer! Great Wilfred Benitez, the youngest world champion ever at 17 years old!

@@EminiMagic I agree. Whenever Duran was in shape and motivated he was basically unbeatable
🇵🇷💪 we need another Benitez
Benitez uno de los mejores de la historia frustró a Duran que en esa época todavía era uno de los terrores del ring
You're nonchalantly trying to excuse Duran for quitting and losing against Leonard, even thought he was just simply outfoxed

Contrast this with SRL coming out retirement to fight Hagler. SRL delayed and delayed till he felt he was ready and Hagler was bored and lost his peak!!! You are right Duran and Hagler were OUTFOXED!! But Duran and Hagler are nowdays more respected by the business pros than SRL

No entiendo porque lo ponen a Durán en un escalón tan alto en el boxeo latinoamericano, su forma de pelear era horrible.
