You have killed it! Love this post. Although, I live in zone 11b and cannas and alocasias grow beautifully here outside - just keep them moist at all times.
I don't get it lol. My fiddle leaf is over 10 ft tall and it sits in my Minnesota dining room. I had no idea they were so temperamental because mine had always been so happy.
Im a totally noob and fell for all the calatheas. Literally 4 of the, stromanthe tristar I have killed twice... now I’m sitting here going. Oh. What have I done?
My fiddle leaf dropped a leaf at the exact same time you said “I hate this plant” 😂 I will never buy another FLF because I absolutely despise how big of drama queens they are
weird , I keep waiting for mine to die because it was one of my first plants and I came to dislike it with time ... but it's been thriving. It seems like they like severe neglect.
Mine had a new leaf when I looked over at it. I just ignore it and leave it in a bright corner spot near the window. My big one has three new leaves and I ignore that one too. He goes outside when the weather is nice and he lovesss it.
Lol! I don’t know whether to try loving my fiddle leave or despising the crap out of it. It dropped bunch of leaves when I tried fertilizing with Miracle Grow. Had to get a smaller one to fill in the ugly lanky trunk looks a beat up helicopter. M. Grow also killed severely a beautiful umbrella tree which was doing so well and all glossy. Never again M. Grow on inside plants hate it as well. 🤣 But I do love my huge alocasia have it by the dining room window and is so dramatic and gorgeous! Got a smaller one as well which finally grew a healthy leave, many leaves at first came out and they would go limp and die all mushy. But this last one is beautiful! 😍
Some of my plants I was SO ready to throw out surprisingly bounced back after I told them it's over, that plants only grow well if you only tell them nice things is a myth, threatening also works 😂
I ordered my alocasia odora variegata and once it got to my house, it immediately dropped two big leaves. It also seemingly had no pest issues but OF COURSE it got mealybugs AND spidermites like how dare you
turra parker alocasia are known for pests. Get on tiktok and search spider mites- it’s always a damn alocasia, so I read up on it. I’ll never get another one.
People ask me, "Why do you like plants so much?" And I say, "I have plants from the Amazon, Africa and South East Asia. They put up with drought, monsoons - pretty much every condition you can think of. They deal with pests of all sizes and have to deal with everything Mother Nature throws at them.....AND YET...if I water them on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday, they fucking die. If I move them an inch to the left. They fucking die." Basically what I'm saying is that, I hate all plants...but I keep buying them! And try my hardest to keep these little bastards alive!
Mine were dying but then i misted them like craaaazy like twice everyday and kept them in INDIRECT bright light and they stopped yellowing and dying and became so bushy and im so fckin proud gosh
Yes, my Ornata actually loves me but among my prayer plants, the Stromanthe Triostar is the one that stresses me out the most. I think it has the most beautiful leaves but I can’t keep them pretty.
My triostar is really laid back, just has the average humidity in my unheated kitchen, I think its actually in cactus compost as it was all I had at the time, it stays on the dry side, with bright indirect light, shielded by begonias
theactionindex they grow from rhizomes you can just cut them back and as they grow back they’ll be more acclimated to your environment but if you don’t have 50% humidity or higher you’ll always have issues on and off
theactionindex yes they need to have distilled or rainwater only. All calatheas do. I would flush the soil out with distilled too, just water HEAVILY and let all the water run through the bottom of the pot since you’ve been using tap.
@@amanda1838 I have at-least 50% humidity in summer thanks to proximity to the sea. This, however, was not enough for my Calathea. It was not C. Picta, but still, I am going to try and see if that helps.
My calathea ornata hasn't really given me any trouble but this video made me look at it nervously and start sweating like "you're not going to diva out on me are you?"
I have one too. It's been more or less fine so far, but I can tell it's a finicky plant and probably won't hold out for the long haul. Unless you have basically jungle-level humidity in your home, it's probably going to die.
@One Nation Under God my fiddle leaf fig is more than one year old now. when i bought it online, its leaves have black spots underneath. some leaves have brown tips. i left it in the garage with indirect bright light. the leaves fall off one after the other. i did not give up on her. i researched online as to how to care for this kind of indoor plant. at present its doing fine and had several healthy leaves.
stockinettestitch Yeah I think Calatheas are a hit or miss type of plant. I’ve had some since the beginning of my journey and 0 problems with them so I love some of them, but when they don’t like it in your house I do imagine they can drive you crazy! 😜 my warscewiczii is one of the loves of my life at the moment lol I just can’t stop looking at it.
Yes, completely agree-- they completely turn me off now! I have an orbifolia but it's a nightmare. I also have a musaica which is definitely an easier one, but I don't appreciate the attitude of calatheas.
It's weird, I got an ornata on a complete whim (it was like $4 and I was okay if it died for that price 😅) and it's doing fine in my house I run at ~55% humidity in here tho, which is probably saving it lol
Great video. Not negative at all very informative. I've had house plants for over 30 yrs. I have a parlor palm that is over 20 yrs old. I do very well with most house plants but one that hates me is peace lily. No matter what I do I cant keep them alive for more than a week. I've never had any of the plants you mentioned but they look finicky. I cant stand anything that drops leaves they are too messy.
Yeah, that remark make me laugh so hard :D :D So true. At the beginning of the winter I dared to move mine Ficus Beniamina approximately 3 meters away from the window (ran out of place by the window) and it dropped 1/2 of it's leaves :D (I can laugh because the spring came and it's going all right now)
I really don’t like succulents anymore. They are all I would purchase when I first started my collection, but now I can’t imagine myself caring for anymore ever again. I MIGHT purchase a Bear Paw again just because they’re sooo cute, but that’s it. I know succulents are supposed to be so forgiving and easy to care for but I’ve had nothing but trouble with them.
Same! I always think they’re so cute in the store but as soon as I get them home they stretch even if I put them in a south window, I can’t keep them small and cute
Same with me, at first I love buying succulents but they die easily for me but I still got a few succulents that I propagated and I put some in our backyard lol hoping it will still grow more there but then foliage and tropical plants are now the ones I really adore and they dont die as easily as succulents lol.
They need as much light as possible, (south facing window) so if you don't have that and can't supplement with a grow light many of them with start to etiolate and look a little crappy although some like aloe vera, sanseveria and rhipsalis can take lower light. They need incredibly well draining soil, 70% perlite some can even live in entirely pumice or an equivalent gritty mix and lastly they like lots of neglect. I love my succulent and cacti collection and have been appreciating them more and more this spring as everything else in my house is so demanding. My succulent collection is in a room I don't spend a lot of time in and I tend to forget about them but they continue to thrive on my neglect. I water them maybe once every 3-4 weeks. They could do with a little more in summer but they will survive, they'll just get shrivelled and are usually revived quite easily. They need way less water in winter, almost none for cacti. They come in such a huge range of interesting shapes, it might be worth another go at some point given the right light and soil.
When I first started out with plants a fiddle leaf fig named Larry broke my heart. Everytime I pass by one I mutter biiiitch under my breath and stomp away. Dramatic possibly but I loved him.
One of my very first plants was a pretty large fiddle feaf fig and it is still going strong in my bedroom and putting out big new leaves. Lol maybe you all have such problems because of too much water+too little fertilizer? Mine is in a large plastic pot and has a thick layer of expanded clay aggregate under the dirt layer. I water it with fertilized water every 7-10 days depending on how warm the time of year is and occasionally spray the leaves, especially the growing point on the top with fresh water.
I basically abandoned my fiddle leaf outside under an awning and its loving life. It hasn't lost a single leaf and I barely water it. Some plants just love to be forgotten about I swear.
I also hate fiddle leaf figs....actually i hate all fig plants as something i'd grow. I only value them because of genetic diversity and a world is better to have more species, similar to my liking and appreciation for a tapeworm.... but theyre crap
@@oliverA4936 i like eating figs though. We've got a big fig tree in the garden that does great even with frost. Ficus plants in the house are definitively stress-inducing though
I don’t see why you were worried this would be rude. We all like different things and that’s ok and I love hearing what other people like and dislike. I totally share your opinion on the obliqua btw, my adansonii fulfills any needs that the obliqua could so I’m happy
I slightly disagree with some of his “opinions” becouse they are based in that he cant keep alive the plant, take the ficus benjamina for example ,he has lost leaves an most surely died, but only becouse its a plant that LOVES direct sunligh, mine is in my balcony(west facing)and it thrives ..its also a plant you should proon ,like roses... so basing an opinion in not being informed of the care ,or triying to make it grow somewhere it shouldnt ,I dont think that gives the right to say its not a good plant .Will still keep watching his videos ,and have learned a lot from him..but many coments on this video, are clearly based on plats he has killed due to not caring for them correctly 😩❤️
Hey, everyone has his/her plants that one does not like. I have Opuntias and don't like them for the same reason you don't like them. Still, they're a great pest deterrent in my front yard, and I do like the blooms. I also hear you on the Ficus set: I have the variegated Ficus Benjamina -that someone threw away- and thankfully, I was able to wrap it in plastic to get it home and it sits above my humidifier, and loves where it is. Nevertheless, if there was an overrated plant that I don't like, it is the Alpheandra squarosa - the Zebra plant! Buy cut flowers instead! Thank you, Nick!
He probably thought that because we now live in a world where no one is allowed to have an opinion that might possibly make another human being sort of uncomfortable or force another person to critically think.
@@MrDanylui Again I am so with you. I respect Nick, but he has more plants than he can handle and does not give them the proper light. F. lyrata is totally light loving and like, direct sun loving.
Love your honesty, yep there are plants in the store that lure you with their beautiful foliage, you buy it with thoughts of how pretty it will look in your home but then they turn into fussy divas, nothing makes them happy, then they die, making you feel bad, please post another video, I really enjoyed this one 😊
This sassy side of you is killing me, you can tell you’re literally so nice that you don’t even want to trash talk plants but imagine if you let loose!!? 🙌
I have been saying this for a while: I'm so glad that the plants I like are hardy and not too expensive! I find it counterintuitive to pay large amounts of money for a very fussy plant that may die on me. So I totally agree with you, I save my love for the plants that have less dramatic attitudes 😂
@@DD-fh6gy String of hearts, golden and satin pothos, monstera deliciosa, Peperomia pepperspot/ruby cascade, and I love all my jade plants! Crassula ovata - normal jade and also the gollum jade! They grow easily, not fussy. String of hearts definitely gives lots of satisfaction as well as the pothos. Just give em lots of light!
I agree 100%, IMHO there are two types of plant people, the Collectors that will pay big dollars just to own a rare plant. Then the real plant people that truly love the plants and care for them, developing a life long true love of plants.
I hate plants. When co-workers take vacation and ask me to water their plants, I used round up. One day, I am going into a store, fill up my cart with plants and empty them all into the trash.
@@kristiewommack2635 mine too, almost died because the roots rotted. Tried soil propagating and 2 of the 10 strings I managed to save started growing. The other 8 are water propagating right now and have roots. Fingers crossed
Have you tried Donkey/burro tail succulents!? EXCELLENT for cold drafty homes! Plus tolerant of most lighting AND cuttings are super easy! Neglect gives them life i swear!💁
I'd love to see a video about super common plants. The houseplants that you see everywhere in stores, but are never shown on Instagram and social media because they're too "ordinary". Spider plants, money trees (pachira aquatica), parlor palms etc. I feel like because they're common they don't get enough love, and are treated as disposable.
I'm a fan of pothos: all its varieties and the cousin philodendron. Unfortunately, the big box stores where I live don't carry them as much as they should have. They are the best "common" house plants in my book. They are always beautiful and lush.
My first plant was a pothos. She hangs in the best window in the house and is called "my queen" when I take care of her. That and my Monstera Adansonii are equals. I'm still getting to know the rest of my plants, but the humble spider is quickly moving into third place.
Mine was a big drama queen, until I just stuck it in the spot I thought she liked and left her there... cut off the new flowers that teased me for a while, never grew full and then withered down as the older ones started turning green. Now, on the other hand, after I ignored it and cared for the newbie plants coming into my collection... guess what! She starts blooming and craving attention 😂 Like I said, they're drama queens.
I won't ever buy a maiden hair fern again in my life! I did everything for it, it had the perfect spot, perfect humidity, perfect room-temperature rain water, everything! And it died almost immediately. I really dont get why they're sold like everywhere!
Mine is doing absolutely great. Growing like mad in bathroom. Near west facing window. The trick is hydrospike, i think. It just takes water when it needs it.
@@deejeff8846 mine was in my bathroom right underneath a northern attic window that gets a little bit of direct sunlight but with tainted glas. Thought I had found the perfect spot but nah. I'll put a Sansevieria there instead 😂
Variegated 👏🏻 mon 👏🏻 stera They are just an excuse for people to wildly over price a plant. I’ve seen nodes, NODES selling for $50 a pop. Ridiculous. I will buy one when they go out of style in a few years. I’ve seen too many people pay like $500+ for an established plant just for it to die. Won’t catch me making that mistake.
@@dyingwaffle8359 Lesson learned, buy a seemingly underrated plant before it gets popular 😂 My aunt has an old pink princess philodendron, and ever since it got popular and expensive recently, the mother plant has been harvested 4 times and given to many of my relatives. More recently, she's given us another baby of it so that's a plus 😂
Subscribed after hearing "we're throwing shade at plants." I'm here for this lol, because, I feel like there's a lot of popular and rare plants that I just really am not crazy about.
Had the same issue with my alocasia zebrina, lots of little pest flying everywhere! Awful experience and so hard to take care of, throw this ingrateful BIH* in the trash
A nice spray down on the leaves and top of soil with diluted solution of neem oil ($9 at Lowe's) and dishsoap (just make sure it doesn't contain bleach, dawn will do!) when you purchase the plant should keep the worst at bay, as well as letting the top of the soil dry out (try bottom watering) so the little buggers can't multiply.
Do you think angel wing begonias are called that because they're destined for the afterlife? Now do a video on how to deal with pests... Not me, the buggy kind.
The Fiddle Leaf Fig! It cracks me up that when people are selling high-end property in the States there's always a FLF (or a dozen) in the video/brochure.
For me it would have to be string of hearts, when they grow long they kind of just look dead and stringy and bald on top. They look like they’ve been neglected
I just pin them back onto the top and cut and propagate literally mines been bushy for years and they flower. I don't do much they hang off the balcony door or on window and I just water when it's super dry and light fertilise in summer every now and then I like in the UK. Try it :)
This was hilarious! My fiddle leaf fig has been so good to me. I thank her for her presence and allowing me to share space with her. She’s even given me knew growth! I shall bow at her planter each morning (haha Im just kidding) but seriously just feel thankful because I’ve heard so many stories of how- temperamental they can be.
My husband bought me an opuntia cactus, the red one you mentioned lol. I have such a hard time with just moving it. so many times picking the little things out of my hand... I told my kids its a mean catus that will bite you if you get close so they dont touch it lol.
My mom passed away in December. For her ceremony in January her work sent a massive peace lily for her. Well now we are in May and let me tell you I can let my pothos, bamboo and zz just get to death dry and they sprout new growth but our new peace lily will start to wilt every 3rd day i have to give it a drink of water and keep the lamp on. It's hilarious and my toddlers call it the mr. Grump plant. But it gives me so much love because of my mom that i just laugh and give it the attention it wants.
Philodendron Pink Princess 🙄 Meh. Not a fan. The pink overtones make the green look muddy and I'm not about to get excited about a spot of pink a quarter inch across....
I just can't justify it because of all the genetic degradation from propagating the same plants over and over and the highrisk or reverting that those things have. If the super colorful variegation was a sure thing for the life the the plant it would make a little more sense to me. On a good specimen all those colors can look beautiful and really unique, but considering the high chances of degradation, reverting to all green, or turning all pink and therefore no chlorophyll, it's literally not worth the high price tag. I just don't think most of the people paying this prices understand the problems inherent in that plant. I'll take my chances and wait to see if a better, more stable version can be tissue cultured en masse and get one for cheap or maybe trade for something else in my collection, but I have better, more rare plants to spend my money on!
@@AlbinoAxolotl I agree, I LOVVVEEE the pink but I'm not about to dish out $100 on a plant that may not stay the way I bought it for, especially when all the pink princesses on the market are tiny and low quality
That was exactly my reaction. Honestly my Birkin never let me down. I got it for a few cents, it never outgrew its pot so it's still displayed perfectly and it's standing 16 feet away from the east-facing window, and still growing happily.
As an indoor cactus/succulent gardener, I've killed so many of them. They really are easy but it still takes time to learn how to do it right. Depending on the conditions you have in your house it can be a dance to get everything in balance for them to really thrive and some do better in a given environment than others.
I can relate with the ficus lyrata. I was so excited when I first got one last year. Needless to say the leaves started browning and one by one I saw them dropping. So after trying all ways to keep it alive, I chopped it down and put it outside because I couldn't stand looking at it die a slow death. I put it on my front porch (I live in a warm climate state) and within months the little thing started to revive and it's now about 3ft tall with healthy looking leaves. I still don't pay much attention to it and water it when I remember. I guess it realized the next step would be in the trash and it showed me a thing or two.
LOl, then you don't want to see mine. I just showed one in my Costa Farms collection video and it's nothing more than dead twigs. That plant hates me. Believe me, mine makes his look good!
What do you mean they're meant to be on the rainforest floor and not in my room in northern Canada where there's no sun all winter and it's dry as the desert?
He just try to say… if they keep dying u should think that they tropical plant so if u want them to br thriving u should chance ur room in jungle atmosphere or green house 🤪… is the same like trying to grow tulip , cherry , almond in tropic place u rather choose death 😂😂😂
In Germany, you can currently get Philodendron birkin for as little as 78 cents, which is roughly a american dollar. They're small then, sold in like 1-2 inch pots I believe would be the equivalent, but you can also bigger ones in these standard medium pots for 5€, which is like $6,50. I don't know where it is know elsewhere, bit they where always really cheap here
I was loving this, till you attacked Alocasias! 😢 I'm sitting here, mildly saddened, with my 13 Alocasias/Colocasias, all of them gorgeous! (I do live in India tho- favourable conditions, I guess)
I've killed....I mean, several have died. I bought two more and said it was the last time, and theyre SURVIVING and putting out new leaves. I'm stunned! Sunny window and heavy water in the tub about every 1.5-2 weeks.
I love this video!! It’s HONEST!! I feel the same way about a bunch of these, and I see them all over social media. Kind of wish I knew how fussy a croton can be before I got one. Never again!
It's so interesting how some plants just take to the conditions you provide and give you no troubles whether or not they are hard plants to grow and then others will hate you no matter what you do! I have a watermelon peperomia that has been dying since the day I bought it almost three years ago. No matter what conditions I give it, it'll perk up a little bit and then spiral down again. It's down to two leaves and I have one other healthy least hopefully propagating in water but that has never worked for me before. Maybe I should have thrown it out before now, but I don't like giving up on plants! People say it's so easy to care for and grow and propagate, but I'm doing everything as by the books as I can and it still hates me!
Oh my goodness I am obsessed with Alocasias 😭 when I got my first one, all the leaves died off immediately and then within a week, there were about 10 new little leaves growing in (it was a larger plant)!!! Now this plant is huge and beautiful!!!! I’m obsessed
Ahh, I agree with you on all of these except the alocasia! I live in Texas where it's very humid, so we grow them outside and I didn't even know the scientific name for this plant (I only knew it as elephant ears), but I love the tropical look and feel, and they grow so well outside!
I'm very envious right now, I've killed 2 or 3 polly and then I gave up. In my case they hated my house, they were happy outside but in the fall when I had to put them inside they lost all the leaves and then they started again in spring until they didn't anymore
My gardening friends: Here's some Calathea babies! They're pretty and easy to grow. Me: **killed it in two weeks time and pretended that I've never received it**
Fiddle leaf fig was one of the first I ever bought once I got into plants. I’ve had it for nearly a year. It hasn’t dropped any leaves, but it also hasn’t grown any new ones. NOT ONE. IN A YEAR. Most boring plant in my home. But since it’s not dying I don’t have the heart to get rid of it. Ugh.
nickasarbata yes! I have a dwarf flf, it’s put out one leaf in the last year and that’s about it, it just exists. I wanted one so bad when I got it, now I pretty much ignore it until it’s leaves start to droop
Lol mine only started growing new leaves after sticking it under a grow light. It definitely lost a bunch of leaves when I first started figuring it out but with the grow light, I just have to remember to water and fertilize it out and it does fine
I've had the complete opposite experience with my Ficus Lyrata and I barely give it any attention. Out of all my house plants, it is given the least amount of attention and is completely thriving. I have used the most budget potting mix available, never fertilised it, give it about one or two cups of water a week and it gets a moderate amount of indirect sunlight in the corner of a room away from windows. Yet it keeps growing and putting out lush new leaves. I even left it outside for a month over summer while I was travelling and it survived (got a bit of shock and browning on the edges of a couple of leaves but bounced back very quickly). I absolutely love this plant! By far the easiest non-cactus plant that I've ever looked after.
That was fun :) Totally valid to dislike some plants. I've been calling the Ficus family 'fukkus' with a vengeance. They are everywhere shedding like crazy! I got a benjamin in a surprise box that thusfar behaves better than any I've met before, but I'm watching it. No leaf rain allowed here!
Love the honesty and as a plant lover myself, it took a lot of learning and wasted time, education, money, and energy to figure which plants are NOT WORTH IT. New sub here!
Literally just found out the hard way about the opuntia. I started growing a “spineless one” and let me tell you it HAS spines. Little horrid ones like fiberglass. Ugg. It fell over on my bed and i had invisible spines all over my comforter. Never again.
I just bought one a few days ago. The nursery stuck it on a shelf while I ran to their restroom, but it fell over and broke half a paddle off. So, without thinking, I grabbed the paddle with my bare hands. Hey, I paid for that paddle! And then I paid by picking little needle hairs out of my fingers for the rest of the day.
I got my fiddle leaf fig from ThornandRaised on Etsy. Mine has been super healthy since I got it and zero maintenance! It's even had mites for a few months and it's like "whatever, I'll just grow more and look awesome". It's gorgeous and has tons of new growth to! Don't give up on a beautiful fiddle leaf, plant friends :)
@@nikolaybondarev7407 You should see mine! Mine is honestly really beautiful as well as big and it was one of my very first house plants as well. I've never had a problem with it!
I agree! I cannot believe ppl spend $100's of dollars for plants! I don't get it 🤔 then again 15-20yrs ago most of these "rare" plants were sold for $15-20 but unfortunately with SO many ppl now getting back into gardening because of quarantine,IG hype, etc prices are sky high. Also, I will never purchase a plant I don't truly love and know I can properly care for it by doing a bit of research on. I agree though these types of vids should be mandatory for new plant mom & Dads :)
I just brought a pin stripe Calathea 😬😬 It looks great!! I literally just got it today 🤞🤞🤞 I did know it was going to be a risk so we will see how it goes
Just be patient and check Etsy. I got five of them (about 3-4") for $20 total with free shipping. The prices are getting so cheap especially if you're willing to buy smaller plants! I think they're pretty and I'm happy to have mine, and even happier that I now have a whole pot of them that I paid so little for because I was patient!
Being "of a certain age," I was really surprised when Ficus lyrata suddenly became an "it plant." I always thought of it as a bank lobby plant...big and green but without all that much character. It's a tree that looks wonderful when it's huge, if you're fortunate enough to see it in a tropical habitat, but otherwise...meh. Ficus benjamina may be more common, but it's graceful even as a smaller plant; it's temperamental until it's settled but leaves you lose will grow back. With lyrata, you screw up and you have a butt-ugly plant for a long time. One thing I notice as an outdoor gardener as well, is that there are many plants that I'd definitely grow as part of a tropical garden, but they just don't really impress me as single specimen plants. (Similarly, I can think of plenty of garden plants that work well in conjunction with other plants, but I wouldn't be interested in having them as single specimens.) Yes, Opuntias are evil. Especially O. microdasys. I'm forever putting them back into the back of the displays after people pull them out to look at them. I think the "fish hook" Mamillarias are almost equally horrible tho!
Agreed. I’m sure ficus lyrata is gorgeous in its native habitat but as a house plant it just looks like MS Word clip art of a tree to me. I’ve never really understood the appeal.
I literally just bought a Calathea Ornata the other day. It was sooooo pretty I just had to. Never had one before, so hoping it does well for me. 🤞🏻 I bought a Fiddle Leaf Fig a few weeks ago(never had one of those either), and so far it’s had new growth and looks good. Hearing you talk of $100+ plants makes my jaw drop. I started my plant journey about 4-5 years ago when I found a few Dracaena’s on clearance for $5 and under. I didn’t kill them, so I kept buying more. Aside from propagating what I already have, I still regularly search the clearance section, or buy smaller plants. Just bought 9-10 new plants today🤦🏼♀️ one being the paddle shaped type of cactus. My daughter has a cactus and succulent collection and she is in love with it. I’m new to this channel, but have a request(if you haven’t already done it). Can you do a video on your top 5 house plants?
I repotted my opuntia without gloves because I didn't know better and uh yeah, I was trying to pull out invisible little splinters for days. But damn is it really cute in its new pot...
Wow, that's one of the easiest plants for me. We even had one that was neglected and looked completely brown, dry, and dead, but we figured--why not try watering it? And it came back. We started calling it the Lazareth plant. If it's droopy & you've been watering it, stop watering for a while. If you haven't been watering it, give it a drink & it perks back up within an hour or two. (At least in my experience.) You can check the soil to see if it needs watering by sticking your finger down in the soil 1 or 2 inches. If it's wet, wait. And if it's dry go ahead and water. Make sure it has good drainage. You can also check to see if there are roots growing out of the bottom. If there are, you can either trim the roots (if you like the size & don't want it to get bigger), or you can split the plant & put them into multiple pots, or you can put the whole thing into a bigger pot. They like indirect light. In a window, or by glass doors that get a lot of indirect light has been a good spot. Another thing you can do for them is to wipe the leaves off with a damp cloth to remove dust from the air & pollen (or whatever it is) if it's flowering. Sometimes they are grown in water, but I think they do better in potting soil. (I don't have any experience with other mediums.) Good luck, to you guys!
YES. I had a huge one that was so low maintenance and I loved it until it got too happy and shot up their huge flower things and proceeded to pollinate my entire living room several times. I gifted it lol.
looking at my calathea ornata and sweating very much now :DD p.s. she is such a good girl tho, never acting weird, keeps growing and making me happy also im so shocked by prices you named, "hundreeds of $"! i live in russia and i have like a half of these plants at home, and the highest price i had to pay is like 30$ for ficus lyrata, it's the most expensive one! for example i got monstera obliqua for 7$, calathea for 10$ and so on, we're lucky i guess :DD update: my calathea died last week, you were right lol
maybe it's just an USA thing, I spent 12 euro for a monstera obliqua and between two or three euro for my calatheas, I don't have the ornata though but I think I'll stay away ;)
The one I am most in love with that hates me is the rex Begonia! I can grow multiple Orchid species with no problems and other foliage plants, but the rex Begonias all die immediately except for one I got that grows like a weed. It's the biggest plant challenge I face aside from growing new and more finicky Orchid species. Granted none of the 3 difficult Begonias have died yet. They are like little zombie plant rhizomes that either grow tiny little leaf starts which never do much or they grow a few leaves that quickly mold and fall off to then grow again a few months later.
Nick-this is brilliant! I agreed with literally every plant you shared on this list. I also wanted to recommend to you an alocacia that I think you might like - alocacia black velvet. They like a bit of humidity and to remain moist but the foliage is GORG. and the leaves are quite sturdy and resilient. Nothing like typical alocacia (I’ve killed so many and lost several to spider mites).
I've never seen someone roast plants and I am fully entertained.
Lol!! Me too!
THIS! Lol I am really enjoying this although I feel like he’s holding back lol
One plant snob to another...no canna in my house......I loved this!
You have killed it! Love this post. Although, I live in zone 11b and cannas and alocasias grow beautifully here outside - just keep them moist at all times.
HAHAHAHA
Fiddle leaf fig be like “due to personal reasons I will be passing away”
I don't get it lol. My fiddle leaf is over 10 ft tall and it sits in my Minnesota dining room. I had no idea they were so temperamental because mine had always been so happy.
I've found they do best when you ignore them, mine only gets watered when it's completely dried out (once a month) and it's done very well
This comment made me laugh so much 🤣
@@inni5660 same. i have had a couple and they really take abuse/neglect lololol

The plants are in the other room. I made sure that they didn't hear you. Rated R.

LOL that's too funny.

Me, hating everything about calathea. Me also, calathea being my favorite plant.
Im a totally noob and fell for all the calatheas. Literally 4 of the, stromanthe tristar I have killed twice... now I’m sitting here going. Oh. What have I done?
I also love calathea... I have four
Me too. I just keep trying.
I love the ornatas bc my mum had them, but i killed at least 3. They're one of my favorites but he is so right😂
Same I have the green stripe one and it looks nasty all the time but recently I’ve put a humidifier beside it and it’s doing well now
My fiddle leaf dropped a leaf at the exact same time you said “I hate this plant” 😂 I will never buy another FLF because I absolutely despise how big of drama queens they are
weird , I keep waiting for mine to die because it was one of my first plants and I came to dislike it with time ... but it's been thriving.
But I do love my huge alocasia have it by the dining room window and is so dramatic and gorgeous! Got a smaller one as well which finally grew a healthy leave, many leaves at first came out and they would go limp and die all mushy. But this last one is beautiful! 😍

This is the catty (against plants) content I’ve been needing. “You can just look at this plant and it will drop a leaf”. 😂
I ordered my alocasia odora variegata and once it got to my house, it immediately dropped two big leaves. It also seemingly had no pest issues but OF COURSE it got mealybugs AND spidermites like how dare you
That cracked me up 😂. I have 2 small ficus benjaminas and they do drop leaves

Ahahahaha. He's hilarious and gorgeous haha. "Piss poor attitude" on the 1st calathea 😂
They fucking die."
Basically what I'm saying is that, I hate all plants...but I keep buying them! And try my hardest to keep these little bastards alive!
That is too funny!
😂😂 quit trying. Ignore the needy bastards. They will thrive. Or die. Same outcome, just you aren't exhausted.
Facts. The struggle is real
Your comment gave me life!!!! It’s everything I feel 😂

Fern: dies, and withers away
Devynn Rivers me too, also keeps buying ferns 😞
Mine were dying but then i misted them like craaaazy like twice everyday and kept them in INDIRECT bright light and they stopped yellowing and dying and became so bushy and im so fckin proud gosh
Honestly I can’t get a fern to die 🤷♀️
I’m in Australia so I just walk out the door and they’re everywhere lol
LOL this is so true about ferns omfg
Me : misting my Stromanthe Triostar
Triostar: You ended the misting session with a odd number of sprays so I must die now
🙄😭😭😭
I stuck my dying one in a half-assed terrarium, and it is loving life now. I think it just really needs that extra humidity.
Kim Fletcher thank you 🙏
Yes, my Ornata actually loves me but among my prayer plants, the Stromanthe Triostar is the one that stresses me out the most. I think it has the most beautiful leaves but I can’t keep them pretty.
😂😂😂 this made me laugh too much. Is it weird I heard it in a olde English accent. How extra
My triostar is really laid back, just has the average humidity in my unheated kitchen, I think its actually in cactus compost as it was all I had at the time, it stays on the dry side, with bright indirect light, shielded by begonias
Quite a big fan of the "future garbage" description attributed to Calathea Ornata.
theactionindex they grow from rhizomes you can just cut them back and as they grow back they’ll be more acclimated to your environment but if you don’t have 50% humidity or higher you’ll always have issues on and off
@@amanda1838 Good to know! I'm thinking a good portion of my issue is water (I have city water) so maybe distilled or rain water could be beneficial.
I'm on my second Ornata and I can tell you it's going to the garbage very soon :D
theactionindex yes they need to have distilled or rainwater only.
Same here 😅
Same!!
I have one too. It's been more or less fine so far, but I can tell it's a finicky plant and probably won't hold out for the long haul. Unless you have basically jungle-level humidity in your home, it's probably going to die.
So true 😄
@One Nation Under God my fiddle leaf fig is more than one year old now. when i bought it online, its leaves have black spots underneath. some leaves have brown tips. i left it in the garage with indirect bright light. the leaves fall off one after the other. i did not give up on her. i researched online as to how to care for this kind of indoor plant. at present its doing fine and had several healthy leaves.
Yes! I don’t ever want a Calathea again. Totally agree. PS: this is not a negative video. It’s interesting. And fun to hear.
stockinettestitch Yeah I think Calatheas are a hit or miss type of plant. I’ve had some since the beginning of my journey and 0 problems with them so I love some of them, but when they don’t like it in your house I do imagine they can drive you crazy! 😜 my warscewiczii is one of the loves of my life at the moment lol I just can’t stop looking at it.
Agreed, I bought one upon recommendation and I'm slowly killing it 😓😭 and I have 50+ plants so it pissed me off
Yes, completely agree-- they completely turn me off now! I have an orbifolia but it's a nightmare. I also have a musaica which is definitely an easier one, but I don't appreciate the attitude of calatheas.
It's weird, I got an ornata on a complete whim (it was like $4 and I was okay if it died for that price 😅) and it's doing fine in my house
I run at ~55% humidity in here tho, which is probably saving it lol
Great video. Not negative at all very informative. I've had house plants for over 30 yrs. I have a parlor palm that is over 20 yrs old. I do very well with most house plants but one that hates me is peace lily. No matter what I do I cant keep them alive for more than a week. I've never had any of the plants you mentioned but they look finicky. I cant stand anything that drops leaves they are too messy.
The monsters obliqua looks like it was consumed by worms
I truly believe the draw of that plant is the rarity of it, not the look.
I’ve been laughing about this comment for the past 5 minutes 😂
YES!!!!
Yes! It's an ugly plant to me. I don't even like the adsonaii. And I'd never spend more than $50-$60 on a plant.
Exactly, that's what my mom says......but me crazy about them...
Imagine how many Fiddle leaf figs perished after being bought by so many insta influencers because it looked cute.
“You can just look at that thing and it’ll drop leaves” 🤣😂
Yeah, that remark make me laugh so hard :D :D So true. At the beginning of the winter I dared to move mine Ficus Beniamina approximately 3 meters away from the window (ran out of place by the window) and it dropped 1/2 of it's leaves :D (I can laugh because the spring came and it's going all right now)
I had the same relationship with my last avocado :D
I looked over at my four leaf Ficus benjamina as he said that, haha.
Same! I always think they’re so cute in the store but as soon as I get them home they stretch even if I put them in a south window, I can’t keep them small and cute
air probably too dry
I agree, wasted a lot of money on the succulent fad. If I lived in a hot sunny dry state, I would grow outside, but they don't like being inside.
Tamieka D 😂😂😂 Why do we love those dramatic suicide plants?? We always love what isn’t good for us.
Tamieka D : Best. Comment. Ever.🤣
I love the drama of this comment lol. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who names her plants!
When you said "I hate this plant," it was an automatic follow for me lol. This was so funny and relatable.
I basically abandoned my fiddle leaf outside under an awning and its loving life. It hasn't lost a single leaf and I barely water it. Some plants just love to be forgotten about I swear.
What zone are you?
So true!! I live in Hawaii though..
I absolutely CHOKED when you held up that FLF and said “I hate this plant😐”. 😂 😂 🤣

I was drawn to this vid right away. I always want to know folks likes and dislikes. Good call, was great
I slightly disagree with some of his “opinions” becouse they are based in that he cant keep alive the plant, take the ficus benjamina for example ,he has lost leaves an most surely died, but only becouse its a plant that LOVES direct sunligh, mine is in my balcony(west facing)and it thrives ..its also a plant you should proon ,like roses... so basing an opinion in not being informed of the care ,or triying to make it grow somewhere it shouldnt ,I dont think that gives the right to say its not a good plant .Will still keep watching his videos ,and have learned a lot from him..but many coments on this video, are clearly based on plats he has killed due to not caring for them correctly 😩❤️

Great idea!!
I'm a fan of pothos: all its varieties and the cousin philodendron. Unfortunately, the big box stores where I live don't carry them as much as they should have. They are the best "common" house plants in my book. They are always beautiful and lush.
Ah, good ol' dependable spider plant.

My first plant was a pothos. She hangs in the best window in the house and is called "my queen" when I take care of her. That and my Monstera Adansonii are equals. I'm still getting to know the rest of my plants, but the humble spider is quickly moving into third place.
I'm over anthuriums. There, I said it. Thank you for creating this safe space.

Finally someone out here telling the truth about plants that need too much.
Sylvie Dionne especially for that price tag!
I agree!
Definitely not worth the hype

I managed to kill a cactus. Just by sharing my house with it.
Me too. More than one actually.
Yo cacti being an easy beginner house plant is a fucking lie I tell ya!
Me and Stromanthe Triostar.
As an indoor cactus/succulent gardener, I've killed so many of them. They really are easy but it still takes time to learn how to do it right. Depending on the conditions you have in your house it can be a dance to get everything in balance for them to really thrive and some do better in a given environment than others.
Actually, killing a cactus is not hard😂 just water it three times a week, or literally never, it will die
I literally *GASPED* out loud as the ficus came into frame 😂
Lol it was sooo sad :(
LOl, then you don't want to see mine. I just showed one in my Costa Farms collection video and it's nothing more than dead twigs. That plant hates me. Believe me, mine makes his look good!
Most of these plants are truly meant to be in a rainforest floor but y’all don’t want that conversation 😂
@@Foxy11123 say it with me...SARCASM......
I'm sitting here, mildly saddened, with my 13 Alocasias/Colocasias, all of them gorgeous! (I do live in India tho- favourable conditions, I guess)
Where in India do you live? I am in Delhi and find that the Alocasia Orosa is the only one that works with me.
The others now have one leaf each.
I don’t like crotons. I just find them uninteresting and blah.
Same.
They're like fresh-cut flowers. You bring them home and enjoy them for a day or two, and then they die.
Same! Mine always drop leaves. My partner recently bought one and I refuse to water it. It's "his" plant. It's definitely gonna die.
I've killed....I mean, several have died. I bought two more and said it was the last time, and theyre SURVIVING and putting out new leaves. I'm stunned! Sunny window and heavy water in the tub about every 1.5-2 weeks.
I absolutely DESPISE them!!! They don’t look natural to me, they just look sick 😂
I agree completely ; i have the two bunny ear cactii that you spoke of and i use “physical distancing “ when caring for them 😂
Glovana Jn Baptiste I literally got some quills stuck in my thumb and didn’t know and it became infected 💀
This is very validating because I've killed some of these 😂😆
In any other context this would be weird
When you talked about the ficus lyrata...mine is breaking my heart right now. This plant duped me in the store and has been abusing me ever since.
Right? They always look gorgeous in store. But they’re finicky lil beeshes.
I love this video!! It’s HONEST!! I feel the same way about a bunch of these, and I see them all over social media. Kind of wish I knew how fussy a croton can be before I got one. Never again!
Yah hate crotons
Petra is easy . I’ve forgotten to water it . And it’s wilted but came back . The others I’ll kill
Calatheas are like annuals
Lol
No comment has ever been more true..
"buying future garbage" indeed
FACTS.
Stealing and using the phrase "future garbage" next time I see someone buying unecessary stuff.
...but these plants make great drag names!
Welcome to the stage: Canna Lily!
I really want more of these. Also, it makes me feel really good when you talk about how difficult some plants are and mine are thrivinggg lol
I don’t care about syngonium. They do nothing for me with a couple exceptions. People are usually upset with me about that 😂
I don’t like the colored ones or the juvenile ones. But I do love my large leaf butterfly syngonium, she gives me lots of love ❤️
I love syngonium! They thrive over here in India. Least maintenance required.
Haven't had one yet but I gasp Everytime I see that pink green arrowtype leaf.. 😃
If you got a “piss poor attitude” you aren’t welcome in my indoor jungle.😂😂😂
Ahh, I agree with you on all of these except the alocasia! I live in Texas where it's very humid, so we grow them outside and I didn't even know the scientific name for this plant (I only knew it as elephant ears), but I love the tropical look and feel, and they grow so well outside!
Same! I have jumbo elephant ears in my yard 5 feet tall and I love them. They make my yard look so exotic and are fun to smack and drum on.
I'm very envious right now, I've killed 2 or 3 polly and then I gave up.
In my case they hated my house, they were happy outside but in the fall when I had to put them inside they lost all the leaves and then they started again in spring until they didn't anymore
I just picked up a Birkin the other day, it wasn’t even labeled. $12 for it, in a 3” pot, it’s beautiful, and I love it🤍💚🤍
My gardening friends: Here's some Calathea babies! They're pretty and easy to grow.
Me: **killed it in two weeks time and pretended that I've never received it**
This video was so entertaining. And when you brought out the Fiddle leaf fig I burst out laughing! 🤣 Thank you Nick, you made my day. 💚
I wanted one so bad when I got it, now I pretty much ignore it until it’s leaves start to droop
nickasarbata my Fiddle leaf died so quickly that I thought I had imagined having one.😏
Kathy Macomber LOL! Maybe that’s where they belong: in our memories.
nickasarbata yep( or a bad dream)!
Lol mine only started growing new leaves after sticking it under a grow light. It definitely lost a bunch of leaves when I first started figuring it out but with the grow light, I just have to remember to water and fertilize it out and it does fine
I’m with you on FLF...I don’t have one, never wanted one ... I don’t feel any attraction to the foliage at all. I’m so glad you did this video thanks!
Looks like giant spinach
bubblegummel this is heresy!!
Yes! I’m so glad you called out the obliqua! I got attacked in a plant group for saying I didn’t like it 😂
Love the honesty and as a plant lover myself, it took a lot of learning and wasted time, education, money, and energy to figure which plants are NOT WORTH IT. New sub here!
Literally just found out the hard way about the opuntia. I started growing a “spineless one” and let me tell you it HAS spines. Little horrid ones like fiberglass. Ugg. It fell over on my bed and i had invisible spines all over my comforter. Never again.
lmao
Did you banish it to the outdoors or the trashcan
Monstera adansonii is my favorite plant. It’s beautiful and easy to care for and it grows so fast
Its on my wish list
Im gonna go and point fingers. It's all Kaylee Ellen's fault
🤣
That’s funny 😆 She knows her plants tho 🌱
@@tonyaglover3971 but we love her
😂
the fucking tea
I agree on the ficus. Ugly ugly ugly. Looks like a giant vegetable.
Even vegetables are prettier than ficus lyrata
I hate it too such a diva!
@@nikolaybondarev7407 You should see mine! Mine is honestly really beautiful as well as big and it was one of my very first house plants as well. I've never had a problem with it!
Serve that truth up. 🙌🏻 this should be mandatory for all beginners to watch.
I agree though these types of vids should be mandatory for new plant mom & Dads :)
one of the most enjoyable 14min 57sec i've had in a while while learning about plants that suck. Nice job Nick.
You said “You can just just look at it and it will drop leaves” Haha hahah I’m dying
I just brought a pin stripe Calathea 😬😬 It looks great!! I literally just got it today 🤞🤞🤞 I did know it was going to be a risk so we will see how it goes
I agree with you on many of these, but I must confess I want a birkin.
I found one at my local kroger a few months ago. And it was not expensive!
Birkins are lovely! I agree with the other comments saying to wait for a good deal, then snap one up! :)
I found a bunch at my local greenhouse for $4.99. I personally wasn’t excited by them but check your local greenhouses!
Me too! 😄 I'm in Canada and my local greenhouse is selling them at $45 for a 6 inch pot... Hopefully they will go down even more than that!
(Similarly, I can think of plenty of garden plants that work well in conjunction with other plants, but I wouldn't be interested in having them as single specimens.)
Yes, Opuntias are evil.
I bought a Fiddle Leaf Fig a few weeks ago(never had one of those either), and so far it’s had new growth and looks good.
Yeeees! Totally agree about the obliqua. It's an adansonii wearing a fancy hat at the end of the day 🙈
I hateeeeeee my peace lily. Home girl has brought me NOTHING but problems.
Honestly same like it’s just really droopy and idk what I can do to fix itttt
(I don't have any experience with other mediums.)
Good luck, to you guys!
SAME
YES. I had a huge one that was so low maintenance and I loved it until it got too happy and shot up their huge flower things and proceeded to pollinate my entire living room several times. I gifted it lol.
Same! The leaves keep twisting on themselves and get yellow and black edges.. I hate that plant!!
looking at my calathea ornata and sweating very much now :DD
p.s. she is such a good girl tho, never acting weird, keeps growing and making me happy
also im so shocked by prices you named, "hundreeds of $"! i live in russia and i have like a half of these plants at home, and the highest price i had to pay is like 30$ for ficus lyrata, it's the most expensive one! for example i got monstera obliqua for 7$, calathea for 10$ and so on, we're lucky i guess :DD
update: my calathea died last week, you were right lol
Guess I'm moving to Russia now lmao
maybe it's just an USA thing, I spent 12 euro for a monstera obliqua and between two or three euro for my calatheas, I don't have the ornata though but I think I'll stay away ;)
Welcome to the expensive, capitalist world of the United States! Haha
Hahha. Ur update is so relatable. 😅😅
