Obtusifolia grows WONDERFULLY for me in terracotta and I bottom water it once a week or when it is BONE DRY. I hope you can get it to survive! It is one of my favs 😍 you rock!
The variegated ivy are a nightmare, but the plain green are very easy. I purchased mine (green ivy) during the Winter, and it has been in active growth for over a year, and has doubled in size. It's kept in a low to medium light room, with a Northern facing window, so the light is very consistent (but never direct) all day. I filter the water when possible, and only water once a week when the top of the soil feels dry. After pruning, I add the old leaves to the soil. I've never had any pest problems with any of my plants. There's occasionally some fungus gnats, which are perfectly fine with me. I also dont put my plants outdoors, which may be why a lot of people have trouble with pests, but I also have one of those plug-in sonic things to repel bugs as well. OH! They like acidic soil. I add a little apple cider vinegar to their water on occasion, or add some diluted coffee as part of the fertilizing schedule.
i brought my mother's dracaena marginata back from the dead. Fusarium rot got it right down the middle of the stem, well I chopped the fusarium part off and plastic bag cuttinged it. It took a few months. plants i've killed... LOTS of ferns, little baby teeny weenie coffee trees (i have a big one thats a few years old), basil out of season is a frequent epic fail but tulsi basil seems to last a lot longer, rex begonias come winter tend to just WITHER, and then there's the purple passion I forgot about that just... croaked, in a big east facing window. i killed plenty of cacti and succulents, although my opiunta seems to be really taking off albeit leaning.
I know! I feel like such a failure when a plant dies even though I know that my apartment’s environment is likely unsuitable for that type of plant. I don’t have the time to recreate an Amazonian jungle 🤷🏻♀️

Calatheas are my new passion watch it Buster go get a humidifier stop being so basic jk seriously though they are some that just LIVE bro you went for the fancy ones first didn't you
I have killed three different Calatheas last year. I have not gotten a humidifier, hoping I can give them another go now that I've got a new strategy. Next up will be grow lights x) I can give up on the needy drama queens haha

OMG same here! I live in Portugal too where it is very warm and humid and they do LOVE it here! I was so scared at the start because everyone seemed to kill them but I couldn't resist but they have done so well for me! I had a suspicion it is the Portuguese climate that they seem to love so much and not my "amazing" (note the sarcasm) plant skills! I now have the proof! :p
Same goes for me. I'm in singapore -- my calatheas are thriving well. I guess they like tropical climates. I put mine beside humidifiers and they seem to like it even if its humid here.
it really depends on the environment, my Stromanthe sanguinea “Triostar” is doing great, I even had to move it away from the grow light. I'm growing all these "hard" plants easily and at the same time I've almost killed a Christmas cactus... so really, pick plants for your environment, not what others say is easy to grow.
Most of these plants are tropical and you have to replicate their seasons in the wild. Most people can’t do that when you grow them as houseplants. Study a plant you want before investing in it.
I'm so happy you addressed English Ivy. I've had two of them and they were infested with pests almost immediately after I bought them and died a very quick death.
I feel I cant even look at Calathea. If I ignore them they thrive but as soon as I pay them any attention they just throw their toys out of the pram. I'm currently in the midst of a complicated relationship with 3 peace lily's. I split my huge, beautiful plant into 6. The original and 2 others of doing fantastic, but the others are driving me insane. Too much light, not enough light, not enough water, too much water, pots too big, pots too small. It's starting to feel personal 😂

I've also killed a Rex. The most beautiful thing pinkly purply gorgeous shaped thing I ever saw in the shop. Took it home, and it said, "'Fraid not!" A friend gave me an Angel Wing clipping. Stuck it in soil immediately (no rooting) and now it's huge.
My nickname is “plant killer” I go into my favorite nursery and the clerk asks me what did I kill this time, I will never try growing succulents again. I have killed several varieties of succulents more than three times. So no more for them. I am so bad I cannot keep an air plant alive.
@@paulineoriley7049 dont forget, underwatering kills too. Takes awhile longer but it’s still possible. I had an echeveria in a pot without a drainage hole and I was so concerned I was going to overwater it that I almost never watered it. Which caused it to drink what little water was left in its leaves, shrivel up, and die.
Strangely enough I seem to do really well with all calatheas (can't say the same for certain other plants!). My white fusion which I've had for ages, grows on a table in an east facing window. It get s small amount of very early morning weak direct sun but it is shaded from a lot of light by the leaves of a dragon plant. Mainly it's growing a like an understorey plant with dappled light between the leaves of the dragon plant early morning and just average indirect light the rest of the day. I find they don't need as much light as people think despite the white on them. They definitely do not like tap water. I water most of my plants with plain tap water but I make an effort with the calatheas and only use rain or distilled water on them and it's definitely paid off. as for the pink one (I know you mentioned it but the name escapes me at present - the rosie one!), if it's getting too much light, the colour fades so like the white fusion it's protected from direct light by growing under other plants. My white fusion and rosie are also directly under the humidifer and seems to love having slightly damp leaves all time. Again, using rain or distilled water really makes a huge difference. all my calatheas are fed with a half strength organic liquid feed called Charlie Carp in the growing season and they seem to love that as well. As for the ivy, well i wouldn't even go there. It's just a complete pest magnet and it's just not worth the headaches it gives. I'm glad you are conscientious as to what you recommend to customers when it comes to growing the more difficult plants. I wish more places would do it. I was in a nursery the other day and listened as a lady asked a staff member for recommendation for a beginner. the staff member tried to sell her calatheas. When the staff member left I went over to lady and told her not to buy them if she is just starting out with plants as they can be very difficult. I recommended some much easier care plants there for a beginner such as a zz and devils ivy and she was very grateful.
Tasgardener My Calatheas are very happy as well. I water them straight from a tap :) I suppose it depends on where you live and the quality of your water.

I was scared too but mine is really happy with new growth 4 months later. So rewarding! I give it medium light not too much the leaves can dry, I use cheap spring water and lots of humidity. I now keep mine in the bathroom and it loves it.
Patrick Gallagher wherever you’re don’t want it to grow 😂😂 I’ve had three separate plants indoors and killed all three within a week, it just hates me 😫
If the ivy is crispy it’s a sure sign of spider mites. Crispy means they’ve taken complete control and it’s too late. The secret is to shower them every month or so and if you notice little fine webs on the leaves, shower them weekly. After about three times in the shower, the mites will be gone and the plant will bounce back unless it was already too late. Monthly is good for preventative and maintenance. This is also the case for any other plants with mites or to prevent them. I put them in the shower and drench them and leave them there for several hours afterward. If you literally shower with them, the shampoo and soap you use cleans the plants nicely and kills the mites effectively. It is safe for the plants.
In my experience Dracaena thrive on neglect more than any other plant I know. I hardly water them at all - probably like a zz actually. I don’t find them fussy with light either, keep them very root bound.
Glad someone mentioned this! I feel like my dracaena compacta and fragrans just like to be neglected. Never had any issues with my ivy plants either. The others I have trouble with. I don’t mess with Calatheas
My peace lily was doing well for almost a year, it grew twice the size of when I bought it. But as soon as I started using unfiltered water, it crisped up quickly and went downhill, I couldn't save it!! 😫 The only plants I've kept alive long-term so far are snake plants, pothos, and aglaeonemas.
My peace lily is pretty finicky sometimes but I've finally mastered what she wants! I was definitely underwatering her at first, but she lovesss being soaked once a week and being rotated once a week by my east-facing window. I love how clear their language is, it definitely makes it easier to care for. I personally don't mind when she doesn't produce any flowers, I think the foliage itself is absolutely gorgeous. I've learned that my peace lily likes to be completely left alone with as little change as possible (aside from the weekly rotation) and she'll let me know whenever she needs something
OK I just literally commented asking how to care for one, but I will take your advice. Mine has a bloom coming. So slow on the way but whatever! I feel I didn't earn it since I bought it like that...
I simmered mine outdoors. In the fall I brought it in & plopped it in a windowless bathroom, basically ignore it. It is now throwing out 3 new leaves! LoL go figure.
YES - I've had the same experience. My Peace Lily is the prima donna of the bunch! She would go droopy without warning and I couldn't figure out what she wanted. I was using distilled water and probably not enough. Once I started rotating her in the window and using the water meter I realized she wanted more water. She is not flowering right now but like you I'm more than okay with that.
@@mairwaugus5203 get out! Wow. I have a tiny window in the bathroom and I've only dared to place a small plant in there. I might move the Lily to see if I have your success
All Pothos and spider plants hate me! 🙄 Everyone seems to be able to just place them somewhere and splash a bit of water on them. And they THRIVE! I read, I blend soils, I care..... Even talk to them "please don't die!" But no.... They just give me a evil grin and die. Oh, that goes for Adansonii too.
About My English Ivy .... 3rd try was a charm: *Hanging in a SW window. *Light on top of the Plant (Not just the trails) *Distilled water *Tip....Shower with them...(not Shower water in the soil)... But grabbing the Humidity from the Shower... P.S. Learned So much from U... Also.. I doesn't hurt to live in California 🌿💚
I've had an English ivy for a year now, and I've thankfully never seen pests on it. I make sure to shower it most of the time when it's time to water since I've heard they're likely to attract pests. And when ive receptly shoped for ivy, I heavily inspected the leaves, stem and soil before deciding to purchase them. And sprayed them with neem oil /castile soap/ water mixture and wiped them down and am isolating them from my other plants for a little while. Hopefully these new ones i have don't surprise me with any pests one day.
I've struggled with calathea, ripple peperomia varieties, and spaths as well. I'm learning they need more light and less water, because they're such a dense foliage plant, the light doesn't make it to the soil and help dry it up. So it weakens them, invites pests and bacteria and they're not long for this world. I haven't outright killed any yet, but did bring several back, that were close to the end. When they die back, they're less dense in foliage and get the right balance of light and moisture. Another interesting development which happened on my plant journey recently, is the return of rain in summer. We've had drought the past 2 years. Summer is normally when advice recommends, increasing watering - because it's warmer. However, because of the rain and high humidity (we were at 100% recently) I had to water sparsely, like in winter. The plants just didn't need extra moisture in a high humidity situation. Even though there was plenty of heat! Calatheas and spaths can handle more moisture, than the peperomia's (especially obtusifolia). Although I nearly lost a couple of peperomias, which didn't actually have anything to do with how I was treating them. It was the nursery I got them from. They left them in their little jiffy-pots, planted inside the plastic pot. Unbeknownst to me, the jiffy-pot was drying out the soil around the roots, because it wasn't rotting down. Why would it, because I was sparsely watering my peperomias. The soil around the jiffy pot, was moist (where I was feeling for wetness) but the invisible jiffy pot was making the soil around the plants roots hydrophobic. As soon as I re-potted them, and saw what the dry jiffy-pot was doing to the roots, they've rebounded back to health! So sometimes, it's not always "us". I've rescued 3 small plants, that were being starved of moisture by their Jiffy-pot cage. Even if you don't re-pot straight away, it's still a good idea to pull your plant out and check it's roots.
@Chris, Thanks for the insight re: Jiffy pots! I suppose sometimes when the plants are being potted up for nursery, [they] are in too much of a hurry or don't realize the Jiffy pots should be broken up a bit before potting up the plant__that would help them break down in the soil through time and watering. 😳 🌱🌿🙌🙌🙌😺

That is helpful, thank you Laina! 💕 Exactly what I was doing and my 3 week old plant looked really happy, then I went on a trip for a few days and left my husband explicit instructions, which I’m sure he followed, except I forgot to tell him to open the curtain! Got back home and saw a few small droopy leaves and a gnat or 2 and thought it was root rot, only to take it out, clean off the soil and repot w better aeration per recommendation of another UA-camr, and the roots were fine. But now my gorgeous delicious peppermint candy plant has droopy, sad leaves all over and needs a stick to help hold it up. 🙃😭😭😭
When you said “Calathea Medallion” I looked up to my shelf to my very sad and struggling one. I will probably wait to try again until I have a house with a room where I can keep the humidity at 50%🌟 it’s too dry here in Canada
Piper Caravaggio I have Calathea medallion for many years and it’s doing really well. It’s rather large, and it’s bringing up leaves that start to layer at this point (23), as there is no space for them on the perimeter. 1. It doesn’t like to stay dry or wet :))) I water it once in 7-10 days in summer, about once in 2 weeks in winter. I do check the soil before watering. 2. I keep mine in a heavy ceramic pot about 6 feet from an east facing window. 3. I keep a spray bottle nearby to mist the top of the soil once in a while. We have dry summers and fall, our winters are wet, but then it’s heated air, which is dry again. 3. I Fertilize it once a month with Dyna-Gro. Good luck!
The peperomia obstufolia, I hardly water mine, and west facing window 3 feet in a terra cotta pot. Doing awesome, hope I don't jinx myself, lol, love your info!!!🤗🌱🌾🍃
It sounds like from what you’re describing is maybe you water more on the wet side? I know you also struggle with fiddle leaf. But definitely more light and more dried out between watering. Perhaps bottom watering could help too. I consciously limit my plant numbers so I can provide the care they need to thrive. I think if I had 300 plus more plants they would be dying left right and centre so good on you haha. Also when plants are stressing they are also more pest prone. I have a hedera that is doing amazingly so far, but we will see! It’s interesting to see what people are struggling with.
This makes me feel so much better as a new plant owner😭 I felt like I didn’t have a green thumb because I was killing my plants at first but I’m getting the hang of it. Thanks for this video.

My mother's Dracaena Marginata is standing in the darkest corner of a living room, it was over watered (literally standing in water for few days) and surprisingly it's growing very fast. :O
Same here! I had a Peperomia caperata for about 7 months, untill one day she decided "I'm done, goodbye, I'm dead now". It just desintegrated in about 1 week to 10 days.
Peperomias dont need a lot of water. I water mine when their leaves get slightly droopy and soft. And they do not like bright direct sun. I keep mine in eastern window and they are looking amazing
@@97ana Yes! My rugoso tells me when it needs water because it drops a leave and gets very soft. I water it and next day it's standing up all plump! I think overwatering is killing people's plants :)
Me tooo. Mine was doing really well for almost a year, so I just continued doing what I was doing since it was working...Out of nowhere I started losing leaves. I'm at 70% of its leaves lost and yet it still has leaves growing, which get to a dime size and fall off. I've lessen the water intake, repotted in fresh soil and put her in a terracotta pot to help with absorbing water( was thinking this was side effects of overwatering) . Fingers crossed this will work.

In the beginning, I've struggled with Stromanthe thalia and Goeppertia [ex-Calathea] roseopicta (Medallion, Dottie and Rosy), but after I've changed from using tap to rain water, or filtered/de-chlorined water, boom! It was like magic. No more brown/burnt edges. But, maybe a big but, I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, and maybe they feel at home here, with our warm and super humid weather (70 to 80% is normal. It feels dry when it's around 60%, because we're used to high humidity). My Goeppertia roseopicta Medallion even bloomed by the end of last fall.
Kristie Bihm I’ve killed one, 2 are currently on life support and I thought hey let me give it one more go so I bought 2 more. Why do I buy more you ask? It’s so I can mask the fact that I’m a serial plant killer, I just causally get rid of the dead ones and replace them with my new victims.

as a plant killer also, the only aloe that died on me was when I had a very mouldy apartment (so many worse effects than my aloe dying!!). in my experience, aloes needs lots of sun, don't need humidity and barely water - like when they get bone dry only!! mine have loved being neglected on balconies or in window boxes.
I have a hard time keeping plants that need high humidity like prayer plants or ferns. Also, succulents with very thick juicy leaves. I must over water them. And NO more orchids! I'm figuring out that I do best with plants that thrive with a little benign neglect. I've just realized that some of my recent failures were partly the fault of the seller. There are way too many plants being sold lately that are barely rooted cuttings. I bought two ripple jades in the last year, and both times, they just withered up in the first few weeks. I blamed myself, but after realizing what was going on with plants in the box stores, I tried again with a slightly larger, more established plant, and it's doing great.
Honestly, I can't keep succulents alive. Just not enough light. But my pathos, Dracaena, and zz Plant are doing amazing. But I know my limits. I have had my white fusion for about 6 months now, and it LOVES me. I keep it in my bathroom. I have NOT tried to repot it yet, though, so we'll see if it throws a fit when I can't put it off any more.
About peace lilies. I too heard 'oh when they wilt, you need to water them' or 'you need to let them go a little dry'. Well, I've only ever had one peace lily and I bought it many years ago. It did look a little... not so good to begin with, but now it's started putting out bigger leaves and sometimes bigger flowers and I'm so proud of it! My best tips is; water before you think you need to. Water when the leaves first start drooping just a tiny bit. The moment it's not looking 100% perky, I water it. This plant is THIRSTY (and I may have repotted it into too draining soil haha)! I noticed that if I let the foliage droop until they hang sadly, I would always lose leaves, and it would take a while to perk back up. It is true they let you know when to water... but it's a lot sooner than you'd think :P As for my failures... ah the Peperomia Rotundifolia just... didn't like me. At all. If I let it dry, it went crisp, if I watered it, it became mush. That's usually the same fate my succulents can look forward to, I really seem to do badly with those haha
Dracena was my first houseplant, I’ve bought it over two years ago and managed to severely neglect if over the time. I’ve repotted and started taking a proper care of it only some time ago as plants and gardening are a recent hobby of mine and somewhat she seems to thrive. My mom wanted to throw it out every time she visited me because it looked so bad and I’m myself surprised that it managed to survive as I’ve killed two other dracenas after I got my first one and before I’ve learnt how to take care of them. It’s still bouncing back from its bad state but it started putting out a ton of new growth so I hope it’ll be happy from now on

Dracaena marginata has been super easy for me. I’ve even kept it medium light, I did have a few leavesdrop in the winter months but not enough to effect the health of the plant. Honestly been one of the easiest plants in my care.
This makes me feel better. I have killed all three calatheas I’ve owned, two of which were the first plants I ever bought not realizing how challenging they are. I only have one peperomia now as my others would be doing great but then would switch overnight to not liking their home. 😩 same with begonias... I tend to stick to unique philodendrons and scindapsus now due to their heartiness but there are also some great variations out there now. 😊

Well, I have three of the plants on this list. Peperomia Obtusifolia, calathea medallion, Peace lily. The obtusifolia had a wicked case o scale. I stood and wiped it down with alcohol multiple times. Seems to have worked. The was my first intro to scale. Ugh. The medallion is in my bathroom with a rattlesnake plant and a crocodile fern. I’ve had it for several months and it is still putting out new leaves. I use filtered water but it still has brown leaves tips. I’m keeping my fingers crossed because every time I walk into my bathroom I want to hug this plant I love it so much. The peace lily was inherited from a friend. She has no light in her office so now it lives in mine. I’ve had it a couple of months. It’s still ok. I’m encouraged to hear that even experts like you, Nick, face the same problems as those of us who are new to this plant parenting world. Check back in a few months. Hope mine three high-maintenance plants are still going.
I feel for you. I would say I’m very good at taking care of Calathea plants but a Calathea Medallion is so hard to keep alive during the winter season. They go dormant on me. Such a bummer as they thrive in the growing season. Also, Ivy is one of the plants that I can’t keep all that well however I discovered the more I ignore my ivy plants, the better they grow. This video is fun to watch. It’s interesting to know what type of plant’s plant tubers are struggling with.. xo
Omg, you're listing almost every plant that I have and adore the most (while at same time you got a really impressive plant collection). My Pepperomia obtusifolia is at my south window and I think it as one of my succulents because leaves seem so though. Hasn't crown a lot but doesn't seem like it's struggling either. Maranta's can be really needy so I fully empathize with people that have given up on them. My Leuconeura has been pretty temperamental lately but is still also having a new growth. Haven't yet tried a medallion but would love to and have been looking for a right Princess Jessie... Should I be scared? Now I'm also curious what Calatheas have done well for you (others than musaica)? Ivy has been doing pretty well even tho it would probably like to have little bit more water at times.
I’m surprised that Dracaena is on the list! I’ve had one for a LONG time. I killed 1 before from over watering; woke up one day and all the leaves were on the floor. But after that, I only water it when completely dry and I always use an all purpose fertilizer
I agree. Sometimes I think some of these vloggers, others that I watch, show an unrealistic standard....that most people can't attain. We (me specfically..lol) do everything that is told and read about in care, but no matter what, many plants die....even the so called "easy..fool proof" plants.
I’m glad you have been truthful enough to admit it by being a you tuber. I subscribed to you because you have been truthful. I’ve killed several and like you say once I’ve had one die I try to find out what I did wrong and then try to be more attentive to their needs..
Thank you for making this video it really made me feel better! I've stopped bringing ferns into my home because they always die from the lack of humidity. I feel better knowing losing plants is part of the hobby :)
My maidenhairs are in terracotta pots inside a water filled decorative pot. Keep the outer pot filled half way up the terracotta with water, then largely just leave them alone. They don’t give me any problems.
I really appreciate that you have made thus video coz it just goes on to show that you are as human n prone to make mistakes with plants...many people just make videos of plants that have thrived in their care n it just goes on to build a certain public image...this video only goes on to make me relate to you... kudos !!
I laughed out loud as soon as you said Draceana Marginata - I'm in the process of slowly killing one. I laughed even harder when you said you'll def find one in IKEA, because that's where i got mine :p I definitely overwatered it but i think i might be able to save the main trunk!
@Madison Brewer, I bought 2 small and 1 med. at Ikea, as well. I've never been able to keep Dracenas growing for long, but I realized I was watering them too much. So, NOW, whenever I bring home new plant babies I keep them in their original pot and away from all other plants for awhile, until I see they don't have little creatures that may infect plants I've already had. The trick with Dracenas, I've discovered, is water them through then, let them get more dried out between waterings__and mine (from Ikea)are in a low light area, on top of my microwave, in kitchen. I am planning on repotting them soon__but first, I will move them to another room to acclimate them to a new area then, I will plant them all together in the same pot. 😎🌱🌿🙌🙌🙌😺 PS__I've realized another 'trick' you can use to help your plants: plants that like their feet wet do better in plastic or ceramic/porcelain (glazed) pots, while plants that prefer drier soil do much better in unglazed, clay pots__just be sure the saucer under the pot is glazed on the inside to protect the surface (table/shelf, or what have you) from being water damaged! 👌 Good Luck with your Dracena. 🌱🌿🙌🙌🙌😺
One of my first plants was a giant peace lily... I have put this plant through so much. I could not keep it happy until I put it under a grow light right next to a southwest facing window. Also I put it in a compact pot. Since then I’ve had more success. It’s still kind of a drama queen but it’s popping out much better leaves and has fluffed back up. I really think it loves light.. as in not as low light as it’s marketed. (Medium to bright indirect or supplemented) We shall see. This all works in progress, after all. Thank for the video. You have become a player in my plant journey. Cheers!!
Thank you for helping me realize this is a trial and error effect. I 've started growing my house plants about 3yrs ago and have lost quit a few over the years.
Damn, I’ve found my white fusion extremely easy to care for, I treat it just like all of my other calatheas. But I’ve always found them to be easy. When I first started my collection I actually bought a calathea rufibarba not knowing what it was or their reputation. I personally think people smother mother them and that’s the downfall. 🤷♀️
I am so with you on the fusion, and triostar. They are/were a struggle. I absolutely love the triostar and it is on the struggle bus in my bathroom. I have heard horror stories about the bugs and ivy so for that reason I don't even bother. I am on my third SOP so if I kill this one, I am done with it. This video absolutely made me feel less of a failure and I feel much better about just saying "no thank you" to some plants! Love your videos Nick!! Keep up the great content!!
Really love your videos! I've been binge watching plant videos and your channel has more realistic topics! Not just a bunch of bragging about their plants and how are their green thumb is. Thanks and I've learned so much from your videos so far! Subscribed!
I have a dracaena (that exact one from IKEA haha). When we got a cat I needed to put it somewhere he wouldn't get to it (he loves plants that have long thin leafs and dracaena is very toxic). I had to put it above the toilet. We don't have windows there. But it's thriving. I'm still confused how.
I’m obsessed with ivy! I keep mine in a north window (USA, ny) and mist daily. They grow like crazy! I get one or 2 new leaves a week on each vine. The misting does help keep the spider mites away. Also it gives me the chance to check them over. I’ve only ever lost one to spider mites. That won’t stop me though.
My calathea medallion and triostar are doing fine, but my white fusion is absolutely committing plant suicide! Its in a humid, warm environment and gets watered with rain water but still is not happy 😭
Love the thumbnail. Thanks for sharing your plant deaths. I have heeded the advice of others and resisted the white fusion. I'm all good with caparatas, but the Eden Rosso just hates me (yet I love it!).
I love that you have the same challenges as we do! My prayer plant died a long sad death and yet my stromanthe triostar is spectacular...maybe the radiation falling on it from the tv is a good thing? Thanks for the laughs! 🇨🇦
Hey Nick, thanks for sharing your experience, I killed a lot of Ferns and Begonia's and I'm forgetting one type of plant too Lol. They are so pretty but like you said I will just appreciate them from afar Lol.
My first-ever plant was a peperomia obtusifola and I straight-up ignored it for about a year. (I was a bad plant owner.) Potted in organic, regular potting soil, getting mostly indirect light, and watered probably once a month. The thing is still trucking along, putting out new leaves, and I am so impressed with it haha
I'm feeling a lot better now that you have confessed to your own struggles! Plants I kill: Chinese Evergreen, dieffenbachias, sago palm. Then there are the one-offs that I have for years and then suddenly you turn around one day and it's dying and cannot be saved. Just had that happen with an abutilon. No idea what went wrong, but its demise came on very quick, and within three days I was having the memorial service for it.
Idk how my mom did that but she had the Triostar for quite some time now. This plant is so marvellous and is growing so fast ! I think we live in a good spot here in eastern France because humidity level is the worst (best for calatheas ?) but light might be the reason why the plant grow well: no direct sun, south-west window. In winter we wait until the plant is a bit thirsty before watering it but in summer I just kind of "remember" when to water it or not. I saw a lot of videos where people were struggling with this plant but in my house it's the easy one. Don't give up on yours !
Same here. My peace lily and English ivy are among my least fussy plants. Wish I could give people advice, but I do next to nothing for mine. And I don't live in an ideal climate for either.
Me to my ivy is probably the easiest plant I have and put it outside during summer and they are about 6ft . My peace lily is also easy and is flowering and thriving beautifully! All I do to get them to flower is stuck banana peels in soil and with it a week I start getting flowers everywhere!

Calatheas and Ctenanthe are by far my favourite plant species. I have found success growing them in Leca and using only rain water, that makes the world of difference, Peace Lilies will thank you if you grow them in Leca, what a difference! White Fusions will grow amazingly in a cloche, they require copious amounts of humidity and live happily inside a cloche, you will barely need to water them in this situation; prior to doing this they just wouldn't last the distance. Hope this helps, give it a shot, Nick...you will be amazed but you do have to use rain, distilled or filtered water. I enjoy your videos!
OMG. I feel so relieved after watching this video. I thought I wasn't a great planty because I killed calatheas, a whole bunch of peperomia, hedera helix, and dracena marginata. And yes, my peace lily looks so stumpy now. Thanks for informing us about peace lilies being pumped with gibberellic acid. Usually, when one plant dies, I wouldn't try growing the same plant again, except for a few like peperomia prostrata. You always produce great content, Nick!
Visited my Home Depot yesterday hoping to find some new stock. Most of the plants look wind burnt, most in bad shape but no reduction in price for them. The best looking were the Peace Lilies, huge things with flowers the size/length of my forearm! Plant itself was at least four feet tall, like on steroids.
Echeveria were basically designed to live in hell. The worst part of the Texas summer, I have mine outside and it just flourishes. It gets a little bit of shade from a tree that's in the middle of the yard, but it's getting hit by that hot, hot sun most of the day and it just loves it, putting out babies and flowers all the time.
I've got 2 echeverias in a north facing window (they get 3 hours of sun max) in the UK and I can't kill them! I water them once a month and even less in the winter and they are loving life haha, one has even given me flowers
Yesterday I took out my very tall palm which I have been growing for 15 years to treat against pests, I dropped him and broke him in half...That was a sad ending of a long friendship...luckily I still have my rather tall Dracena Marginata which I actually consider the easiest plant I have. I even have 3 stems rooting in water! I guess plants are like people - either we have chemistry with them or we don't :-)
They are. I watered mine once every month when I was heavily pregnant and it's the biggest plant I own. I think it's happier when you hardly pay it any heed.
I've grown plants for about 30 years I have always been very lucky I've also mostly mixed my own soil mixtures for different plant requirements A few months ago I decided to buy an expenaive quality soil mixture( I got a bit lazy)..so I went mad and repotted about 20 of my semi favourites ( I have over 300) and all of a sudden have just experienced a bad case of root rot for the first time ever OMG to say I was devastated is an understatement ...I love your honesty and advice and found this video very refreshing and reassuring its a journey of learning no matter how long you have had plants in your life. .
Thanks for sharing this, I just killed my roses, and I'm so heartbroken but to know all the plant influencers has killed some of their plants, make me feel comforted. I won't give up on my dying plants tho, I'll do my best to make it flourish again !
Thank you all so much for your comments, I am absolutely floored by the response!! There are admittedly far too many for me to reply to each one, but I just want to assure you all I am reading each and every one and seriously appreciating your feedback. Thank you! 💕
Obtusifolia grows WONDERFULLY for me in terracotta and I bottom water it once a week or when it is BONE DRY. I hope you can get it to survive! It is one of my favs 😍 you rock!
Lol I agree with you on literally every SINGLE plant
these all hate me too
The variegated ivy are a nightmare, but the plain green are very easy.
I can grow English ivy just fine in my kitchen
PLEASE continue with this topic! It's interesting and something we can all relate to and no one else is doing this topic. MORE!!

Calathea you need a specific climate, I live in Portugal it's warm and humid and all of my babies are flourishing
@@stardoll1995 same girl, same. But for me the mystery is begonias seem to do well here but and I am a serial killer of that species
That’s it I’m moving across the planet to Portugal.
Same goes for me. I'm in singapore -- my calatheas are thriving well. I guess they like tropical climates. I put mine beside humidifiers and they seem to like it even if its humid here.
I live in california, average humidity, but in a bright apartment and my calathea compact star loves it here too!
it really depends on the environment, my Stromanthe sanguinea “Triostar” is doing great, I even had to move it away from the grow light. I'm growing all these "hard" plants easily and at the same time I've almost killed a Christmas cactus... so really, pick plants for your environment, not what others say is easy to grow.
yes!! this!! calatheas are so drama-free where I live but my christmas cactus died on me 1 month after getting it
Calathea Medallions seem to take one look at me and drop dead.
Mine is doing ok. The only thing I do is ignore it lol.
Same!
It seems like no one can grow those every time I buy one I have it for a few months maybe a year and then it just randomly starts dying😂
Most of these plants are tropical and you have to replicate their seasons in the wild. Most people can’t do that when you grow them as houseplants. Study a plant you want before investing in it.
Lara Loves SAME!!!
I'm so happy you addressed English Ivy. I've had two of them and they were infested with pests almost immediately after I bought them and died a very quick death.
Tracy I’m surprised if I see one without bugs, I think they’re born with spider mites lol
@@StinkyDustyBird So true!!! LOL
Same for me, but as soon as i found spider mites i sprayed them. Now my Ivy is thriving, of course i check it once in a while to see if she is ok
I've "three strike ruled" the Begonia Rex. They've withered away every time. ...but my Angel Wing varieties are THRIVING!
The cane begonias are indeed way easier than Begonia rex.
I’ve killed some begonia Rex for sure but I do have a few that are thriving. The trick seems to be not over watering. Picky, they are, but gorgeous.

So GLAD to see I'm not the only begonia rex genocide.

B Williams I killed multiple air plants 🤣
I have also given up succulents. I love them to death. Literally.
How can you kill a succulent?? You're prob watering way too much
@@paulineoriley7049 dont forget, underwatering kills too. Takes awhile longer but it’s still possible. I had an echeveria in a pot without a drainage hole and I was so concerned I was going to overwater it that I almost never watered it. Which caused it to drink what little water was left in its leaves, shrivel up, and die.
@@chiara9721 Um yes it’s a given that all plants, even cacti need water lol. But, so often people think they need to water them every week.
I really wish I’d watched this video before I watered today. It’s the first day I have watered my calatheas, I have 3, with tap water. 🥴

I was scared too but mine is really happy with new growth 4 months later. So rewarding! I give it medium light not too much the leaves can dry, I use cheap spring water and lots of humidity. I now keep mine in the bathroom and it loves it.

Damn English Ivy... I swear to god they just crispy up on me so quick.
Come to England! it's a complete thug :-)
Patrick Gallagher wherever you’re don’t want it to grow 😂😂 I’ve had three separate plants indoors and killed all three within a week, it just hates me 😫
@@patrickgallagher3513 mine are all very happy so far. I do mist them every evening.
If the ivy is crispy it’s a sure sign of spider mites. Crispy means they’ve taken complete control and it’s too late. The secret is to shower them every month or so and if you notice little fine webs on the leaves,
shower them weekly. After about three times in the shower, the mites will be gone and the plant will bounce back unless it was already too late. Monthly is
good for preventative and maintenance. This is also the case for any other plants with mites or to prevent them. I put them in the shower and drench them and leave them there for several hours afterward. If you literally shower with them, the shampoo and soap you use cleans the plants nicely and kills the mites effectively. It is safe for the plants.

@@purerachet7715 Oh no baby, YOU EARNED IT because you didn't kill it or hinder the bloom lol way to go!
3rd try was a charm:
*Hanging in a SW window.
*Light on top of the Plant
(Not just the trails)
*Distilled water
*Tip....Shower with them...(not Shower water in the soil)...
@Chris,
Thanks for the insight re: Jiffy pots! I suppose sometimes when the plants are being potted up for nursery, [they] are in too much of a hurry or don't realize the Jiffy pots should be broken up a bit before potting up the plant__that would help them break down in the soil through time and watering. 😳 🌱🌿🙌🙌🙌😺
You are a thousand percent correct about that first paragraph.
Nick: Calathea roseopicta
Me: side-eying mine
I have a stromanthe triostar and have found it easy, I put mine in a southern facing window and only bottom water... Never let it dry out completely. Maybe some tips to help someone
English Ivy is a low light plant. At least the ivy growing everywhere in England will tolerant heavy shade.
I grow multiple english ivy’s, for me they do best grown in water with clay pebbles. I most them daily. They grow very well, especially the non variegated ones.
I’m so in love with your plant videos and your lovely manner . I think I speak for many of us when I say you seem like the plant friend we would all like to know! Certainly makes me feel better about my plant losses when I hear about your losses!
My mother's Dracaena Marginata is standing in the darkest corner of a living room, it was over watered (literally standing in water for few days) and surprisingly it's growing very fast. :O
Yes, in my experience Marginata's do great in dark areas. I keep mine out of the way from any direct light and it does very well!
Struggling with Peperomia... They usually do well for a while and then slowly die off....

1) UA-cam has a Nudity-Problem as well as a P0rn-Problem. Both can be searched up via the search-bar of the plattform.
2) The Report-Option does exist. It can be used, for no cost of money at all, to make the plattform healthier and/or prevent people from getting scammed or insulted or whatever problem you fight via the Report-Option.
Now, my question is: Can you combine those 2 facts into 1 Thing, i wonder?
?
Never knew English ivy was difficult to raise. I've had mine for years. Repotted it a month ago and it grows even faster. Never had any issues with pests.
Same it was my first plant and it grows like a weed
I cant seem to get the hang of dieffenbachia. I have 2 really crappy looking ones.😅
@@ebby6274 I've been hanging on to mine waiting for spring so I can stick it outside in Hope's that warmer temps will save it loo
I have one that is alive and growing BUT it looks nothing like when I bought it. The leaves where pretty and big but today the leaves are tiny in comparison. Had it for over a year though.
Kristie Bihm I think I might try that! So update on the 2 newer ones, they’re still looking okay but lost some leaves. Also only one survived the life support but it looks nothing like what it should 😕
@@ebby6274 I ended up giving up on both of mine and chunking them. They just never recovered and never started looking their best again. Even after I put them outside in the warmer temps of Louisiana. I just can't get the hang of Dieffenbachia. 😅
Great subject matter and yet another wonderful video!! I'd love to see a video where you show the care you give to a plant that's struggling but recovers. Sometimes I have plants that I'm not sure if I should bail on them and throw out or maybe they're salvageable. Heading to your hometown for flower show in March!! YAY! :)
This video made me feel so much better about myself! Plants I’ve killed: English Ivy, Peperomia Obtusifolia, Peperomia Caperata, Peace Lily and Aloe Vera 🙈 Thank you, Nick!
Uh oh...I JUST brought in a peperomia obstusifolia from Lowes.
Are you overwaterer?? Beacuse peperomias can handle real dry conditions. I water my peperomias when leaves get slightly droopy
LT Gemini Haha well... good luck 💕 I think I killed mine by repotting it, honestly, so maybe avoid that?
Ana požar I am 🙈 but I am learning!
as a plant killer also, the only aloe that died on me was when I had a very mouldy apartment (so many worse effects than my aloe dying!!). in my experience, aloes needs lots of sun, don't need humidity and barely water - like when they get bone dry only!! mine have loved being neglected on balconies or in window boxes.
NO:
Succulents
Creeping Charlie
Jade Tree (succulent)
My Dracaena Marginata is recovering for the 3rd time, he's a trooper! I got a Peace Lily for like 2 months and it still looks amazing, but Issa no on the lipstick plant!!!!!!
I have a 20 year old dragon tree I took in a few months ago, and it’s in a shallow pot, and it’s not in direct sunlight, I water it every 3 weeks or so, and it works well for me
I have had my white fusion for about 6 months now, and it LOVES me.
It is true they let you know when to water... but it's a lot sooner than you'd think :P
As for my failures... ah the Peperomia Rotundifolia just... didn't like me.
It’s still bouncing back from its bad state but it started putting out a ton of new growth so I hope it’ll be happy from now on
Calathea Freddie is the best member of a very troubled family!😂

Omg! Ivy and all of the pests in the world!🙄 Thanks for talking about it. I've had thrips and other pests on my Ivy and it was the absolute worst experience! I wish I knew before I brought the plant into my house.
I live in England so English ivy is literally everywhere. I think that spraying spider mites off with water usually deals with them.
First experience with pests indoors since developing my houseplant hobby: Aphids on my ivy. Took it outside immediately and haven't seen aphids on any of my plants indoors since. Luckily it wasn't a big loss: the ivy was from cuttings from my own yard. I brought it in more as an experiment than anything else and kept in mind how many plant youtubers have said they're pest magnets. They are definitely correct!
My english ivy has been thriving for 6 months now. It has tripled in size since I bought it! I keep it hanging in my south facing window and I water it in my shower whenever its dry. I fertilize it once a month. I spray it with neem oil once a month. That's it!

I have rescued literally half of the plants you mentioned, I have a shade clothed back yard (I haaaate direct sun), but growing up in the rainforest of Puerto Rico I learned the tropical plant language... what I never mastered is to domesticate them “indoors”. My big respects to you all that have done this successfully! I’m lucky that I live in Clearwater, Fl. I have almost all the plants you mentioned, and I just water them and feed them with banana peel tea. The peace lily is like a flowering weed, and prayer plants get big and the stems are super leggy. I guess it’s all the humidity I have for free lol.

Thank you for this vid post! Greatly needed for those of us who feel like plant parent LOOOOOSEEERRRS! I felt your frustration and comiserate with you. I can RELATE! Oye. Thank u!
I never let my peace Lillies wilt. It's very stressful for them. By then they are already beginning to die and it halts new growth.
Love love love this video ! More plant UA-camrs should so this and keep it real. Thank you 😊
I agree. Sometimes I think some of these vloggers, others that I watch, show an unrealistic standard....that most people can't attain. We (me specfically..lol) do everything that is told and read about in care, but no matter what, many plants die....even the so called "easy..fool proof" plants.
I agree. I appreciate this video! 👏🏽😊🌱☮️
I’m glad you have been truthful enough to admit it by being a you tuber. I subscribed to you because you have been truthful. I’ve killed several and like you say once I’ve had one die I try to find out what I did wrong and then try to be more attentive to their needs..
You talking sh*t on the calatheas that have broken my heart is theraputic AF 🤣
Thank you for making this video it really made me feel better! I've stopped bringing ferns into my home because they always die from the lack of humidity. I feel better knowing losing plants is part of the hobby :)
I always kill maidenhair fern.
Sharyn Hines yes!!!! I’ve mastered the white fusion calathea, but maidenhair ferns are a no go!
buy a terrarium and put it there😂
Maidenhair fern !!!
åååh I even killed one in a terrarium. It went moldy.
@Madison Brewer,
I bought 2 small and 1 med. at Ikea, as well. 🌱🌿🙌🙌🙌😺
Your videos are so interesting. I love watching them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful plants and their stories with us
I felt like the biggest failure when my Pilea started to die... RIP Pepe.
I hope Pepe is living his best afterlife with the many pilea peperomiodies I've sent to keep him company. RIP unfriendship plants. 😢
Cheers!!
I have an ivy and while watching the video I was like "how weird mone never had pests"
Go over to look at it and OMG IT DOES 😩
Thank you for helping me realize this is a trial and error effect.
Liz Harmonyinflora mine was doing good and is starting to look so sad. Only had it for just shy of a month 😭😂
Next time can you please pick up the kitty and briefly introduce us?
Good idea.
Humidity!
I just ordered a lot of these plants he's talking about and now I'm worried!
Lol
Nick and Calathea : a story.
Don't give up on yours !
idk my ivy is thriving and i do literally nothing special and my peace lily is just straight vibin tbh
Same. Four different types of ivy and two large peace lilies and everybody is having a good time

Did you knew these following facts?
1) UA-cam has a Nudity-Problem as well as a P0rn-Problem. Both can be searched up via the search-bar of the plattform.
2) The Report-Option does exist. It can be used, for no cost of money at all, to make the plattform healthier and/or prevent people from getting scammed or insulted or whatever problem you fight via the Report-Option.
Now, my question is: Can you combine those 2 facts into 1 Thing, i wonder?
Sorry if this was too random,
but this is my Question to you.
You can literally easily find Mobbing,
Nudism,
Sexism,
Scammer,
and so much more on UA-cam.
Its easy to find and use the Reportbutton on,
but people get complacant with how messy the internet is;
but i say thats wrong.
Can you help?
Calatheas and Ctenanthe are by far my favourite plant species. I have found success growing them in Leca and using only rain water, that makes the world of difference, Peace Lilies will thank you if you grow them in Leca, what a difference! White Fusions will grow amazingly in a cloche, they require copious amounts of humidity and live happily inside a cloche, you will barely need to water them in this situation; prior to doing this they just wouldn't last the distance. Hope this helps, give it a shot, Nick...you will be amazed but you do have to use rain, distilled or filtered water. I enjoy your videos!
I've killed sooo many plants 😭 and I mourn each of their deaths still.
Guilt. Just living with the guilt now. I soldier on..
I can't seem to keep pilea alive... and echeveria ...
Emma Altpeter -I’ve claimed the life of a pilea too! 🤦🏾♀️
Mine were doing great indoors, in the Midwest, and then Winter hit....😬😬😬😬😬
They say m. deliciosas are super easy to grow, but I've never been successful with any of them. My wallet is empty and so is my soul.
Lol
They are. I watered mine once every month when I was heavily pregnant and it's the biggest plant I own. I think it's happier when you hardly pay it any heed.
I've grown plants for about 30 years I have always been very lucky I've also mostly mixed my own soil mixtures for different plant requirements A few months ago I decided to buy an expenaive quality soil mixture( I got a bit lazy)..so I went mad and repotted about 20 of my semi favourites ( I have over 300) and all of a sudden have just experienced a bad case of root rot for the first time ever OMG to say I was devastated is an understatement ...I love your honesty and advice and found this video very refreshing and reassuring its a journey of learning no matter how long you have had plants in your life. .
How do you what kind of soil to use?
So even you have kill plants😰 I have kill a lot of plants 😭 I know now even the best makes mistakes.
Thanks for sharing this, I just killed my roses, and I'm so heartbroken but to know all the plant influencers has killed some of their plants, make me feel comforted. I won't give up on my dying plants tho, I'll do my best to make it flourish again !
