Thanks for making these video! I should probably dive into some of this gear and see what I come up with. My dad was in king crimson so I have been hearing poly rhythms for as long as I can remember.

Wow! You just made our week with this comment. Massive fan of your Dad's work and his approach to music. The three 80's KC albums have been such a huge influence on all of us here at VK! Thank you, thank you!

Cool demo! I ordered it yesterday 😃 Can't wait! Will use it more minimalistically - I think many on UA-cam abuse it, more or less. No one says "everything should be running full-stop" on it at all times.

The Subharmonicon has been top of my wishlist for months. Selling some underused and unloved gear to pay for it. It’s going to be a polyrhythmic Spring!

Great demo and I have one of the ~120 originals that were made. This makes substantial improvements to the original silverface. The quantizer and range adjustment alone is worth the purchase, the midi is also very nice. Square in addition to Sawtooth, awesome. The UI is great too allowing for more musical button press changes demonstrated super well here. Honestly has me thinking about letting this 'original' go to get the mass produced version. Also I love seeing it used as just a synth voice, because it's really pretty just like that, I hope they offer in-built duophony soon.

This is the best demo out there. You clearly understand the polyphonic melodic nature of it. You can hear Boards of Canada here, Squarepusher, it's great.
    Kudos, sir.

Man, I wish Moog had put a tiny keyboard on the bottom of the Subharmonicon like they did on the Mother 32. It would be the perfect synth to pair with my eurorack (for me anyway) if they had. That said, I love the idea of an analog module this small with subharmonics AND polyrhythms in the same unit.

beginner question, how would you set a tempo like 120bpm? how would you achieve that?

  • @Noumenon3456

Hey, awesome demo (very musical)!! Quick question; would you recommend this thing as a 'first synth' for someone to get into (semi-)modular (albeit a bit pricey)? I've been playing around with software (particularly REAKTOR) to produce some more electronic stuff. I used to be a professional session bassplayer, so the polyrythms and subharmonics seem super interesting to try some stuff with. It seems very unique and right up my alley.

    also a polyrhythm?

Polyrhythms can have many variations but like standard time signatures can be broken down into "symmetrical" or "asymmetrical". When you feel the beat skip like a broken record, that is asymmetrical and 5/4 would be a good example. So, 5/4 is not a polyrhythm and some may confuse that. Now, if you combine 5/4 with 4/4, that would be a polyrhythm and is basically the combining of two different time signatures at the same "tempo". Now, skew the two rhythms into different tempos and you have both a polyrhythm and polytempo. LOL Lastly, it's important to know that the "partials" of a pitch can be harmonic or inharmonic and it's the inharmonic ones playing alongside the harmonic ones that suggest polyrhythm due to one partial being symmetrical and the other asymmetrical. Although not technically a 'rhythm", they behave as such but at the frequency level and not the beat level. However, if you combine certain frequencies together and listen to them is the left and right ear respectively, it creates a "binaural beat".
