One more thing about Synology snapshots - they can be made immutable (read only). For a period of time that you set, even an administrator can’t modify or delete them. If your drives get crypto’d it’s trivial to restore your files. And even if they manage to break into the Nas, they can’t change or delete your immutable snapshots.
yup ... Tailscale and Hyper Backup between two locations is far easier. And Tailscale is in Synology's Package Center so no having to build in Container Manager/Docker
Tailscale also works when being a cgnat.. I am behind a triple nat in the sense I have a 4G CGNAT connection and I have my 4g modem plugged into a Tp Link Omada VPN Router ER605 providing Dhcp to all my clients and I also have to leave my 4g modem in router mode because if I change it to bridge mode I cannot access the router advanced feature such a 4g band preference..
I got a Synology 2-bay pretty recently and have been manually syncing my important desktop files to it because I haven't really had the time to dig into the feature sets, so this was a huge help. The photos app on it was a game changer for my phone, though!
Thank you so so much for talking about this. At my job, I have been considering Synology for our new backup solution over Veeam (Veeam gets expensive with the licensing. Currently spending about $5k/yr) and with Synology, we don't have to pay for any more licenses and can practically do the exact same functions as Veeam.
This! - We don't use Veeam, but do spend a lot of money on two other software backup systems. For the same price I could buy at least a couple of these synology systems a year.
I have a synology 1522 which is my first NAS device, experience was great as a noob however after while upgradability and price-to-performance ratio became my main issue, If synology can release DSM as a standalone software like TrueNAS, OMV and UnRaid to install in our choice of hardware that will be amazing and I will continue using my 1522.. till that moment, i plan to change/migrate from Synology to my own custom NAS using OMV
ABB looks really nice! 👍 Is it encrypted? I’m really not a fan of using rsync for backup though. Yes I know, it’s possible to use it for proper backup with a pretty advanced script but so many people use it as a sync and think it’s a backup. Use proper backup applications folks, not syncing!
@@RaidOwl Each to their own I guess, but to me snapshots isn't backup either. The rely on the data to be intact. To me snapshots are for correcting human errors. Backup is for restoring from hardware errors, corruption and environmental impact. Now, snapshots is an important tool in a good backup application though, that's allows it to be incremental very easy. I appreciate all of your videos mate! If you have a video of how you setup your rsync and snapshots I have missed it. Will take a look! 👍
Im curious. Is it better to have the hard drives mounted horizontally or Vertically. Does it even matter when we talk about extending the life of your hard disk drives?
I got a reason for my bad backup. I'm broke, working father supporting my wife and kid. My truenas is backed up periodicly vis usb. To an external hdd, unplugged in a fireproof safe. Better than nothing
@RaidOwl thx man! I'm doing my best because we'll, we don't have physical copies of videos and picture of our growing child. I want to be sure to keep them.
Buy me a proper backup system, and lash fiber from my house to a remote location. Good news, i have above ground utilities, so just lash up the fiber 20km and we'll be good!
Maybe just maybe. An ipsec tunnle instead of an fibre connection :O. Heck why not a token-ring network for the neigbourhood. That would be glorious. I would watch the living *hit out of that.
Becareful with Synology's Active Backup... one day you will wake up with an error "unfortunately we could not backup your data please contact Synology" and no other explanation to sort out the issue on your own.
Umm yea. I realize this is a sponsored video but how many people have enough money to burn on this setup. Even if I ignore the cost of the drives this is edging close to divorce territory.
Wow! Synology is so flexible that I bet they can do the splits!

much much respect for the ( Light Mode ) notification =D keep going man u are the best

Today had to list requirements for software and included 'Dark mode (required)'
not enough "agrees" on this comment. Agreed!

That's a nice feature 💯
thats great to know, ill be setting this up soon
Tailscale on each nas is by far the easiest way to to remote backup on a synology nas.. No open ports on the router and very easy to set up
yup ... Tailscale and Hyper Backup between two locations is far easier. And Tailscale is in Synology's Package Center so no having to build in Container Manager/Docker
this is the correct answer. don't open ports to your NAS. tailscale allows for a generous number of devices on its free tier.
Tailscale also works when being a cgnat.. This is the way
The Tailscale Package Center is not the latest version (at least on my ds920) so I had to manually install it. Very simple and works amazing

Hey would you please give this noob some advice to getting a good NAS? What should I search?
I appreciate the light mode warning. 8-)
Gave you time to get your sunglasses on
Regarding Deduplication; it would be curious to see the performance hit for utilizing it on a Synology vs TrueNAS.
Wow! Synology is so flexible Nastia Liukin is jealous!
Now, carrier pigeon isn't the worst idea, you know...
So I’ve heard 🤔
For me, hyper backup is the best thing synology have made.

16:50 the place is your friend who has the best anime collection 😂
Jokes aside, Synology has a rather robust system for all forms of data backup.
Hey Brett, awesome video! Do the Macs need a special client software to backup to the Backup for Business or does it use TimeMachine?
It’s uses Active Backup for Business Agent, super easy
11:43 but Synology hasn’t sponsored and provided a backup system for me that’s a valid excuse too since it doesn’t grow on trees I think
100% agreed. Cost is always a factor
You can also use Tailscale instead of opening up ports in your router
Im curious. Is it better to have the hard drives mounted horizontally or Vertically. Does it even matter when we talk about extending the life of your hard disk drives?
Synology stuff seems like a very nice to have but that price point is a little steep for my little homelab. Maybe one day :)
The active backup on synology is cleaaan. I need that, but synology so pricey.
unfortunately i cant use synology as it doesnt work with proxmox or xenserver VM backups, only hyperV and ESXI.
I got a reason for my bad backup. I'm broke, working father supporting my wife and kid. My truenas is backed up periodicly vis usb. To an external hdd, unplugged in a fireproof safe. Better than nothing

Looks nice. Synology Backup looks like Time Machine on MacOS lol.
Big tru
Can you recommend a smaller(less expensive) setup for like less than 10 TB of data?
DS224+ with dual 10TB HGST Ultrastar drives 👍🏼
Old PC running Unraid with a few SATA drives thrown in.
Yeah def if you don’t care about the Synology ecosystem
14:26 What the eff David Blaine
Thumb up for light mode countdown 👍🙂
😎😎😎
save money by rsyncing to your zima board dual nas - what happen is your new nas breaks?
How come you don't have your netgate connected and running.
Unifi 💪🏼
:( OPNSENSE BOI !@@RaidOwl
Nahhhh

Like use a system I’ve already been using for a year? Crazy right?
@@RaidOwl right ;-)
I cry and rub my nipples every time I hear that outro!

you dont need a physical remote backup system, just use the cloud
Wow! I copied a other comment. :(
OOF, that attack on the education system :D

Not sure when you got married but congrats 🎉🍻
Y'know Proxmox has a dark mode now, right?
Yeah just never touch the backup system so hadn’t updated it lol.
@@RaidOwl Fair. For some cockeyed reason it's a cookie rather than a server-side setting too.

Nah, not doing it.
Out goes open source, and in goes vendor lock in!
What *exactly * are you going to do when the hardware fails??
Put the drives in something else?
Umm yea. I realize this is a sponsored video but how many people have enough money to burn on this setup. Even if I ignore the cost of the drives this is edging close to divorce territory.
A lot
Why wouldn’t one use PBS for PVEs?? Even with other methods, it’s still super useful.
