    Here a 60 years old dutch dude :)
    My old 415+died a couple off days ago I bought a DS923+ (black friday deal) home use for me its enough. My plexmedia is on it, but my plexserver runs on a debian system with a graphics card which does the encode jobs further I use it for my photo collection, and as a backup system . I mounted some shares for my proxmox server. For now I use link aggregation, but I would consider to buy a 10gb nic and put in a nvme voor read caching (proxmox server), time will learn if I need more ram

    I will save up for the 1522+ as I have two j series NAS at this point and would like to consolidate them. I am a home user these units backup my HTPC and is acts as a second media server beyond the HTPC. The 2nd unit backs up my gaming PC. I also have an 8TB external HD that acts as a backup to the 1st NAS. My HTPC does all the transcoding for me before archival. This was a very good video I just wish I had more $$ to upgrade all at once.

    Interesting review, I'm looking for a 4 bay NAS, previous was a Netgear 314, they dropped Cloudsync so bought a QNAP TVS-473A 5 months ago, major issues with disks dropping out. Backplane Mosfet failures well known about. So suggestions welcome.

    What are these work arounds mentioned for transcoding? I'm looking to buy my first NAS and I really wanted the 423+ for a multimedia server but unfortunately it didn't go on sale like I hoped for Black Friday. The 923+ did though and its at $480 on Newegg, Amazon, and BH Photos. I didn't want to do the 923+ because of it's supposed lack of transcoding but at that price, I'm considering it.

    I got a 923+ and have to say it's excellent for me. I'm even running PLEX and while I know there is no hardware decode, it works fine for me there too. Very happy with my purchase. I did upgrade it tho to 16 GB Ram (3rd party - works fine) and to 400 GB Synology NVMe drives. Also have the 10GB network port that connects via a dedicated switch to my desktop. All in all I think it's an amazing NAS - love it.

    Hi! I literally bought this device yesterday! I don't know much about compatibility and how it works. I saw an Ironwolf drive that has this model number on the compatibility list "ST10000VN000 - 3AK101" (it's the only 10TB drive from ironwolf in the list) and I am wondering if it is the same drive as the one that I'm wanting to buy. The one I want has this model number "ST10000VN0008". As you can see, almost all the numbers are the same, but this one has an "8" in the end, while the other one has "3AK101". Is it the same thing? Can I use this model even if it's not the same thing? And one thing I would like to know is: do the exos drives work on this device?

      @R0B711 6 місяців тому +3

      VN000 is the '21 Version of the VN008 ('18 Version).

    i own an old synology ds415play and are currently looking at updating - it seems synology are trying to lock users into their environment like apple with enterprise drives and ssds that are artificially locked to their hardware. Instead I'm thinking of upraid, but the frustrating thing about DIY is a lack of mobo choice in ITX if you want a nice small form factor, and the cost of a nice build is close to a turnkey box anyway. You can buy cheap old servers, but they are super noisy and power hungry. When I add up all the costs, I'm basically so close to turnkey but have to build and manage the sucker which seems to defeat the whole purpose of NAS IMO. Maybe ZImacube is the way to go.

    Hello:
    A year ago we took your advice to buy a NAS for our small office. Unfortunately I don't know what we are doing wrong, but the NAS is excessively slow. We have connected it to the work network and everything is fine but there is no way to make it run faster. A 200Gb file takes all night on the internal network and I don't want to tell you about sending it online.
    Please, do you have a guide on how to configure it correctly or something like that?
    Any help would be welcome
    Thanks

    • @nascompares
      @nascompares  Місяць тому

      That does sound off. That file transfer (keeping in mind whether it's 1 giant 200GB file or an archive that totals 200GB), Tahat sound take around 30-40 minutes tops on a standard gigabit connection. It would like it could be 1) your Priority or service working against you on your managed switch 2) you are working with q bridging switch or vLAN in the middle that's poorly configured or 3) the network subnet, etc are poorly configured (maybe even 4, your browser is limiting /throttling uploads). Quick way to eliminate of its the network or the NAS! Safely power down the NAS, then move it next to a PC, then DIRECTLY connect the NAS and the PC with a network cable (nothing in between), then use the Synology assistant to find the NAS. Connect to it (the IP will have changed, likely to one starting 168) and then upload the file as normal. If it's faster, then you know it's the network. If it's still slow, it's the network/network adapter on the PC

    I've had mine in the office for 6+ months but I bought it as a backup unit for multiple PCs and VMs. I like ABB for this purpose. It also runs a handful of docker containers. That's all I ask of it so I haven't been disappointed. As an all around home NAS, this unit falls sadly short. As do the majority of their current offerings. There is no reason to get a Synology NAS for the home. Their proprietary nonsense with drives, ram and NVMEs is alarming to say the least. For a private company, they sure act like they are driven by shareholders. How about listening to at least part of your customer base? Other vendor's RAM works without error. Widen the compatibility list. Do the same with NVMEs. Throw in a Celeron. I'd buy that.

It's incredibly loud during drive activity (the chassis seems to be adept at amplifying drive noise) and CPU usage during Plex streaming *without transcoding happening* sits at 99% for no discernible reason, almost constantly. I thought the lack of HW transcode wouldn't be a big deal, but apparently it is. Synology really picked the worst possible CPU for this application.

    LOL, no. A very apt comparison though tbh, in the sense that they're both utterly ridiculous.
    One because, well it's someones worn out shoes.
    And the other because, those troglodytes tried to market a dual core as superior to a quad core. On a device meant for multitasking no less. GTFO 😂

    Please don't pronounce "portfolio" as "port failure"; it sounds needlessly alarmist :)

      Not using transcoding (you shouldn't be transcoding inside your own home anyway, and not everyone shares it with people outside the home) or getting a mini PC with an Intel CPU and QuickSync to run your media server on separately, pretty much. You can try enabling hardware accelerated transcoding with an AMD CPU with integrated graphics as well, but I've heard mixed results.
