    If you have purchased a new NAS Drive in the last few months, then chances are that you would use it to the best if its abilities increasing the memory to the maximum in order to run more apps and allow more users to access the device at any time. The latest 2020 Generation of Synology NAS (the DS920+, DS420+, DS720+ and DS220+), much like the older gen devices, all arrive with the ability to upgrade the memory to 8GB, but some users like to push this limitation, using unofficial memory from brands like crucial or Kingston, installing bigger and faster memory. Generally speaking, Synology NAS has a long-standing reputation for being underpowered when compared to brands like QNAP and Asustor, at least out of the box, choosing to focus on their award-winning DSM software. This is changing a bit in 2019/2020 with the newer Synology drives featuring improved hardware choices, but still, for many, it seems a little underwhelming. One potential benefit that’s highlighted to improve performance considerably multiple users is to upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) in the Synology NAS drive. Today’s post will cover my thoughts on the usefulness of upgrading the factory-installed RAM, how to determine if a RAM upgrade is needed at all and exactly how to do this. Let’s start with the latter, do you need to upgrade RAM?

    Update: i actually tested by installing 16gb ram in ds920plus, YES IT DOES GET USED BY THE SYSTEM! i was not running any application, just populating my nas drives...i checked in resource monitor, its shows 20gb memory, about 2.1 gb reserved and used by system, rest 17.8gb was used as cache. i was only left with 208mb free memory, rest all was used as cache. so in short yes not only does system recognize 16gb ram but actually use it as well.

    Hi folks! I just bought a Synology DS920+ NAS and I was thinking of upgrading the memory. I have now bought an 8gb model as shown in the article above. Would you consider a SHR backup solution to be enough of a backup, or would you suggest to have an additional layer of security? I mean I know it's best to have more than 1 layer of security, but considering I need like 12tb of data this is not so cheap to be installed.

I have left it like that for over 30mins and still did not work once I removed it worked . the Ram I added was 'Crucial Notebook DDR$ - 2666 SODIMM 1.2V CL19' the Part no is CT16G4SFRA266. any idea or thoughts

    This is very tempting but I have to choose stability over capacity hence will stick to Synology's 8GB and run RAM demanding VM's in the cloud instead. This video however proves it's feasible to run such setup which is great. It's now a question why Synology limit their customers to such low RAM configurations when they offer VMs on thir devices and cometition show it can be manufactured very cheap... presumably they want us to buy higher models but I don't need a massive 8+ slot expensive NAS sitting at home to be able to run a couple of VM's. It's all about money these days isn't it? On the other hand I have had two devices at DS home and RS at client's office (60+ users) and both have never failed me hence can recommend.

    32GB modules don't work in the DS920 before I found that out in another video which covered that. I ended up using a 16GB 3200MHz module instead of 2666MHz because there isn't much of a cost difference. The NAS works well with a bit of speed up using the 3200MHZ module as its more to do with the increase in RAM. The 16GB DDR4 module I used is a Samsung M471A2K43DB1-CWE with a memory arrangement 2RX8 (dual rank). Be sure to buy dual rank for your Synology memory upgrades, supposedly they work better.

    • @pepito9112
      @pepito9112 3 роки тому +5

      In any memory configuration, the system throttles down the speed to the slowest stick. So your 3200 will be running at 2666. The system could not work if you have memory running at different speeds.

    • @user-ue6tr8td3v
      @user-ue6tr8td3v 3 роки тому +3

      @@pepito9112 I agree the memory throttles down to 2666, but the main point is that there was not much cost difference to afford the 3200 and that the cause of the speed up was more ram; it won't be outdated before the 2666. I did not say all the ram memory was running at 3200! At any rate the 3200 is working fine for me, so I don't agree with you that my system is not working; you are just guessing while I am speaking from actual experience.

    • @pepito9112
      @pepito9112 3 роки тому +7

      My apologies if I comment offended you. I don’t believe at any point I was claiming your system was not working rather, I was pointing out that memory modules do not run at different speeds hence throttling down to the lowest speed. Your sentence stating “the NAS works well with a bit of speed up using 3200 MHz” is what I understood as you claiming the additional speed it was operating as. Again my apologies for misunderstanding.
      Hope all is well with from the totally random guy in the internet.

      I heard back from Intel. They danced around the subject. Hard to pin them down. But I think I was mostly successful. It seems that Intel is saying that 8 GB is just a formality. They say that it is up to the implementer if to allow more RAM use or not. I'm going to interpret that to mean that if it work it works. As tests have shown success. I suppose I'm somewhat satisfied but not 100% satisfied. I don't know why Intel needs to fuel the fire with the confusion on stating that ram of 8 GB is a Max when it is possible to go past it. They should simply not state a max at all or say that the max is up to the implementer.
