Excellent review and explanation. Funny thing is, I had exactly the same impression and experience of the game as a 9- or 10-year-old. I played it often with some friends back in Vienna. Now years later I bought it for my son and can’t wait to play.
the game is been sitting on the shelf since last x-mas, I just found your cute review today very helpful and I'm going to give it a go changing a bit the rules as you suggested.
Thanks for this video, I played this game today with some friends after 10 years since my last game. I agree with you about tweking the game to make it more enjoyable for everyone. For example, one rule that is not explained in the instructions is: can Mister X go past a detective if he get the bus or underground? I think he shouldn't. In this way, the strategy of the games gets deeper.
Hi, I bought this game for the family at Xmas and want to clarify something in relation to playing the game. Can Mr X go over where a detective is to get to another point. For example, say if a detective is on number 70 on the board, can Mr X get from 87 to 41 where the bus goes past number 70 which is a taxi rank? Also, if the situation was reversed and Mr X was on number 70 and a detective travelled from 87 to 41, would Mr X then be caught or do you have to land on exactly where Mr X is? Thanks Nas
Yes that is called "cutting off" and you CAN move mr X like that by the standard game rules, and u won't lose unless the detective moves to a position mr x occupies! Hope this helps :)
Hello, merry Christmas. Very good review. I got this game today for Christmas. As I am studying English I would like to know where you accent is from: south-est of Great Britain?
Thanks for the review! Got this for Christmas today and although due to Covid I can’t really play it yet I’m looking forward to it. Maybe you can tweak it so that Mr X can only get new tickets when he reveals himself, or that the detectives can share their tokens to help the others if they run out?
UK's police National HQ is Scotland Yard, and Singapore Police Force National HQ is at New Phoenix Park, a max security facility where the SPF HQ shares the same ground as the Ministry of Home Affairs building and the Internal Security Department central HQ.
How do you get to round 24? The rule book I have say the game is won by Mr X, and the detectives only get 22 counters (10+8+4) though I have seen other rules with 23 counters (11+8+4). Still, I dont see how you get to round 24?
Thanks for the heads up on the rules! I opened this at Christmas for the kids and thought OMG… Btw, have you noticed the ghost like orb that passes on your left side at about 13:35? Might need a call to the Ghostbusters!!! 😂 I’m sure it’s just a trick of the light… 👻
Instead of limiting Mr x, give the players more subway and bus passes (by letting them reuse them) and thus also make the game more environmentally friendly :-)
I played so much of this game with my older friend when i was a child, such good memories. Just bought it now and im trying to remember the rules but there was no english in the manual XD
vishnu sarvagna I was taught that Mister X has access to the pool of tickets at all times. So all remaining tickets left over from other players, and this allowance goes up due the other detectives adding tickets to the pool as they use them.
Great review! Out of interest, have you ever played Whitehall Mystery? It seems quite similar to Scotland Yard, and I wondered if you thought the different limitations on each player made it a better or worse game? Personally, I've never played either, so currently trying to decide which of the two to buy. Thanks. And keep up the great work!
It's curious that you mention that the game is tilted in favor of Mr. X because I've yet to play a game where Mr. X has not been caught. It's possible that I'm just a terrible Mr. X.
Is Mr.x only caught when detective lands on the current position of Mr.x or he can also be cought if the detective lands on the place where he was in the past?
@@pptmstrMagiC in another video it was written that Mr.x is caught even if they land on a previously occupied space...I know in reality you cant catch a thief by going in his past visited places.....but.......its game
The game instruction manual states that the only other way to win (besides landing on the spot Mr. X occupies at the time you land on it) is if all the detectives basically have surrounded him and Mr. X cannot move to a station that is unoccupied. So basically if Mr. X is in a gridlock.
Yea first try too lol I was watching another youtuber talking about this game and why I came to check it out but anyway he explained a bit about the game and how he lost and was found first try no joke
Actually in every round I've played so far Mr X was caught. I definitely don't agree with the review in this sense. At least if the players (the police) are all cooperating and planning their moves together.
My name is Matt, I'm a filmmaker from a production company called Chocolate Films. As part of an exhibition display for a children's museum in London, we're currently creating a silent montage of various different types of game play including board games, video games, etc. We would love to use your video in this montage. I'm just wondering if your material is copyright free, or if you would grant us a licence to use this clip for this purpose? Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks in advance, Matthew Gibb
My first time watching a video on Scotland Yard- What do u mean Mr. X by revealing himself because he is already on the board and everyone can already see him.
Well, the instructions of the Ravensburger edition say otherwise. Mr.X is visible at all times and only disappears on moves 3, 8, 13 etc. At turns 3, 8, 13 etc. he becomes invisible and he also becomes invisible when playing the black card. Either the instructions are mistranslated from German language to English or this review is exactly counter-rules. Does anyone else have this issue, while listening to this review?
Yes! We always played as per this review but today we looked at the instructions and it sounds like he only vanishes as you said so came to view this video to see which was right
I’ve played it many times over the years ...although it seems heavily stacked in mr x’s favour, actually its not...it is a good test of the intelligence of the detectives and most of the times mr. x is caught quickly...1 problem however is mr. x has to be honest in declaring when he is caught...many a times I remember ppl not being on that front....
In my matches with friends, Mr. x almost always gets caught if the all the police are played by a single opponent and of course the trick is you never rush and before every reveal move by Mr x , it is advantageous to keep all your police as close to a underground station
3:08 That was the WORST explanation of "extra players". I couldn't understand anything this guy was talking about. He shows 5 colored pieces, then goes on this half-assed rambling explanation of what to do if there are 2-3 other extra players, or if you're lacking 2-3 other players I don't know. I have no idea what he's trying to say from 3:08-3:48.
Oh and the black tickets can also be used to cross the river on stations 194, 157, 115 & 108, so an alternative escape route that only Mr. X has :-)
Danny30011980 do you mean 118?

Great explanation. I'm having to code this for a computing project and needed to know the rules to even get started. This helped a bunch!
Good review! Just like in real life, police are more restricted than criminals.
History has shown us that a bunch of unrestricted police are far more dangerous than a few unrestricted thieves..

haha ... thats true
I have this game. I felt overwhelmed trying to figure out the game so i can play with my kids. I will have to watch this..for the 3rd time.
There is a Junior version for Kids if you want - much easier!
This is a game of skill. No chance like rolling of die or randomness involved. Just luuuurve this board game.
Great explanation...much better than some other videos that were just rambling away reading from the instructions booklet. Thanks for this.
Letters From Whitechapel is an excellent game to move on to after you've mastered Scotland Yard.

Then you people have played with kids or people with low IQ. It's impossible to catch mr. X with normal rules
I also asume that it's almost impossible to catch Mr. X if played by a skilled player or am I unaware of any special strategy?
Can we play two players?
