"The fellow is wary and cunning to the last degree. It is not what we know but what we can prove. If we make one false move the villain may escape us yet." - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Couldn't help quoting from Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'. Thanks for the video Rodney.
I bought the game the day after this video landed and my 7-year old has been loving it. Thanks a ton for your efforts in helping us discover such gems!
I just received this game as a birthday present yesterday, I haven't played it yet but I'm pretty excited about it, it looks very fun. Greetings from Mexico!
Wow, what an exciting game! Thank you for all the detailed explanations. It's so nice when there is such a great overview & playthrough for something so complex with so many nuances!!
Fantastic explanation, as usual, this time of the new version of the Scotland Yard boardgame. I really like the old version and made my own visor in cardboard. Some changes of the rules and the small player boards are new. One thing to keep in mind when you play as Moriarty. Try to write down the station numbers in another order than you normally would, to prevent the hunters to see wich station you are going to next. I also "doodled" beside the number to make it even more difficult to register the correct number.
Hi Rodney! Absolutely love your videos, you break down the rules clearer than anyone i know. Ive had Hexplore it: Forests of Admiron in my shelf for about 2 years and never played it once because theres not a single how to play it on youtube. Would be more than awesome if you made a video about it :D
Question about black ticket (regular SY edition): if mr x stands on a number with only a possibility to travel with a taxi, and mr x uses a black ticket, can he use that as a bus or subway ticket to the closest bus or subway station?
Other then briefly going over the Standard edition rules at the end of this video, I have never taken a deep dive into them. And I can't say with confidence if the Standard rules in this edition are exactly the same in the "Standard only" editions. So I can't answer this question with confidence.
Nope, the black tickets function as a "any" ticket but must follow the rules of the ticket it's being used as, as well as allow for boat access. So a bus would still need a bus station and same for an underground
I’ve been playing this game tonight and were confused as to whether you are able to go “through” the other tokens? For instance if someone is on the train track, are you able to miss one stop and then go to the next one, or does the token on the next station “block” that route. I hope this makes sense. Really enjoyed playing this tonight!
Check here: ua-cam.com/video/iyY1CTAvSgU/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=499 and here: ua-cam.com/video/iyY1CTAvSgU/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=577 And let me know if that addresses your question.
Question please: if Moriarty is on his station and Lestrade places his ability chip exactly in that station, it is considered that Moriarty is cathed and the detectives win? Thank you very much!
Rules question: You said that as long as a detective can move, even a bobby, the game continues. But if a bobby is treated like it has infinite moves, then it would never end unless all 3 crimes are committed or he is caught right?
It also ends after 16 rounds if Moriarty is not caught by then. It just ends earlier if detectives cannot move anymore as it'd be pretty trivial to run out the clock for Moriarty. And bobbies are only in the game if there's few players.
Thanks for the great teach as always. :) I'm a sucker for a Sherlock Holmes game but I've been feeling a little like the theme is too often pasted on lately, plus I feel like I've got the ultimate Holmes game anyway ("Watson & Holmes"). But I've never played the original "Scotland Yard" so this could push me over the edge. Is "SY" generally regarded as a good game, or just something people have lots of nostalgia for?
That's a tough one to answer. I tend to avoid weighing in on how "good" a game is - as that's going to be so dependent on the player's personal tastes. I can say that the game has been on the market for years and is still being played today, so that's a certain type of factual indicator, at least! Thanks for checking out the video!
I just bought the game and played our very first game. There’s one thing that i can’t understand. The player who chose to be Moriarty, everytime he is On his 3/8 move (and so On) allegendly ended up being inside an hideout. As of, everytime he was supposed to tell us where moriarty was, he never did thanks to his ability inside the hideout. Did we make a mistake? Does he can actually use the ability not to tell detectives his position during his “circled” moves? Cuz if we did the right thing it’s actually very very hard to catch him. He ended up being inside an hideout for his 3rd, 8th, 13th, 18th and 24th move, leading Us detective to lose our game. Is that possibile?
I'm sorry, I'm not sure I'm entirely following your question, but here's what I'd suggest: watch the video and pay attention to the wording of the rules as presented here, it should help you double check if you were doing anything incorrectly.
Quick Question, If Lestrade moves making it M's turn (I'm pretty sure) And M does nothing and is thinking on where to go then Lestrade uses their ability when they have moved In short, Can you move then use your ability? I had this problem when I was playing Scotland Yard just today with my sibling
Yes, especially because Lestrade's ability is resolved after they move (they put their marker on the space they moved "from", so they have to move in order to open up that space). Now, if your problem is that you think your opponent is done their turn, and you're trying to take your turn, but then before you do, they jump in and say "wait, I think I'll use Lestrade's ability now", sure, I can see how that could be annoying. To solve that, I'd simply discuss with the players, and agree "when you're done your turn, please tell me your done, and then you can't decide after to do anything else, it's the next player's turn". This isn't so much a problem of the rules, but more about the etiquette between your players. If you can come to an agreement on that, you should be fine.
we have a house rule based on not reading the rules properly that watson asks were are u and moriarti has to state landmark park river or none it originated as a mistake but his power somehow seems weak compered to some of the others i feel
That's an interesting house rule. I would suggest to my game group that we try that, except I'm pretty sure that I would end up being the one having to give everyone else clues due to my rules mistakes! 😉 -Chaz
I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean (but we might not be thinking of the same thing). As you can see here, players would see when a special ticket is being used, because the special type of ticket would be moved to Moriarty's board (which people would see): ua-cam.com/video/iyY1CTAvSgU/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=868

I like the variant where Holmes loses his wallet and becomes X as the police try to deduce where he is so they can return the wallet. Holmes is traveling around town trying to find the wallet, assuming that police chasing him actually work for Moriarty. 🥷
That box spinning intro was so cool

I hope you and your family enjoy the game when you get a chance to play it!

The Lestrade chip doesn't "catch" Moriarty. It's just a roadblock effect. Hope that helps.
Rodney, will you please make a tutorial for the board game called “Deal with the devil” by Czech Game Edition?
Hi Miffy, I avoid pre-announcing games I might do, as my schedule can change and I don’t like to disappoint.
Rules question: You said that as long as a detective can move, even a bobby, the game continues. But if a bobby is treated like it has infinite moves, then it would never end unless all 3 crimes are committed or he is caught right?
Right, when Bobbie’s are in the game, they will always be able to move.
I guess unless you get the absurd case of stuck detectives blocking every path of a bobby, but I don't know that that's possible 🤔
It also ends after 16 rounds if Moriarty is not caught by then. It just ends earlier if detectives cannot move anymore as it'd be pretty trivial to run out the clock for Moriarty. And bobbies are only in the game if there's few players.

Does Moriarty need to announce when he picks up a special ticket? Like the double move or the black ticket?
