Unfortunately since I've been watching you, I knew this day was coming. You have tremendous drive, tenacity, enthusiasm and a wonderful entrepreneurial spirit. You will come back and you will learn from this and be successful. As a business owner who was fortunate to sell my business, I want to show you some areas that led you to this day. First, you focused on "Revenue" and not "Profit". Profit Dollars are KING not Revenue dollars. Secondly, you added way too much expense dollars by growing too fast. A wise CPA asked me when I started my business, "What would you rather have, One more dollar of Revenue or one less dollar in expense?" The answer is one less dollar in expense. You took on too much expense with drivers, trucks, trailers etc. combined with the factors out of your control, rising insurance & fuel costs and shrinking broker rates. Turn in the trucks to Enterprise and sell off what you can. Lastly, the most important thing is your beautiful wife and family and your health. The last time I looked you had all that. You are Blessed! Any company would be lucky to hire you! I can't teach someone the INTERNAL DRIVE you have. That is a gift from Almighty God and you need to recognize that. You are not a failure. To use your words, you just earned an MBA the hard way. Ask the good Lord to give you direction and He will. "For I know the plans I have for you, Alex, declared the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11. God bless you.
Agreed, love his drive, but from day one he needed for someone else to be in charge of the money. Some one with the power to say NO! With 17 trucks out there he needed a minimum of a $1 million cash oh shit fund for surprises.
You did not fail. You help 1000's of people, you inspired so many of us by allowing us to watch your journey, however smooth or bumpy it was. So many of us have found a way to make a living on our own terms because of you...... keep your head up and keep us up to date on your next adventure! Much respect Alex!
We signed on with Alex in November. I found Alex to be 100% genuine and honest. Any good feelings I have about this industry are firmly rooted in this guy and his character and integrity. In six months we were never left without a load, never deadheaded more than 200 miles and money was in the bank EVERY Friday morning. I have absolutely zero regrets signing on with Alex and TowPiglet, it has been a wonderful adventure and an excellent learning platform If a guy of his intelligence and integrity can be put under by this industry I don't hold much hope for anyone else under same conditions as exist right now in this market and economy to thrive or succeed Alex it has been a pleasure getting to know you and I cant tell you how much we appreciate your faith and patience with us. I have no doubt whatever you do from this day forward brother you will be successful.

Well said. Been an independent trucker since 1998. Like any industry it has it’s up and downs. Alex is a really great guy. He’ll be fine and you will too. ✌️
Bro...ive never in my 31 years on this earth heard the amount of employees talk positive about their boss like this especially in trucking. This is my first time seeing one of your videos but that speaks volumes and ive never even met you. good shit bro
I’ve been watching you from the beginning. You have come along way from changing axles on the side of the road. But don’t see this as a failure. I’ve opened and closed businesses for the last 30 years. I’ve made money and lost everything. I’m in trucking now. Own MC. I don’t take direction well from others. I’m never afraid to take risks and start a business. We only live once. You learn from this and keep going Alex. The man who never made a mistake. Never made anything☘️
I never thought about how many things are entirely out of your control in this industry. Trucks and trailers jumped 50% in cost, fuel doubled, and insurance doubled in the span of 1 year, while rates stayed the same or even dropped slightly. That’s just a lot to overcome all at once.
Honestly this business hotshot trucking is definitely not everything that it’s cracked up to be and it’s definitely not a get rich quick type of business like most people that are either getting into this business and sone who already are in the business actually thought because they see people on UA-cam and social media bragging about how much money they’re making every month and honestly that’s when the hotshot truckers with common sense and are for the most, pretty intelligent people who really truly did their research before even stepping foot in this business and truly have a genuine plan with being in the hotshot trucking world will last for years to come even through these horrific times we are living and experiencing right now. there are too many kids I see out there that have no clue what they’re doing at all from driving to compliance to having the proper equipment in their tool box when picking up a load from a shipper I’ve seen some ridiculous things out there but Alex is a true inspiration he actually had the balls to take it to the level he did and it just didn’t work only because of the problems we are facing in our country theses days I’m truly sorry I feel bad but Alex u will be great at any business you get involved in brotha stay up
When trucks and trailers jump 50% it is the time to be a seller not a buyer. His problem is that he eyed increasing sales instead of increasing profits first and didnt have the necessary business experience or finances to support it.
Trump warned everyone what would happen if potato head Biden got in office I hope everyone effected by what is going on in the United States voted for potato head Biden your getting what you voted for
I have admired you since watching you when you had just your truck. Your work ethic and integrity are to be commended. You have learned invaluable lessons that no college could ever teach you. Good luck buddy. You got this!
I’m sorry to hear this young man. I also went through this sort of things some yrs ago. My business was in sheet metal fabrication and in 07-08 the economy was going down hill the housing market was taken a hit. My supply cost had risen by 60% the house construction was down by 40% in my area. I raised prices to try to keep up but it was just the start until I had no Choice but to let my 30 employees go and close down the operation then on a personal note I was going through colon cancer and a divorce. It was a very rough period in my life the Constant thought of being a complete failure and will be with you for some time. But the best teacher is failure and after a while you’ll start to mentally feel better and move on with your life. I started another fab shop in 2010 this time a little differently instead of high priced journeyman I started used the rapid growing high tech Machines that were just coming on and using people more of a strictly labor force and started selling to the auto manufacturing companies. I ended up selling the company and retiring 1 1/2 yr ago and living my best life. As long as you still keep the hustle and determination alive in you Alex you’ll be okay. Good luck son
Dr.Frag, congratulations on n your own success as well. That's also a tough business in today's economy imho. I have met so manyyy Americans that have sold or shut down their businesses since obidumb took control with their satanists agendas. Folks are just getting out asap it appears n retiring with less n much sooner than they expected. We are systematically being destroyed financially, Spiritually n as Constitutional Republic. Divorce is worse than sicknesses, yet I don't have colon cancer. But have 500k in spinal injuries n 24/7/365 pain being all I could be with a IED. Pray you enjoy your retirement to its fullest n retirement that ALL WOMEN are the same when good times end. I was married for 25yrs to a sweetheart from heaven. But once I had problems, she was gone n I was wayyy too nice. I'm retired also, but by force n noone will hire you with a bad spine n TBI even though I am ok most days head wise. lol. Little bit kooky at times, but that's me now. Enjoy your time, as we are being sleep walking towards nuclear war imho.
@@tyclark8162 Thank you Ty for your kind words. As a veteran my heart bleeds for you my brother. I was in the Navy back in the early 80’s so I served during so called peace time. I never had to deal with a cowardly enemy that had to use IED’s as a last resort of a fractured military. I can only hope that you can get some help through the VA but we both know the likelihood of that happening. I can only wish you good Fortune, happiness and better health in the future.
Respect bro! It takes a lot of courage to admit one's wrongs. Just remember, you never fail until you give up and as long as you learned from your experience then you have won. I wish you well in whatever you do!
I've been in trucking for 44 years now and never has it occurred to me to expand because I always remembered the advice given to me by an old timer many years ago. You can control to an extent the performance of one truck when you are the driver ( one truck one headache multiple trucks means a lot of headaches and sleepless nights) stress will kill you.
Sold the business in 2000, trucks, tools, parts and everything. Walked away debt free with cash in hand. Felt empty and defeated, but the damage to my health was already done. It took me years to recover.
The goal though, is to make it a well oiled machine, with good employees and then you have less and less to worry about on the trucking side of things. Just gotta have good employees and treat them well
With your sheep attitude, there would be no small businesses. All there would be is mega fleets and sheep piss juggers. Not everyone has the balls to lead.
Exactly what happen to me. I grew from just myself and truck into many drivers & trucks. It was less stress when it was just me. Fast forward to today & the economy in freight. I am closing shop .
You have executed a stop loss which is golden…… no need to feel bad, apologize, or explain to anyone. And as always… when one door closes another opens. I personally have learned to let go of things and open my hands for what is next. We all thank you for the content!
Alex was my inspiration for getting into hotshotting. As an owner operator he was 100% there for me - luckily any breakdowns I had were close by but i know even if i were 1500 miles away he'd find a way to bail me out! Don't think I'd work for anyone else, thanks for everything Alex, my best to you and the fam.
I feel your pain Alex. I had to shut down my trucking bussiness over 20 years ago. I had a nice fleet and had to let go of all my drivers. Insurance was one of the reasons why I had to shut it down, Seems like all a scam if you ask me. Never put a claim in but the rates kept going up and up. It was a very sad day when I had to call all my drivers and ask them to return the trucks and give them there last pay check. Some of them had been with me for years. Keep your head up it will get better.
Yup sad part about insurance is it doesn't just go off your driving record. It goes off all drivers. Which I've never understood. But we should've known insurance premiums would go up after 2 billion in damages in 2020 alone.
I have to give Alex much respect to do what I am scared to death. Going into a trucking business with all the pitfalls. Alex, you will rise again keep your head up.
Alex what you just said in your video about insurance, fuel prices ect. Is exactly what happened to my trucking company in 2008. You are young and you will succeed at anything buddy you stand strong and bounce back from this nightmare economy. I will be following your next adventure your exciting to watch.
Hate to see you go. Thank you for everything that you’ve done for the trucking industry. I’ve been driving for 6 years and been an owner operator hotshot for 3. I couldn’t have done it without your website. The first company closed and left me stranded in Nevada. I immediately listed my truck on your website had a new job in an hour and that company turned out to be awesome. So thank you for that. I’ve been preaching a recession this whole year and some people still think I’m crazy. Fuel is killing us and the brokers either don’t get it or don’t care. Best of luck to you.
Alex, You will do fine in life, don’t let this get you down. I have been in business for myself for the last 40 years and have had major setbacks and I can honestly say that I became a stronger and smarter leader through those experiences. Attitude and optimism are the most important things to have when down. My advice would be don’t worry about the gross sales, a 5-million-dollar gross sales in business with no net is worse then a million with a net of 20%. Gross sales mean nothing, IMHO. Building a business is like building a home, you need a strong foundation first. Keep positive and on to the next challenge
I appreciate your honesty and your viewpoint in this video, also that you still seem to be commenting on this video after 2 years. That is awesome. You basically built your entire business on rental equipment, is that right? Presumably, if you owned (outright, no payment) a truck and a trailer you could have continued on and just scaled back? I never understood the reasoning behind hotshotting, because it seems like (to me at least) you have to go through all the same hoops (insurance, HOS, logs, etc...) as you would with an HD truck, so might as well just do that. I understand the appeal of not needing a CDL, but I paid $2000 and got mine in 2 days start to finish. Not a big deal.
Thanks for the kind words. A few years back some youtube video i watched said something along the lines of "you don't have to remember what you said in your videos as long as you always say the truth." That's why honesty is the best policy. As for trucking & business. Naturally, hindsight is 20/20 and my knowledge about the industry is deeper now than before. That being said, used vs new vs leased is an old debate in trucking. The correct answer to that debate is what are the numbers and do they work for your company. It's easy to say that "my business was built on rental equipment" and owning outright is better but the reality is I had 5 company hotshot setups. To keep the numbers simple let's say that's $100,000 for each setup (70k truck, 20k trailer, 10k misc) That means I'd need to have $500,000 in cash. I do not have 500k cash, and even if i did, I think it would be unwise to spend it all on depreciating equipment. Instead of looking at something in dollars, it's better to look at it as a percentage. my rentals cost me about 20% of gross revenue. A paid off truck usually means an older truck. Even though there's no monthly payment, the cost will still be around 20% because of maintenance, towing and downtime / opportunity costs. Every new truck becomes a used truck, and they all breakdown and need maintenance. As for hotshot not making sense, i kinda have my foot in both camps. On one hand non cdl regs are confusing and state dependent, it's harder to find freight and equipment longevity is a concern. On the other hand semi trucks are going for $2/mile just like hotshots now a days, which one do you think is cheaper to run? which one can you do your own maintenance on? which one do you think is easier to finance? This is why hotshot will never cease to exist. It is a tough freight market right now and hopefully that improves for everyones sake.
I've enjoyed the ride and appreciate being allowed to tag along. I went broke twice before I finally started my plumbing company and found something that worked for me. I've been through a few recessions along the way but the one in 1986 cost me dearly and drove me out of the oilfield. Welding was always my first love and I still have the skills but the oilfield was too volatile for me after shutting down and taking everybody I know and love down with it. The plumbing business was even more lucrative and much safer, financially. I'll retire at the end of this year at age 69 and am still healthy enough to enjoy it. You'll find something that works. There is no shame in failure, not once you can man up and admit it. With your work ethic, there's no doubt that you'll be a millionaire long before you retire. And only a fool will be unwilling to hitch their wagon to yours. I look forward to your next venture. Good luck!
I remember I saw you one day in San Diego you only had your hotshot you have expanded your business but sometimes expanding is not that good you can't control other people safety maybe that's why the insurance doble my insurance actually when down since it's only me on my semitruck I can always control my self but you never know until you try hopefully you get this behind you it has happened yo me in other parts of life but my prayers
This is where the insurance & registration game comes in where you pull trucks and pay registration monthly rather than full time trucks and insurance..take the time to look into this plz it will save tons of money monthly when trucks work and if they sit then they don’t cost money...gentry & sons is a good business man and walks the line to prove it’s possible shout it to him and mad respect good luck on whatever you do learn and do better play the game don’t become the game 💪👍
As a business owner in this industry, this post hit so close to home with me. Just had to let two of my trucks go and layoff two drivers. The one thing that scares me so much about this business is being so reliant on others and not being able to set your own prices, like you said. I've called and emailed so many places looking for direct freight and still have had no luck. Thankfully the broker we run loads for will be able to keep my other two trucks running every day. But our situations are so similar. I'm 32, this is my first business, this is my first recession. In 08 when it hit, I was a freshman in college that waited tables so it didn't effect me at all really. Praying for you brother that you keep your head up and keep persevering. I thought I was a failure too, but having a good support system behind you really helps with those feelings. Wishing all the best for you buddy!
Been hot shotting for a year now after getting my bachelors business degree. After that year, I have discovered that yes this is not ideal for a large business scale. It’s rough explaining, like you said, not having control of some of your rates, my insurance went up 700$ for my one truck and trailer with no accidents and minor inspection hits, and fuel is just down right horrendous and this is just one truck. I can’t imagine the numbers at 17. I have been staying local as much as possible to save on fuel, and be home and that seems to be the best even if I don’t gross as much
I agree. Your one truck is manageable but it's still fucking difficult. He had 17. He had way too many expenses. Be careful with how you spend your money. I've made quite a few mistakes myself so now I'm cleaning up the mess i made to stay afloat
Thanks for all of the great videos and advice. I watched an awful lot of Tow Piglet videos before I started my own hot shot business. You lasted a lot longer than I did! You're right. Something has to change. I wish you the best in whatever is next.
Daaam this hurts to watch. But I'm glad you've always kept it real since day one. Always speaking the truth and keeping us informed. Thank you Alex. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Even the sad ones like this one
Thanks for all the knowledge over the years my guy. You are definitely stand up and top dog in my book. I wish you and your family well. Stay motivated 💪 💯
I've always enjoyed your videos and perspective, and this is a real bummer for you - but I completely get it Alex. I'm a commercial fisherman in Alaska, and we have many of the same issues. The main ones I deal with in my business are a lack of reliable manpower to work the deck, not being in control of our costs (fuel a huge hit this year), and having to take what prices are being offered at the dock, no no real control there. The cost to buy in to our industry is huge - my 50 year old, 47' long steel boat would be about $350-$400K on the market right now, and I burn through $25-$40k a year just keeping it maintained. Then there is the amount of money I have sunk into limited-entry permits is eye popping - as it sits I have roughly $150k worth of paper in my folder that allows me to go fishing. That isn't an annual expense, but part of the buy-in to do it, since we have to buy our limited-entry permits from other fishermen getting out of the business or retiring. One of the only ways I can stay in the business is belonging to my insurance pools. Open market insurance for old boats like mine is getting almost impossible to find, and our industry's economics doesn't support the building of new vessels. For commercial trolling, the average age of the boats in the fleet is getting up to 75 years old, and a majority of them are wooden vessels. Insurance companies don't like that at all... so there are a few insurance pools that I've bought into. The basically require 5 people already in the pool to vouch for you to join, which helps keep the high-risk people and poorly maintained boats out of the pools. For "hull and machinery", which is basically full coverage less liability, I paid 20% of the total value of my boat into the pool over 5 years to be vested, so roughly $15K a year for 5 years. For liability, I paid about $12k a year for 5 years, with my crew costing me an additional $750 per month per head. The kicker is that once I'm all paid in over those years, I'm vested. I don't have a major insurance bill unless someone in our pool sinks a boat or a crewmember gets really hurt. The interest in the capital in the pool pays for all the small claims and administration of the pool, and when I retire out I get my initial capital investment back out at the same rate I paid into it. That will come out as income when I retire, so my tax rate will be pretty low. Maybe there is a way you can crack the insurance nut for future drivers with this model? Fair winds and following seas, Capt. Chris Hanson
It takes huge balls to start your own business and even bigger balls to start a trucking business and hire on drivers. I wish you well in your new chapter going forward. Keep your head high. You have the self motivation to do great in whatever you decide to do next
My mind is blown right now. I’ve been with you since you first started making videos. Always looked forward to the next episode. You are part of the reason I’m in the business right now. Hope you figure things out and bounce back. Good luck to you and your family.
Alex, I learned a lot about the industry from your videos over the past few years. It takes a great person to know when to fold. I hope you'll be back in an even better position. Thanks for your knowledge and best of luck.
Well damn! I hate insurance companies because they have so much power over us! Especially the power to put us out of business. And with the too bad this is how it is attitude they give you after being their loyal customer for years and years, I’m surprised many are still in business. You are not a failure, buddy! I’ve watched all of your videos and always came away amazed at your energy and drive. Hang in there brother! You are an inspiration to many!
I've followed you for a long time man and I'm sorry for you losing your business. I think truthfully in watching I believe you tried to grow to quick to fast, should have stayed with the two or 3 trucks a growed slowly!! Best of luck buddy!!
Your the main reason I got back into this business. I remember writing you on Instagram getting advice for a fuel card and factoring. I hate to see this happen. We need to stand up to this insurance companies and brokers and get the money we deserve.
Yesssssssssssssssssssss these insurance companies are horrible to charge so much! When there is a fail in the system to keep America running because of corporate greed.....perhaps then, someone will step in and put a stop to this disgusting gouging!!
Dealing with brokers also that are taking a large portion of the profit is hurting also. Giving out loads at 1.32 a ml. And not worry about your bills or business, truck repairs etc it's a. Monopoly.. Load board prices ridiculously high for single drivers as well.
Alex, I have my trucking company because you were an inspiration and I have learned a lot from you . All the processes and steps to open a company. wish you all the best my friend!!!
So sorry to hear this Alex, I've been following you for years and whatever it is you choose to do, I will continue to support you through your UA-cam channel! Stay strong brotha!
Alex, you have played a major role in the hotshot industry through your UA-cam channel. These events were out of your control, don't be too hard on yourself. I look forward to seeing what your new endeavor is. I'm sure you have many drivers who are thankful to have had the opportunity to work with you. 💜
Man this was just a stepping stone in your life. Bigger and better things to come. Enjoyed the journey. Your inspirational. You lay it out there. Good bad and the ugly. Good honest guy. God Bless.
This is the state of the economy now and trucking has become very volatile. I started my trucking company 2 years with a lot of help from you and rewatching all of your videos. This truly saddens me but you’re a smart guy I know you will be ok. If there is anything I can do please let me know you have a lot of support here.
I’d like to say big shot out to your wife. Behind every ambitious man is a Great Woman who will support your endeavors aside from being a wife, and the mother of your children. I learned the Hotshot shot business during the early days of Covid watching UA-cam videos and started my business and MC . I’ve closed the business and sold off the equipment and survived the dark days that ensued. I’ve met a lot of friendly fellow truckers and learned more than I could ever express in words. There is a lot great truckers out there that share their knowledge all the time, and I thank them and often think about all that helped me when I’m at truck stop or rest area. You have a lot of talent and knowledge Alex and at this point it’s about pivoting utilize the positive benefits of your experience a lot of people were and still are inspired by your experience and videos. Stay driven and keep the faith you’ll surprise yourself. Thank you for the videos and knowledge!
Hey Alex I’ve been keeping up with you for a couple of years now and let me say something man, I honestly believe your drive you have as a business man will keep you and your family well. You did not fail at this, you did better than most people ever do in a lifetime. Something tell me this won’t be the last time we here about you out here in the trucking industry but for sure right now I can definitely agree with you that software might be the way to go, best of luck in the future I wish nothing but the best for you and your family and thank you for all the great advice you gave to us all.
It is absolutely insane that there is so little control over rates and how insurance companies can shut you down at will. I was too young to know what it was like back before deregulation but from what I understand, that was what made trucking start down this path. You’ll do great in life. You’ve got a lot to be proud of.
Deregulation killed/helped the trucking industry as a whole. Some people will say Unions are bad, but they are there to protect the employees from corrupt employers that will fire you for nothing.
Drivers and owners have never been in control of rates, unless you haul directly for someone. What the are in control of is how much it cost to run their business, and from the sound of it, this guy was hemorrhaging money.
Alex you have nothing to worry about. With your drive, attitude, and lessons learned from this will propel you forward. You are a hustler and you will move onto something better
Once you get into fleet management or the level of operations you’re running, hiring a financial analyst is very crucial to maintaining the seasonality of any business. Cash flow management, access to credit, etc. A financial analyst with experience in trucking could at least guide you on financial operations
I agree💯, but I believe you need to stay in transportation. There is nothing wrong with starting over. You provided good content in your vlogs. God Bless you and your family.🙏😁
As an owner operator of 1 truck pulling a dry van since 2012 running the 48 and Canada, I too pull the plug for the same reasons in 2017. Even though my revenue was around 248,000.00 year after year the cost of doing business was cutting deep into my profit margin. Good luck to you and your new venture. Sorry to see you go.
Hey brother it has been a definite pleasure being leased on with y'all! Going to be so hard trying to find somewhere else that can compare bro. It's been a damn good experience all the way through love and respect to you and your family bro keep grinding stay in touch !
None of this was your failure. We are experiencing an unprecedented geopolitical and economic situation with ripples from the pandemic still clearing. I’m amazed at your thoughtfulness, work ethic and unrelenting positive attitude every time I watch your videos. I’m 37 and I haven’t accomplished half of what you’ve done. You will succeed over and again at anything. My dad ran a successful consulting business and always told me that the people you see that are the most successful have not reached there easily. This is the struggle that will be the foundation on which your greater success will stand. Don’t question your decisions, you made the right ones. Major well established businesses are going to struggle to deal with soaring inflation.
I just can’t believe this Alex. I was just telling my wife how you went from 500k to 1 mil and then projected to do 4 mil this year. I’ve been following you since you had less than 50k subs and I would have never guessed it would have gone this way. I know that with your drive, energy and positive attitude that you will succeed at your next adventure. I’ll be here to watch your videos 👍🏼. I have one question, which I don’t think you answered in your video, did the insurance co say why such a big increase? Thanks for keeping us informed!!!
Alex, you weee the reason I entered into hotshot….you are the true inspiration for many many people…so plz do not loose hope cos that will be the biggest failure for you…take this as learning curve that will soar you much higher in future…you took a very hard decision but then that’s what life teaches us….you have so many years left to multiply your wealth and health….All the best wishes man…God bless you!!!!
Man eversince following you for years now , you came to a change for the better for yourself. You came a long way. Hope the best for you and your family. And I hope you succeed in your own big company coming soon. .keep on doing what your doing. Stay safe trucking .
I started in February and I'm on the verge of shutting down. It's been tough. I'm worried sick about losing my business with one trailer and pickup and you just had to let people go and liquidize multiple pieces of equipment. Sorry man
Hey Man. I remember the days when you first started some years ago about back in 2018. I am so so sad to see you have to close your business, but from your explanation, you genuinely showed you did everything in your power to do the best you could do. I wish you all the best luck for the future bro.
Really sad to watch this video. You have accomplished a lot for being 29 years old. Your company didn’t fail because of bad management, I was about to open a food trailer and had to shut down before I opened because of gas prices running the generator. I have been watching your videos for 2 years now. You inspired me to go get my CDL, hazmat and tanker endorsement. You have been very motivating and inspiring. Turn that chewing glass into chewing gum. Get back on the saddle when time permits. I still think, you are successful. Shutting down wasn’t part of it but better things can come from this. Fuel and insurance are terrible. Like I said, you have accomplished a lot at your age, use that experience and don’t give up! Take care!
@@Ariels_Mindset Robert is the same guy that said Alex didn't fail because of bad management. Alex most certainly failed due to bad management. Robert wouldn't have made it a week in the "food trailer" business if his biggest concern was the cost of gas to run his generator.
I understand where you are coming from. I closed up my auto transport after the insurance went up 162%, even though I had no accidents, no failed inspections, no tickets, no OOS and maintained a very good CVS score. I miss being on the road and the travel, but I can see trucking is only going to get worse as time goes on. With all of the senior drivers leaving due to the continuous rule changes and the influx of new drivers that have no experience and so little training, the rule changes are only going to get worse. Best if luck in what ever you do now.
Most senior drivers are leaving cause one they are up in years. I myself been driving before cdls came out and we are a dying breed. Yes the truck industry not the same. But the stories that were told for decades makes most kids not wanna truck because of the price and pay versus time invested..
Best of luck Alex. When I started hotshotting you were one of the very few people doing youtube videos. A huge inspiration and your videos taught me how to start back my business. God Bless
I got into hot shot because of you..had an accident lost every single thing. Now I'm just waiting for my numbers to start again..giving up isn't part off you..don't let it be a resident in your life..
The way you ended the video, talking about the scalability and lack of control in trucking; I feel the same exact way. I owned my own truck for 5 years, and you're absolutely correct. Truck ownership left me bitter with the industry. Ultimately it's a gamble. Some people get lucky, and others don't. In the world of business, you cannot rely on luck, but essentially that's how trucking works. You're playing with fire, you have limited control, and everyone is in your pockets trying to get their share. This might be a failure of a trucking business, but it's a door opening to new possibilities. Focus on a career/business path that will give you full control of your revenue. A business that isn't choked out by regulation and greed. Best of luck man.
Damn dude. Sorry to see this. Honestly did a double take when I saw the video title. I drove for 10 years and absolutely started hating the trucking industry. I got out of it and am happier for it. All the best to you and your family and I can’t wait to see what you do next. Always got great content from your videos
Absolutely right Alex.. I have a small Truckin company here in Texas 17 trucks like you… Insurance is a TOTAL Robbery bro!!! We don’t do load board loads we have our direct customers that’s what keeps us alive! Good luck bud!!!
Thanks for the vid and transparency. I’m doing likewise. It’s ideal to cut loses then prolong the inevitable. I agree, it depends on what the Owner’s financial objective is. I prefer to be in control of what I charge otherwise it’s almost like being a Contractor in my opinion. Things won’t go on too much longer w/o government cracking down on the transportation industry and that won’t happen unless owners/truckers ban together to oppose the injustice.
Please keep in mind that you are NOT a failure. Far from it Alex.. I’ve watched your videos for some time now & u seemed to be 100% real all the time. Anyone who had the pleasure working for you will b heart broken simply because your a good man! Hang in there. Like you said you learned so much in the past 4 years that you have more skills. God bless
Alex, I run about 30 trucks under my MC and DOT number I charge 10% to run under me. I use progressive insurance. I don't insure the trucks that run under me I only insure the load and trailer. Which keeps my monthly insurance around $6500 I gross around $60k a month and keep my O/O moving.
I’ve managed major communication contracts in upper management for over a decade before starting my hotshot journey. IMO you scaled up too fast. Along with ur examples of money management. I may not agree with you on alot of things but I wish you the best Alex. I want every man to succeed and I have no doubt u will !
Yep. All the big carriers been in business for 50 years plus years. But also different times back then. i think new companies don't have a chance to grow unless a billionaire is backing the operation.
Alex, you're on the cutting edge... not a good one mind you. It's the smaller operations that fall first. Though 17 trucks in this amount of time was darn good. The point is the world economy is in deep do-do. Well on its way to total collapse. When the trucks stop rolling the violence gets out of control in a hurry. Your company is one of the early ones and by far not the only one. It's an unsustainable world. I don't know where the world will be in 20 years, only that at age 71 now, likely I won't be here. Good luck. I'm afraidlike so many, you're in for a rough ride.
This is why you focus on calling shippers direct and creating dedicated routes. This has been our focus so you control your rate. Lock it in. Screw brokers. Direct relationships is where it’s at. Get those relationships and grow accordingly. Start your own broker company as well and be the broker as well. That’s the only way to make a profit for real
@@Mr_Clean yea not much you can do there. I was just saying when you have dedicated relationships or contracts then you know what steady revenue you have coming in. This is BS of insurance to do that shit.
Alex I can say from my experience maybe you expanded maybe just a little too quickly but, that being said I admire you for being brave enough to go for it. I also once ran my own business. And it was doing ok for awhile until unforeseen seen and frankly unprecedented things beyond my control forced me to close. And what we are currently witnessing is nothing short of unprecedented if not unforeseen. So stay strong retreat and regroup. And when things calm down maybe things will recover and you can try again
Hey Man Trust you're not the only one. A lot of people aren't talking about the ugly details and sharing their experiences. So thanks for being vulnerable and transparent and selfless enough to tell the ugly truth.
It’s sounding like trying to scale trucking at the SPOT market is not easily scalable to the $5-10 M level, but perhaps a slow and steady pace in the DIRECT market might be possible. You are saying I believe that around 70% of your business was through brokers, so that seems to be key. As for the insurance, it would be interesting to dig in a bit deeper into the reasons behind the increase, but I wonder if a slower growth rate of the top line would have made any difference. You said you were renewing 17 trucks I think, but how many did you start with this year? If it was a much smaller number, then maybe the increase in the business played a role. I am a total newbie to trucking, but I do have a business degree and I am listening to others in the field say that loadboards are best used for back hauls. There is no getting around growing customers organically and selling them on your service so that you can get the rate you need and even go to them for fuel surcharges. Just my $.02. By the way, you channel was the very first one I checked out when I became interested in trucking and I really appreciated your passion and willingness to share. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you!
You fail at 100% of chances you don't take.. you took a huge leap and have brought us along the whole time. You have also showed us all the ways. I'm an og with you and am excited for your next adventure
Seems the governing authority wants larger corps to sustain. I feel your pain. We work our tails off to get very little reward. Insurance, brokers, DOT, fuel prices and rates have a lot of us on the brink of throwing in the towel. Quitting isn't a good term to use. Let's learn from the experience and keep pushing
Couple things. 1. I know exactly where you are. I’m 58… I started a residential construction business on a hip a prayer and a shoe string budget in 2000. In 2006 I was multi million building as many as 8-10 at a time… survived the price hits drone Hurricane Katrina in2005 then the housing bubble and recession hit!!! It is lit chewing glass and swallowing it. By that time we had two offices , we were buying and selling properties with he agents doing mortgages and building… all gone in twelve months 2008. …. 2… You’re a rock star and what ever you do you will succeed!!! I wish you the very best
100% spot on with your thoughts and kudos for your foresight. Business sometimes have unfortunate consequences I'm sure it's tough. Elections have consequences and the victims will suffer TREMENDOUSLY! FJB
Dude u still my hero in the trucking game. U have accomplished all of my dreams. I got into hotshot because of you and Dave. I ve grown to 3 drivers and with all your hacks helped me do it. You were the cheat code for alot of that were new to thr industry. Well hats off to you. Keep up with posts on your new endeavors. Your followers would still love to see you accede at whatever you do, but I'm sure trucking is in your blood by now. I'm sure you'll find a way to get back out here. Good luck. You are still the GOAT in my book
TOW PIGLET YOU INSPIRED ME!! Thank you for everything you have done! Your genius will take you far… just the times we are living in has charted our destination another way. Thank YOU again for all you have done!
I was only in hotshot for several months; insurance was my biggest problem from before beginning to long after the end. I crashed my truck, but my insurance crashed my company.
Man you are the one that makes me want to do Hotshot Trucking and just ditch my 7/5 job. But dang I know it’s tough in 2022. I’ll still be here and watching your Content and supporting you with any endeavors you trying to get into . Bless up my guy
This hits home and it hurts to watch this. I agree 100!. Im running two semis and 53' dryvans under my own authority in SC. Clean driving records and older equipment both trucks are 94 freightliners and we're at 45K a year with progressive. For the past 6 months with fuel rising and rates dropping we've been in the red every week for some time. Good luck Alex. You inspired lots of us and it pains me because we're almost at this point.
Yes , may have to park the fleet and wait it out. Because these diesel prices are crazy af, seriously out of hand. Then you have to deal with dot on top of all the other foolery
I literally have a video I’m waiting to put live on my channel talking about exactly that. How we are the only industry that doesn’t set our own rates and that includes things like tonu. Sorry to hear about this man. I learned a lot about hot shot from you. I own a Pete, but I enjoy learning about all facets of our industry. I wish you the best of luck.
No it's not we have a trucking company and have a farm we don't get to decide what we pay for inputs or what we get paid for our products.... just saying g
Hey Alex so sorry to hear that you have to close your business down. From the first day we saw your videos we were very impressed with your honesty and enthusiasm. Your spirit is very uplifting. Please remember you are not a failure. Life is full of experiences for us to learn and grow and you will. We can’t wait to follow you in your next adventure. Thank you for sharing with us.
In my opinion what I learned from having a trucking authority is that it only makes sense if you have your own customers. But like you said it’ll take a very long time to build up that customer base. I also feel that the days of building up a trucking company from 1 truck to a fleet is over with. The powers that be did very well in creating obstacles to make maintaining a fleet of trucks nearly impossible to stay profitable over time.
It's not just trucking it's the same in every industry.. At every angle, there has been a war waged against small businesses by large corporations with the politicians in their pockets to make the regulations they want to stifle out the little guy.
👍 Just happened to find your video randomly when searching for something else ... I've been in business providing concrete ballast block to commercial solar installers in 17 states, and so have used a ton of independent, regional & large national trucking outfits over the past decade. Honestly, I don't know how most truckers stay in business, and I've been saying that BEFORE we got hit with ridiculous gas prices and a whacked economy. I wish you all the best, as others have said you've got passion and honesty, you'll rebound one way or another. I've had to learn many of the valuable lessons in business the hard way, there's always some of that for all business owners. My best to you - It's much tougher for ALL business owners in general now than it was say, 10 years ago or more... Way too much regulation, taxes, in many cases unfair competition from the bigs, etc. Be well...
Totally agree with everything you said.
He really is a great guy as far as his work ethic.
Love this, i learned a lot just reading this comment!
Agreed, love his drive, but from day one he needed for someone else to be in charge of the money. Some one with the power to say NO! With 17 trucks out there he needed a minimum of a $1 million cash oh shit fund for surprises.
One thing I'm curious about, remember the guy that invested $150,000 in his business? Did he see penny one from that?
You did not fail. You help 1000's of people, you inspired so many of us by allowing us to watch your journey, however smooth or bumpy it was. So many of us have found a way to make a living on our own terms because of you...... keep your head up and keep us up to date on your next adventure! Much respect Alex!
Thanks Scott
We signed on with Alex in November. I found Alex to be 100% genuine and honest. Any good feelings I have about this industry are firmly rooted in this guy and his character and integrity. In six months we were never left without a load, never deadheaded more than 200 miles and money was in the bank EVERY Friday morning.
I have absolutely zero regrets signing on with Alex and TowPiglet, it has been a wonderful adventure and an excellent learning platform
If a guy of his intelligence and integrity can be put under by this industry I don't hold much hope for anyone else under same conditions as exist right now in this market and economy to thrive or succeed
Alex it has been a pleasure getting to know you and I cant tell you how much we appreciate your faith and patience with us.

How much % he was taking from you?

Bro...ive never in my 31 years on this earth heard the amount of employees talk positive about their boss like this especially in trucking. This is my first time seeing one of your videos but that speaks volumes and ive never even met you. good shit bro
Alex you were the best boss a driver could ask for!!! No hard feelings it's part of life bud.
Awesome
My insurance dropped 25%. that helps.
@@mrtee3477 my insurance dropped a little bit I know it’s going back up next year.
Trump warned everyone what would happen if potato head Biden got in office I hope everyone effected by what is going on in the United States voted for potato head Biden your getting what you voted for
You’re not a failure. You made a prudent decision for your business. As an entrepreneur it’s on to the next thing for you. 👍
Thanks
I have admired you since watching you when you had just your truck. Your work ethic and integrity are to be commended.
You have learned invaluable lessons that no college could ever teach you. Good luck buddy. You got this!
Being a small business owner (operating honestly and ethically) today is a very scary position. I feel you. Thank you for sharing your story.
You can't do it honestly, and you're able to it's just a matter of time before a agency comes messing with you or your industry 😤

Amen to that.
I went through this in 2007. I feel the pain but went solo and never looked back. Thanks for what you have done to inform people in any business
I also went through it in 07 and didn’t worked out for me either
I'm right with you.
This was such a kind response!!! I love it!! I am so sorry that corporate greed failed so many families that he was helping by hiring them!!
YEP - Insurance is a scam - 100%
@@rs-vl2im Possibly the biggest scam in the history of civilization.
HE's not starting a business ,he' shutting down !
@@stevewhyte8476 He is shutting down then starting something else.
A few years back some youtube video i watched said something along the lines of "you don't have to remember what you said in your videos as long as you always say the truth."
That's why honesty is the best policy.
To keep the numbers simple let's say that's $100,000 for each setup (70k truck, 20k trailer, 10k misc)
That means I'd need to have $500,000 in cash.
On the other hand semi trucks are going for $2/mile just like hotshots now a days,
which one do you think is cheaper to run?
which one can you do your own maintenance on?
which one do you think is easier to finance?
Good luck!
Same boat with petro/chem. To hell with that volatile field of work. Contract QA/QC from 2007 to late summer of 2021. Im done with it.
Man I hate to see this!! If there’s anything we can do to help reach out. It looks like you really put a lot of effort into your company

Gentry and sons, you guys are awesome too.

What would that change?
Alex,
I have my trucking company because you were an inspiration and I have learned a lot from you .

Thanks for not sugar coating your journey. Mad respect it's ridiculous out here. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
@@fishin4bogey It also sound like he didn’t have a solid account ,too much broker freight.I have to say bad drivers was a major factor too.

Once you get into fleet management or the level of operations you’re running, hiring a financial analyst is very crucial to maintaining the seasonality of any business.
Take care!

I’ve watched your videos for some time now & u seemed to be 100% real all the time. sorry for your loss. keep moving forward. looking forward to your next adventure!

And what we are currently witnessing is nothing short of unprecedented if not unforeseen. So stay strong retreat and regroup. And when things calm down maybe things will recover and you can try again
Hey Man
Trust you're not the only one.

Be well...
