    This was long ago when my son was still a little toddler. We were in line at a grocery store buying food. When the cashier rang out the total I realized I didn't have enough money on me to pay for all the groceries so asked the cashier I need to return some of the stuff. The man behind me said to the cashier, "just keep them there. I'll pay for them." I was surprised and thanked him, then asked him for his name & contact info so I can return his favor later on. The man just said, "you don't have to give anything back to me. I've had someone do the same thing for me before. Just pass it along to the next person."

    Honestly, anyone who says ‘money does not equal happiness’ has never struggled to pay bills on time, or put food on the table every day.
    Money is the root to all my problems, because I’m dirt poor. Any rich person who complains that they aren’t happy, should trade places with me or any other person who is struggling without money, then you can complain.

      well to some degree, unless u have an incurable disease or something, money can ensure your physical or even mental health. I^d rather say that besides love, money is everything else. If I had enough money I would buy a house for me and all my loved ones, make sure they are okay, and then maybe buy luxuries like clothing that helps me feel good about myself or express myself, pursue my hobbies and interests etc. I would be very careful about not spending it on things that are bad for me, or just a waste, you know

      This logic is like saying you didn’t kill someone when you shot them. You simply pulled a trigger but the bullet is the one that killed the person. Which is obviously a horrid defense. Whether you are directly what impacted someone or not, if you are the cause of a chain reaction you made the end result of that chain reaction happen. Even if your mom getting medical treatment was the result of medicine and good doctors, the money y’all had is the reason she would be able to get help. Making money the indirect cause of her living because without treatment she wouldn’t be here. So that money bought you happiness (unless your relationship with your mother isn’t the best).
      Be careful with blanket statements in life. There’s almost always situations that prove the contrary.

By eliminating that choice, you isolate for only the act of giving and pocketing. Learn about research methods and statistics - it is interesting and very good for building critical thinking skills.

    • @aaronpcjb
      @aaronpcjb 8 років тому +2

      +Ash T +Ash T The purpose of an experiment is to answer one question only; the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis in this experiment is: "spending more money on others will increases ones happiness". So, Independent Variable = 'Money Spent'; Dependent Variable = 'Happiness Increase'. Now, he said money spent stops increasing happiness after a period. If this was graphed, you'd see a rise in happiness after the first few dollars, then a constant level from then on. This is perfectly reasonable.
      However, the problem lies with his Controlled Variables. He doesn't tell us enough. We don't know if he measured the wealth of the individual subjects, nor do we know if he used the same age/gender groups in each country. These are all things that could have affected the conclusion. Before you instruct people to do research, take heed of your own advice.

    This speech just touched my heart.
    I am an alturist. I am always focused on making more money, but people often mistake my intention. I don't seek luxury (although like everyone else I too am attracted to luxurious lifesyle), I live in extreme frugality and I am comfortable with it. I earn money to give away to the less fortune of us, and that brother is true happiness. My first glimpse at this was when I donated my last 100 rupees to a beggar instead of eating a burger. Sure, I still missed the burger but man, the smile of that beggar more than made up for that.
    From then on, I have made it my life goal to earn as much money as I possibly can, then give them away.

    Money can buy temporary comfort and joy in buying time and getting you the materials things you want. It pays you the comfort of being able to pay your bills and not have to worry about where your next meal is coming. But money can't buy inter happiness as far as being overall happy. That really comes more within yourself.

BUT, I struggle to make ends meet constantly. Money is literally the only thing lacking in my life. If I was wealthy my life would seriously be complete.

    One sentiment I have that differs from many comments is I spent a fair amount of money on gifts for a friend I'd known for several years. Just because. No special occasion, I'm not the type to do that easily or often; and I'm not the type that buys ppl's companionship. She was a flawed friend, but I was looking past it when personal hardships got her down, and I comforted her without question. I bought the gifts for her, then maybe 8mths later she cut all ties with me over sentiments I vented on something that had nothing to do with her and related to my own frustrations, but she resonated with. She selfishly & childishly made it about her. She was a very subpar friend, and while I felt good back then for getting her the personal gifts, I'm angered about investing in a friendship that gave no ROE, and I no longer spending anything on "friends". No matter how close we become.

    People say money doesn’t buy happiness because they don’t wanna accept the fact that they’re sad. And they’re sad because they’re poor. My view of true happiness is getting a Can-Am Maverick, a Honda Civic, or maybe even a Tesla or a Ford Truck or a Jeep. What I also think is true happiness is when you get a jet ski and you use that on ocean water. And sure money can’t buy you a wife or children, but it’s what helps your family in your time of need. And when people help you in a tough time where you can’t provide enough money and need help,
    you feel happy when people help you. So yes, money can buy happiness. Money can’t buy you friends either. But using money is a very valuable thing in scenarios where you’re with your family and friends.

    We all were born into a world in which most necessities and worthwhile experiences are withheld from us by oligarchs who use the concept of "money" to make us hamsters run the treadmill we ironically call "life". That however does not mean that we can buy happiness with money. Saying that money can buy happiness is a very pervers way of saying that slavery is good, or that we need money as much as we need water and food. You can't eat money, even when there's nothing else to eat. Therefore money cannot buy happiness. It only unlocks the gates behind which this slavery system hides all the nice and necessary things. As long as we support the idea of money, we will never be free nor happy. But I won't blame anybody for not understanding what I just wrote. It also took me a while to crack the shell because it requires a change in perspective which is difficult to achieve if you're dependent on the very system you're trying to put in question.

    this is one of those things that people will never understand until they have more money than they can spend. a good example i always give is this; have you ever played a video game and entered a cheat code to give you unlimited money in game? if so, you’ve most likely felt an almost instantaneous realisation that the game just feels empty now, you have nothing to work towards and nothing to look forward to. sure you can do all the things you always dreamed of, but people never realise how temporary that feeling is until they’re in the situation. i have struggled financially pretty much my whole life and always believed that money can fix all of my problems. not even a month after i received an enormous sum of money i fell into the most intense depressive state i had ever experienced, and prior to that i had been in psychiatric wards and seen therapists for around a decade and had multiple suicide attempts, it made me feel worse than all of those experiences. and although most people will never believe it the money made things drastically worse. that whole ten years of hardship was always underlined with the fact that i would eventually receive a big sum of money and then my entire life would be fixed. i would have complete peace of mind and be set for a long healthy successful future, and for a couple of weeks i was the happiest i’d ever been, but eventually i sat in my room surrounded by everything i had ever wanted and realised none of it mattered and none of it made me feel any different. money will change everything externally but it can’t fix what’s inside your head. obviously i’m grateful to be in the financial position i’m in but that’s my perspective on money and it’s worth and unfortunately it can only really be understood when you’re in the situation. prior to the money i whole heartedly believed money could always buy happiness and that if i had money i would be far happier, and it took a very unforgiving situation to show me how wrong i really was.

    It's a good thing he shared this for giving is better than receiving. I was unhappy but really people should be content with what people have and not always want more. I'm only saving up for a car but I'm unhappy when I always have a family member asking me to spend money on things in the home when really it's not urgent that it can wait for I bring up an excuse that my point is that every family member has a car and I have to go by some form of public transport without a car which sometimes I don't mind. But at times like these, unhappy people need to make other people happy for if there may be a family tragedy and if there is selfishness then the unhappy selfish person saving up for a car may forever live with regret. I think knowing my car got written off and I only needed to buy a good second hand car of the same kind for they don't make them the same way they use to and knowing it takes time saving up a lot of money for a car, then, avoiding selfishness can be a time of testing. So, money can buy you happiness and wont buy you happiness. I just wish I never laid my eyes on that car in the first place, life would be much happier. You're most probably wondering what car, most certainly not a Bugatti, that's for sure. You know, hes actually right! If I knew I was not spending too much, I'd be happy! Now, there goes my pay rise. Ah! it's nice to be single that if I had a choice I'd probably marry a dog instead for I don't have a wife to say it, I escaped that one just in time. If you have a wife then maybe don't say it but maybe keep it to yourself. Yep! I think so- couple of days, beautiful.

    Money is very important but not everything. We need basic money to function in life. When we wish for things more than our need, that become our want,but our want is endless. You can earn all the money in the world but still feel like you need more and in that case that become greed. I think we need balance of everything in life to be truly happy.

    Money buys happiness, not satisfaction. Remember, avarice is never ending, and not even money can fill it. People often mistook happiness as to having all your desires, no matter how simple or ambitious it is, granted, but it's just a well decorated lie that society planted to everyone's minds. Humans are naturally greedy since the day they were born. So yeah the saying "Money can't buy happiness" is just a conclusion made by people who were never satisfied and find happiness with what they have and was slapped by the hands of reality. In short, it's nothing but self-gratification to keep their ego intact after wasting their life chasing for the unreachable. You will not find happiness if you turn blind on them.

Since she got rich she lost all her friends, and she doesn't know how to make new friends, because she is buying all those expensive gifts for her 'new' friends, but the friendships never last for a long time. There's a flaw in their experiments. $5 or $20 is not much for someone in an affluent country. So, spending it on oneself won't likely make one happier. However, $1000 most probably will. Or even $500. That amount can buy something substantial, e.g. a smart phone, computer, a cruise, many sessions of massage, a few sessions with a sex worker, etc.

    • @GelidGanef
      @GelidGanef 8 років тому

      +humanyoda What you suggest has been studied. Larger amounts of money, or large positive life experiences which are seflishly directed, these tend to make you happy for a little while, say a week or two, and then have no further effect. If someone spent it how you suggest, on short-term services or slightly longer-lived products, they would've quickly spent up the happiness potential in their money with no long-term benefits. If they spent it on someone else, they could remain happier for it for a long time, because they didn't just make someone else happy, they built a relationship that can benefit themselves for a long time as well.
