I've had money and I've been broke. Money is just a tool that makes reaching your destination easier.
Money doesn't deliver you happiness. It can keep you from being unhappy, if you use it well.
Your happiness comes from within, not from external forces. If you are not happy with yourself, you won't be happy with someone else. Happiness is a journey to your higher self, not a ring you capture.

Everything I see from people who minimize, and downsize is that they are happier than people chasing bigger, bigger, and more, more. You will get criticized for being lazy, and unmotivated. That you lack urgency. Not sure why that's a good thing, but it's something I need to get away from, so I moved to a state where things were cheaper, made some good decisions and some not so good ones, but the best thing I've done for myself is downsize, and live a simpler life. At 83, I'm doing ok. Eating plant based, living that simple life, and feeling good.
❤
that's beautiful, that's what I'm working towards as well!
Society is geared towards consuming more and more and the question is what for? What are you consuming and why? Having a good life doesn't mean we have to accumulate, stuff. It does mean we have to be comfortable enough not to worry about meeting our bills and some left over so we can follow our dreams. At your age you've earned the right to live comfortably and live well. Enjoy
I like what you said ❤

Money definitely CAN buy happiness. It allows you to phisically leave behind unhappy conditions, people, places etc. Financial security allows one to fully relax and eliminates 90% of stress from one's life.
But what he is saying is that you have no end to your desire. Money is good to fulfill our needs and not good to create a balloon of desires or expectations which money can never buy. You need to have a noble timeless purpose in life to be happy.
It depends on your job. If you’re in a job you hate but make 6 figures then it doesn’t.
This isnt true. I'm a pretty successful business owner with a high paying career. I've also struggled with depression for over 10 years. As my career became successful, it definitely did not eliminate 90% of my stress in life. I still struggle with depression almost every day. I work long hours, work weekends on a regular basis, and have sacrificed a lot of my social life while working towards my career goals. To make money, you typically have to work long hours in any job.
@@EstellaLynnand if you lose a job what happened? That’s why we must find a timeless noble purpose in which neither you yourself and nor your family members are beneficiary. This will make you happy all the time and you won’t be depressed.
Unfortunately, most of us become so much obsessed with our own inflated ideas of our own needs, desires, longing and ambition to achieve , wealth, power, fame and status that we never use our conceptual quality to search for our real purpose. By definition, desires have no end. We can neither live without desires and nor we can be ever satisfied with desires. When our desires are not fulfilled then the gap between our desires and fulfillment causes frustration & stress . This gap is the root cause that causes our soul to be tired and we get depressed.
Convert your desires into a noble timeless purpose.

Very True. But it's almost impossible to explain to someone who has never had financial freedom that money doesn't equates to happiness. It's a journey that one must experience to understand.
I would say the same for someone who has never experienced the need of money
My huina 1592 rc makes me happy. Internet and my phone. All costing money. You make no sense.
The problem is not if you have money or don't the problem is who ever the he'll even came up with this saying money can't buy happiness those shoes you wanted when you bought them did it not make you happy for that moment when you got them? Or I like even better when they compare it to love like how do you think your going to buy that house or that ring for the one you love, money money money, so yes money buys happiness
Then die without food lol
not unless you smart and can figure that out without having to become rich, which most people never will.
Money for basic needs that will give you freedom from anxiety is necessary. This is called financial freedom but anything more than this is greed and desire which causes us suffering than happiness
“money doesn’t buy u happiness.” says the same guy that bought a yacht yesterday
It won't buy happiness but it will keep you from being homeless 😊
Money is a huge factor to making people happy
but not always
I have a heated toilet seat/bidet after going to Japan in winter. That was the best purchase ever. Under $300 and have had it for almost 4 years already. Still works great.
I have chronic migraine and fibromyalgia....I'm in pain 24hr 365days unless i take expensive painkillers...if I don't have money,i will cry with extreme pain and become unhappy.. in my case, money can buy happiness.... what he is saying, is for super rich n healthy people ...after sometime all luxurious life becomes ordinary for them
I have a friend with fibro and she is also in chronic pain 24/7. We are in the UK where healthcare is free but meds don't work well on that condition. Lady Gaga, also a sufferer, is in constant pain with it. Did you find something that helped your pain?
When i was preg and had v little i noticed the trees and plants around me started producing fruits berries and greens.. seemingly when i would need them. Ive learned how uncanny it is that compared to how much we think we need financially.. humans themselves seem to be able to exist just fine on what nature provides. Maybe its a good exercise to sometimes tune into that. And funny how our bodies and minds are made to exist with nature. And that it sort of just gives us what we need. Pretty miraculous, awesome, and makes u question a whole lot about this other world we live.

This is so true. I live comfortably but I have chronic pain 24 hours a day. With all of my money I'm miserable and can't enjoy the things my money can buy. So in my opinion money can't buy you happiness.
cant pay for healthcare with no money
I dont agree. Healthy important for happiness but this mean not everything. My life an example to this. I am very healthy phisicialy but not happy.
Technically money can buy happiness because you can buy a puppy or kitten and they bring you joy. I can't see my life without my puppies my depression isn't even affecting my life anymore. I'm actually happy
You do not need to buy a puppy. You can adapt one at the shelter

Ok go and make tons of money its very hard to make
But it can bring financial security, pay for Healthcare and buy virtually all our politicians.
It can, but you being depressed. It masks it for only so long. Your sadness is only masked for so long and one day it comes back possible 10 fold. If you’re only sad about being broke, then you’ll def be happier than you were.
And some scientists so they can all push experimental trojan horse marketed as "safe and effective".
not in of itself. Considering it's a purely symbolic and extrinsic value. It is more the money "comes from" prosperity. Like healthcare and politicians. Considering it is a measure of the actuality, less known usage of term "wealth."
This is just marvelous, thanks for sharing TedX
Do what makes you happy and you'll find happiness.
you need money to do that
I'd love to go on a roadtrip and visit all of the national parks in the USA. That will make me very happy. Will you be supplying me the trailer, gas, food and fee admission? Oh wait, I guess we are back to square one. MONEY.
@Underscorejed not to meditate, stretch and walk in nature
This is an understatement happiness is a feeling not a permanent one, you get sad you get mad and you have your good days and bad days all apart of life, at the end of the day money can buy happiness even if it's just for that moment, I hope no one paid for this all he is talking about is ego, about your neighbors grass is greener, hopes and dreams, in the end happiness is a feeling you do what makes you happy,
Actually money gives u happiness by letting u buy things u need for urself and ur family. It can give u name fame comfort. It even gives u satisfaction but heart's satisfaction is a thing which money can't buy for the entire lifetime.
And shopping, shopping and throw away, and contaminating the planet.
But what he is saying is that you have no end to your desire. Money is good to fulfill our needs and not good to create a balloon of desires or expectations which money can never buy. You need to have a noble timeless purpose in life to be happy.
Be content.
You missed the point of the talk. Buying things you NEED and NEED for your family, is living at a level of comfort, not a level of excess. He is talking about excess not bringing increased happiness.
Good point buddy

The word happiness doesn't exist in poverty.
What a wonderful speaker! Yesterday I took a 5$ bus along a scenic PCH all the way from Huntington Beach to San Clemente. I was thinking had I had a billion dollars, instead I would just drop 20 mil, buy a private jet and just go to any destination missing the journey. For five dollars, I had a child-like Disney land like trip. Sometimes constraint and lack of options forces one to be creative and be happy. When I had allowances and saved a precious dollar at the end, I saw that I could buy infinite things from 99 cents store. THATS'S the freedom that somehow lack of money DOES buy. Whereas, modern society who are fattened with gluttony thinks you need to stuff more and more and more to be happy.
Remember, contentment cannot be bought!
FWIW, I wasn't happy yesterday either. I had some deep personal troubling issues so I wanted to get a ride. Thus there is a level to this too! As they say the zen you take to the mountain top is the one you have!

Why are you miserable when you have bigger and faster cars? Depression &anxiety

True happiness cannot be bought and purchased, that's true. That being said it can buy comfort, contentment and pleasure which can lead to happiness. I damn sure know, growing up poor, my parents seemed to smile more when they were able to pay rent, keep the lights on and put a decent meal on the table for their 4 chikdren. I could care less what studies show, what psychiatrists say, psychology and stats say when it comes to life. I think that money can lead to happiness, and love can be purchased by the hour. Ultimately it's up to the individual, not outsiders looking in, on where their happy comes from. If I had the wealth to make the people in my life happy, bring comfort to those suffering from abject poverty, put one kid per state through college that didn't have a chance otherwise that had the potential to be great, to be told that money can't buy happiness is erroneous and downright false, so begging your pardon, I will respectfully agree to disagree.
I can't wait to have my own money so I can tell people money can't buy happiness but for now money will make me okay and happy

Here's what you'll find: people with money usually assert it doesn't buy happiness, and people without any money assert it does. The truth is, the people with money have better perspective because once you have money and realize it isn't actually the answer, you are able to see it more for what it really is. You see it much clearer. Poor people idealize money too much. Just like we tend to idealize many things in life we don't have more then they deserve to be idealized.
This is so true. We often say if I only had X or Y or Z then everything would be better. Then we get Y and Z and realize not much has changed. Money is really just a tool to an end. Yes it does buy happines because it keeps you from certain things. But just like the video said, once you reach a certain lifestyle money won't really amount to much.
People with money say like that because they are polite and don’t want to upset poors, but tell me one of them giving u their money?! Go ask bill gates 1 million and see if he give them to you…its just a facade of politically correct thing to say. Tgere are some honest rich people saying they prefer to be dead than poor so ..
I’m 23, just built a 26x40 shop, and still hate life in this town.
So Basically, Money is not the problem. Problem is the Desire!
"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". But what is happiness? A sense of well-being? Or just your lifestyle enabling your system to produce the right hormones? This is a question that humanity has been grappling with for millennia. The speaker has questioned whether endless pursuit of material acquisitions can lead to "happiness". Yet these are an index of success in most societies. Of course there have been those through the ages and across the world who rebelled against this. A contrarian view is that the drive for human progress predicated on people being unhappy with what they have and wanting ' more and better'? And is unhappiness and discontent the sacrifice needed for 'progress'? The theme touched upon in this interesting presentation can be the subject of multiple TED talks! Good health, mental fulfilment, emotional well-being, spiritual harmony - are these a recipe toward leading a 'happy' life? Congratulations to the speaker for highlighting a very relevant issue - "keeping up with the Jones'es". And advising that wealth be pursued only to the extent that it provides comfort and security."Man does not live on bread alone".

The problem is that true, sustainable change takes both time (a lot of it), and the willingness of people who have lots of $$$$ to participate. Sadly, many who grew up with plenty of money don't want the status quo to change. They DON'T SEE. How could they? They will never see, unless they go out among the poor to understand how they live, and the challenges they face everyday just to survive. When was the last time you saw a multimillionaire hanging out with working class families?
Society teaches children that without money and status, they are not worthy, that they are nothing. Both rich and poor alike absorb this - and they believe it! It's become ingrained into so many cultures.
We were 8children and parents in 1bhk house and we were so happy now we have big villa and money but living alone lost happyness in life we need people to be happy and not too much money
Being poor or Middle class won't guarantee you love either. At least you aren't in the poor house on your own as that would really sick. You don't t have worst case scenario.

You notice that it’s only people that have money that study if money can buy happiness…. “Basic needs” is a very broad definition
Thank you
money buys more options and the ability to know what the actual opportunity to discuss your needs to be able to get the best way for them to be in touch with the new ones
Money can provide comfort and security, but true happiness comes from within. It comes from experiences, relationships, and personal fulfillment. It's about finding joy in the little things and making meaningful connections with others. Money can't buy love, friendship, or inner peace. It can't buy memories or laughter. So while money can make life easier in some ways, it can't buy true happiness. Happiness is a state of mind and heart, not a material possession. It's about living authentically and finding contentment in the present moment. So while money may provide temporary pleasure, it can't buy lasting happiness.
But with money you can find your happiness
Money can buy comfort.
When your needs are NOT being met, it feels like rejection, feeling, excluded and loneliness.
Money or No money $$
I think the key is in about 13min when he said - in service of. The question is what would serve "one's own fulfilment". Money is meant to give us first security. So yes a villa n yacht would be nice - if our need is family n one gets sea sick - then does that make sense. After all a villa isolates. And if youre sea sick should one chase after a yacht because someone else has? The key i see it is to work for contentment which aligns to our needs n our unique life purpose. There is no end to shiny objects. Live for your purpose. Not be a kitten chasing shiny objects
Money gives you opportunities to not need to work 9-5 thus giving you freedom to do things that you love, while giving you a sense of financial security. So money can be used as a tool to help you reach happiness faster.
Well... A difficult topic, if you have money you can buy a house, food, car, have more opportunities to go to private schools, get better education, quality health services, travel around the world, so you don't have to worry about money, and what are you gonna eat tomorrow, or next week, how are you gonna make it 'till the end of the month, so I guess that money can give you like a kind of happiness, freedom, tranquility, so this topic can be a little tricky, I mean depends on who do you ask, a poor man or a welthy man, by poor man or poor people I don't necessarily mean homeless, but people that wake up every single day and go to work, and make their best to get enough to meet their basic needs, and that's all they get just enough, not more than that. I'm not saying that money can buy or give you happiness, but... it's kind of tricky. That's my pov.

Nice statement 😂
The truth is this. Very few people in the world are happy. But happy or unhappy money makes like way better.
Here’s the flaw in what he’s saying. The more money you have, the more you have to invest, the people with lots of money are the ones shaping the world, whilst selling us the illusion of choice and democracy. If the right people had most of the money, then people wouldn’t mind entrusting them in the future, but that’s not the case, most are greedy, selfish, lack compassion, lack empathy, have oversized egos, thinks they’re above another human, has dire materialistic obsessions, lives above the law, invests in things that do more harm than good….list goes on. Money buys happiness, when the decent people in this world have control of it!
90% or maybe even more of all the things in this world can be bought with money. You can do almost everything with a huge amount of money, and to be fair, being able to buy absolutely everything I want and not having to work one more day in my life doesn't sound so bad.
Except typically, people earning a high income are also working long hours. I'm a business owner and have a high paying career. I also work 7 days a week almost every week. Less free time is not freedom, it's the opposite.

We all need a certain amount of money to be happy, but I believe that having good mental and physical health and a good support system are far more important to insuring lasting happiness than having huge amounts of money. When I think of billionaires and millionaires using private jets to travel all over the world I feel sick to my stomach. These private jets do a lot of damage to the atmosphere, but these super rich people don't seem to care.
extraordinary
the money give us the freedom, and the freedom give us the comfort that make us live life style very beautiful and full of happiness
Money is way to survive in better way not to give happiness rather pleasure.
speak for yourself. I'd be incredibly happy because money buys freedom and for me freedom is happiness. The ability to persue anything you want while being immune to society and even distance yourself from it is something that only money can buy.
If you have felt the need to justify yourself to strangers on the web, it is because it has hit the mark
To quote someone I once read, "Money may not directly buy happiness, but money solves a lot of the problems that cause misery."
To get that money, you usually need to work long hours. Which is not freedom. I make good money, I'm a business owner. I also work 7 days a week most weeks. I've also struggled with chronic depression for over 10 years. The depression has not magically gone away because of my successful career.

Peoples responses have mainly been one of how could you be happy with that role, it is a two steps down, and part-time. Few see it as a good thing, as they go on about their stress levels, which is a killer.
Would I work full time again.. probably not.
Would I like to have my old pay check.. yes.. but not at the expense of what I have gained.
I now have the equivalent of 32 weeks hoilday a year, how fantastic is that.
Sadly, few people are willing to make a change that will seen as a demotion, with less pay... while dreaming of the very things that I now have..
Humans.. contradictions in themselves
Haha, I want to go from a Honda Civic to a Honda HRj-V because I live in Vermont and want all-wheel-drive.
Money Does buy me Happinesss....it really does....but u need to use it welll....
I mean yeah, hasn't everyone who's had enough money for unnecessary things noticed this pattern in their life? x) But he's right.
Money can ofc buy things that make you happy, but those are usually things that enable experiences, like a gaming console, a bike or a trip to some nice place as a getaway, and not just objects or decorations that just sit there.
More 'complex' example: New good-looking car. Yeah that can take you places but if you already had a car before that did the same thing, it won't make you happier. The "hey friends look at my new fancy car" thing will fade quickly and the car driving slightly "smoother" than your old car won't do much either.
You can also notice this in video games. Once you have everything you want, all of the equipment, furniture, hair style for your character, all the sidequests finished.. once there's no challenge anymore, it gets boring. Yeah, that's why people make up challenges and mods, but still. Cheat mods specifically make it boring 10 times faster.
Wow those homeless people In the streets in the cold rain and the heat sure look happy
That ginormous house with boat house is what they need!
I need money to avoid sadness
He's only right IF you keep chasing more more more, better better better. Where money buys happiness is having enough to pay for anything you desire, not having to put up with all the stress that comes from working. Having lots of free time to do whats most important to you.Being able to do for those you love. You can take much better care of your health when money is not an issue.I could go on and on. I love window shopping, wheather it's million dollar homes, boats,Rolls Royce or whatever because it feels good just knowing i can pay cash for whatever i see. Money DOES buy happiness, it's just not the "only" way to happiness. My little 30 mill.has brought me a lot of joy. It also depends on why your unhappy too. If you are unhappy because of financial reasons but everything else is fine, guess what your going to feel if you come into lots of money?
Nice
People who say this have never been poor or disabled. Having money keeps you out of a certain level of misary which is good enough for a lot of people. If you have sercurity and everything you need and dont have to rely on anyone else then you have more ability for self actualization. The rich will have to keep working so probably wont ever reach this point either.
At End of the life.... the left over money in a person's account is time away from his loved ones, mental health /peace , things which he or she was passionate about and couldn't do etc etc
I genuinely have no desire to be rich or wealthy. I grew up in a very affluent area and I found out first hand that the more money you have the more problems that come with it. The answer is to make around $100K and to live somewhere you want to be doing what you want to do. Yes, $100K isn’t exactly a small amount of money but it’s definitely doable in many careers.
Long ago I came up with a theory that status or living situation doesn't make someone happy or unhappy but _change of status_ causes these emotions. Imagine people before bow and arrow was invented. They hunted deers for hours. Humans are slow but our evolutionary advantage is sweating and persevearance. Humans would chase the deer until it collapses. Then someone invented bow and arrow. Now they could kill it from a distance without hours of running. Imagine what a massive game changer this was back then. People back then sure loved the bow and arrow and where satisfied with how easy hunting was. But the children who grew up with bow and arrow probably still considered it tiring. I mean nowadays I'm annoyed when I have to go to supermarket for my meat because I'm lazy. Our life is much better than those of the richest people on earth 300 years ago. And do you think the richest people 300 years ago where dissatisfied? No, because they didn't know what they miss. They obviously didn't compare to us but to the poorer people 300 years ago and therefore realized how good their life was.
Its always the comparison that matters, which is why social media is proven to have negative impacts on mental health. People only post the best moments on social media and when one scrolls through it, they automatically compare themselves to all the people with perfect situations in holidays, while oneself is sitting at home on the couch having to work next day...
Then, if your own living situation changes, for example after a lottery win, its the strongest comparison because you compare to your previous life. Many things go easier now then before and everytime you subconsciously remember the struggle you had before and enjoy how easy it is now. Until you get used to it. Like you are used to get to the fridge instead of hunting for food. The luxury becomes standard and is not special or enjoyable anymore.
Yeah money can buy happiness till it is satisfying your basic needs like food , home , education , medical bill etc imagine homeless person getting shelter and food it will exponentially increase his happiness and yes you should definitely earn that much which satisfy your needs ,
But problem arise when people become mad in chasing money, more money and break the laws , ethics , loosing their mental peace .remember human needs has limits but desires are limitless
Their is a concept called hedonist adaption, it states that no matter how great achievement ( like becoming president of usa ) or reward, you will notice sudden spike in happiness but after some time it will return to baseline and you desire to want more , like billionaires
In my opinion ,True happiness only comes from contribution to society, solving problems, inventing something new these all are higher pleasure stated by is j.s Stuart mill
Encourage everyone to follow philosophy of Stoicism
Ogden Nash -
"Certainly there are things in life that money can't buy, but it's very funny -
"Did you ever try buying them without money."
