    I had to replace the front assembly and didn't find any videos/tutorials online so I thought why not make my own.
    I hope it helps you out. You dont have to disassemble the lens to replace the front assembly. You could actually go from the front, I didn't know that.

    These are the kind of obscure videos that we need more of. Everyone racing to review the latest iPhone etc, meanwhile I’m trying to find some sort of preview as what it take to swap my front element out on my $2500 lens that I know Sony will try to rake me over the coals for. Thank you for making this. And also, where did you buy your front element from? I can’t find anything

    • @FriedrichWeidig

      I bought it from a vendor that I found on AliExpress, who was also selling on ebay (I chose ebay for buyers protection). The element is an original Sony one and was brand new when I got it. I just paid ~300 €
      It's still available ( google for New Front 1st Optical lens block glass group Repair parts For Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM SEL2470GM lens ) on AliExpress.
      Thanks for your comment and I hope you can repair your lens aswell.

    Do you have any shims (or place for them) under the lens mount? I wish to try to fix a slight tilt by doing some adjustment on the lens bayonet, just need to raise one side very slightly. I cannot disassemle but maybe only remove the mount and shim if possible. (my lens is 12-24 GM but I assume the designs are very similar in assembly)

    Thanks for this video! Was very insightful. However, I dropped my 24-70 GM lens a while back and bent in the filter threads. Everything else is okay, thank goodness. I have found a replacement filter thread barrel, but I’m not sure how to install it. Do I need to strip the entire lens down to replace it? Or is there a more simple, safer way for someone who doesn’t have experience working on lenses?

    • @FriedrichWeidig
      @FriedrichWeidig  2 роки тому +4

      theoretically you can just unscrew the ornamental ring infront of the glass and then remove the screws that hold the front tube in place (the one with the filter threads), I don't know if it was because mine was bent as well but there was no way for me to unscrew the ornamental ring withouth destroying the remaining glass and using pliers (as seen in the video).
      I didn't see any adhesives under the ornamental ring but I'm not 100% sure about this. So maybe you'd have to take a heat pistol or something like that and warm it up before trying to remove it. There are NO hooks in the ornamental ring (like there are in other lenses to remove the ring). So all you can work with is friction. Im yet to find out how to properly remove it... Once you managed that, the rest is a piece of cake and you dont have to bother with disassembling the whole lens.
      Sorry that I can't be of help with this, please let me (and others) know when you have found a solution to that problem.
      edit: since the glass elements are glued together I retract my statement to use a heat pistol. You probably end up with a disfunctional lens assembly
      "The retainer rings of lens may have a clear thread locker applied at the factory and will not budge until the thread locker is dissolved. Use a cotton swab saturated in Acetone/nail polish remover and wet the threaded area thoroughly then allow the lens to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before trying to remove the retainer. A second application may be necessary."i found this in a forum thread about the removal of the ornamental ring for an older lens... maybe that still applied and helps.

      @@FriedrichWeidig Thank you! I apologize for my late response. I just rewatched your video and I understand exactly what needs to be done. I’ll first try to remove the ornamental ring by hand before applying the nail polish to release the thread-locker. I’ll let you know how it goes!

    • @FriedrichWeidig
      @FriedrichWeidig  2 роки тому +2

      @@damianpeyrot better not use nail polish :p , use nail polish remover and you have to use it before unscrewing the ornamental ring, otherwise you won't get it off... But this is still just an assumption

      I haven't experienced any issues ever since.
      Autofocus is as quick and reliable as it used to be.
      I haven't actually checked colors, but it looks "normal" no color fringing or washed out colors of any kind. I compared the sharpness with images from prior to the accident and couldn't see any difference. So I'm more than happy with the repair and the lens still works fine. you have to unscrew the ornamental ring in front. For that you need a special tool and maybe some solvent. I have no idea if it is glued in place. The tool required is circular with a rubbersurface to create friction to unscrew the ring. under the ornamental ring youll find screws.

      Unfortunately I can't tell you how to properly unscrew it, it's tight af. I saw other lenses that had hooks in that front ornament to unscrew it , this one doesn't have the hooks though. So all you can do is go with friction. Like a 3d printed tube with the right diameter and some rubber under it to increase the friction and then unscrew it would by my best bet

    been tring to get that front ornamental ring off, cant get it off with rubbers or wrench, its even scratched now , but im ok with a scratched ring. could it be glued on for sealing ? , ps ive been trying to get at fungus in the front element

    • @FriedrichWeidig
      @FriedrichWeidig  3 роки тому +1

      I didnt see any glue, it's just tight as it comes. the actual sealing is on the front assembly itself (see the blue rubber ring at 3:25 ). so the ornamental ring just has a cosmetic purpose (hiding the screws). I didnt remove any glue at least... at 2:51 you can see me demonstrating how I took it off with pliers, took a lot of force all the way through. When my lens hit the floor the front barrel bent a bit... so I assume it is easier to screw off with a non-bent barrel. Unfortunately thats all I can tell you... a lot of friction is needed!
      But since you just need to remove fungus it probably is easier to just go from the back, dismantle it and pull it back together, no need to remove the front assembly at all.
      It is easier than it looks ;)

      @@realslavmedia5792 @ 2:57 you can see that there is no tape whatsoever under the ornamental ring. But it is screwed in tight. I saw a 3D printed "tube" with a rubber ring at the bottom to screw it off in some other video (not the same lens though). There are no hooks to sink in as you may know... so you probably have to work with friction. And I think thats the only way to get to the screws of the front assembly... you have to take the ornamental ring off. But since yours is broken too? you could also just destroy the glass like I did.
